I have been shooting Canon since 1973 and I have a lot of lenses, only 2 RF. What do they say about the colour of grass? Most people couldn't tell the difference between a RAW and jpeg image, or a full frame and M43. My skills are now redundant, I could sense when a car was going airborne, and press the shutter to get the one frame I needed, now you have 120fps, precapture and 8K video, very little skill needed. I sometimes use a 5Dsr, only 50mp but huge files, 84mp would cause computer meltdown. Incidentally is that an R7 chip upscaled to full frame. I tried a Sony A7rv, I wasn't impressed. At work [mainly motorsport] I was using a 1D, 4mp, for twelve years before I went to the 5Diii. I didn't stay with the 1 series and my income crashed when people started flooding Facebook with free images. A camera is a tool, you don't need it to sing and dance.
Frames for a car airborne is now even achievable with mobile, however the extra 30fps ai tracking will get you that one shot, 2 inches before the car lands! The differentiater in the same pool of photographers

I think it’s similar to Intel vs. TSMC insofar as Canon is struggling to be both a producer of camera systems AND the sensor silicon that’s inside, while for Sony it’s just one piece of their larger imaging business. Conversely, Sony Imaging’s success isn’t just linked to Sony Camera, but rather the success of all their downstream clients buying sensors en masse (like Apple, Nikon, etc. as you mentioned). As such, Sony has a vested interest in developing market-leading technology to sell to as many companies as possible, not just to hoard it for their own camera bodies. Meanwhile, it’s currently in Canon’s best interests to keep the pace of innovation comparatively slow so they can trickle out updated bodies at regular intervals, even if they had something like a commercially viable global shutter ready (which I very much doubt). And then there’s Nikon, Fuji, etc. who can all design sensors using Sony’s latest manufacturing process and features for their own cameras, all with the benefit of not having the overhead of sensor production facilities on their own books (similar to how AMD is a “fabless” chip maker). It’s a tough position to be in for Canon for sure, and I don’t think trying to tighten the grip by doing things like banning third party lenses is the fix (quite the contrary).
Correct, but think about it this way. How long did it take for TSMC to catch Intel, and how long did it take Intel to catch up. Intel now has the power. They just don’t have the energy and heat dissipation.
@@TigerWould2TSMC was pretty close to Intel for a very very long time before they surpassed them during the 14nm fuckup. What you’re thinking of is how long for AMD (the first major CPU on TSMC) to catch up, which, after going fabless and moving to TSMC was literally 0 generations. Zen1/+ are GF (foundry spun out of AMD) 14/12nm, and Zen2 was TSMC N7; and Zen2 obliterated Intel in the server market, high end desktop too, Intel only slightly had an edge in gaming, but by Zen3 even that was gone. And Intel still hasn’t caught up. We won’t know until next year, but it’s honestly looking like they may not catch back up for another few generations. I don’t fully agree with the above analogy, but it’s petty close.
@@1armbikerthat’s my point. Is that Intel will catch up. They seem behind and they are in some aspects but it’s because they haven’t figured a few things out. In the case of Canon it’s the same thing. Their read out speed isn’t as high because they are using duel pixel tech something that all other brands got rid of a while ago. The canon flagship seems further behind but still suits those who it’s designed for no different than Intel. In the case of the chips for TSMC some of their chips have had issues as well. But they aren’t bogged down by stock holders like Intel was (just like Sony and Nikon aren’t bogged down with investors like Canon is!). It’s the correct analogy based on what’s happening with Intel and what’s happening with Canon.
@@JJARCHIEyeah Intel has drama due to the fact that they hold back and for years profit out drove innovation. Canon is having this same issue. Canon has had global shutter since 2010 (actually longer than that). Didn’t put in a camera until 2016 (the canon C700 global shutter edition) then scrapped that project and went have to their old ways. Canon could have pioneered this is so many ways and chose to just sit on this tech. Then Sony comes out with one and they are still like meh we don’t have to do anything.
As a Canon user for 30 years and an R5+R10 shooter, I agree, Canon is behind and I agree that it is probably by one generation. Nonetheless Canon has a few key advantages that the competition doesn't quite have: - incredible hardware reliability (Nikon probably the only ones that match them), - very strong camera bodies including the plastic ones, - good handling (I preferred my M50 feel in the hand to Sony's A7 which pressed at the wrong place) - generally incredibly stable firmware from launch (although that seems to be less and less true, the R5 got better with but was pretty good but my R10 doesn't always wake up from power saving mode!) - very good lenses with backward compatibility to the first generation of AF lenses (maybe because they were lucky to make the right choices from day 1). That being said, I don't think that Canon has innovated at the pace of the other brands since the 5DII which took every other manufacturer by surprise. The R5 was probably the closer they came to having another 5DII moment in my opinion. Being a late buyer of the R5 (a bit over a year) and having purchased it at close to half of launch price, I am delighted with my choice but, if the Z8 had come out (it was announced but not released) I might have jumped ship. I was also very close to jumping ship with the D850 but I could see mirrorless coming and thought I might jump ship then. The thing is that Canon isn't exciting anymore, it is very good and I know exactly what I am going to get it and how... and I have taken pictures that I have sold in galleries even recently with either my 5DII or my R5, but Canon doesn't get me excited... Nobody ever asks me how I took this picture, how much time did I spend retouching it on Photoshop or did I combine multiple shots like they did for my first handheld night shot in central London with my 5D that was taken RAW and on which I had barely spent 3 minutes on Lightroom to edit. Now I could take the same picture and get a much better result but nobody would think that there is wizardry involved, it could come out of any camera from Nikon, Fuji, Sony....
I MUST mention that I just went back to Canon due to the fact its "hotshoe" does not play well with Profoto transmitters. It breaks the pins! I confirmed this with Profoto. Also, it does not work well with Camranger. My A7R5 has connection issues over and over again. I just picked up the R62 and it works "flawlessly" with both of these systems. I'll be buying the new R52 to pair along with the R6 and could not be happier. Don't get lost in specs. Functionality and simply "working" is more important to me.
Then if you're not a Sony shooter, you should be. A6400 (APS-C) has Sony's AI AF, for just $1400. A7C ii (full-frame) has it too, and 33MP, for $2200. And both take (relatively) cheap Sigma glass.
@@Snapit551 The a7cr is tough to beat, if you want a light, compact, camera, for schlepping into the boonies, for landscape. Pair it with the Sony 20-70 f/4, or some Sigma i-Series primes, and you've got a hell of a landscape kit.
It was Canon stopping 3rd party glass on their mount that clinched it for me - as tempting as their new full frame cameras are with their sales recently, I couldn’t do it. I’m holding onto my M-mount m50 and m50ii with my sigma primes, but when I had the opporunity to go FF, I went with Panasonic with their access to Sigma glass
The problem with your analysis is that Canon R5II is allegedly selling like hot cakes. Because it IS an extremely good allarounder with a price much below Sony a1. 8K 60p, good 4K 120p, decent FullHD 240p, 45Mpix 30fps 14-bit RAW, AF that is said to be revolutionary (unlike the Nikon Z8)
It’s a very bad analysis. I think that the r5ii has excellent specs and features and I would understand it if that makes Canon a lot of money. Mocking the photo resize tooling just doesn’t make any sense when they ignore all the major improvements. The r1 should have been called r3ii. That’s a huge mistake that Canon made.
@@arjenpolstra more likely the R3 wasn't called the R1 because it's stacked sensor is only 1/170th of a second compared to the A1's 1/260th and Nikon's 1/270th which are just shy of a mechanical shutter. The R1 at 1/300th of a second is Canon's only stacked sensor that performs at the level of a mechanical shutter meaning you can use its 40 FPS mode with confidence that your shot won't have any weird bowing, artefacts, or banding. R1 very much fits since it is the no compromises stacked sensor pro sports body. The R5 Mk 2 is a bit slower than even the R3, and frankly is a bit disappointing as they'll still be too many cases where you'll need to use the mechanical shutter. The R3 Mk2 will likely use the R5 Mk2 sensor or demo Canon's first shutterless ready 45 MP sensor if they can get it past 1/260th.
When I was getting into photography all my favourite youtube photographers were using Canon and were in the process of converting to mirrorless. I'm grateful I made the decision to go Sony after I tested a A7R IV and feel in love with 61MP. It has saved me lots of money on lenses that's for sure.
I'll be 70 next year. Half my photography life was film, and I used a variety of cameras. When I switched to digital photography, I only shot Canon. This changed in 2016 with my exposure to the Sony Alpha series cameras. My initial purchase was a Sony A7R3 and a G-Master 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I purchased a Sigma MC-11 adapter and used the rest of my Canon L-Series lenses. My current favorite set-up in my Sony A7R4 with a Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 lens. Canon no longer gets my attention.
14:34 You bet that limiting 3rd party lenses is costing Canon more market share than anything else. I know people who waited to get into the RF system and are still waiting for Sigma and Tamron lenses to come out.
As someone who worked in the company and Canon camera user if you check Canon’s global worldwide sales today it’s the same as it was in 2006. The company hasn’t grown in 20 years. Somehow they refused to understand or accept Document processing is dying, imagining industry is changing fast. They just don’t have the $ to spend as Sony does. That’s why the layoffs. Sony is going to eclipse them soon. Good podcast!
Lifelong Canon shooter. Between ditching the EOS-M and not allowing (good) 3rd party lenses…. Also, my 11-22mm died with almost zero use. I googled it and best case scenario they send me another.
I tried that 11-22 and was shocked about the lack of sharpness compared to the old 10-22 (discontinued). So I got rid of my 11-22 and found two never used 10-22's at a local camera shop. It might be a good idea to see if you can find the old 10-22 somewhere. It is a way clearer and sharper lens than the 11-22
They're certainly behind, and that's not very good in my opinion - and I think the big disappointment with their long-expected flagship R1 shows that very clearly. The R5 mk II is a nice camera, but it's basically a Nikon Z8 in a much lighter body. But from a feature point of view it doesn't have anything (useful - not the gimmicky eye control) substantial that its competitors, including the Sony A1, doesn't have. And the R1 is disappointing, it's an R3 mk II in a bigger body ("Something Big is Coming" official teaser). What Canon is helped by is that a part of their fanbase is fanaticized, but that won't last forever, and more and more people start to look at the competition. And the other part is that Canon has not allowed third party AF lenses in, though they started with 3 or 4 APS-C lenses from Sigma and Tamron... but they need to do that with FF as well, including the Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2, 35-150 2-2.8, and others. Otherwise, they will slip away even more, as the sales from DSLR lenses (which probably account for the "Canon is #1") will get lower and lower over time, and Canon will eventually discontinue them.
The Z8's stacked sensor is closer to a mechanical shutter at 1/270th of a second compared to 1/160th of a second which is the biggest disappointment of the R5 Mk 2. The R3's stacked sensor being 1/170th of a second compared to the R1's 1/300th is likely why the R3 wasn't the R1 as it would necessitate switching to the 12 FPS mechanical shutter to ensure your critical shot didn't have rolling shutter artefacts.
I’m team canon as I’ve been shooting it for almost 30 years…. The R6 is so good that I’ve decided to take the dive and begin to work professionally again! Shooting is fun again. Stop complaining about the f’n R1. It’s for certain people. 1 models always are!!!!! The R5m2 may be the best all around camera ever created.
The people who are making such statements & talking about how canon isn't going spec for spec with it's competitors are mostly not the people who use these cameras for a living. I work as a food photographer and best believe I don't care for any of these new camera features. I use a camera that's over five years old, & it gets the job done, at no point have I ever had a client who was displeased with my work due to the camera I use. It is merely a tool to help you achieve your end goal, most of you seem to have forgotten that, even if you're into other forms of photography, rather get advice from people who actually use it on a professional level in those specific categories.
I moved from Canon (1DX III) to Fuji! Canon is no longer number one. Canon was crowned number one at a time when people thought that good photos are only made from full frame cameras.
I think the R5 ii is compelling, it's almost the same camera as the Z8, which is only a year old. Sure the Sony A1 is similar and 3 years old, but it's also another £2000 which is an insane difference that can't be understated. If you want a 45mp stacked sensor camera, you'd be much happier in the Canon or Nikon systems than Sony.
The r5 ii comparison to the z8 is exactly what I thought. A few new things but close comparison. Z8 is quite a bit less too and offers Nikon, 3rd party and even Sony lens use. If I was a new buyer I would surely consider it a better value
@troypast3589 Yep, defo agree, but realistically it costs a lot in both money and effort to change camera systems, so for people already invested in RF, it most likely makes more sense to buy the R5ii and it's good they now have a competitive option.
@@willherondale6367 I am thinking z8 for the wife and either the 400mm 4.5 or the 600mm 6.3. Perfect for wildlife/ bird and light. Budget is great as well. So even if you had a lot of rf glass, the telephotos from Nikon will still be cheaper with a camera for those longer ranges vs canon glass with faster apertures
@@troypast3589 I recommend the 600 f/6.3 over the 400 f/4.5 (and own both) for wildlife, especially birds. The 600 is a pleasure to use when on anything from the Z6 to the Z9, though it balances perfectly with the Z8. It works well with the 1.4X TC and has really great sharpness and contrast from corner to corner while weighting almost nothing. It feels like using a big prime and has the results to match, without breaking your back. You get a wee bit more to hold onto than the 400 f/4.5 (a better feeling grip), has a gold ring of bling, edges out the IQ, and it fits in many camera backpacks easily. The only thing I would criticise on both lenses is the lack of lens lungs for attaching a strap, though they are both light enough to just have attached to a body with a strap attached to that or if you use the PD system you can mount a attachment point to the tripod collar and have one attachment there and the other on your body. Nikon bird AF bests the Sony A1, Canon R3, and Canon R5 on most subjects. But assuredly the R5 Mk2 and R1 will have an edge now. But your wife is unlikely to miss shots because of the AF. Steve Perry and others have excellent setup guides on setting up the Z8 for wildlife and birds. Usually this involves cycle AF and 3D tracking handoff buttons where you acquire the subject with an area AF mode then hold a fn button to switch to 3D tracking.
Yup! Talking about canon gives them the most views and talking about gear gives them even more views. And when you add something negative to canon, Sony fans come out the woodworks 😂.

