That charger is overkill, they make much simpler and cheaper chargers for lead-acid batteries. Also, the 30-amp power supply is way overkill, that radio probably only draws a maximum of 10 amps at full volume. Although, the wiring job is done well and looks very professional.
He probably had them lying around and just pieced it together. I mean, I don't think one would go out of their way to buy a car radio just to make one of these.
you are a hero been wanting to do this with an old car stereo and this was randomly recommended to me.. you even include a list of everything needed in discription. this is too perfect
Made one myself using lipo batteries, a 18cm sub, two hybrid high/low speakers and one 8cm mid speaker . I added a bluetooth module and leds. Love it, so thanks for the idea.would you like to see vids of it? Tho it draws 12amps avg You should also seal the boxes lid with some rubber, in my case it boosted the sound a lot.
I built a car stereo boombox around this same time you made this video so that I can use it with my outdoor projector system and have never felt happy with the results. Seeing this video, now I know why. I have always called mine version 1 expecting at some point in the future to remake it, I have a feeling that time is coming very soon. Thanks for the video, gave me some great ideas on how to improve the one I made previously.
Great project! One addition could be some solar cells with a boost converter on the top of the box to take advantage of the sun in a picnic or something!
The boombox I built like that back in 1995 still works great, though it is on its third battery. Those lead-acid batteries only last 3-5 years. I used a Radio Shack 40 watt EQ booster, two 6.5 inch 2-way speakers, and originally a 15AH battery from Science Surplus. Box was made from 3/8 inch plywood, glued together and L brackets for corner support. I meant to put in hinges for the lid, but just having it press fit into some weather stripping held it in place pretty well. I plugged my Walkman into the aux input, and enjoyed my favorite tapes. Of course now I play my music from my phone's headphone out.
If you put a piece of rubber or foam on the border of the lid and fasten it with screws you will get much louder and deeper sound because no air pressure is escaping. Please try it, you will hear a big difference!
Bissekat1 Make sure you're using free air type of speakers in sealed enclosures. You just gotta flip your subwoofer over by the magnet area and look for any small screen looking vents or ports between baffle and magnet part of subwoofer speaker, that's a free air. Some have a circle port about 3/4 inches on center of magnet that's also a free air.
I made a similar boombox about 25 years ago. Several in fact. Seeing your video, reminds me I could use a CD player boombox with an input for an MP3 player, or SD cards..
This is a very nice project you did. The beauty of it is, if the car radio would break, all you would need to do is replace the radio and radio wiring harness. All of the other wiring would be in place already.
no it won't be as good as wooden material,,why do u think that there's so much speaker box out there made out of woods?..guitar made out of woods because it's acoustically better than let's say plastic
my friends and I use to do this back in the late 80's. We made a portable box with 4 12" speakers and another box for a car stereo and amp and powered it with a car battery. We would use my friends parents mini van, take out all the back seats, and would cruse down the strip. Now we didn't care that we was in a mini van, when your 16 and 17 years old, thumping music that can easily be heard 50 feet away and hanging with your friends was a blast. AAaahhhh... the good Ol' days.........
I love your content. Your radio uses an average of below 2 amps, plus under 3 amps for the battery charger. Screw it he says! Enormous 40A power supply to power it 😂😂
I started building mine in May 2015 and kinda finished it in April 2016. Now I have a portable bluetooth speaker with radio that goes for 8 hours of music on a decent volume. I got to use a lot of old parts that were laying around. My handlebar is from an old bus, my speakers are Magnats from 1998 or so. My charging system is an external automatic charger that goes into mains and is directly connected to the battery via XLR plug. The whole system weighs about 12 kg ...... But that's okay, it'll help you become super strong over time ;) I will do a CZcams video at some point but that will take some time
Wow this takes me back. I made something similar with a radio and speakers from my mums Austin and used a neighbours motorbike battery for power. The box I put it in doubled as the seat on my go cart. I was about 10. Good times :D
Must have been 1965, or perhaps 64 not sure which, when I saw my first car radio run from 110 volts. It didn't work great, but after some tinkering, we got it playing well enough so listen to the KOMA Good Guys (KOMA was a very powerful radio station in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Everyone in the Midwest tuned their AM Radios to 1520 anytime after the sun sat!) My buddy didn't have a radio in his bedroom, and wanted to be able to listen after his huge family (mom-dad and 8 brothers and sisters!) went to bed. So we visited the midnight auto supply (we broke into the local wrecking yard after dark) and acquired (stole) a car radio from an old Chrysler (they had fancy radios!) to power it, first we tried an old battery charger (found at the local dump ground) but the rectification and filtration were just not that good and there was a Lot of noise over the speakers, (2 count 'em 2) front and back speakers! So we tinkered some more, and I think we finally found a way to filter the power from my old Lyonal train transformer through an old motorcycle battery, and at long last we had radio! While at first all we could get was the local AM radio station, another visit to the midnight auto supply found us with a pair of rear mount radio antenna's with very long cables that allowed us to mount one antenna on each window of his bedroom, we ran a ground wire from the normal mounting points where the antennas grounded out on the car body, and drove a six foot long copper rod into the ground. That night, we had KOMA and the Beetles blasted away through his bedroom. We thought we were in rock and roll paradise! Then his dad came in and saw what we had built. Now he was an old fart, he had farmed most of his life, and was probably the most honest man in town, so all the parts from the Midnight auto supply were returned and the music died. Nice to see that our idea survived. We were lucky his old man didn't find our stash of 8mm porn films, secretly ordered from the back pages of some men's magazine. Man those were disappointing, all they consisted of were some very blurry black and white films of naked women playing baseball! If you ran them at 1/2 speed though you could almost see nipple!
