September 7th, 2002. Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion Roy Jones Jr took on the No. 1 ranked WBC contender Clinton Woods from Sheffield, United Kingdom with the following titles on the line:
i. IBA Light Heavyweight Title (2nd defense)
ii. IBO Light Heavyweight Title (4th defense)
iii. NBA Light Heavyweight Title (3rd defense)
iv. WBF Light Heavyweight Title (2nd defense)
v. IBF Light Heavyweight Title (7th defense)
vi. WBA Light Heavyweight Title (10th defense)
vii. WBC Light Heavyweight Title (11th defense)
viii. The Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Title (2nd defense)
Prefight records; Jones 46(37)-1, Woods 32(19)-1.
Jones entered the fight as World Champion in 3 weight classes; Middleweight, Super Middleweight & Light Heavyweight with notable wins over Glenn Wolfe, Thulani Malinga, Virgil Hill, Jorge Fernando Castro, Otis Grant, Reggie Johnson, Mike McCallum, Eric Harding, Lou Del Valle, Antoine Byrd, Merqui Sosa, Eric Lucas, Thomas Tate, Richard Hall, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Jorge Vaca, Montell Griffin, Tony Thornton, Vinny Pazienza, Bernard Hopkins & James Toney.
On the other hand, Woods had yet to defeat a top notch opposition at this point of his career.
Overall, the gutsy challenger had his moments as he applied constant pressure in attempts to crowd the champion but for the most part he was overwhelmed by the extraordinary reflexes of one of boxing’s most gifted athletes.
The end came at the midpoint of round 6 when Woods’ manager Dennis Hobson threw in the towel to save his fighter from unnecessary punishment.
This was The Sheffieldian’s only KO loss in his 48 fight career that spanned 15 years.
On March 4th 2005, Clinton Woods bagged the vacant IBF Light Heavyweight Title via TKO5 over Rico Hoye.
He made 4 successful defenses against Jason DeLisle, Glen Johnson & Julio Cesar Gonzalez (2x) before losing the title to “Magic Man” Antonio Tarver via UD12 on April 12th 2008.
After this win, Jones put on 18 pounds and move up to the Heavyweight division.
On March 1st 2003, he made history by winning the WBA Heavyweight Championship with a UD12 triumph over betting underdog John Ruiz who was the 1st ever Latino to win a world heavyweight title.
Back in March 2001, Ruiz upset 38 year old Evander Holyfield via UD12 to become the WBA Heavyweight Champion.
Roy Jones Jr’s emphatic triumph over The Quietman made him the 7th Quadruple World Champion and the 2nd former world middleweight titlist to hold a world heavyweight title.
Note: On March 19th 1897, Bob Fitzsimmons defeated Jim Corbett via KO14 to garner the World Heavyweight Title to become boxing’s 1st Triple Crown World Champion and the 1st former world middleweight titlist to win a world heavyweight title. “Ruby Bob” was World Champion at Middleweight, Light Heavyweight & Heavyweight.
However, Jones did not defend the title allegedly due to failed negotiations to secure fights with Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield & Mike Tyson thus he decided to shed the 18 pounds he put on and returned to Light Heavyweight while still holding the WBA Heavyweight Title.
On November 8th 2003, he won the vacant WBA Light Heavyweight Super Title & WBC Light Heavyweight Title via MD12 over Antonio Tarver.
His win over Tarver made him the 1st reigning world heavyweight title holder to move down from the Heavyweight division to win a world title at Light Heavyweight.
On February 20th 2004, Jones elected to vacate his WBA Heavyweight Championship.

This is the first fight that i noticed Roy was starting to slip. If you watched the actual fight Woods was landing some decent shots. I never saw Roy get hit so much by such an average guy. Obviously he stopped him in 6 but if you watch Roy’s career like I did, you saw subtle signs of him starting to slip. The next fight was against John Ruiz and the rest is history. Age, a bad weight cut, and physical skills eroded and he was never the same fighter.