@@bruceinmyheart euro 24 soccer was predominantly Sony on the sidelines. I was surprised. Canon should be abundant in the Olympics but since they are handing them out I would not use that as a gauge.
I'm loving my Nikon primarily because it takes all lenses via adapter. Megadap pro for E mount lenses, Meike for EF glass, and the nikon adapter for F mount.
A lot of things i bought Sony for, but Third party lens support was the reason. I for instance LOVE my Sigma 35mm F1.2, it's image quality is unique, and for a prime it's very versatile. And price was it's was low enough, that i bought it, same thing from nikon/Canon i would not buy. I was also lucky on Sony 50mm F1.2 gm for 1500€, i bought before Sigma 50mm F1.2 came out, that one is amazing too.
im just happy that sony is putting so much pressure on canon's butt, without it im sure something like the eos R8 would not exist as it is ata that price point
@@troypast3589yeah I keep having to bring this up. The chart Tony showed was only for mirrorless sales. Sony came out with mirrorless cameras in 2011, canon came out with mirrorless cameras at the end of 2018. How is it Sony had a 7 almost 8 year head start to develop mirrorless technology and is in the number 2 spot for mirrorless camera sales behind canon that came out with mirrorless cameras 7 years after Sony. But Sony is leaving canon in the dust… right? Make it make sense please.
Cameras are expensive and glass even more so. Canon leveraged their late entry into mirrorless by allowing ef glass to be used on the new cameras. That was a huge advantage that allowed them to stay ahead now for years. On the flip side, Sony has been slow to create glass and even relied on 3rd parties to get lenses to market. Both of these have allowed Canon to stay in the game (and will for years) BUT they have quite simply been losing market share and will likely continue to do so. Why? Because they are not producing ground breaking sensors. Lead, follow, or get out of the way - Canon has chosen to follow. They will not lead market share indefinitely unless they lead.
Canon still have a good 50% market share (down from holding 80% for years), they still put Sony in with Others in their competition breakdown. It'll take a bit longer before a sleeping giant recognises a new player.

With that said, I’m curious… what could canon and other companies do to revolutionize the industry (I know one answer that is most likely going to come up is “Global Shutter” because that’s the buzz word for this year and the new megapixel war of photo tech, but Canon came out with global shutter in a commercial grade video camera back in 2016! Now to leverage that as a mute point, people have stated that it wasn’t a full frame sensor it was a super 35, or they’ll say things like it was “commercial grade” all those things are true, but you know what else is true, it didn’t serve a purpose. No different than the professional photographers not overly impressed with Sony’s a9 iii. No one is really raving about it and the global shutter. Just a bunch of CZcamsrs who are obviously endorsed by Sony (or wanting to be endorsed by Sony). Here’s the truth behind all these cameras. There’s really NO other place for them to go other than adding certain features! The result of these companies adding certain features will be those who love that brand will talk about how amazing it is that the camera manufacturer they love came out with such great technology and bash every other brand (just like we’re seeing in this video and in the comments section) and 2. It’ll cause every other manufacturer to eventually follow suit. In the case of Sony, so many Sony fans are talking about how Sony is leading the industry. But once again, the canon R5 was revolutionary and caused Nikon and Sony to release a high megapixel flagship to compete with it because Canons semipro camera made their before products inadequate and irrelevant. Then you have the fact that Sony had a 7 year head start on canon in the mirrorless camera world and still is in second place for mirrorless cameras sold from a technology design that Sony created! There’s also the fact that Sony has NOT changed their LCD screens since 2013 on the back of their cameras and it’s the same interface and screen on all models and doesn’t allow you to even scrub through video modes when you’re playing back video. The screens are lackluster and lacking performance. The touch is terrible, pitch to zoom on all models is slow, and…
I did Canon the favor of waiting for three years to get their sh!t together and instead the shat all over me. Current R3 owner, waiting for the camera they should have built three years ago that still isn't even released yet. Incredible.
After using a7iii, a7R4, a9ii, a7s3, R3, R5, R8 and R6ii, Sony always has the best specs on paper, but I just like to hold Canon's cameras for my photography. I will definitely order a R5ii.
I had an A1 for a day and it could not hold a candle to my R3 or R5 autofocus. I also had an A7IV for two months and I could not rely on it at all. Also, Canon CPS just rocks. Reliable autofocus is too important to me. I'm sure the A9III has this, but it's also tiny in my hands compared to the R3. Canon, it just feels better, looks better and more reliable. Sony is way too green for me.
@@Roysphotos8 not really, does good ergonomics means better feeling? I do think Canon cameras have the best ergonomics. Some cameras like Fuji make you feel good to shoot, but not good at ergonomics. If you use Xh2s, gfx 100s, even the 100ii, and compare them to R3/R6ii, you will know what I mean. AF-on button from the 50sii/100s is just awful, 100ii is better but still far behind R3. In terms of image quality of stacked sensor on the market, I think Canon did a good job (R3 better than a9iii/a1/z9 in terms of dynamic range). So I assume R5ii is better also.
I have been a Canon user for decades ..... but last year I had to switch to Sony. I didn't want to switch, but when comparing what each manufacturer offers on a dollar for dollar "bang for the buck" basis, I just couldn't justify sticking with Canon anymore. And yes, Canon's policy on 3rd party lenses was a big part of this decision. I'm still using my Canon bodies and lenses, but moving forward, any new gear I buy will be Sony (or Nikon if they offer more value per dollar spent).
I actually hope he does that. I was joking with some people a while back when Nikon bought RED and said hey look… now Nikon owns more RF video cameras than Canon does. So it would be all the more hilarious if Rudy went to Nikon. 😂
I'm surprised how down y'all are on the R5ii... I've got one on pre-order and I'm excited about it. I do think some of your criticisms are on point though... particularly around usability and workflow. Maybe more people would buy interchangeable lens cameras if they were as easy to use as a smartphone... if they had "find my " in case they got stolen... or even password protection. It should be trivially easy to upload files directly from the camera to Google or Flickr or wherever... that should be built in. I suspect Canon will sell plenty of R5ii's despite the price difference against the Z8 and they'll eventually end up around the same price anyways. Nikon had a couple of hits with the Z9 and Z8... the jury is still out on the Z6iii though. Random note... why is it the "8"s are great value? In addition to the Z8, the R8 is a great value proposition... has nothing to do with anything, just funny. I do think the biggest challenge for all camera manufacturers is that the previous generation (particularly of Sony and Canon cameras) are really really good. The original R5 is by virtually every account an excellent camera... Sonys A1 is still competitive today (in features, if not in price). There's just not a lot of innovation left in the areas camera makers are focusing... As much as I'm sure I'll appreciate the improved autofocus in the R5ii over my R6, its a marginal change... the only real innovations in the last few years have been Sonys one consumer camera with a global shutter, and canons "some people love it, some people dont care" eye tracking... everything else is incremental.
Aren't cameras far easier to use than phones???? When I take photos with phones, the subjects get away before I make all the adjustments.. That's if I don't drop my phone while making shooting adjustments. I guess this argument can turn into "manual stick drive" vs. "automatic" in car industry.
@@TheTensecondz on my iphone I can take a photo, edit it for color, crop/rotate it, and send it to someone (email, SMS) all within a minute or two if I just want to send something off in a hurry. I love my full frame camera, but the phone is much easier to work with. Tony's constantly talking about computational photography... try taking a phone at night with a modern smartphone, it turns out pretty good even in mediocre conditions! That doesnt even get into gps, security, and other features....
@@seaotter42 If that's the feature you are looking for, then a perfect camera already exists. It's called phone. Carry a camera for taking challenging photos and carry phone for taking everyday shots that you can share instantly.
I love my Canon R3. Probably the best camera to get for Canon shooters who want the flaship for sports but dont want the extra expense of a flagship. I tried to switch to Sony when the A73 came out. But I found my Canon 5D3 colours and the Raw files were still easier to work with than sony and i was working through over a dozen jobs and more and more the Sony files took longer to get the colours I wanted from them. So I went back to Canon. Not saying that Canon is better in every way, but my needs were a colour science that was consistent across the line and a set of standard lenses that are pretty much unmatched... For MY needs.
That’s awesome. Sony has corrected the issues with color in the A7IV and A7RV but in the A1 it was still an issue. Most people that have never used anything other than Sony will laugh because they don’t know what you’re talking about. But I do so thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.
@@hawaiifreespeechnews the R3 doesn't overheat when shooting 4k or 6k. It only overheats when using 120p in 4k, and after about 8mins. That's 32 mins of footage on a 60p timeline. I don't think anyone reasonable is shooting 8 mins of continuous slow motion.
This is what happens when they spent 15 years artificially crippling their cameras. These releases are the only time they haven't done that, but it's too late. They already have the reputation for compromising.
The only relevant CZcamsr, who was enthusiastic about what Canon has launched was Jared, all others were disappointed like you or the 2 brilliant guys from PETA PIXEL. I’ve called Jared a ‘Canon Fan Boy’, which he didn’t like. But I think that’s true, he is a fan boy.
Apparently, the eye-controlled AF is quite good, but Jared didn't have the camera long enough to test how well the eye-controlled AF stayed calibrated. He just had it one day.
@@careylymanjones I think it was the special AF feature for some selected balls ports (soccer, basketball and baseball I guess), which he liked especially. But all the rest is more or less a R3.
Recently i had to choose between Canon R7 and Sony a6700, and i bought the sony because of third party lenses. Something simple as a 35mm or 50mm for Canon isn't available where i live.
I agree completely with what you said. Remember when Sony bought Minolta and they said they were going to be Number 1 in camera sales and everybody laughed. They are getting pretty close. If Canon has another down year and Sony has another up year, it could happen a year from now.
Canon's recent release activity indicates, that next year will become a down year for Canon. Whereas Sony is due to update important camera lines in 2025, including their important pro & enthusiast cash cow, their three years old A7 IV. Nikon had failed expectations and opportunities with their Z6 III unexpectedly miserably, so it is expectable, that by the end of 2025, Nikon will have fallen below the 10% market share threshold (from their current 13%).
@@careylymanjones Nope. Canon just had to prove they could produce a High MP count stacked Sensor and they did that. They had to make a proper Flagship, and they did that also. If anything, this might mark the Rise of Canon.
Canon's overarching marketing strategy has been to manipulate and control their customers. This is evidenced by their intentional crippling of gear because they are hyper-afraid of cannibalization, and also by their off-putting policy on 3rd party lenses. If they were nice and easygoing about things like this, I could deal with their technology being behind Sony and Nikon. But when they are manipulative and controlling, and then their tech lags a full generation behind, and they still charge top dollar for everything, that is just too many negative things to endure any longer.
Canon need to continue the M series with some better lenses and the 32mp. improved sensor. EVF is a must. The M6mk2 was a great camera except for the missing EVF. Some of my pics are equally as good as R6mk2 and my old 30mp R. Make it at a good price.
Tony & Chelsea, this discussion makes me think about making a change from Canon to Sony due to Sony's relationship efforts, third party lens acceptance, and attention to suggestions of the general public or knowledgeable influencers. It seems like Canon is a bit arrogant and insensative to current and potential customers.
long time Canon guy here... and I love my R5 ... like you I didn't see a reason to upgrade to the Mk II ... for me, I'm locked in.. .too much $ invested in glass. but I'm ok with that because I capture beautiful stuff with what I have. Thanks guys, keep up the great work !!
My hands are getting bad, so I started using the old 17-40 f/4 cause it's lite and works (R5). Am finding this one lens does 90% of my shooting. For more reach, I just enable crop for video and photo's just crop in post. This was a $500 lens new from B&H.
Is there an impact to Canon's bottom line when they can't seem to manufacture what they design? It takes many months for their products to become readily available in stores for purchase (e.g. the RF 200-800 which started shipping last Nov still isn't readily available, and BTW I refuse to preorder something -- not my idea of customer service and customer retention). 18:19 this is literally why everyone on CZcams and rumors sites are hating the R1, yet canons doing what the other brands are doing and people seem to have an issue with it. It’s like talking out of both sides of your mouth about what you want and what you’re tired of seeing which ironically are the same things.
I'm a Sony guy but Canon has it's uses. I think if your business is about capturing people in a flattering way, Canon color science is excellent. I also feel Canon lags behind the competition because of their reliability requirements. Sony is the reason we all now look for overheating tests. Sony has always invented things ahead of the curve and that's why I like them, but it takes a few updates for them to have all the features they're capable of and Sony's always have some quirks here and there. It's not crippling to where you NEED a reliable camera, but if I'm trying to sell a consistent product, like headshots or newborn photos. I'd still say Canon's better reliability really speaks volumes. That said I'm finding it hard to want an R1 when the A9III is available. I find it hard to justify the C400 because the FX6 is cheaper and while older, I have the lenses already. I find it hard to want an R6ii when Nikon has been showing off this year. I also find it hard to want Canon, Nikon or Sony because Fuji has an element of fun, makes medium format and Panasonic is similar to Canon's reliability but has the best Micro four thirds option for video. The GH7 is the pinnacle of camcorder technology but dressed as a mirrorless. So I think we've reached a point where all these brands need to pick a direction where they'll land in a few years or fight really hard for market share.
People seem to accuse you guys of having a bias. However, I think you guys have been in the industry for so long that you obviously have your favorite of the moment. No doubt Canon, Nikon have all enjoyed the kind of zeal you have at the moment maybe more so for Sony, but that there is still a place in your hearts for your previous fondness for Nikon or perhaps Canon. I think it's cool how you can juggle your history and predilections in assessing the camera industry and the models offered by the leading manufacturers at any given time. Keep up the great work.
I feel the 3rd party lens stance was a bigger issue then they realised it would be, because as you stated their glass is pricey. and if you market to the little man (thru advertising like with Andre Agasse) you need to keep them as much if not more then the “news” people who can afford the top end models. Innovation comes but improving on flaws and listening to their customer base i think will help them as well.
I'm dating the bodies and marrying the lenses. Canon was never #1 on the lens front. If you put me in a room with that new R1 and a subject, I'm going to get the same results on my Nikon D4 and the 85mm g 1.4 (argueably better results).. same with my Canon 1DX Mk II and the Ef f/1.8 ... why would i ever buy either of these 2 cameras? Outside the room...We shot birds and animals back in the day too and made crazy good photos.. yeah these new fancy autofocus bodies make it "easier" but it doesnt make you better photographer. The less you have to think and work the less you learn. I dont want the camera doing everything for me. I can have the best camera ever made, but the guy next to me thats just plain better than me is going to smoke me in taking photos with older gear. My Nikon Z8 definitely doesnt make me a better photographer 100% , literally the same thing with these 2 cameras.
The thing is that it makes you better. It gives you more options. It won't make up for the lack of skill but you'll have better images with the z8 than if you had a worse body.
I have a theory why Canon aren’t doing as great as they should be. Bear with me. But I believe part of this is down to Canon imposing the side hinged rear screen on us. Every single camera they produce has this screen, it’s as if they’ve a secret contract where they can only use this screen. If they gave us a choice then I think they’d sell more cameras. Yes, lots of people like the side hinged screen, that’s fine but there’s a silent majority that hate using this screen, photojournalists, documentary and wedding photographers I know much prefer the tilt screen, as they kinda don’t need to film themselves or take selfies. I know personally of 4 photographers that will not use Canon in a professional environment just because of the rear screen implementation. And when I speak to videographers if they’re not using an external monitor they prefer the tilt ahead of the side hinged for filming. So that’s my take, if you disagree that’s fine but I believe it plays some part in Canon’s falling sales.
You say you're excited to see what Canon will do next. But what time frame are we talking about? It took them all this time to come up with the r1. By the time Canon comes up with something similar to the a93, Sony will have moved on to something even better. We may be talking late 2026 early 2027. And Nikon will have moved beyond the initial z9 and Z8.
Sony is moving as slow as Canon these days with updating their camera bodies, and that's made even worse by the fact that Sony is terrible at updating their firmware with new features. Despite their poor market share, I think Nikon is going to be the one to watch in the next few years. They've got a fantastic range of really high quality lenses and reasonable costs for the quality unlike Canon. And their autofocus is now catching up with Sony, and their cameras have better video features than Sony now. However, Sony has the deep pockets to speed up their innovation again if they ever decide they actually have to put effort in again.

