      It's funny how it's advertised on door dash but not in the restaurant. I ordered a meal with the charged lemonade and on the door dash app it said "this drink has as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee" but when I went into Panera to pick it up there was no advertisements saying the lemonade was that heavily caffeinated. In fact 2 had signs saying sugar free but not a single sign about it being about as caffeinated as a tall Red Bull. I could easily see how people with disabilities and heart conditions could end up drinking this by mistake. Panera definitely needs to lose the wrongful death lawsuits because those deaths were definitely their fault because of lack of advertising.

      @vianjelos Před 4 měsíci +22

      The sugar content alone is dangerous..parents really have no idea what they are feeding their kids which is a bigger issue in general. It should be common sense that caffeine isn't good for kids in any quantity and small children don't need any added sugar in their diet either honestly.

Earlier this school year, we went and I was quite thirsty. So, being a lemonade fan, I decided that the strawberry lemonade looked so good. So, I drank a cup. Then another. Then another. Then half of another. We went and did our debate and I was feeling on top of the world but almost panicky. On the bus ride back, I felt like I was dying. As a caffeine addict, I'd say one cup throughout the day would be ok for most others in the same situation. However, I would not suggest drinking almost 4.

    As an ex Panera employee- Ive always been a little bit skeptical about the charges lemonades. For some context: I quit my job as a cashier/barista/baker in March of this year because the work environment was just too nasty. I had been there for almost two years. I feel as if I have reason to give some dirt on this establishment. When they introduced the charged lemonades, at first I thought nothing of it and that it was just only slightly caffeinated. They literally put it right next to the sodas and the other bubbler drinks. Of course, knowing it was caffeinated I never recommended that kids try it. They made these “lemonades” look just like the other teas and other bubbler drinks. And so that’s why I think I would still see children as young as like- 6 sitting down with their families and drinking these. They make the colors look all fun and bright and pretty too which doesn’t help when kids are easily attracted to bright colors. They probably just think it’s juice and nothing more of it. While it is important that parents look at the labels they make it almost impossible to see the caffeine amount and really only show the calorie count. At the Panera I worked at, they eventually moved the 3 bubblers with these lemonades to the barista counter and we’d actually have to get these for guests ourselves. Maybe this was to make it known that these are caffeinated drinks but GOOD GOD the amount of caffeine in these is higher than ANYTHING we’d be making behind that counter. I would also like to add that out of my time working there, and when the charged lemonades were available- not ONCE did I ever actually witness them making these drinks. They would always just be filled up and never run out. It was bizarre.

    The fact that both MatPat & Panera mention Dark Roast coffee multiple times when it's the roast with the LEAST caffeine really says it all on how little caffeine in understood in the collective conscience.
    Also, Panera allows sells that lemonade to-go in half gallon bottles. I almost bought one this week, but passed since it was ~$11.
    Update: Since this comment is gaining a lot a traction I think it's worth highlighting Kyle_P's comment on how this is actually a double misconception. The TL;DR is coffee beans puff up and become quite airy the more they're roasted. An easier visual might be popcorn, but since there's no shell it's gradual. A scoop of dark roast is considerably less dense than a lighter one and in turn less bean material overall, thus the coffee content as a whole, not just the caffeine, is less.

      I know that some lemonade brands are thinking about bringing UK caffeinated versions.
      Why do sugary and fruits beverages need caffeine anyway. Why do you need to change your heart and brain activity with a drug every time you have a nice beverage.
      I understand that you get generations are moving away from alcohol but that doesn't mean we have to swap a neuro depressant for a neurostimulant and act like that's totally reasonable.
      I think we need to have more things like regular lemonade and orangeade and decaf soft drinks. If I want caffeine I'll go have some tea.
      Many people don't think water, if they're having caffeinated soft drinks most if the day. Maybe a caffeinated pre work out before gym. That will all add up.
      Caffeine also has a relatively long half life so it stays in your system for a long time.
      And then imagine in a weekend and you go out and have alcoholic beverages - then you just end up with high levels of a neurostimulant and a neurodeoresswnt competing. This will wreak havoc on cardiac health.

    I have a heart condition that's severe enough to result in me avoiding caffeine as much as humanly possible, as it can make me /extremely/ ill. Rest in peace my former coffee addict. This sort of thing is horrifying because as someone who can't even have a cup of coffee without feeling the bad effects, I can completely see myself obliviously drinking one of these lemonades without realizing just how much of a grave I'm digging for myself. That tiny sign there isn't enough to tell people like me “hey, you need to avoid this” because it's obscured by the sheer amount of environmental context going “hey, this is okay! :D”. You breezed over this really quickly, but I think it’s good to keep in mind that these lemonades also come included with the unlimited sips pass, something I nearly bought a while back planning to spend the day at Panera drinking the new lemonades they were advertising.
    I work at a soda shop and drink at least 44oz of soda a day (most of which has caffeine) but I draw the line at a monster. That’s too much for me. I hurts to drink one so I don’t
    I have no clue what would have happened if I had actually spent a day at Panera drinking these. This isn’t right, and quite frankly, Panera won’t see me in their stores for a while after this.

      Yup, my mom and I tried the unlimited pass when it was heavily discounted and we always got the lemonades. I genuinely did not realize what "charged" really meant when I was drinking them. Or at least I assumed it was a pretty small amount of caffeine. We did eventually realize that it had a stupid amount of caffeine, so now we only use a little bit of the lemonade for flavor and fill the rest with regular lemonade and the green tea.
