    I bought a featherweight cashmere scarf from Peili after seeing it recommended in a travel blog. It was a bit expensive ($89) but it's well worth the price! I always take it on the plane with me, as it's very warm and can double as a blanket. You can use it as a wrap or to cover your head in a mosque or temple, or even as a swimsuit cover-up. It's huge (90.5" x 39.4") but folds down to almost nothing. It can be draped around your neck, tied around your waist or tied to the handle of your bag. It comes in over 30 colors. I bought it in the dark teal color and it goes with just about everything.

    Love the video. I usually get a 5 night trip into my carry-on (could be 7 if it is a summer/beach trip). I once did a comparison with my mom to see how much clothes into a carry-on. I am plus-size and my mom is petite we always used to “argue” about overpacking and I told her it wasn’t overpacking, it’s just that my clothes took up more room. So we did the experiment. We actually have a lot of the same basic items, just in different colors and sizes (she likes color, bright color and floral while I stick to navy, black and browns and stripes). So we each decided to pick 3 pants, 3 tops, 2 shirts, 2 light weight sweaters and 2 jackets plus 2 pairs of shoes and obviously undergarments for each day and 1 set pijamas. We choose items to mix and match and things that could be dressed up if needed. No accessories as we both hate belts or scarves. We selected the same items to take out and wear on our travel day. Again, everything we choose were from the same brand and style, just different sizes and colors. We even did our best to fold exactly the same way (although I am a bit more OCD about the way I perfectly fold my socks and underwear and mom just folds them kind of sloppy…well, my mom fit everything into the carry-on roller bag and i did not. My mom is 5ft 1in and I am 5ft 6in, she is a size 6 shoe and I am a 10.5 or 11 shoe, she is a size 4-6 pants and small shirt. I won’t say my size but let’s just say I am significantly bigger. I had to leave out my back-up jacket and pijamas and really struggled with the shoes.

      That's a perfect example of when a checked bag makes sense! But still keeping to the rule of only two pieces and being able to manage it on your own is important if you're traveling overseas for sure! Great comment!

    • @erinlikesacornishpasty4703
      @erinlikesacornishpasty4703 Před rokem +4

      For a three week trip, you don't need more than two pair of pants, or two bottoms of any kind, whatever you prefer. It's useful to have a variety of tops you can layer, for slightly different weather, but no more than a total of 5 tops. I wash my socks and underwear in the sink and schedule laundry if necessary though. I can pack way less clothes that way. I only wear one pair of shoes, hiking boots, and sometimes bring shower shoes if that's necessary, so I really never pack shoes. Only wear one jacket, choose a winter one or a rain jacket, don't choose anything "cute" like a denim jacket. Lots of people want to fit it and wear fashionable clothes, but I have to say, practical matters more. Like, she recommends having a trench coat or a denim jacket, which is great if you're touring cities, but I rarely do, so my rain jacket I can get muddy works so much better. I never carry a purse when I travel, only a day pack 🤷‍♀️. She makes a good point when she suggests lighter weight clothes, like merino wool, silk, and linen, because it packs smaller and weighs so much less. She always has SO many clothes in her suitcase 🤣.
      *oh and SOMETIMES I bring a swimsuit, if I KNOW I'm going swimming. Mostly I don't plan vacations that involve swimming, but I've certainly bought a swim suit overseas because I realized I needed one 🤷‍♀️.

    Have you heard of Wool&? I've done both their 100 day and 30 day dress challenges and love them. Wool is a great travel piece. I've got a great nautical-ish feel wool dress for our Disney cruise coming up. While I'm excited to dress up and disney bound for dinner every night, I think my daytime clothes will be quite minimal thanks to that dress!

      I took a boat neck long sleeve Wool& dress on a Viking cruise last December. It looks nice for a little dressy and casual with pants or tights. Change the look with a scarf or necklace. The first time I used merino wool. Loved it. I’m going to look into your t-shirts for my trip to Ireland next spring.

    LOL you brought more jackets than you brought shirts! I definitely need to bring more clothes with me. I don't like looking back at the photos afterwards and seeing myself in the same clothes the entire trip. I feel that same way about wearing the same clothes over and over on cruises or to WDW. I need different outfits so I can remember later it was a different trip!

    I LOVE the Longchamp bag. Thank you for the recommendation. This was more $ than I have ever spent on a bag but the pleasure I receive from it makes it an investment piece. Plus if I use it daily since it is flexible, the cost per use reduces. Thank you!

      LOVE TO HEAR THIS! And YES that's the key to the larger dollar purchases for me - the VALUE has to be there. That cost per wear is a great way to view it!

    I’ve been searching for natural fabrics for my trip to Japan because we are going in July and it will be so so hot. I need to start thinking about a capsule wardrobe and I’m choosing mostly light colours because of the intense heat.

    I have a pair of Keen hiking shoes that are waterproof. They would replace the rain shoes and the tennis shoes. They come in multiple colors. I chose the dark tan ones. They go with everything and don't show dirt. I also have a pair black flats for dressier occasions that are made of an open weave fabric and double as sandals in warm weather. Both accept the custom orthotics I have to wear to walk comfortably. I would go with a lined trenchcoat instead of taking 2 larger coats. It would cover rain and 3 season wear. I got mine at land's end.

    • @lskazalski
      @lskazalski Před rokem

      My trenchcoat has a zip-out lining so it can go anywhere and goes with anything. I try to pack mostly neutrals with one 'pop' color. I'm a plus size woman and can easily pack for 2 weeks in a carry-on wheeled backpack and a messenger bag the slides over the handle. My small phone wallet bag goes inside the messenger bag but comes out during day trips along with a lightweight packable backpack.

Also, seeing all the pieces laid out on a bed (not piled) would have been helpful for those of us who need the visual reinforcement. Thank you for doing this video. It was very informative.

    Loved this! I’m still struggling to wrap my brain around the merino wool and shirt rewearing. What I usually do is pack really thin base layers from Uniqlo so those stink and I can rewear my top layer. I’ve gotten much better at minimal packing for international trips but really struggle for Disney trips, particularly cruises. We’re doing the 7 night norwegian cruise on dcl next august and planing on doing Disneyland Paris. My girls will be 11 and 9 (almost 10) on that trip and I vacillate between carry on for everyone or 2 carry ons a checked bag. I am unsure the girls will be able to handle their own carry on.

    Great ideas in your video. I do wonder about all the other things like underwear, pjs, bras, etc. I also take a few items for hygiene (wipes etc). Did you pack all of these types of items in with your carryon? or did you have a personal item, like your backpack with the items listed? My trip to Japan coming up I am packing a medium check in, carryon and personal bag. I am plus size and definitely can't get it all in the carry on, but I will still use your suggestions to slimming down what I pack and try capsule clothing. Love your videos!

    I’m not opposed to the you can buy it there for a lot of things but disclaimer for anyone who isn’t thin-for international travel especially clothes can be the hardest thing to replace or buy in a country like Italy or Japan where sizing skews much smaller (especially if you’re not shopping at a brand available in the US) so always have back ups in a carry on that you keep with you if your checked bag is lost.