Sony has been slow since Canon has been in hiding and Nikon is at Sony’s mercy for sensors…. Likely Sony has dozens of cameras in the labs and was just waiting to release until they had too. One of the reasons it is is frustrating Canon has not responded sooner is the fact that competition has slowed dramatically. I am sure we will see many new Sony products now that Canon has fired their shot. The R1 set a low bar for Sony to respond, which is why so many are frustrated.
@@troypast3589 Sony is also at Sony's mercy for sensors. Sony's semiconductor business provides to Apple, Nikon, Sony, and many others. All it takes is a new iPhone to halt all other production, very much the same struggle AMD has with TSMC when Apple want all the 2nm process node. Sony's semiconductor business doesn't get to play favourites between Sony's imaging division and Nikon, especially not when their equipment to produce sensors comes from Nikon and Nikon want their sensor design fabricated to spec, on budget, and to their deadline. People suggesting Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group plays favourites to Sony Imagine Division is daft at best. If not for Nikon, Apple, and other big partners, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group wouldn't have the investment to put it so far ahead. With Nikon they get to have 20% of the full frame sensors, otherwise they would be fighting Canon with 10%. Canon is huge, they had 80% of the market for over a decade.
Wow, this discussion is just like the discussion in most vlogs about OM-1 when it came. Everybody said Olympus/OM System was nothing new and not any kind of development from previous cameras. I have noticed Canon sensors are "little lacking". And I now hear diskussions about many brands, that megapixel race are stopping and brands slowly go back to 25 mp. I think that Canon will have a weak time, but come back in a few years as a really strong manufacturer. And Nikon will take market share from both Canon and Sony so they all end up equally big. And I think that the "other brands" market share will increase. Reason, size of sensor and mp is big the issue any more. It's usability, durability, weight, design and friendliness that people value more and more nowadays. Both Panasonic and OM System will grow again if they go back into the consumer market as they used to be so good in. What you say is that Canon lost the glory, and I think you are right about that. I have to tell you - I love the regular R7... I've gotten amazing photos with it. However, I have occasionally noticed rolling shutter so eliminate that, and I'm golden. I'd buy it in a second no matter the price. I have an R5 also but I seem to always reach for the R7 for my wildlife shots ..

I was waiting for the R5 mark2 and ended up buying a R6 mark2 instead. Wasn’t willing to pay $4300 for basically nothing better. And skipped the R5 because all the reviews said low light was better on the R6 mark2. Let alone the autofocus. Those were the two most important things for me. Got it with the 24-105 F4 for $2999. Couldn’t be happier. And saved a ton.
Nice! I think with so many reviews and modern camera tech being so good, GAS is certainly a thing. Upgraded from an RP that got me back into photography after getting an M50 as a webcam and getting the itch. I upgraded to a 1st Gen R6 2.5 years ago and find it to be an amazing camera. Hoping to add an R5 soon and finally jump in. Maybe a Mark ii if Amazon gets one of their killer 12 month 0% interest programs going again...
The R6 ii is a great camera. Lowlight isn’t better than the R5 just different. CZcamsrs and others explain this poorly. It’s the megapixel count and the lenses you’re using, in addition to the exposure triangle. They really need to learn how to explain this better.
I am not sure what reviews you looked at but with all other things being equal, when you downscale 45mp image down to 24mp then it will have the same high-iso noise performance as a native 24mp sensor would produce, due to capturing the same amount of total light. But with decent lenses the 45mp sensor image will be sharper. And the R5 Mii has a BSI sensor as well, so that will perform better in low-light (so I am not sure where you got the idea that it was nothing better). And although the R5 M1 has an older sensor than the R6 mii, it actually performs better as well, watch this video (ideally in 4K) from the 2.30 mark that compares images side by side at different isos: watch?v=qStdJDmkNcc The R5Mii also has higher res back LCD, viewfinder, comes with a top lcd screen and the sensor is stacked. Sorry but you got what you paid for, which is still a good camera but not as good as the R5 Mii.
I agree with you Tony. If you already have R5 there are not any big reasons to upgrade to R5 mk2. If you need to stop action you can always rely on mechanical shutter 12fps and even with electronic 20fps is not THAT bad. Even with my old Sony A7III I could stop 2 fast running and flying dogs at once only with 10fps. For the most people who shoots portraits, landscape, etc there is no really good reason at all to upgrade, same pixel amount and with portraits you don't need super fast readout speed or sticky eye AF. For sports it might be useful but still R5 is amazing camera even for that. There are proof out there with current pictures that it works pretty good. I have to say I'm a bit bored with camera industry at the moment. They should invent more better and cheaper lenses instead of selling "speed and 8k" which are pretty lame to be honest.
I think you said it when you were talking about how people view content. They view them on tiny screens, so gone are the days of needing higher megapixels.
With 3 control dials you can set one for ISO and it's extremely fast: faster than saying ISO 800. Personally I have my R6ii set up with the front dial for shutter, rear dial for aperture and the 3rd dial for exposure compensation using auto ISO
The length of time to release these units, the really incremental rather than innovative improvements, the really odd launch dates (missing that prime Olympic window), the really crappy launch events and the simultaneous layoffs at Canon USA, including Rudy Winston - one of their prime spokespeople - all point to some type of internal turmoil for me. But there's one other thing - I'm a Canon shooter, with an R5. I honestly have no use for the upgrades in these new cameras - my tech saturation limit has been reached. I think more and more hobbyists will decide that is the case for them as well. Manufacturers have to find a new angle other than new sensors, faster FPS and more megapixels.
I think canon r1 is great the way it is. It’s going by what pro journalists needs a reliable must get the pic camera, no matter how dark or rough the condition is. The autofocus is extremely good perhaps the top camera right now. It is built to get the shot.
IMO, the decision as to what body you use is dependent on what you shoot. Personally, I think more about the glass than the camera body. I upgraded to the R5MII because of the stacked images and the rolling shutter fix. Selling my R5 lessened the MII's price tag a bit. I still am offset by Canon's production issues with new equipment and the "back-ordered / wait list" process. I removed myself from the 200-800mm waitlist. I'll see if Canon opens their RF fit to more 3rd party lenses. If not soon, I have considered Sony... more times than not.
why cameras don't use internal storage?! I don't want 1TB but at least 250GB. If an Iphone can hold that with a fraction of space why on earth any camera manufacturer won't skip the cards or at least use an in between drive so buffer don't break the flow of taking pictures
I agree. Many other developments (across all brands) are nice but not really adding user-value. Internal memory would be a real user-centric feature that would, I think anyway, be valued by many buyers.

It’s not just the cost of putting an SSD in there, but because of the cameras capabilities, they’d have to re-wire the entire structure of the camera for heating and ergonomics. For example the Canon R5 mark ii and R1 would be significantly larger if those cameras had internal SSD. And in the case of the R5 there would need to be a complete remap of venting and insulation because that camera shoots raw 8k (kind of like how much larger the Nikon Z8 is compared to the R5, but if the R5 mark ii had internal storage it would need to be even larger than the Z8 with more venting capabilities.

Let’s say something happens, there’s the cost of shipping the product back to Canon, and since most SSD’s are now soldered onto the motherboards it would mean that the company would have to replace the entire motherboard which is an added expense for everyone involved and would take more time. Theses cameras are not hasselblads. And while I agree with you both and would love to have internal SSD’s that have a functional use, I understand why the big 3 (Sony, Nikon and Canon) don’t do it.
Mike, Hasselblad, DJI and Leica cameras use internal storage. There's no technical reason it can't work. if anything it would give them more flexibility in the design, because they could place the storage anywhere rather than in the camera grip where it can be externally accessible.
@@TonyAndChelsea I hear you! But if they have a camera grip with storage that’s external storage. And as far as the other brands you mentioned, you are 100 percent correct. But my assessment is the same. Those are specific specialty cameras. Canon, Nikon and Sony are focused on all around cameras that do everything. I would be concerned with them places full frames 8k video recording capabilities directly towards internal storage. It would need to be so compressed and watered down. When working with full scale production video cameras, they don’t even have internal storage at 4k and those are over 10 times the size of mirrorless cameras. So I’m not sure the heating structure would work for mirrorless cameras that do everything. But those specialized cameras that you mentioned I think it’s fine for them because they have 1 specific focus.