It did inspire me, so I built a similar project, a powerful boombox without a car radio, I used a 30w amplifier, some good quality speakers and I also put an Inverter so I can use the large capacity of my 18650 Li-Ion battery pack for powering something I might need.
1987 was my Beach Buggy ready, and i needed a carstereo. I put a Sony cassette player in a wooden box with a amplifier and 4 speakers, the Buggy is gone, still got the stereo!
i built one that didnt use wall power from shit i found at good will and wood i found on the side of the road all for $40 and it was actually pretty good, it just didnt look very good lmao
The first and best homemade. Car Radio pulls a lot, but the Result is the safest and most well thought-out that I've seen. I would try the Car Radio against a small Amplifier based on 12V and the corresponding Audio Transmitter. All TOP so LIKE
Instead of the switch, why not use relays? You could have set up the relays directly to the power supply. Whenever there is power from the power supply, it could disconnect the battery and connect it directly to the power supply to allow the battery to charge and it would do this automatically instead of having to add funky switches in the front. Then the only switch you would need is one connected to the ignition wire of the stereo so you could turn the car stereo on and off.
Also why use a funky Tunigy charger surely a generic car battery charger would do the trick? Or look for "12V Battery Automatic Charging Controller Protection Module Auto Charger board" on the Bay of E
Lite Tactic Car battery chargers that put out more than trickle charge are much larger than that switching power supply. Also, car chargers tend to be more expensive than the Chinese made power supplies.
you can also add a subwoofer at no power amp cost because i am sure that pioneer has direct sub drive that lets you add a sub on one of the rear outputs the violet/purple wires and it put out 70 Watts it will a nice touch to the boombox and you can use the speaker and box from the logitech unit that failed respond if you checked that out
Try using a solar charge controller, it'll accept you load and keep the battery charged and maintained. When you unplug your unit from the line the battery will seamlessly power your load.
SLA is by far the best choice still as they are dirt cheap and they have a good life span if looked after. The cells are also the perfect 12v, so perfect for PC and car electronics. Other technologies are suitable when you're really concerned about weight and money is no object.
+Toxicity because lead acid batteries dont blow up in your face unlike lipos, plus the need for a over charge over discharge circuit, plus they supply less and less power when heated up,not only that, lipos are dangerous because they can detonate like a bomb at any moment, once i had a friend that was soo happy to get a Samsung Galaxy Note 7,3 days later he was treated for 3rd degree burns on his hands, now, why dont you tell me why you think Lithium Polymer batteries are safer than Plain Safe lead acid batteries
+Trodded Sloth LiFePO has nothing to do with Lipo batteries, thats are 2 very different technologies. One big advantage of LiFePO is that they are save, they can't blow up. Thats why they are good replacement for Lead-Acid batteries.
I remember back in the early 90s I didn’t have the money for a decent cassette radio so I collected all the bits I needed and built something like this. Everyone wanted one when they saw what I built lol.
If I remember correctly in the video he states that there should be a link to how he wired it. If you take your time anyone can build this. Just can't expect to get it done in a day. I dabble with electronics a small bit. I will say it looks intimidating but only for a minute. I want to build one for myself but might go a step further and put an amp and a sub, and then add some wheels to make it a little more portable. Awesome job!
*Wow, cool tutorial. If only I knew what the hell you was talking about with electrics.* *Me on ITV Breaking News, ''man tries to create boom box but blew himself up''! LOL.*
My grandfather has a similar setup running straight from a battery in his garage with no case. I might make something similar, I have a radio or 2 from an old truck.
I have to admit, I really enjoy watching all your projects. When you are ever in Los Angeles USA. I am taking you out to have a Great Steak and Beer. Great Show!!! Bravo!!!
