This video is terribly unrepresentative of the Petersburg VA I have lived in for 5 years and truly enjoy. Yes, we do have some neighborhoods with high crime and lots of abandoned properties. And yes, this is huge problem. I am a single woman who lives in Olde Town and I have always felt safe. Happily, we are seeing an influx of New Yorkers and Richmonders and others who are moving to town to restore these affordable properties. We do have a highly rated healthy food restaurant, Local Vibe Cafe, and healthy grocery store, Agoria Market, and a weekly year round farmers market, River City Farmer's Market. Only driving down 3 streets you missed so many things that were no more than 2 blocks away. You missed High Street and Grove Avenue where large mansions dating back from the early 1700s are restored and cared for beautifully some with world class gardens. If you have traveled a few more blocks down Sycamore Street you would have seen many historic churches and more well kept mansions leading the the Walnut HIll Historic District. And, by the way, Petersburg has the largest collection of Tiffany glass in the world. It is also the home of the very first Memorial Day and Petersburg was the first place to celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday. You drove right by a Courthouse built in 1838 and still used today. You were also just 1 block from a Church founded in 1643 when only 25,000 colonials were in America. You were also just blocks away from Petersburg Battle Field were 30,000 plus soldiers died during a siege that last 9 months at the end of the Civil War. I could go on and on. So come on back, take a better look around, have a healthy meal, meet some truly amazing locals who are cut of the tough fabric it takes to restore these homes and live in a community with real needs, social and economic live beside these historic places.

Well said, thank you. If you notice a lot of people who make "so-called" travel videos explore only the areas they feel comfortable in. Others are exploitative of crime ridden neighborhoods populated by those who are on the downside of advantage. I've been in the area too and this video glossed over way too much.

It’s really sad bc Petersburg actually used to be really nice. My grandma who would be about 110 if she were still alive used to put on her finest clothes and her silk gloves to go there when she was young. It always made her sad to see how it had changed.
Also, Virginia is technically the south, but I’m from right outside of DC and I always just say I’m from Northern VA and people know what that means. I really don’t feel like I’m from the south. I think most people above Fredericksburg-ish forget that they are until someone reminds them.

Virginia's D.C. suburbs, while historically quite southern, are now more like Southern but also Mid Atlantic influenced extensions of DC, being very cosmopolitan. @@jjunior692 Petersburg actually is Tidewater in one sense, though not as part of the Tidewater metro region, as it is sometimes called. By Tidewater I don't mean the commonly used Term for that area. I meant the Virginian or Chesapeake cultural (and historic colonial) region. Yes the term has been been used in this context, but mostly in a historical context so probably not the best choice of term on my part. I probably should have just used Chesapeake (centered in Virginia) region or more accurately the SOUTHERN Chesapeake CULTURAL region whose CULTURE extends south well into North Carolina and also north in to parts of (mainly southern and eastern shore) Maryland and southern Delaware.

@@kingali-el4416 sorry but the Virginian, or Chesapeake, cultural region, in which Petersburg, VA. is located, is what has sometimes in fact been called Tidewater. No, you aren't in the Hampton Roads metro (also sometimes called Tidewater) nor in the actual Tidewater zone along the coast, but Tidewater is still one name (I agree not the best!) for the greater historical culture region of the upper lowland US South.
This region, better called the Virginian region (it is centered on and includes most of Virginia minus most of the DC suburbs and western Appalachian fringe) also extends deep into North Central and Northeastern North Carolina , Southeastern and eastern shore Maryland and even Southern Delaware) is both historically and at present culturally distinct and different from the Deep South, Greater Appalachia, and Mid Atlantic or East Midlands regions which border it, even while also having much in common with all the surounding regions. The northeast is more dangerous than the Deep South? Southerners and their propaganda is so funny. The narrator sounds like he’s either black and Hispanic, and imma tell you right now, the Deep South is not the place you want to be if you’re that.
As far as Petersburg, it’s the south, not remotely considered the north. A 2 hour drive especially up the Atlantic can change your environment drastically. Take Florida for example
2 hours away from south beach you may still be in Florida but the state looks vastly different when your inland vs on the coast.
Petersburg looks this way because it’s like West Virginia and a lot of other former spots that failed to adapt with modern times. They relied on coal mines and factory jobs that just don’t exist now thanks to technology. In fact most of Virginia is pretty rural except for the cities close to the border of DC.

Southern and eastern shore Maryland plus southern Delaware is part of the Virginian region of the South, which is of course fairly culturally transitional in character but still distinctly different from the rest of the Mid-Atlantic and has its own sort of Southern cuisine, for example. The Virginian region includes most of Virginia minus most of the DC suburbs and far west Appalachian region, plus a large portion of North Carolina including most of the northern part of the state, the research triangle and many smaller cities and rural counties, etc. etc. The rest of Maryland is not Southern but rather mid Atlantic, even historically, though with some Southern influence to be sure but more so from the North.
Most of Virginia is the south historically and remains more Southern then not but is substantially diluted by now with northeast culture. But Most of Virginia DC suburbs are Mid-Atlantic NOT southern anymore sinse at least the late 20'th century if not earlier, and were historically transitional rather then being fully southern in culture even though politically still being the South. Northeast Maryland DC suburbs are actually still significantly Southern, as is much of Ann Arundel county Maryland which is partly southeast Baltimore suburbs and exurbs, though the part of the county closer to Baltimore itself is basically Mid-Atlantic. It's mostly the southern part of the county and the areas closer to the Chesapeake shore that have a distinct Virginian Southern character.

@@KOJOKWAME7 if that's your definition, then sure it is. But the Mason-Dixon line isn't a currently relavent cultural boundary and never was much of a cultural marker in fact. It was really just a largely arbitrary survey line whose seeming importance eventually got blown way out of proportion.
New Jersey was actually a slave state btw untill the civil war (significant small town Black populations in Central and Southern New Jersey are remnants), but was hardly the south even then. Nor was most of Maryland, which was originally a British Catholic colony, but it was also contested and partly colonised by Virginians in addition to being a slave state and a border state. But the Virginians only became dominant in the south and the eastern shore (as they also did in southern Delaware). The rest of the state had a significant Southern influence (western Maryland is of course Appalachian) but it was still historically mostly typical of the mid Atlantic in it's settlement history and even in terms of most of it's politics.
