  • In 1999, the Supreme Court ruled the unjustified institutionalization of people with disabilities constitutes discrimination. But in recent years, a number of lawsuits across the country have exposed problems of unnecessary institutionalization in several states. CBS Reports goes to Illinois, which has one of the highest rates of institutionalization in the country, to understand the challenges families face keeping their developmentally disabled loved ones at home. I feel very lucky to be able to have habilitation workers so I can live on my own. I'm HSN (level 3) autistic, and narrowly avoided my ex forcing me into longterm psychiatric commitment when I tried to leave her. Once I got away from her I was able to get home carers, which she never let me have before. I've never been happier, I hope all level 3 autistic adults aquire this much autonomy eventually. ❤

    My Puerto Rican grandmother built a small apartment behind her home, so her intellectually disabled brother could have autonomy while still receiving her support.
    He worked at the nearby corner pizzeria selling lottery tickets.
    It gave them BOTH the freedom to live their lives fully.

    All the money USA send around the world helping others why can't more be spent helping our own. Please help me understand.

      Because when people like Trump point that out and try to cut funding for other countries that don't care about us, he and the people who agree with him (including you) are called a racist, and then Democrats vote for even more money to be sent to Russia and China. Most conservatives strongly agree with what you said, and most conservatives are called bigots for saying what you said, because there's this very bigoted assumption that a defense of capitalism means you hate all elements of a socialistic society. Christian fundamentalist conservatives have been giving poor people stuff for free in Western countries for hundreds of years. Donating to the less fortunate is literally a fundamental of many religions, yet people sympathetic to socialism are the most likely to get offended by religious people existing. So progressive, lol.

      Illinois has a huge disability industrial complex... 7 state instituions, dozens of private institutions under the same rules; costing up to $360,000 per person per year. These institutions are notorious for abuse, neglect, and cronyism as reported widely by Prop Publica. Illinois pays disabled people pennies on the dollar in sheltered workshops which violates their civil rights; while their CEOs make 6 figure salaries at times; There is money, Illinois politicians haven't gotten the will or political leadership to reallocate and re-invest in community.

    I appreciate you doing a story on this. I have an 18 year old daughter with a genetic deletion and epilepsy. She is verbal, very socially aware but has a learning delay. She will need some assistance and it is very scary to think about. Maybe when this country sees the value of caregiving we will get somewhere.

    I have worked with developmentally disabled adults for 30 plus years. To me, the important thing is not the environment itself but the adequacy of funding and the quality and the quality and quality of the staff.

    I’m from downers grove! My daughter is special needs and I’m going to keep her home as long as I can and then when she becomes an adult, I hope for her to be able to go to a group home. I will not let her go to an institution, group homes are great and they need to start, creating more group homes to get these people out of institutions. I fear every day as a lot of special needs parents do ,what happens to my child when I am no longer here. Who will take care of my child. It’s a very helpless feeling.

    I am a developmentally disabled senior adult. My observation is a significant issue is Ableism. People don’t realize they’re abelists most of the time. Family can be among the worst (but not always).

    LPN’s could be taught to do the same as the RN’s.

    • @GSUlib
      @GSUlib Před 2 měsíci

      State regulations and nurse practice act make it difficult for nursing delegation; the RN's license is on the line if tasks are delegated and something goes wrong. Other states have figured out how to close all state and private institutions and take care of people in the community Illinois can too if there is political will and leadership.