Xylenthian lol it’s not complicated at all.. A TDA2003 amp, a 3.5mm jack, volume knob, only 1 lead acid battery, cheap 4 ohm 10w speakers and an enclosure out of plywood instead of using a premade chest. Would be easy and cheap, probably around 30 dollars.
Kmart had a very cheap Kraco radio on sale. The $14.95 set came packed together with speakers and antenna. I actually used cardboard box for the enclosure for two weeks until I made one from metal.
I made something like this for our high school shop class about 7 years ago. i used 2 6x9 speakers in boxes, a plywood box, an old sony headunit and a 350 watt computer power supply. (put a switch on a wire to make it switch on and off)
what are the magnets in this design?))) it is very funny. The cover must jump from bass sounds. And you need to make either the phase inverter or the system of "closed box" . But in any case, to do the cover tightly closed(latches) sealed
Chris McCaulley Where have you been? Manufacturers have been doing this for various products for years. As long as it's designed properly then there should be little issue. That being said, for various reasons, I would not recommend building one the same as what he did. Anyone wanting to make one for themselves should research the relevant info first to educate themselves on the various things, including proper speaker designing/building. You can't just slap some speakers in a box and think that it is going to sound good. There's a lot more to it than that.
JVC sells a quality deck with speakers for low cost. I have a cheap $60 Pioneer in my car with USB, bluetooth and AUX Paired with local sony speakers and the sound is good. The local car store here "cost less auto parts" has some kind of set that looks like a asian clone of the JVC bluetooth set for even lower cost. I'd take a look at Greatscott's bluetooth speaker possibly build your own Aux or Bluetooth boom box with something cheap inside like a mp3 player or radio if you don't want to hook your phone up to it. If you have the know how as well.
I literally made something like this 2 days ago. :) It has aux, bluetooth, usb, CD, AM/FM antenna. It has USP battery but also you can plug it into wall. It has 2, 120W RMS 2 way speakers.
You could just buy a simple small $70 led battery and recharge it when it dies(which may never because your not draining too much). My cousin and I built a subwoofer cooler with 4 6x9 speakers with 1 pioneer 12" sub and if we played it constantly we would charge it maybe every couple of days. This powers all of the speakers and the 1100w sub so im sure it could power this for days.
Wow! As always, your work is amazing and beautiful. I wish I had your talent to be able to make such fantastic things. I'd give anything to own something so special-something that cannot be purchased at any store. I don't know what to say. Thanks for sharing and making me jealous! You rock!
@@dcfuksurmom although I'm usually against snobs, in Audio more expensive typically does mean better. Of course there are those brands to avoid that are just inflated such as BOSE.

I did something in the same ballpark except I used 4 speakers and no batteries. Somehow I started clicking on videos similar to this one and now...now I want to build another one in a different manner.
I have that radio! It’s been in 4 cars 3 broke down the other caught fire due to a recall not getting done. I still use it today! But it’s now my speakers for my computer.
I built a portable party system using a 240v to 12v transformer, and some old car stereo gear I had laying around, it had 6 pioneer comp speakers, a 400w rms pioneer sub, 7inch lcd pioneer touch screen head unit, a mono block amp and speaker amp, and a capacitor 2 farad for the sub, on wheels due to the weight. My mate had her 21st, and asked me to bring a stereo so had to build it in 1 day XD couldn’t work a battery into it as it would die.
That charger is overkill, they make much simpler and cheaper chargers for lead-acid batteries. Also, the 30-amp power supply is way overkill, that radio probably only draws a maximum of 10 amps at full volume. Although, the wiring job is done well and looks very professional.

I won't gonna make it, but it's pleasure to watch it
Didn't know the trick seen at 6:35. Very smart and a great time-saver
What are your qualifications? Are you an electrical engineer?
Yes
+hardstyle905 nice bro Im currently in MIT mechatronics
jacobs industries Mechatronics seems fun
Eon Guipagho ३
GreatScott! Awesome, I just graduated myself with an electrical engineering degree.
Does the pitch of your voice only hover between C#3, D#3 and F3?
you desperately need a voice module upgrade.
XD
I made something like this for our high school shop class about 7 years ago. i used 2 6x9 speakers in boxes, a plywood box, an old sony headunit and a 350 watt computer power supply. (put a switch on a wire to make it switch on and off)
Waiting for the day an electrical engineer and an audio engineer can come together to make something actually good
i love comments
you would
come over...
Drinks at my place...
ogic signal.
A Banana i dont care it feels the same i think?
Make an Electronics Basics video for transistors!!!!1
he has.
??? Can you give me a link?
