Summer Project - Make an INSANELY LOUD Bluetooth Amplifier!

  • In this video we'll be making a wireless bluetooth-enabled amplifier so that we can put old bookshelf speakers to good use!
    Not only is the sound quality fantastic, but it can also go super loud! It's also quite easy to build, and doesn't require any special tools - you can get away with just a hammer, nail, and a screwdriver if needed. Seriously!
    Happy building!
    Oh, by the way, here's the note about the little switches:
    These switches change the gain mode of the amp. If they're both on, the amp can reach insane(er) volume levels. However, to hit these volume levels without distortion, the amp needs 25v, which is more than our batteries can provide. The amp is loud enough with them off, and it also means that the signal to noise ratio is MUCH improved, so I don't really recommend messing with them.

    Some peeps have suggested that the live tests have been faked because (I presume) it sounds so 'clean'. This isn't the case - it really IS all live audio. There are two reasons it sounds so 'clean', the first being that the recordings were done outside, where there is minimal echo. This is particularly noticeable in the field test, which is to be expected as it's a field - there really is nothing for the sound to bounce off.
    The second reason it's so clean is that all the live audio was captured with TWO Rode NT1-A studio mics in an ORTF stereo config (carried by someone off camera). This config was chosen because I needed the high SPL capability to avoid distortion. These mics are also cardioid mics, which means they reject off-axis sounds (like echos) which also contributed to the 'clean' sound.
    Hope this helps to clarify things! :)

    • @antibodyarmy
      @antibodyarmy Před 9 lety +18

      +hyperman717 As far as i am aware electronics don't mind what amps come out of the adapter, its more the voltage. The specs say this amp can do 8-24v and the device will use the amps it needs, so long as you don't plug it to a 120v 15a wall outlet and stay within 8-24v dc you will be fine lol. Just find a 8-24v ac to dc power supply you got lying around, should power it assuming it has enough of a max amperage output. but if your dc power supply doesn't have sufficient amps it might not power on, or it wont preform optimally. examples of some ac to dc power supply's are, old laptop power adapters, phone charger bricks, the xbox360/one power brick. if you want to find out its output look on the sticker you should see something like this.
      AC in 160v-240v ~ 50/60hz
      DC OUT 5v === 500mA

Having watched his portable mic build before this I know he has the audio gear to record at a level that is going to be higher quality then what most peoples headsets and or speakers can reproduce, an added bonus to my claim is I have recreated this genius device and tested it, and it really does work. I built this the year this video came out. As a direct response to the popularity of this video, chinese ebayers started making custom boxes that came with the Amp made out of Acrylic and an all in one 10 battery tray. This meant all you had to buy besides that one purchase was some velcro strips to adhere it to the speakers. All in all it cost be about £25, including the 10 rechargeable Amazon basic's batteries. I could play music at a very decent volume for 7hrs or so off of one charge. I've used it for many BBQ's, what a great build this is.

    With no heatsink attached, I highly doubt that amplifier chip is actually rated at 50 watts RMS per channel... maybe 50 watts maximum (peak) for both channels combined, which would probably come out to about 10 to 15 watts RMS per channel. However, with efficient speakers, that's still plenty of power for it to get very loud!

      +Vishalkrishna Tr A 10% Total Harmonic Distortion is terrible for any Hi Fidelity (or even mainstream) audio experience, considering that even 1% is too much to begin with; but I guess that for a backyard party DIY project for the non-electronic engineers or hobbyists this might do.

    • @NGC1433
      @NGC1433 Před 9 lety +7

      Just look up D-amps or T-amps. They are freakin efficient. 96+% sort of efficient. No trouble putting out these wattages. To filter it to acceptable THD levels is quite a challenge tough. But not unsurmountable. T-amps are a proof.

      +NGC1433 Up to 10W THD below 0.1% and only goes over 0.25 after 20W where it rises sharply. These modern chips are magic. They were not cheating with specs at all.