In Japan, the pride of building technology is hardware, not software. And all issues that you mentioned are software issues. So unfortunately I'm afraid that Japanese brands will slowly fade out, unless they address their software problem.
I've been watching R1 and R5 Mark II previews from all the people who Canon flew to Phoenix. Some other people received one or both of the cameras by mail or by special Canon courier. At B&H, the R5-2 has already cracked "TOP SELLER" status -- even though nobody expects it to start shipping before August 20. And now CZcams is loaded with reviews done by people who haven't touched either of the cameras. Sorry you didn't get a trip to Phoenix. But when you've actually touched one of these cameras, maybe you'll do another....different....review.
A "native" Canon EF shooter with some Canon M and RF (R6m2) and Fuji (xt5 with Fuji top zooms, not primes); I have put up 3 versions (5dm4 with 24-70 m2, R6m2 with 24-70 m2 with canon adapter and Fuji xt5 with 16-55 2.8 R LM WR) of the same scene, with similar/same editing and asked several people to choose which one they found best and why. The ALL have chosen the 5dm4 version due to the overall feel/colour of the pics. The newer bodies are geared towards those much fewer of photographers who need faster AF fx (the reason I bought the R6m2 was the AF in birding) but for the most of us we don´t need the faster AF. Landscapses do not move very fast these days, people usually do not move very fast either.
I think Canon loses on other fronts as well. Their budget primes are a much worse offering compared to others. More and more people look elsewhere for good reasons.
Yeah they probably with them saying that was that the R5 came out and Nikon and Sony didn’t have an answer for it. Then the Nikon Z9 and Sony A1 came out and cost at least $1500 more for a stacked sensor being the only real difference. These are all opinion videos but they are misleading. The only issue Nikon has had in mirrorless was AF. The truth is that Nikons mirrorless AF is still better that 8/10 DSLR’s. So this doesn’t hold weight. Nikon and canon are fine.

@@troypast3589😂 so ummm… do we need to have a therapy session. The 8k recording overheating has been a thing of the past. Only Sony people keep bringing it up. Oh and the 8k in Sony is dialed back a lot (due to compression) just like their raw photos are compressed. 2 type A cards have slower read out speeds and bottle neck the buffer when shooting at 30 frames per second. So when you clap back and talk about all the features make sure you’re not talking to someone who owned both cameras. Just because you’re upset that you don’t like my assessment of the cameras doesn’t mean you can go off of stats that you downloaded from the website to give your vague impression of the tech. Oh and also, it’s possible to over heat the A1 shooting 8k. It’s around the 50 minute mark depending on conditions (but you have to switch cards because they get full quick) Just like you can get to 50 minutes shooting 8k on the Canon R5 without it over heating once again by switching cards and stopping the video it allows it to cool down. Not to mention you have the option of just blowing a regular fan on it that you can get on Amazon for under $10. There are options and work arounds for everything that goes beyond a stat sheet. Go try using all the cameras I mentioned above without a bias view and you’ll see that there’s really NO difference between them. No one cares in a professional setting. It’s CZcams people and fanboys that care about the stats of flagship cameras and get excited over gear they’ll never use (or companies the CZcamsrs are obviously endorsed by) that get excited over the gear.
@@tonygerassi1502yeah because honestly how often do CFExpress cards fail? SD cards fail especially the cheaper ones. But both CFExpress cards type A and B rarely fail. It’s a different level of card and professionals know that amateurs don’t! This is something that CZcamsrs push because they are stuck in the old SD card failures when they bought cheap cards they were shooting on or didn’t format the cards after every shoot or switching cameras. The card failure is more of an SD card issue (and yeah I know I’m going to have someone respond with a lie about the times their, or someone else’s, CF card failed or something. This is the internet and I expect someone’s going to lie just to NOT be wrong 😂).
I haven't read all of the comments but, the 1 series canon cameras have always been lower megapixels than the 5 series cameras. What Canon has always done, was simply repeated. It seems to me that camera buyers have tried to push Canon into changing its direction to please millions of different people. I'm here to say that it's almost impossible to get me and you to agree.
Canon is like Apple… Apple cannot seem to release a jaw dropping phone with amazing high resolution photos and video. Year after year Apple release phones with disappointing cameras compared to competitors and they overheat and the screen cannot be seen until they cool down! Canon should be blowing away their competitors…
Apple wants to be like Apple but they act like Microsoft. Where are their market disrupting products? None since the 5d mk ii in 2008…. Instead we get scores of redundant products based on the same sensor over and over. The new “features” are things we have already seen in other products for years. As for Apple not producing a jaw dropping phone, no IDEA what that means. iPhones have out performed Androids for years and are generally a generation or two ahead in overall performance. iPhones are the main reason Canon has been losing profits and the ability to spend on R&d in the first place (which has been declining year after year for sometime now ). Sony at least saw that future and produced camera sensors for scores of phone manufacturers- including Apple. Perhaps Canon is fearful of camera sales as a whole and is shifting their bets elsewhere. I hope Canon will innovate and bring better products to market, but I am no longer convinced they will or even want to.
@@troypast3589 The phone part of Apple I like. But the camera they have on their phone is not an industry leader. They also have had a serious overheating issue for years now. You cannot use their phone for navigation or photos in hot weather as the screen eventually darkens to the point you cannot see it until it cools. They claim that’s by design… I literally have to have a vent in the car pointing to the rear to keep it cool while driving. The true resolution of their cameras are hyped and they play with marketing terms to try and convince us it’s a great camera. It’s ok… good… but not great. However, I still use an Apple phone…
20:51 you misread it. The chart you displayed was only mirrorless sales. Canon still sells DSLR’s so does Nikon! The D850 Nikon still sells to those who still want the best DSLR ever made.
@@TigerWould2 they run out of stocks sooner or later, just because it sells well doesnt mean it will keep going. Esp when mirrorless prices have dropped far, the r100 being what it is is still a nice entry to mirrorless, and new dslrs are going up against tougher comp day by day.

It didn’t include DSLR’s so the numbers look skewed. It’s no secret that Tony love Sony cameras and that’s fine. He goes out of his way to produce bias content and that’s fine but at least own it and say that you’re partial to a camera company! Jared jokes about the canon money truck but we all know his bias in favor canon. Tony acts like he’s NOT bias to Sony and he just does this content for everyday photographers while doing “competitive” shoot out with cameras that cost more and have lower megapixels then saying it has less of a noise issue. He posts a chart that is only talking about mirrorless cameras and passes it off as the overall camera market when Sonys had an 8 year head start and still is in second place for mirrorless cameras then acts like Sonys catching up to canon. It’s very misleading.
I don't know how the eye focus functions, but I'd use it IF I had an activate button that I could hold-down-press, look at a part of the frame with a subject I want, it could lock in on the face and then follow that face and I let go of the button to stop following my eye so I can look around the rest of the scene for composition. EYE can see it being useful, but I'm guessing it doesn't function this way (yet). If I'm wrong please LMK. Either way I'm waiting for the R1x/R1s that's rumored.
Canon's refusal to really open their system to third-party lenses, in a market where a credible competitor does open its system, is damning. Back in the day, when Canon had no real competition, they could get away with crap like that. Not anymore. I can buy a capable Sony body and Sigma lenses for lots less money than a comparable Canon body and Canon glass.
Canon relies on their lenses for profit. Chinese lenses are about to devour lens market share. Canon is simply not ready as they do not have the sensor market like Sony does.
I was interested in getting back into photography but my god the prices have gone bananas. It has been expensive but now the business is sort of trying to destory itself. First the familys were lost. Now the amateurs and beginnes are being put off by the prices. Even me as an old enthusiast are having second thoughts.
Canon has been innovating on the lens side of things more than the bodies. Their lead engineers even said the other day that they have some amazing lens that no one has seen before coming. The 24-105 f2.8, 100-300 f2.8, 10-20 f4 were all really cool and unique lenses. Not to mention the 28-70 f2 that’s rumored for a version two possibly coming soon. The big three all produce amazing images and all three are approaching the game differently. Canon just seems to be taking the lens route.
The 24-50 2.8 is small and nice , the 20-70 f4 is light and wide , the 35-150 2-2.8 is a tank that doesnt break the bank. The 17-50 f4 is nice and versatile. The sirui's 1.2 are 300 bucks each from 16mm all the way to 75 . The upcoming 24-70 f2 also is lighter and wider. The lenses, the color science are the variables that count the most . Canon is blowing the competition out of the water. Nikon cannot innovate to the same degree because of their primitive mount not designed from the ground up and Sony ergonomics and menu systems truly suck . Eye focus far superior for sports photography. Nobody else comes close.
Back in March I decided to buy the R5 when it hit $4000 CAD, down from $5300 CAD (launch price) . My concern at thy time was period firmware updates using subscription based model for AI auto focus and other presumed improvements. I want going to pay an annual fee to use a full frame expensive camera. I'm glad I got the R5, it's a big step up from my EOS R. So now I have a 30MP backup camera and the R5 as my main camera.
Nikon needed to catch up, since they are falling to #3 and still losing customer, so they were motivated to compete. Canon sits at #1, and is complacent.
I watched many of your videos lately and was close to ordering the R5II but then you got me considering Sony .. But I ended up buying the original R5 as it's at a great price now and a older 85mm 1.4 IS EF mount and a adapter. So the total price was way way less then the new options would have been and for what I do it's still super great. Then I will wait some years and see what Canon comes out with next time, if it has enough propper new features that I want to upgrade.
Bodies are only so much. SONY catching up with lenses is their best bet to beat Canon. 300mm f/2.8 is a great new lens - Canon has nothing even close (for size and weight). That one lens is having me reconsider Canon.
I think the biggest tell that Canon is falling off the top is that my local camera store has shifted its rental catalogue from mostly Canon to an almost majority of Sony rentals. You also see more people renting Sony gear more often in the lineup of pro's grabbing items for weddings/projects. When I went in to rent an R5 for trial purposes, they also recommended some Sony/Nikon items to try. Normally, I hear the advice "don't switch brands, just wait until your brand releases an equivalent for whatever work you're trying to do". That advice is still touted... but with an addendum of "but not always". I see these very reasonable folks suggesting alternatives to Canon as a "possible option". The door has opened from "stay with Canon" to "well... Canon ain't always on the ball, and Nikon/Sony are also pretty great". I would also like to point out that the Canon AF still seems to have a bit of an edge over Sony/Nikon for stills. Sony appears to have better AF for video. Nikon has surprised me with the best wildlife AF. This still leaves the majority of AF stills wins for Canon (people, sports), but since video is so prevalent today, Sony having better video AF really stings as a Canon user. I think this further highlights the very serious competition Canon faces today, they used to be top dog in all these categories, now they're trading blows instead of dominating. That's a big mis-step.
I think you should watch the video again so you'll know why they are comparing it to the other brand.Also considering the money you pay for "competitive features".
I've been a Canon fan going back to the film days. Canon and Nikon get you the most true to life image out of camera with less post processing. Not to mention Canon usually has an easier to learn menu system. However when Canon went mirrorless, they changed the lens system, twice. Then they don't have very many options for the new systems. They didn't allow 3rd party to make M mount till they abandoned it for R. Yes you can make EF work, with an adapter but they add more physical length and weight to the lens body package and in some instances a lower quality image. Often the same EF lens on a DSLR looks better, than when adapted for R. They should have stuck with EF or made a native dual mount system. They have been able to put EFS and EF on APSC for a while, this shouldn't be any harder. After that I started looking elsewhere and landed on Sony. While in most cases the equivalent camera has a little lesser quality image before post, you get more features for a better price point. It's just a no brainer at this point. Fujii, Panasonic, and OM have had some decent cameras along the way but no consistency between product lines. Most of thier other models are awful and make it hard to consider them when thinking forward. The thing that has me concerned about Sony recently is, many of thier successor models in the same line have been a step backwards. Often more expensive on top of that. If they continue this trend, I'm not sure where I'll go.
the rf 24-105 is DAMN soft and useless for group photos. the range of RF FF lenses is terrible and the R6ii's AF and noise @ iso 6400 is just bad. I'd move to sony, only I have a tonne of Canon stuff and the move would be just too costly
You should sell it all and switch if you’re that unhappy. I’d bet that if I took the same pics with all the brands and didn’t label them few would be able to reliably pic the pics by brand.
I bought a lens system (Canon) in the 1980s - and that collection of lens mount is what keeps me on Canon... good or bad, but its very expensive to switch lens mount types
Who wore it better? Chelsea for the win! Canon is a legacy line that is slow and steady with consistency. As long as they have no upcoming duds they will compete on all levels. Their lenses are great but overpriced. Remember "Sony Style" back then, they were into everything, too much too fast and was flooding the market with products called a lifestyle, sacrificing quality IMO.
I'm not sure I understand why you talk about how far behind Canon is because the R1 only has 24 megapixels at the begining of the podcast and at the end you talk about how for the most part nobody needs that many megapixels for how images are viewed now. Actual sports photographers I watch are thrilled with the new R1. I'm still using the 5D MIII and it's fantastic for my needs. As long as Canon provides what works for their users I think they'll be okay.