+Nick1p.x go to his Channel to playlisty, and there is Electronic basics playlist
I just checked there is nothing there about transistors, where did you guys see it????
to playlisty dobre
I bought a stripped drift beater, will definitely make one of these to take the place of the back seat lol
This project is easier for me to understand because it mainly about electrical circuiting
what are the magnets in this design?))) it is very funny. The cover must jump from bass sounds. And you need to make either the phase inverter or the system of "closed box" . But in any case, to do the cover tightly closed(latches) sealed
ignorant are they))
But very hardworking and it's good!

is that the 3d printer power suply?
Yes
My 3D printer power supply give 20A only and not 30. I think your power supply is better (sorry for the english i'm french).
German + Engineer. Thats what you get guys. Epic
with a imax B6 you can put a clamp on the "start" button to start charging automatically in its previous battery setting when it is powered.
Putting electronic devices in wooden box's is highly dangerous as they can easily catch fire!
There's a lot more to it than that.
some cheap and good car radio with usb and aux ports?
BLAUPUNKT STUTTGART 120
thanks :)
Jvc kd-g341
great work, i'd only use some ic and a rellay to switch the box off when the voltage drops low so the battery doesnt die
I literally made something like this 2 days ago. :) It has aux, bluetooth, usb, CD, AM/FM antenna. It has USP battery but also you can plug it into wall. It has 2, 120W RMS 2 way speakers.
2:09 was so funny....lmao....lol
BHAI sub to me plzz
2:43 charging controler...
yeah, just why. and also, 30 amp power supply?
A smart car version of this would be awesome.
You could just buy a simple small $70 led battery and recharge it when it dies(which may never because your not draining too much). My cousin and I built a subwoofer cooler with 4 6x9 speakers with 1 pioneer 12" sub and if we played it constantly we would charge it maybe every couple of days. This powers all of the speakers and the 1100w sub so im sure it could power this for days.
i made it
Awesome
me too with wheels for my bicycle
Welldone
You are german
vollig richtig
Is it possible to create a bluetooth box almost from scratch?
Sure
Cody Slab because its a bluetooth speakerbox not an subwoofer
Alter zuerst dachte ich mir schon am Akzent, dass du Deutscher bist. Aber jetzt weiß ich es eindeutig : das Pflege-Öl hats mir geflüstert.
your a scientist/enginner....respect....your vids are amazing and accurate.
I cannot understand this. it blows my head of what are you saying
magnets to hold the top closed? come on, you can do better xD
But magnets are cool!
what it it falls upside down haha
i'd just stick to some latches or clips xD
it's a prototype u know
مرحبا السلام وعليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته مطلوب
Wow! As always, your work is amazing and beautiful. I wish I had your talent to be able to make such fantastic things. I'd give anything to own something so special-something that cannot be purchased at any store. I don't know what to say. Thanks for sharing and making me jealous! You rock!
Very cool Scott, electronics and woodworking are two skills that are very handy to have.
videos great but the stereo n speakers are cheap...i would use premium audio systems
just because its more expensive or "premium" does not mean its better. you sounded like a complete snob just now and i almost punched my laptop.
@@dcfuksurmom although I'm usually against snobs, in Audio more expensive typically does mean better. Of course there are those brands to avoid that are just inflated such as BOSE.
134513 1435 as someone who works on most forms of electronics, including audio, I have never noticed much difference between cheap and expensive speakers, its all in how you set it up
But Can It Run Crysis?
4k 144fps max settings, no problem
1:07 Made in Vietnam. So proud!
this is too complicated
i dont know a shit 'bout elctricity itself, ill mess something up
KABATU KONTROLE
"Over priced" HAHAHAHA
this guy loves his switches
I did something in the same ballpark except I used 4 speakers and no batteries. Somehow I started clicking on videos similar to this one and now...now I want to build another one in a different manner.
" DIY " its sooo easy do this everyday ..... not
It's actually pretty simple. He did a great at explaining this.
+x anon Now that sounds like fun. As for the bluetooth why not buy one of those cheap $20-25 ebay stereos that has it built in?
+ts46176 sotrue
As you have to handle with mains voltage it's not really suitable for dummies.
I HAVE THE SAME CHARGER !!!! ALIEXPRESS FOR LIFE!!!! XD btw really nice video i liked it ^° hehe Pflege-öl 4 life xD
dude i also have the same switches... did you break in in my house ? 😝😂😂
and the same fucking power supply 😂😂😂😂
i am really scared xD
I hate kids who reply on their own comment 2 times.
you are a craftsman scott!!!
Alter du bist der Chef!!! Danke!!!
You are really good at ele tronics men
I have that radio! It’s been in 4 cars 3 broke down the other caught fire due to a recall not getting done. I still use it today! But it’s now my speakers for my computer.
a boombox can change the world
Nice, might I suggest some vibration reducers to prevent rattling inside the box.