      @RuiRex Před 9 lety +4

      vwestlife Also thought that so went and checked it out. The seller says 50W+50W but it's the little P on the end that makes the difference. The TDA7492 has 50+50 RMS but this one is 25+25 RMS. Yes, it's at 10% specs but the 20W @ 0,25% is more than enought to get a pretty loud sound for a small party :) My doubt is the battery life. Dont think they would last for long at full power...

    • @ABaumstumpf
      @ABaumstumpf Před 9 lety +4

      The battery-life is easy to get:
      10 AA with 1.5 V each => 15 Volts.
      Continues power ~ 30 W total (easier number). So you are drawing 2 Amps.
      And good batteries are at around 2 mAh.
      So 1h with rather high volume would seem possible.
      And the sound-quality is good too, with < 1% for most of its range is far better than what typical loudspeakers produce, so not noticeable.

    Just picked this exact amp board up. Pretty sweet for the price. Plenty loud, the Bluetooth works better than my expensive Sony amp receiver. I think that audio sounds so clear here partially because of the clean power source. I used a 19 volt laptop power supply, there's a slight hum I have to keep gain and volume down a bit, I'll try other power supplies too. Wonder if you can bridge the channels on this. Great turotial! I started making a similar portable system using car speakers and a car amplifier and upgrading both a couple of times. Even using lead batteries to have a 18V 20kg backpack to power it.
    The next problem was that treble and midrange were so loud, the bass was lacking in comparison. So, I added a ported subwoofer and upgraded that to have a separate amp.
    The batteries got emptied pretty quick of course.
    Ultimately I ended up with a 2 x 300W RMS amp to the left and right speakers and a 600W RMS monoamp to the sub running on a gasoline generator 😅. As far as portability, excluding generator it weighed perhaps 40kg’s and had to be moved around on a cart. I had some great parties with that system!

    When played loud those batteries will run out very quickly. My guess would be less than half an hour. Because of the higher voltage it will play louder when Alkaline batteries are used instead of rechargeable ones. My advice would be to use four or five good quality Li-Ion 18650 rechargeable batteries* in series, but still the playing time will not be very long.
    Since those speakers aren't really portable you can use a notebook power supply (15-21 Volts) instead of batteries and run them from the mains.
    * to be safe, use protected Li-Ion batteries from a trusted source (so NOT China).

    That was great. It would be lovely to see you dwelve deeper into audio playback devices. So far you have made a great range of bluetooth devices, but I'd like to see you make just an amp, and a stereo set that has seperate subwoofers, midranges and chirpers. This I'd bet to get on your side the absolute love of the car audio folks. You see when people upgrade car audio, they generally have to spend a big big buck on the amp to power their stereos, often seperated into those 3 seperate ranges (sub, mid and chirp) for maximum audio playback quality. Do this bluetooth, and you'd have created a REALLY top class audio set, and have helped out a whole bunch of enthusiasts on doing what they love on the affordable.

Also, I think if you don't want to use the batteries you can use a 12V regular electric connector, like those used for some electronic devices. The price of those connectors it's around 4 dollars used and you can find those in any Salvation Army Store, Second-hand store, or Flea Market.

    Most common question in the comments section: "How long will the batteries last?"
    Audio amplifiers don't have a constant consumption rate. Also the volume level affects the battery life. And lastly, another reason why this question cannot be answered directly is that, the capacity of the batteries that you use will affect the battery life.

      @@Randy2747 Probably at least 4 hours at high volume and thats a low rough estimate. I use to use a 200 watt (4x50watt) D-class amp that would use a single 12v 7AH battery at max volume for around 2-3 hours. hes suing 15v, 1.5AH (another estimate as it depends on the battery). So 5 times less battery capacity than what I used, but also 7 times less power output.