I have been shooting Canon since 1973 and I have a lot of lenses, only 2 RF. What do they say about the colour of grass? Most people couldn't tell the difference between a RAW and jpeg image, or a full frame and M43. My skills are now redundant, I could sense when a car was going airborne, and press the shutter to get the one frame I needed, now you have 120fps, precapture and 8K video, very little skill needed. I sometimes use a 5Dsr, only 50mp but huge files, 84mp would cause computer meltdown. Incidentally is that an R7 chip upscaled to full frame. I tried a Sony A7rv, I wasn't impressed. At work [mainly motorsport] I was using a 1D, 4mp, for twelve years before I went to the 5Diii. I didn't stay with the 1 series and my income crashed when people started flooding Facebook with free images. A camera is a tool, you don't need it to sing and dance.
Raw doesn't exist to be held side by side to a jpeg, neither does it exist to be seen unedited at all...

Frames for a car airborne is now even achievable with mobile, however the extra 30fps ai tracking will get you that one shot, 2 inches before the car lands! The differentiater in the same pool of photographers

They ignore cost and size in their value benefit analysis.
I think it’s similar to Intel vs. TSMC insofar as Canon is struggling to be both a producer of camera systems AND the sensor silicon that’s inside, while for Sony it’s just one piece of their larger imaging business. Conversely, Sony Imaging’s success isn’t just linked to Sony Camera, but rather the success of all their downstream clients buying sensors en masse (like Apple, Nikon, etc. as you mentioned). As such, Sony has a vested interest in developing market-leading technology to sell to as many companies as possible, not just to hoard it for their own camera bodies. Meanwhile, it’s currently in Canon’s best interests to keep the pace of innovation comparatively slow so they can trickle out updated bodies at regular intervals, even if they had something like a commercially viable global shutter ready (which I very much doubt).
And then there’s Nikon, Fuji, etc. who can all design sensors using Sony’s latest manufacturing process and features for their own cameras, all with the benefit of not having the overhead of sensor production facilities on their own books (similar to how AMD is a “fabless” chip maker). It’s a tough position to be in for Canon for sure, and I don’t think trying to tighten the grip by doing things like banning third party lenses is the fix (quite the contrary).
Correct, but think about it this way. How long did it take for TSMC to catch Intel, and how long did it take Intel to catch up. Intel now has the power. They just don’t have the energy and heat dissipation.

@@TigerWould2TSMC was pretty close to Intel for a very very long time before they surpassed them during the 14nm fuckup. What you’re thinking of is how long for AMD (the first major CPU on TSMC) to catch up, which, after going fabless and moving to TSMC was literally 0 generations. Zen1/+ are GF (foundry spun out of AMD) 14/12nm, and Zen2 was TSMC N7; and Zen2 obliterated Intel in the server market, high end desktop too, Intel only slightly had an edge in gaming, but by Zen3 even that was gone.
And Intel still hasn’t caught up. We won’t know until next year, but it’s honestly looking like they may not catch back up for another few generations.

@@1armbikerthat’s my point. Is that Intel will catch up. They seem behind and they are in some aspects but it’s because they haven’t figured a few things out. In the case of Canon it’s the same thing. Their read out speed isn’t as high because they are using duel pixel tech something that all other brands got rid of a while ago. The canon flagship seems further behind but still suits those who it’s designed for no different than Intel. In the case of the chips for TSMC some of their chips have had issues as well. But they aren’t bogged down by stock holders like Intel was (just like Sony and Nikon aren’t bogged down with investors like Canon is!). It’s the correct analogy based on what’s happening with Intel and what’s happening with Canon.
@@JJARCHIEyeah Intel has drama due to the fact that they hold back and for years profit out drove innovation. Canon is having this same issue. Canon has had global shutter since 2010 (actually longer than that). Didn’t put in a camera until 2016 (the canon C700 global shutter edition) then scrapped that project and went have to their old ways. Canon could have pioneered this is so many ways and chose to just sit on this tech. Then Sony comes out with one and they are still like meh we don’t have to do anything.
As a Canon user for 30 years and an R5+R10 shooter, I agree, Canon is behind and I agree that it is probably by one generation. Nonetheless Canon has a few key advantages that the competition doesn't quite have:
- incredible hardware reliability (Nikon probably the only ones that match them),
- very strong camera bodies including the plastic ones,
- good handling (I preferred my M50 feel in the hand to Sony's A7 which pressed at the wrong place)
- generally incredibly stable firmware from launch (although that seems to be less and less true, the R5 got better with but was pretty good but my R10 doesn't always wake up from power saving mode!)
- very good lenses with backward compatibility to the first generation of AF lenses (maybe because they were lucky to make the right choices from day 1).
That being said, I don't think that Canon has innovated at the pace of the other brands since the 5DII which took every other manufacturer by surprise. The R5 was probably the closer they came to having another 5DII moment in my opinion. Being a late buyer of the R5 (a bit over a year) and having purchased it at close to half of launch price, I am delighted with my choice but, if the Z8 had come out (it was announced but not released) I might have jumped ship. I was also very close to jumping ship with the D850 but I could see mirrorless coming and thought I might jump ship then.
The thing is that Canon isn't exciting anymore, it is very good and I know exactly what I am going to get it and how... and I have taken pictures that I have sold in galleries even recently with either my 5DII or my R5, but Canon doesn't get me excited... Nobody ever asks me how I took this picture, how much time did I spend retouching it on Photoshop or did I combine multiple shots like they did for my first handheld night shot in central London with my 5D that was taken RAW and on which I had barely spent 3 minutes on Lightroom to edit. Now I could take the same picture and get a much better result but nobody would think that there is wizardry involved, it could come out of any camera from Nikon, Fuji, Sony....
I MUST mention that I just went back to Canon due to the fact its "hotshoe" does not play well with Profoto transmitters. It breaks the pins! I confirmed this with Profoto. Also, it does not work well with Camranger. My A7R5 has connection issues over and over again. I just picked up the R62 and it works "flawlessly" with both of these systems. I'll be buying the new R52 to pair along with the R6 and could not be happier. Don't get lost in specs. Functionality and simply "working" is more important to me.
All I need is a camera that has great autofocus and I don’t need ludicrous frame rates or global shutter or a 6k price tag

Then if you're not a Sony shooter, you should be. A6400 (APS-C) has Sony's AI AF, for just $1400. A7C ii (full-frame) has it too, and 33MP, for $2200. And both take (relatively) cheap Sigma glass.
Why would you buy an A6400 when you could have a G9ii for not a lot more and better in every measurable way?@@careylymanjones

@@Snapit551 The a7cr is tough to beat, if you want a light, compact, camera, for schlepping into the boonies, for landscape. Pair it with the Sony 20-70 f/4, or some Sigma i-Series primes, and you've got a hell of a landscape kit.
It was Canon stopping 3rd party glass on their mount that clinched it for me - as tempting as their new full frame cameras are with their sales recently, I couldn’t do it. I’m holding onto my M-mount m50 and m50ii with my sigma primes, but when I had the opporunity to go FF, I went with Panasonic with their access to Sigma glass

The problem with your analysis is that Canon R5II is allegedly selling like hot cakes. Because it IS an extremely good allarounder with a price much below Sony a1. 8K 60p, good 4K 120p, decent FullHD 240p, 45Mpix 30fps 14-bit RAW, AF that is said to be revolutionary (unlike the Nikon Z8)
It’s a very bad analysis. I think that the r5ii has excellent specs and features and I would understand it if that makes Canon a lot of money. Mocking the photo resize tooling just doesn’t make any sense when they ignore all the major improvements. The r1 should have been called r3ii. That’s a huge mistake that Canon made.
@@arjenpolstra more likely the R3 wasn't called the R1 because it's stacked sensor is only 1/170th of a second compared to the A1's 1/260th and Nikon's 1/270th which are just shy of a mechanical shutter. The R1 at 1/300th of a second is Canon's only stacked sensor that performs at the level of a mechanical shutter meaning you can use its 40 FPS mode with confidence that your shot won't have any weird bowing, artefacts, or banding. R1 very much fits since it is the no compromises stacked sensor pro sports body. The R5 Mk 2 is a bit slower than even the R3, and frankly is a bit disappointing as they'll still be too many cases where you'll need to use the mechanical shutter. The R3 Mk2 will likely use the R5 Mk2 sensor or demo Canon's first shutterless ready 45 MP sensor if they can get it past 1/260th.

When I was getting into photography all my favourite youtube photographers were using Canon and were in the process of converting to mirrorless. I'm grateful I made the decision to go Sony after I tested a A7R IV and feel in love with 61MP. It has saved me lots of money on lenses that's for sure.
The R1 is really just a R3 Mk II. The R1 just doesn't compare to a Z9 or an A1. Canon has yet to produce a flagship camera in the mirrorless era.
The R1 is like a new TV that is only 1080p, but has 500fps refresh rate.
I'll be 70 next year. Half my photography life was film, and I used a variety of cameras. When I switched to digital photography, I only shot Canon. This changed in 2016 with my exposure to the Sony Alpha series cameras. My initial purchase was a Sony A7R3 and a G-Master 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I purchased a Sigma MC-11 adapter and used the rest of my Canon L-Series lenses. My current favorite set-up in my Sony A7R4 with a Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 lens. Canon no longer gets my attention.

As someone who worked in the company and Canon camera user if you check Canon’s global worldwide sales today it’s the same as it was in 2006.
The company hasn’t grown in 20 years. Somehow they refused to understand or accept Document processing is dying, imagining industry is changing fast. They just don’t have the $ to spend as Sony does. That’s why the layoffs.
Sony is going to eclipse them soon.

Lifelong Canon shooter. Between ditching the EOS-M and not allowing (good) 3rd party lenses…. Also, my 11-22mm died with almost zero use. I googled it and best case scenario they send me another.
I tried that 11-22 and was shocked about the lack of sharpness compared to the old 10-22 (discontinued). So I got rid of my 11-22 and found two never used 10-22's at a local camera shop. It might be a good idea to see if you can find the old 10-22 somewhere. It is a way clearer and sharper lens than the 11-22
They're certainly behind, and that's not very good in my opinion - and I think the big disappointment with their long-expected flagship R1 shows that very clearly. The R5 mk II is a nice camera, but it's basically a Nikon Z8 in a much lighter body. But from a feature point of view it doesn't have anything (useful - not the gimmicky eye control) substantial that its competitors, including the Sony A1, doesn't have.
And the R1 is disappointing, it's an R3 mk II in a bigger body ("Something Big is Coming" official teaser).
What Canon is helped by is that a part of their fanbase is fanaticized, but that won't last forever, and more and more people start to look at the competition. And the other part is that Canon has not allowed third party AF lenses in, though they started with 3 or 4 APS-C lenses from Sigma and Tamron... but they need to do that with FF as well, including the Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2, 35-150 2-2.8, and others. Otherwise, they will slip away even more, as the sales from DSLR lenses (which probably account for the "Canon is #1") will get lower and lower over time, and Canon will eventually discontinue them.
The Z8's stacked sensor is closer to a mechanical shutter at 1/270th of a second compared to 1/160th of a second which is the biggest disappointment of the R5 Mk 2. The R3's stacked sensor being 1/170th of a second compared to the R1's 1/300th is likely why the R3 wasn't the R1 as it would necessitate switching to the 12 FPS mechanical shutter to ensure your critical shot didn't have rolling shutter artefacts.

Stop complaining about the f’n R1. It’s for certain people. 1 models always are!!!!! The R5m2 may be the best all around camera ever created.
The people who are making such statements & talking about how canon isn't going spec for spec with it's competitors are mostly not the people who use these cameras for a living. I work as a food photographer and best believe I don't care for any of these new camera features. I use a camera that's over five years old, & it gets the job done, at no point have I ever had a client who was displeased with my work due to the camera I use. It is merely a tool to help you achieve your end goal, most of you seem to have forgotten that, even if you're into other forms of photography, rather get advice from people who actually use it on a professional level in those specific categories.

