  • Holiday Farm Fire is a huge wildfire on the McKenzie River in Oregon. I wanted to show a bit of the damage without getting in the way of recovery. This has been a very sad wildfire season for our forests and many homes.

    Nice work covering this tastefully without sensationalism. Having recently passed through the area, I think I was most astonished by how it just went on and on and on for so many miles, and it was surreal seeing the occasional house standing as if nothing had happened, while all their neighbors were simply erased.

      Thanks man. I thought the chimneys left over at every lot was pretty sad to see. Makes me want to make a house out of brick.

      It was a big deal. Then the same thing happened the next year elsewhere. Wow. We need some forest management for sure.

    Hard to stomach, but thanks for showing the truth. This gets my emotions flowing again. Oregon forests will be fine and they will recover fully, we just won't see it in our lifetimes like it was before. That's small consolation for those that lost everything, but good to keep in our hearts as we begin to heal. A human life is a blink of an eye to the mountains and forests. Thanks, brother.

      Thank you. Life will move on but have to feel for those that lost their homes. Fire is a healthy and natural thing. I don't think these fires were completely natural. Things like global warming, power lines, lack of natural fire.

    My husband and I drove through there this afternoon,it was sad to see Blue River so decimated:Finn Rock Store was gone:the burn went on for miles ,skipping around different sites,burning this area but not another. The river was beautiful in the sunlight despite the charred areas all around it but strange to be able to see so much of it. Thank You,enjoyed the video♥️

      Pretty sad. Same story for much of Oregon last year and probably this year too. With so many issues, hoops and loops recovery is taking awhile.

      Thank you, what a tragedy. I had planned to film a lot more, but when I got there the mood changed. Less footage and a quick edit is refreshing to me as sometimes I spend way too much time editing!

    I live very close to the site of the initial fires, and I really think I have a mild case of PTSD because your images have left me a trembling wreck. The night of September 7th is seared into my memory, without a doubt one the worst nights of my life. Watching your video has brought the memories to the forefront of my mind, and as odd as it sounds to hear, thank you for leaving this up. Some of the lessons we as a community learned should remain fresh in our collective minds, we paid a very high price in the learning.
    While some re-building has happened, according to the local paper roughly 85% of residents have yet to make significant steps to rebuilding! It's going to take decades to rebuild, and for some it will not happen all.nrr

    • @MattCookOregon
      @MattCookOregon  Před rokem +1

      Sorry to hear that. The start of the fire was actually my wedding site! Somehow most of that wedding area didn't burn all that much. Maybe since it moved west quickly. I am not sure how much the government has adjusted. I haven't heard of any big preventative policy change. Hopefully they do something.

    • @Stephanie-we5ep
      @Stephanie-we5ep Před rokem

      @Matt.Cook.Oregon The Government doesn't seem to be especially helpful I agree. Likewise, the policies to prevent another disaster don't seem to be under discussion, let alone examined.

    Hey Matt,
    I really appreciate your sensitivity of how you didn't film people who were recovering what was left. My family lost two homes and a business in Blue River. At one point my Sister and I were going through the rubble of her home and someone had the audacity to snap a picture of us. Your footage was informative and helpful and I didn't find it invasive.
    Im a filmmaker myself and am currently working on a doc. about fire victims emotional healing from all over the west coast.
    Please let me know if I can use any footage from this video (you caught images of my families property), to be spliced into the doc, as I was too emotional to film the fire damage (even though I had just been gifted a camera). Of course you would be given credit if it made it into the final film.
    Nice work.

      @MattCookOregon  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you. I didn't know what I was getting to on this. I thought it was so sad and interesting that the place I drive through every week was so different. Once I got there I realized I probably shouldn't be recording too much. I think it should be fine if you use some imagery with credit. Let me know where I can see the documentary when it completes. I also do commercial drone/camera work if anything specific is needed. oregonsbigfoot@gmail.com