    • @gumpi5
      @gumpi5 Před 4 lety +9

      To take the most power and running time out of it you can take up to 18 Ni-xx (xx is shortcut for both Ni-Cd or Ni-MH) cells. Fresh out of charger these are at the absolute maximum to 25 volts at 100% charge level. So let's make a calculation:
      I expect, that the amplifier will have 35 to 40 watt maximum output power. Hint: It CAN deliver up to 50 watts but there's only coming bkkrrrrkzzrrr out of speakers... :D So let's say 35 watts of really useable "harmonic" power without big distortion.
      The type AA Ni-xx cells are available from 500 to 1200 mAh - Ni.Cd or from 700 to 2800 mAh - Ni.MH.
      For extended runtime of course you can use type C cells - they are available up to 5000 mAh (real capacity! not fake 8000000000000000 mAh). But maybe you have to modify the project as the type C cells are much fatter than type AA cells. Then there are the D cells too... That's the bigfoot under all cells :D but that's not topic... b2t...
      If you take some well known brand cells type AA, let's say eneloops, they have about 2300 mAh each cell. And they are Low Self Discharge too (LSD).
      You take 18 x 2300 mAh cells equals 21.6 volts NOMINAL ! voltage
      Hint: with 4600 mAh type C cells you can double the runtime.
      21.6 volts x 2.3 Ah equals 49.7 Wh - means you can take about:
      40 watts for an hour long.
      49.7 watts about 50 minutes.
      Or when you power up the amp to 3/4 of its maximum, you should have a runtime of about (30 watts / 49.7 watthours capacity) 90 minutes.
      Or at room volume (let's say 5 to 10 watts) about 10 to 5 hours.
      Bluetooth power consumption is so less that I won't calculate it... It would last for weeks when only bluetooth is on.
      sorry for the long text. If you have questions, feel free to ask. :)

      im using a regular Bosch Fast Charger... how should i use the Power Input from the AMP to Charge the Battery which is powering the AMP ? xD you know theres the battery -> which powers the -> AMP and the "external" charger -> to charge the -> battery... i have 3 3Ah Bosch 18V Li-Ion Batterys so if one is down i switch them and charge the empty one (with the Original Bosch Charger) ... like i wrote before ive build a plug to connect the Power Input of The Amp to one of my Bosch 18V Li-Ion Battery... and since it lasts some days ... not only 1-2 Days like i wrote before... its not even bothering me that i have to switch them because it takes seconds to unplug one and plug the other one in...

      18650 would be great if they werent so expensive. for this amp, you could get away with just a few 18650's and it would have a much longer playtime. although they are around 10€ each

    Can you use a 4x18650 battery pack
    Doing this should mean a shorter amp design, you will just need to have a charging circuit which is easy to find on ebay

      I'm planning on doing this build but instead of the batteries used here, I have decided to opt for 6 X 3.7V lithium polymer 18650 batteries adding to a total of 22.2V. I have decided to choose this option because I will be able to set the gain mode to a higher decibel level, plus I will hook up the battery packs using deans connectors, so I can easily plug those into my smart charger. I just want to know.. Is there any particular reason I shouldn't go with lithium ion batteries, or at such a high voltage? Thanks for your time.

      @@ivanminchev888 the batteries are wired to the connector that he uses to power the amp.. i guess that you can make a charger with the same connecter and plug the batteries (the battery pack) to it to charge.. but that's not shown in the video..

    Also, I'd love to know what that track was you used to demonstrate the rig.
    I've put mine together now and it sounds great on a pair of Mission speakers I got from a charity shop. I chose a different power rig though with a 2200mah 3 cell lipo battery and a simple balance charger. This way I can run it off the mains too as the charger uses the balance lead of the battery whilst the amp draws from the main battery plug. Works great :-)

      Your battery plan sounds good! Just remember that lipo cells don't like going below 3v, so some kind of cut-off or alarm is recommended. Something you probably know already, but one never knows.

      In relation to the battery voltage issue, can you think of a way of raising the cut off voltage of the amp from 8v to say 9v? That would be the icing on the cake me thinks....