I moved from Canon (1DX III) to Fuji! Canon is no longer number one. Canon was crowned number one at a time when people thought that good photos are only made from full frame cameras.
I think the R5 ii is compelling, it's almost the same camera as the Z8, which is only a year old. Sure the Sony A1 is similar and 3 years old, but it's also another £2000 which is an insane difference that can't be understated. If you want a 45mp stacked sensor camera, you'd be much happier in the Canon or Nikon systems than Sony.
The r5 ii comparison to the z8 is exactly what I thought. A few new things but close comparison. Z8 is quite a bit less too and offers Nikon, 3rd party and even Sony lens use. If I was a new buyer I would surely consider it a better value
@troypast3589 Yep, defo agree, but realistically it costs a lot in both money and effort to change camera systems, so for people already invested in RF, it most likely makes more sense to buy the R5ii and it's good they now have a competitive option.
@@willherondale6367 I am thinking z8 for the wife and either the 400mm 4.5 or the 600mm 6.3. Perfect for wildlife/ bird and light. Budget is great as well. So even if you had a lot of rf glass, the telephotos from Nikon will still be cheaper with a camera for those longer ranges vs canon glass with faster apertures
@@troypast3589 I recommend the 600 f/6.3 over the 400 f/4.5 (and own both) for wildlife, especially birds. The 600 is a pleasure to use when on anything from the Z6 to the Z9, though it balances perfectly with the Z8. It works well with the 1.4X TC and has really great sharpness and contrast from corner to corner while weighting almost nothing. It feels like using a big prime and has the results to match, without breaking your back. You get a wee bit more to hold onto than the 400 f/4.5 (a better feeling grip), has a gold ring of bling, edges out the IQ, and it fits in many camera backpacks easily. The only thing I would criticise on both lenses is the lack of lens lungs for attaching a strap, though they are both light enough to just have attached to a body with a strap attached to that or if you use the PD system you can mount a attachment point to the tripod collar and have one attachment there and the other on your body.
Nikon bird AF bests the Sony A1, Canon R3, and Canon R5 on most subjects. But assuredly the R5 Mk2 and R1 will have an edge now. But your wife is unlikely to miss shots because of the AF. Steve Perry and others have excellent setup guides on setting up the Z8 for wildlife and birds. Usually this involves cycle AF and 3D tracking handoff buttons where you acquire the subject with an area AF mode then hold a fn button to switch to 3D tracking.
I'm currently watching the Olympic Games in Paris. After that, Canon is still way ahead. But talking about Canon always makes sense for influencers.

I'm loving my Nikon primarily because it takes all lenses via adapter. Megadap pro for E mount lenses, Meike for EF glass, and the nikon adapter for F mount.
Megadap is crazy good. Got a z8 and using my Sony lenses seems like native. Just wish they had one for my Canon R lenses =)
A lot of things i bought Sony for, but Third party lens support was the reason. I for instance LOVE my Sigma 35mm F1.2, it's image quality is unique, and for a prime it's very versatile. And price was it's was low enough, that i bought it, same thing from nikon/Canon i would not buy. I was also lucky on Sony 50mm F1.2 gm for 1500€, i bought before Sigma 50mm F1.2 came out, that one is amazing too.

@@troypast3589yeah I keep having to bring this up. The chart Tony showed was only for mirrorless sales. Sony came out with mirrorless cameras in 2011, canon came out with mirrorless cameras at the end of 2018. How is it Sony had a 7 almost 8 year head start to develop mirrorless technology and is in the number 2 spot for mirrorless camera sales behind canon that came out with mirrorless cameras 7 years after Sony. But Sony is leaving canon in the dust… right? Make it make sense please.
Cameras are expensive and glass even more so. Canon leveraged their late entry into mirrorless by allowing ef glass to be used on the new cameras. That was a huge advantage that allowed them to stay ahead now for years. On the flip side, Sony has been slow to create glass and even relied on 3rd parties to get lenses to market. Both of these have allowed Canon to stay in the game (and will for years) BUT they have quite simply been losing market share and will likely continue to do so. Why? Because they are not producing ground breaking sensors. Lead, follow, or get out of the way - Canon has chosen to follow. They will not lead market share indefinitely unless they lead.
Canon still have a good 50% market share (down from holding 80% for years), they still put Sony in with Others in their competition breakdown. It'll take a bit longer before a sleeping giant recognises a new player.

With that said, I’m curious… what could canon and other companies do to revolutionize the industry (I know one answer that is most likely going to come up is “Global Shutter” because that’s the buzz word for this year and the new megapixel war of photo tech, but Canon came out with global shutter in a commercial grade video camera back in 2016! Now to leverage that as a mute point, people have stated that it wasn’t a full frame sensor it was a super 35, or they’ll say things like it was “commercial grade” all those things are true, but you know what else is true, it didn’t serve a purpose. No different than the professional photographers not overly impressed with Sony’s a9 iii. No one is really raving about it and the global shutter. Just a bunch of CZcamsrs who are obviously endorsed by Sony (or wanting to be endorsed by Sony).
Here’s the truth behind all these cameras. There’s really NO other place for them to go other than adding certain features! The result of these companies adding certain features will be those who love that brand will talk about how amazing it is that the camera manufacturer they love came out with such great technology and bash every other brand (just like we’re seeing in this video and in the comments section) and 2. It’ll cause every other manufacturer to eventually follow suit. In the case of Sony, so many Sony fans are talking about how Sony is leading the industry. But once again, the canon R5 was revolutionary and caused Nikon and Sony to release a high megapixel flagship to compete with it because Canons semipro camera made their before products inadequate and irrelevant. Then you have the fact that Sony had a 7 year head start on canon in the mirrorless camera world and still is in second place for mirrorless cameras sold from a technology design that Sony created! There’s also the fact that Sony has NOT changed their LCD screens since 2013 on the back of their cameras and it’s the same interface and screen on all models and doesn’t allow you to even scrub through video modes when you’re playing back video. The screens are lackluster and lacking performance. The touch is terrible, pitch to zoom on all models is slow, and…
I did Canon the favor of waiting for three years to get their sh!t together and instead the shat all over me. Current R3 owner, waiting for the camera they should have built three years ago that still isn't even released yet. Incredible.
After using a7iii, a7R4, a9ii, a7s3, R3, R5, R8 and R6ii, Sony always has the best specs on paper, but I just like to hold Canon's cameras for my photography. I will definitely order a R5ii.
I had an A1 for a day and it could not hold a candle to my R3 or R5 autofocus. I also had an A7IV for two months and I could not rely on it at all. Also, Canon CPS just rocks. Reliable autofocus is too important to me. I'm sure the A9III has this, but it's also tiny in my hands compared to the R3. Canon, it just feels better, looks better and more reliable. Sony is way too green for me.

@@Roysphotos8 not really, does good ergonomics means better feeling? I do think Canon cameras have the best ergonomics. Some cameras like Fuji make you feel good to shoot, but not good at ergonomics. If you use Xh2s, gfx 100s, even the 100ii, and compare them to R3/R6ii, you will know what I mean. AF-on button from the 50sii/100s is just awful, 100ii is better but still far behind R3. In terms of image quality of stacked sensor on the market, I think Canon did a good job (R3 better than a9iii/a1/z9 in terms of dynamic range). So I assume R5ii is better also.

I have been a Canon user for decades ..... but last year I had to switch to Sony. I didn't want to switch, but when comparing what each manufacturer offers on a dollar for dollar "bang for the buck" basis, I just couldn't justify sticking with Canon anymore. And yes, Canon's policy on 3rd party lenses was a big part of this decision. I'm still using my Canon bodies and lenses, but moving forward, any new gear I buy will be Sony (or Nikon if they offer more value per dollar spent).

I'm surprised how down y'all are on the R5ii... I've got one on pre-order and I'm excited about it. I do think some of your criticisms are on point though... particularly around usability and workflow. Maybe more people would buy interchangeable lens cameras if they were as easy to use as a smartphone... if they had "find my " in case they got stolen... or even password protection. It should be trivially easy to upload files directly from the camera to Google or Flickr or wherever... that should be built in. I suspect Canon will sell plenty of R5ii's despite the price difference against the Z8 and they'll eventually end up around the same price anyways. Nikon had a couple of hits with the Z9 and Z8... the jury is still out on the Z6iii though. Random note... why is it the "8"s are great value? In addition to the Z8, the R8 is a great value proposition... has nothing to do with anything, just funny.
I do think the biggest challenge for all camera manufacturers is that the previous generation (particularly of Sony and Canon cameras) are really really good. The original R5 is by virtually every account an excellent camera... Sonys A1 is still competitive today (in features, if not in price). There's just not a lot of innovation left in the areas camera makers are focusing... As much as I'm sure I'll appreciate the improved autofocus in the R5ii over my R6, its a marginal change... the only real innovations in the last few years have been Sonys one consumer camera with a global shutter, and canons "some people love it, some people dont care" eye tracking... everything else is incremental.
Aren't cameras far easier to use than phones???? When I take photos with phones, the subjects get away before I make all the adjustments.. That's if I don't drop my phone while making shooting adjustments. I guess this argument can turn into "manual stick drive" vs. "automatic" in car industry.
@@TheTensecondz on my iphone I can take a photo, edit it for color, crop/rotate it, and send it to someone (email, SMS) all within a minute or two if I just want to send something off in a hurry. I love my full frame camera, but the phone is much easier to work with. Tony's constantly talking about computational photography... try taking a phone at night with a modern smartphone, it turns out pretty good even in mediocre conditions! That doesnt even get into gps, security, and other features....

I love my Canon R3. Probably the best camera to get for Canon shooters who want the flaship for sports but dont want the extra expense of a flagship.
I tried to switch to Sony when the A73 came out. But I found my Canon 5D3 colours and the Raw files were still easier to work with than sony and i was working through over a dozen jobs and more and more the Sony files took longer to get the colours I wanted from them. So I went back to Canon.
Not saying that Canon is better in every way, but my needs were a colour science that was consistent across the line and a set of standard lenses that are pretty much unmatched... For MY needs.

That’s awesome. Sony has corrected the issues with color in the A7IV and A7RV but in the A1 it was still an issue. Most people that have never used anything other than Sony will laugh because they don’t know what you’re talking about. But I do so thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.

@@hawaiifreespeechnews the R3 doesn't overheat when shooting 4k or 6k. It only overheats when using 120p in 4k, and after about 8mins. That's 32 mins of footage on a 60p timeline. I don't think anyone reasonable is shooting 8 mins of continuous slow motion.
This is what happens when they spent 15 years artificially crippling their cameras. These releases are the only time they haven't done that, but it's too late. They already have the reputation for compromising.
The only relevant CZcamsr, who was enthusiastic about what Canon has launched was Jared, all others were disappointed like you or the 2 brilliant guys from PETA PIXEL. I’ve called Jared a ‘Canon Fan Boy’, which he didn’t like. But I think that’s true, he is a fan boy.
Apparently, the eye-controlled AF is quite good, but Jared didn't have the camera long enough to test how well the eye-controlled AF stayed calibrated. He just had it one day.
@@careylymanjones I think it was the special AF feature for some selected balls ports (soccer, basketball and baseball I guess), which he liked especially. But all the rest is more or less a R3.
Recently i had to choose between Canon R7 and Sony a6700, and i bought the sony because of third party lenses. Something simple as a 35mm or 50mm for Canon isn't available where i live.

I agree completely with what you said. Remember when Sony bought Minolta and they said they were going to be Number 1 in camera sales and everybody laughed. They are getting pretty close. If Canon has another down year and Sony has another up year, it could happen a year from now.
Canon's recent release activity indicates, that next year will become a down year for Canon.
Whereas Sony is due to update important camera lines in 2025, including their important pro & enthusiast cash cow, their three years old A7 IV.
Nikon had failed expectations and opportunities with their Z6 III unexpectedly miserably, so it is expectable, that by the end of 2025, Nikon will have fallen below the 10% market share threshold (from their current 13%).

Canon's overarching marketing strategy has been to manipulate and control their customers. This is evidenced by their intentional crippling of gear because they are hyper-afraid of cannibalization, and also by their off-putting policy on 3rd party lenses. If they were nice and easygoing about things like this, I could deal with their technology being behind Sony and Nikon. But when they are manipulative and controlling, and then their tech lags a full generation behind, and they still charge top dollar for everything, that is just too many negative things to endure any longer.
Canon need to continue the M series with some better lenses and the 32mp. improved sensor. EVF is a must. The M6mk2 was a great camera except for the missing EVF. Some of my pics are equally as good as R6mk2 and my old 30mp R. Make it at a good price.
Tony & Chelsea, this discussion makes me think about making a change from Canon to Sony due to Sony's relationship efforts, third party lens acceptance, and attention to suggestions of the general public or knowledgeable influencers. It seems like Canon is a bit arrogant and insensative to current and potential customers.

