    The name SolarCity gave me flashbacks. During my childhood my mom signed a contract with SolarCity that was pitched as something which would help our community - a growing Texas city experiencing rolling blackouts as a result of an increasing population. My mom, self-admittingly not knowledgeable about contracts, entered into a 5 year agreement to install solar panels on our house. My mom believed the contract was under the city, as that's what the salesperson implied. The idea was that we would generate electricity for our own house as well as for a grid which would go back to households or businesses in the city. If my mom violated the contract she would be legally obligated to purchase the solar panels for tens of thousands of dollars (This she did not find out until getting into contact with a lawyer who reviewed the contract after it was signed). A "city" program, SolarCity was supposed to help lower our electric bill, as we were generating our own electricity. In reality we essentially had to purchase back our electricity, as well as rent the solar panels. Our electric bills were $500+ and I remember my mom crying during summers because of the cost. With a single mother as the head of our household that could have easily sunk our family and we did almost lose our house. It was also much more difficult to sell our house when the time came, as a buyer would be required either to enter the same contract, or purchase the solar panels. I mention this story here because no news centers at the time would publish my mom's story. We also found out the company was under investigation by the Better Business Bureau, though I have a hard time finding those details today in a Google search. I don't remember a lot of details, but I do vividly remember the day the salesperson pitched the program, promising a lowered electric bill through a city program which could help our community and ourselves. And the tears, instability, and cursing of Elon Musk which came afterwards.
    For those interested my mom had to pay off the contract for over $20,000. The $20,000 was paid from the profit my mom earned in selling the house. No one would purchase the house with the contract and it was very difficult to sell even with just the panels. Part of the reason my mom sold my childhood home was to exit the contract.

      That’s what your mum gets for making decisions based on “saving the environment” rather than providing for the family🤷🏻‍♂️
      Several of my neighbors bought & financed a solar system that has payments right around the amount of $ their power bill was b/c they were “saving the environment” and the savings from the power bill would pay the payments,
      It’s turned out that the solar system is completely useless and they’re struggling to make the payments on what is effective a pile of scrap…
      I just find it difficult to feel sorry for people who try to save the environment when they’re not even able to properly care for their children lol

    • @nataliezuniga943
      @nataliezuniga943 Před rokem +73

      @@205ken4 Assuming you're here for conversation rather than self indulgent prodding, my mom is sometimes naively focused on environmental actions that have been arguably not beneficial. Who's to say that doesn't represent a good majority of the developed world that's consumed propaganda about what's "good for the planet" manufactured by the same companies destroying it. You shouldn't always believe everything you're told. That being said, my mom thought she would be helping our community (rolling blackouts during record high temperatures in Texas are not fun) and lowering our electric bill, rather than more than doubling it. Two things I'd view as more than sufficient in attempting to "properly care for" her children. The company did throw out estimates for what the electric bill would look like after installation of our solar panels and as an underdeveloped eye witness I do remember that bit. But I guess you don't have to always be true to your word when you're a company unconcerned with the ethics of lying. Before you say it, yes, I'm a person with nothing better to do than share a story.

      Well, a diagnosis of "narcissism" would require that Musk is impliedly projecting a False Self--i.e. a false image of himself as a highly-successful businessperson capable of accomplishing almost anything he sets his mind to in the business sphere, even if his methods are idiosyncratic, incomprehensible, and seem illogical and ad hoc to us mere mortals. But, that's not a false self in Musk's case. An incredibly successful businessperson with virtually unlimited potential business-wise is Musk's TRUE self. JFC he is literally the richest person in the world, barring possibly some oil sultans, and the vast majority of his wealth having been acquired from his entrepreneurial acumen in multiple fields over multiple decades. "Grandiosity," a key component of narcissism, requires a delusionally over-inflated and unearned self-regard. The world's richest person who has succeeded time and again in many high stakes business ventures, thinking he can somehow do it again in social media, may turn out to be wrong, as all high risk business ventures have a risk of failure. But does not imply a delusional level of grandiosity. (An analogy might be if 7-time Superbowl champ Tom Brady went to a new team that was in disarray and not very good, believing he could turn it into a Superbowl champion. That would not be evidence of delusional grandiosity. Because he has the actual ability to do it, although never any guarantees.) I think Dr. Grande is starting to play just a little too much to the progressive peanut gallery with some of these videos, perhaps reflecting the psychologist's own unconscious cognitive biases.

      At the end of the day, advertisers want to make money. Social media makes a lot of money, but requires some regulation to make the most amount if money. First of all, hate speech is a completely nebulous and subjective term that can mean different things to different people. Second of all, Elon prioritizes free speech, within the bounds of the law. Why has the culture shifted on this issue so far as to be authoritarian? Why is everyone so threatened by what people might have to say? Thirdly, Elon actually hasn't even changed the Twitter guidelines on speech.
      The problem at Twitter was that you had activists, colluding with and pressuring private companies, and even governments, to silence voices they are ideologically opposed to.
      It seems to me that Elon bought a failing company, that was full of bloat. With employees basically doing nothing, and bragging about it on social media. I think Elon is going to try and turn this company into one that can possibly make some money.
      And if "private companies" are so keen on dictating what people can say, I say it's high time for those companies to fuck off. I don't care if it's the government trying to silence people, or private companies, at the end of the day, it's a violation.

      'As of 2022, Twitter is not profitable. In fact, in 2021, on $5 billion in revenues, Twitter generated over $220 million in net losses. In Q2 2022, on $1.17 billion in revenues, Twitter posted a net loss of $270 million. However, in the first six months of 2022, on almost $2.4 billion in revenues, Twitter generated over $240 million in net income.'

I hope he proves all the naysayers wrong and is able to have great success with Twitter. Few things; You should have mentioned why he left South-Africa; He and Kimbal, his brother didn't want to support the apartheid government and go to the mandatory military service.
    The claim that Errol (his father) owned half of an emerald mine was made by him and no one has ever produced any proof of this. Nevertheless the fact that he left South-Africa with his brother without any financial help from his family and then got into student loan debt and then created Zip2 (you misnamed the company btw) and made their fortune is also something you should have mentioned. He is self-made and this is important because there are so many people who desperately want to claim otherwise, hence the emerald mine claim circulating in the internet.

    The concern with AI is that the algorithms that run them are opaque to the general public. A lot of effort goes into trying to remove bias from machine learning as it can appear unintentionally. I doubt Elan fears that robots will take over and instead fears that mundane people and their political handlers will point towards AI output as "fact" or the "best possible answer" when it isn't, or assuming that the algorithm is fair. Anyways, I know you were joking, just thought I'd clarify because it's going to be a hot issue in about 10-20 years. Love your vids!