My hands are getting bad, so I started using the old 17-40 f/4 cause it's lite and works (R5). Am finding this one lens does 90% of my shooting. For more reach, I just enable crop for video and photo's just crop in post. This was a $500 lens new from B&H.
Is there an impact to Canon's bottom line when they can't seem to manufacture what they design? It takes many months for their products to become readily available in stores for purchase (e.g. the RF 200-800 which started shipping last Nov still isn't readily available, and BTW I refuse to preorder something -- not my idea of customer service and customer retention). 18:19 this is literally why everyone on CZcams and rumors sites are hating the R1, yet canons doing what the other brands are doing and people seem to have an issue with it. It’s like talking out of both sides of your mouth about what you want and what you’re tired of seeing which ironically are the same things.
I'm a Sony guy but Canon has it's uses. I think if your business is about capturing people in a flattering way, Canon color science is excellent. I also feel Canon lags behind the competition because of their reliability requirements. Sony is the reason we all now look for overheating tests. Sony has always invented things ahead of the curve and that's why I like them, but it takes a few updates for them to have all the features they're capable of and Sony's always have some quirks here and there. It's not crippling to where you NEED a reliable camera, but if I'm trying to sell a consistent product, like headshots or newborn photos. I'd still say Canon's better reliability really speaks volumes. That said I'm finding it hard to want an R1 when the A9III is available. I find it hard to justify the C400 because the FX6 is cheaper and while older, I have the lenses already. I find it hard to want an R6ii when Nikon has been showing off this year. I also find it hard to want Canon, Nikon or Sony because Fuji has an element of fun, makes medium format and Panasonic is similar to Canon's reliability but has the best Micro four thirds option for video. The GH7 is the pinnacle of camcorder technology but dressed as a mirrorless. So I think we've reached a point where all these brands need to pick a direction where they'll land in a few years or fight really hard for market share.
Color science is a myth
People seem to accuse you guys of having a bias. However, I think you guys have been in the industry for so long that you obviously have your favorite of the moment. No doubt Canon, Nikon have all enjoyed the kind of zeal you have at the moment maybe more so for Sony, but that there is still a place in your hearts for your previous fondness for Nikon or perhaps Canon. I think it's cool how you can juggle your history and predilections in assessing the camera industry and the models offered by the leading manufacturers at any given time. Keep up the great work.
I feel the 3rd party lens stance was a bigger issue then they realised it would be, because as you stated their glass is pricey. and if you market to the little man (thru advertising like with Andre Agasse) you need to keep them as much if not more then the “news” people who can afford the top end models.
Innovation comes but improving on flaws and listening to their customer base i think will help them as well.

I'm dating the bodies and marrying the lenses. Canon was never #1 on the lens front. If you put me in a room with that new R1 and a subject, I'm going to get the same results on my Nikon D4 and the 85mm g 1.4 (argueably better results).. same with my Canon 1DX Mk II and the Ef f/1.8 ... why would i ever buy either of these 2 cameras? Outside the room...We shot birds and animals back in the day too and made crazy good photos.. yeah these new fancy autofocus bodies make it "easier" but it doesnt make you better photographer. The less you have to think and work the less you learn. I dont want the camera doing everything for me. I can have the best camera ever made, but the guy next to me thats just plain better than me is going to smoke me in taking photos with older gear. My Nikon Z8 definitely doesnt make me a better photographer 100% , literally the same thing with these 2 cameras.
The thing is that it makes you better. It gives you more options. It won't make up for the lack of skill but you'll have better images with the z8 than if you had a worse body.
I have a theory why Canon aren’t doing as great as they should be. Bear with me. But I believe part of this is down to Canon imposing the side hinged rear screen on us. Every single camera they produce has this screen, it’s as if they’ve a secret contract where they can only use this screen. If they gave us a choice then I think they’d sell more cameras.
Yes, lots of people like the side hinged screen, that’s fine but there’s a silent majority that hate using this screen, photojournalists, documentary and wedding photographers I know much prefer the tilt screen, as they kinda don’t need to film themselves or take selfies. I know personally of 4 photographers that will not use Canon in a professional environment just because of the rear screen implementation. And when I speak to videographers if they’re not using an external monitor they prefer the tilt ahead of the side hinged for filming.
So that’s my take, if you disagree that’s fine but I believe it plays some part in Canon’s falling sales.
You say you're excited to see what Canon will do next. But what time frame are we talking about? It took them all this time to come up with the r1. By the time Canon comes up with something similar to the a93, Sony will have moved on to something even better. We may be talking late 2026 early 2027.
And Nikon will have moved beyond the initial z9 and Z8.
Sony is moving as slow as Canon these days with updating their camera bodies, and that's made even worse by the fact that Sony is terrible at updating their firmware with new features. Despite their poor market share, I think Nikon is going to be the one to watch in the next few years. They've got a fantastic range of really high quality lenses and reasonable costs for the quality unlike Canon. And their autofocus is now catching up with Sony, and their cameras have better video features than Sony now.
However, Sony has the deep pockets to speed up their innovation again if they ever decide they actually have to put effort in again.

Sony has been slow since Canon has been in hiding and Nikon is at Sony’s mercy for sensors…. Likely Sony has dozens of cameras in the labs and was just waiting to release until they had too. One of the reasons it is is frustrating Canon has not responded sooner is the fact that competition has slowed dramatically. I am sure we will see many new Sony products now that Canon has fired their shot. The R1 set a low bar for Sony to respond, which is why so many are frustrated.

All it takes is a new iPhone to halt all other production, very much the same struggle AMD has with TSMC when Apple want all the 2nm process node. Sony's semiconductor business doesn't get to play favourites between Sony's imaging division and Nikon, especially not when their equipment to produce sensors comes from Nikon and Nikon want their sensor design fabricated to spec, on budget, and to their deadline. People suggesting Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group plays favourites to Sony Imagine Division is daft at best. If not for Nikon, Apple, and other big partners, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group wouldn't have the investment to put it so far ahead. With Nikon they get to have 20% of the full frame sensors, otherwise they would be fighting Canon with 10%. Canon is huge, they had 80% of the market for over a decade.

Wow, this discussion is just like the discussion in most vlogs about OM-1 when it came. Everybody said Olympus/OM System was nothing new and not any kind of development from previous cameras.
I have noticed Canon sensors are "little lacking". And I now hear diskussions about many brands, that megapixel race are stopping and brands slowly go back to 25 mp.
I think that Canon will have a weak time, but come back in a few years as a really strong manufacturer.
And Nikon will take market share from both Canon and Sony so they all end up equally big. And I think that the "other brands" market share will increase.
Reason, size of sensor and mp is big the issue any more. It's usability, durability, weight, design and friendliness that people value more and more nowadays. Both Panasonic and OM System will grow again if they go back into the consumer market as they used to be so good in.

I have to tell you - I love the regular R7... I've gotten amazing photos with it. However, I have occasionally noticed rolling shutter so eliminate that, and I'm golden. I'd buy it in a second no matter the price. I have an R5 also but I seem to always reach for the R7 for my wildlife shots ..

I was waiting for the R5 mark2 and ended up buying a R6 mark2 instead. Wasn’t willing to pay $4300 for basically nothing better. And skipped the R5 because all the reviews said low light was better on the R6 mark2. Let alone the autofocus. Those were the two most important things for me. Got it with the 24-105 F4 for $2999. Couldn’t be happier. And saved a ton.
Nice! I think with so many reviews and modern camera tech being so good, GAS is certainly a thing. Upgraded from an RP that got me back into photography after getting an M50 as a webcam and getting the itch. I upgraded to a 1st Gen R6 2.5 years ago and find it to be an amazing camera. Hoping to add an R5 soon and finally jump in. Maybe a Mark ii if Amazon gets one of their killer 12 month 0% interest programs going again...
The R6 ii is a great camera. Lowlight isn’t better than the R5 just different. CZcamsrs and others explain this poorly. It’s the megapixel count and the lenses you’re using, in addition to the exposure triangle. They really need to learn how to explain this better.

What did you have before you got the R62 that you would say the R52 or R1 was “nothing better “?
I am not sure what reviews you looked at but with all other things being equal, when you downscale 45mp image down to 24mp then it will have the same high-iso noise performance as a native 24mp sensor would produce, due to capturing the same amount of total light. But with decent lenses the 45mp sensor image will be sharper. And the R5 Mii has a BSI sensor as well, so that will perform better in low-light (so I am not sure where you got the idea that it was nothing better). And although the R5 M1 has an older sensor than the R6 mii, it actually performs better as well, watch this video (ideally in 4K) from the 2.30 mark that compares images side by side at different isos: watch?v=qStdJDmkNcc
The R5Mii also has higher res back LCD, viewfinder, comes with a top lcd screen and the sensor is stacked. Sorry but you got what you paid for, which is still a good camera but not as good as the R5 Mii.
I agree with you Tony. If you already have R5 there are not any big reasons to upgrade to R5 mk2. If you need to stop action you can always rely on mechanical shutter 12fps and even with electronic 20fps is not THAT bad. Even with my old Sony A7III I could stop 2 fast running and flying dogs at once only with 10fps. For the most people who shoots portraits, landscape, etc there is no really good reason at all to upgrade, same pixel amount and with portraits you don't need super fast readout speed or sticky eye AF. For sports it might be useful but still R5 is amazing camera even for that. There are proof out there with current pictures that it works pretty good. I have to say I'm a bit bored with camera industry at the moment. They should invent more better and cheaper lenses instead of selling "speed and 8k" which are pretty lame to be honest.
I think you said it when you were talking about how people view content. They view them on tiny screens, so gone are the days of needing higher megapixels.
Voice control. Say it once, say it twice, say it three times. Saying "ISO 800" and having the camera set ISO to 800 -- nothing is faster or easier!
With 3 control dials you can set one for ISO and it's extremely fast: faster than saying ISO 800. Personally I have my R6ii set up with the front dial for shutter, rear dial for aperture and the 3rd dial for exposure compensation using auto ISO
The length of time to release these units, the really incremental rather than innovative improvements, the really odd launch dates (missing that prime Olympic window), the really crappy launch events and the simultaneous layoffs at Canon USA, including Rudy Winston - one of their prime spokespeople - all point to some type of internal turmoil for me. But there's one other thing - I'm a Canon shooter, with an R5. I honestly have no use for the upgrades in these new cameras - my tech saturation limit has been reached. I think more and more hobbyists will decide that is the case for them as well. Manufacturers have to find a new angle other than new sensors, faster FPS and more megapixels.
I think canon r1 is great the way it is. It’s going by what pro journalists needs a reliable must get the pic camera, no matter how dark or rough the condition is. The autofocus is extremely good perhaps the top camera right now. It is built to get the shot.
IMO, the decision as to what body you use is dependent on what you shoot. Personally, I think more about the glass than the camera body. I upgraded to the R5MII because of the stacked images and the rolling shutter fix. Selling my R5 lessened the MII's price tag a bit. I still am offset by Canon's production issues with new equipment and the "back-ordered / wait list" process. I removed myself from the 200-800mm waitlist. I'll see if Canon opens their RF fit to more 3rd party lenses. If not soon, I have considered Sony... more times than not.
why cameras don't use internal storage?! I don't want 1TB but at least 250GB. If an Iphone can hold that with a fraction of space why on earth any camera manufacturer won't skip the cards or at least use an in between drive so buffer don't break the flow of taking pictures
I agree. Many other developments (across all brands) are nice but not really adding user-value. Internal memory would be a real user-centric feature that would, I think anyway, be valued by many buyers.

It’s not just the cost of putting an SSD in there, but because of the cameras capabilities, they’d have to re-wire the entire structure of the camera for heating and ergonomics. For example the Canon R5 mark ii and R1 would be significantly larger if those cameras had internal SSD. And in the case of the R5 there would need to be a complete remap of venting and insulation because that camera shoots raw 8k (kind of like how much larger the Nikon Z8 is compared to the R5, but if the R5 mark ii had internal storage it would need to be even larger than the Z8 with more venting capabilities.

Let’s say something happens, there’s the cost of shipping the product back to Canon, and since most SSD’s are now soldered onto the motherboards it would mean that the company would have to replace the entire motherboard which is an added expense for everyone involved and would take more time. Theses cameras are not hasselblads. And while I agree with you both and would love to have internal SSD’s that have a functional use, I understand why the big 3 (Sony, Nikon and Canon) don’t do it.
Mike, Hasselblad, DJI and Leica cameras use internal storage. There's no technical reason it can't work. if anything it would give them more flexibility in the design, because they could place the storage anywhere rather than in the camera grip where it can be externally accessible.
@@TonyAndChelsea I hear you! But if they have a camera grip with storage that’s external storage. And as far as the other brands you mentioned, you are 100 percent correct. But my assessment is the same. Those are specific specialty cameras. Canon, Nikon and Sony are focused on all around cameras that do everything. I would be concerned with them places full frames 8k video recording capabilities directly towards internal storage. It would need to be so compressed and watered down. When working with full scale production video cameras, they don’t even have internal storage at 4k and those are over 10 times the size of mirrorless cameras. So I’m not sure the heating structure would work for mirrorless cameras that do everything. But those specialized cameras that you mentioned I think it’s fine for them because they have 1 specific focus.

In Japan, the pride of building technology is hardware, not software. And all issues that you mentioned are software issues. So unfortunately I'm afraid that Japanese brands will slowly fade out, unless they address their software problem.
I've been watching R1 and R5 Mark II previews from all the people who Canon flew to Phoenix. Some other people received one or both of the cameras by mail or by special Canon courier. At B&H, the R5-2 has already cracked "TOP SELLER" status -- even though nobody expects it to start shipping before August 20. And now CZcams is loaded with reviews done by people who haven't touched either of the cameras. Sorry you didn't get a trip to Phoenix. But when you've actually touched one of these cameras, maybe you'll do another....different....review.
well said! I got to shoot with the r5ii last Saturday with the local canon rep and i instantly new it was better then my z8
A "native" Canon EF shooter with some Canon M and RF (R6m2) and Fuji (xt5 with Fuji top zooms, not primes); I have put up 3 versions (5dm4 with 24-70 m2, R6m2 with 24-70 m2 with canon adapter and Fuji xt5 with 16-55 2.8 R LM WR) of the same scene, with similar/same editing and asked several people to choose which one they found best and why. The ALL have chosen the 5dm4 version due to the overall feel/colour of the pics. The newer bodies are geared towards those much fewer of photographers who need faster AF fx (the reason I bought the R6m2 was the AF in birding) but for the most of us we don´t need the faster AF. Landscapses do not move very fast these days, people usually do not move very fast either.
I think Canon loses on other fronts as well. Their budget primes are a much worse offering compared to others. More and more people look elsewhere for good reasons.

Yeah they probably with them saying that was that the R5 came out and Nikon and Sony didn’t have an answer for it. Then the Nikon Z9 and Sony A1 came out and cost at least $1500 more for a stacked sensor being the only real difference. These are all opinion videos but they are misleading. The only issue Nikon has had in mirrorless was AF. The truth is that Nikons mirrorless AF is still better that 8/10 DSLR’s. So this doesn’t hold weight. Nikon and canon are fine.

@@troypast3589😂 so ummm… do we need to have a therapy session. The 8k recording overheating has been a thing of the past. Only Sony people keep bringing it up. Oh and the 8k in Sony is dialed back a lot (due to compression) just like their raw photos are compressed. 2 type A cards have slower read out speeds and bottle neck the buffer when shooting at 30 frames per second. So when you clap back and talk about all the features make sure you’re not talking to someone who owned both cameras. Just because you’re upset that you don’t like my assessment of the cameras doesn’t mean you can go off of stats that you downloaded from the website to give your vague impression of the tech. Oh and also, it’s possible to over heat the A1 shooting 8k. It’s around the 50 minute mark depending on conditions (but you have to switch cards because they get full quick) Just like you can get to 50 minutes shooting 8k on the Canon R5 without it over heating once again by switching cards and stopping the video it allows it to cool down. Not to mention you have the option of just blowing a regular fan on it that you can get on Amazon for under $10. There are options and work arounds for everything that goes beyond a stat sheet. Go try using all the cameras I mentioned above without a bias view and you’ll see that there’s really NO difference between them. No one cares in a professional setting. It’s CZcams people and fanboys that care about the stats of flagship cameras and get excited over gear they’ll never use (or companies the CZcamsrs are obviously endorsed by) that get excited over the gear.
@@tonygerassi1502yeah because honestly how often do CFExpress cards fail? SD cards fail especially the cheaper ones. But both CFExpress cards type A and B rarely fail. It’s a different level of card and professionals know that amateurs don’t! This is something that CZcamsrs push because they are stuck in the old SD card failures when they bought cheap cards they were shooting on or didn’t format the cards after every shoot or switching cameras. The card failure is more of an SD card issue (and yeah I know I’m going to have someone respond with a lie about the times their, or someone else’s, CF card failed or something. This is the internet and I expect someone’s going to lie just to NOT be wrong 😂).

I haven't read all of the comments but, the 1 series canon cameras have always been lower megapixels than the 5 series cameras. What Canon has always done, was simply repeated. It seems to me that camera buyers have tried to push Canon into changing its direction to please millions of different people. I'm here to say that it's almost impossible to get me and you to agree.

Canon is like Apple… Apple cannot seem to release a jaw dropping phone with amazing high resolution photos and video. Year after year Apple release phones with disappointing cameras compared to competitors and they overheat and the screen cannot be seen until they cool down! Canon should be blowing away their competitors…
Apple wants to be like Apple but they act like Microsoft. Where are their market disrupting products? None since the 5d mk ii in 2008…. Instead we get scores of redundant products based on the same sensor over and over. The new “features” are things we have already seen in other products for years. As for Apple not producing a jaw dropping phone, no IDEA what that means. iPhones have out performed Androids for years and are generally a generation or two ahead in overall performance. iPhones are the main reason Canon has been losing profits and the ability to spend on R&d in the first place (which has been declining year after year for sometime now ). Sony at least saw that future and produced camera sensors for scores of phone manufacturers- including Apple. Perhaps Canon is fearful of camera sales as a whole and is shifting their bets elsewhere. I hope Canon will innovate and bring better products to market, but I am no longer convinced they will or even want to.
@@troypast3589 The phone part of Apple I like. But the camera they have on their phone is not an industry leader. They also have had a serious overheating issue for years now. You cannot use their phone for navigation or photos in hot weather as the screen eventually darkens to the point you cannot see it until it cools. They claim that’s by design… I literally have to have a vent in the car pointing to the rear to keep it cool while driving. The true resolution of their cameras are hyped and they play with marketing terms to try and convince us it’s a great camera. It’s ok… good… but not great. However, I still use an Apple phone…

It didn’t include DSLR’s so the numbers look skewed. It’s no secret that Tony love Sony cameras and that’s fine. He goes out of his way to produce bias content and that’s fine but at least own it and say that you’re partial to a camera company! Jared jokes about the canon money truck but we all know his bias in favor canon. Tony acts like he’s NOT bias to Sony and he just does this content for everyday photographers while doing “competitive” shoot out with cameras that cost more and have lower megapixels then saying it has less of a noise issue. He posts a chart that is only talking about mirrorless cameras and passes it off as the overall camera market when Sonys had an 8 year head start and still is in second place for mirrorless cameras then acts like Sonys catching up to canon. It’s very misleading.

I don't know how the eye focus functions, but I'd use it IF I had an activate button that I could hold-down-press, look at a part of the frame with a subject I want, it could lock in on the face and then follow that face and I let go of the button to stop following my eye so I can look around the rest of the scene for composition. EYE can see it being useful, but I'm guessing it doesn't function this way (yet). If I'm wrong please LMK. Either way I'm waiting for the R1x/R1s that's rumored.
Canon's refusal to really open their system to third-party lenses, in a market where a credible competitor does open its system, is damning. Back in the day, when Canon had no real competition, they could get away with crap like that. Not anymore. I can buy a capable Sony body and Sigma lenses for lots less money than a comparable Canon body and Canon glass.
Canon relies on their lenses for profit. Chinese lenses are about to devour lens market share. Canon is simply not ready as they do not have the sensor market like Sony does.

I was interested in getting back into photography but my god the prices have gone bananas. It has been expensive but now the business is sort of trying to destory itself. First the familys were lost. Now the amateurs and beginnes are being put off by the prices. Even me as an old enthusiast are having second thoughts.
Canon has been innovating on the lens side of things more than the bodies. Their lead engineers even said the other day that they have some amazing lens that no one has seen before coming. The 24-105 f2.8, 100-300 f2.8, 10-20 f4 were all really cool and unique lenses. Not to mention the 28-70 f2 that’s rumored for a version two possibly coming soon. The big three all produce amazing images and all three are approaching the game differently. Canon just seems to be taking the lens route.
The 24-50 2.8 is small and nice , the 20-70 f4 is light and wide , the 35-150 2-2.8 is a tank that doesnt break the bank. The 17-50 f4 is nice and versatile. The sirui's 1.2 are 300 bucks each from 16mm all the way to 75 . The upcoming 24-70 f2 also is lighter and wider.
It lacks the 10-20 but the 12-24 is a stop faster and the 10mm laowa 2.8 has barely any severy optical problems
Plenty of innovation on the medium range stuff with cheap f1.4 and f1.8 lenses instead of top of the line f1.2 release that few might buy and even fewer new user would be interested in
The viltrox 1.2 triplets are also gm level for under 500$

The lenses, the color science are the variables that count the most . Canon is blowing the competition out of the water. Nikon cannot innovate to the same degree because of their primitive mount not designed from the ground up and Sony ergonomics and menu systems truly suck . Eye focus far superior for sports photography. Nobody else comes close.

Back in March I decided to buy the R5 when it hit $4000 CAD, down from $5300 CAD (launch price) . My concern at thy time was period firmware updates using subscription based model for AI auto focus and other presumed improvements. I want going to pay an annual fee to use a full frame expensive camera. I'm glad I got the R5, it's a big step up from my EOS R. So now I have a 30MP backup camera and the R5 as my main camera.
Nikon needed to catch up, since they are falling to #3 and still losing customer, so they were motivated to compete. Canon sits at #1, and is complacent.
I watched many of your videos lately and was close to ordering the R5II but then you got me considering Sony .. But I ended up buying the original R5 as it's at a great price now and a older 85mm 1.4 IS EF mount and a adapter. So the total price was way way less then the new options would have been and for what I do it's still super great. Then I will wait some years and see what Canon comes out with next time, if it has enough propper new features that I want to upgrade.
Bodies are only so much. SONY catching up with lenses is their best bet to beat Canon. 300mm f/2.8 is a great new lens - Canon has nothing even close (for size and weight). That one lens is having me reconsider Canon.
Sony is way ahead in lenses tho
I think the biggest tell that Canon is falling off the top is that my local camera store has shifted its rental catalogue from mostly Canon to an almost majority of Sony rentals. You also see more people renting Sony gear more often in the lineup of pro's grabbing items for weddings/projects.
When I went in to rent an R5 for trial purposes, they also recommended some Sony/Nikon items to try. Normally, I hear the advice "don't switch brands, just wait until your brand releases an equivalent for whatever work you're trying to do". That advice is still touted... but with an addendum of "but not always".
I see these very reasonable folks suggesting alternatives to Canon as a "possible option". The door has opened from "stay with Canon" to "well... Canon ain't always on the ball, and Nikon/Sony are also pretty great".
I would also like to point out that the Canon AF still seems to have a bit of an edge over Sony/Nikon for stills. Sony appears to have better AF for video. Nikon has surprised me with the best wildlife AF. This still leaves the majority of AF stills wins for Canon (people, sports), but since video is so prevalent today, Sony having better video AF really stings as a Canon user.
I think this further highlights the very serious competition Canon faces today, they used to be top dog in all these categories, now they're trading blows instead of dominating. That's a big mis-step.
Did you guys test these cameras ?? How do you know they can't out preform what's out there?

I've been a Canon fan going back to the film days. Canon and Nikon get you the most true to life image out of camera with less post processing. Not to mention Canon usually has an easier to learn menu system.
However when Canon went mirrorless, they changed the lens system, twice. Then they don't have very many options for the new systems. They didn't allow 3rd party to make M mount till they abandoned it for R. Yes you can make EF work, with an adapter but they add more physical length and weight to the lens body package and in some instances a lower quality image. Often the same EF lens on a DSLR looks better, than when adapted for R. They should have stuck with EF or made a native dual mount system. They have been able to put EFS and EF on APSC for a while, this shouldn't be any harder.
After that I started looking elsewhere and landed on Sony. While in most cases the equivalent camera has a little lesser quality image before post, you get more features for a better price point. It's just a no brainer at this point.
Fujii, Panasonic, and OM have had some decent cameras along the way but no consistency between product lines. Most of thier other models are awful and make it hard to consider them when thinking forward.
The thing that has me concerned about Sony recently is, many of thier successor models in the same line have been a step backwards. Often more expensive on top of that. If they continue this trend, I'm not sure where I'll go.
Canon is a nonstarter until they open the lens mount.

Never liked Canon cameras. Still have my Nikons and Sony DSLR's. Use my Nikon equipment for Astro and Sony equipment for landscape.
the rf 24-105 is DAMN soft and useless for group photos. the range of RF FF lenses is terrible and the R6ii's AF and noise @ iso 6400 is just bad. I'd move to sony, only I have a tonne of Canon stuff and the move would be just too costly

I bought a lens system (Canon) in the 1980s - and that collection of lens mount is what keeps me on Canon... good or bad, but its very expensive to switch lens mount types

Canon is a legacy line that is slow and steady with consistency. As long as they have no upcoming duds they will compete on all levels. Their lenses are great but overpriced. Remember "Sony Style" back then, they were into everything, too much too fast and was flooding the market with products called a lifestyle, sacrificing quality IMO.
Doesn't the R1 have the fastest sensor that isn't global? The bigger question is did they take proper advantage of that sensor speed.
I'm not sure I understand why you talk about how far behind Canon is because the R1 only has 24 megapixels at the begining of the podcast and at the end you talk about how for the most part nobody needs that many megapixels for how images are viewed now. Actual sports photographers I watch are thrilled with the new R1. I'm still using the 5D MIII and it's fantastic for my needs. As long as Canon provides what works for their users I think they'll be okay.
