Watching back all the old Star Wars movies in preparation for episode 9, Rise of Skywalker, brought to my attention something VERY troubling. The Jedi are awful! Now, don't pull out your lightsabers just yet. There is SO MUCH evidence pointing to the Jedi having some shady practices, especially when it comes to the Padawans. Strap it tight, Theorists. I'm about to rip open all the troublesome truths about the Jedi Order.

YES. This is one of your best theories.
Seriously I always felt this way, and completely understood the dark side characters who were ex-jedi. THAT'S A LOT OF TRAUMA. Honestly I pity the ex-jedi sith more than anyone else in Star Wars ... they were forced into a cultish organisation from childhood, forced to not act on their very probably volatile emotions, and ran straight into the arms of someone who specifically looked for folks like them just to manipulate their hatred and grief and trauma for his own gain.
Also, Obi-Wan is definitely my favourite SW character, but I honestly think a huge part of Anakin's downfall was his fault and due to the strain of their relationship. Part of what I like about Obi-Wan is that he looks like just a plain old kind of boring hero dude, but his character is actually pretty complex, deep, and morally grey. He's really uniquely written imo.
Both the Jedi and Sith are evil, with the Sith being worse but only because the Jedi are bad in the first place. The force is ... well ... a huge force to be reckoned with, and it's super easy for having that much power to corrupt someone, even if their order is specifically designed to prevent such an occurrence.

I think this is why you see styles like Mace Windu who actually used the dark side powers of his Opponent to increase his abilities when facing them.

@@grimlord3181 The sith were basically "extinct". Like the Jedi said they had been for millennia. This is because of the sith rule of 2. "Bane's Rule of Two mandated that there could be only two Sith at a given time: a Sith Master to embody power and a Sith apprentice to crave it."
The sith were lurking in the shadows following Darth Bane's plan of following the rule of 2 so that the sith could grow more powerful than the whole Jedi order and exact revenge.
"The Rule of Two's establishment coincided with the creation of a plot, known as the Grand Plan, for the Sith to corrupt the Galactic Republic from within, diminish and disgrace the Jedi Order, and eventually rise and conquer the galaxy; the Sith would soften up their enemies before zeroing them in for total subjugation."
This was eventually done by Darth Sidious. Now there's an argument to be had that I think @eternalmiasma5586 is trying to say here. The light side of the force was more powerful than the dark side in terms of numbers and probably power for a long time after the Jedi-Sith war. This argument relies heavily on the fact that some say the Jedi interpreted the "prophecy of the chosen one" wrong. That the chosen one was supposed to bring balance to the force, but the balance means equal power on both the light and the dark side. To me, all light side and no dark doesn't seem too balanced. Like day and night.

The whole Jedi Order was also molded after Buddhist Monks from what I read in articles and watched in special features. He might have allowed those two things to have a little too much influence on the Prequels than it should have. I mean, come on. Marriage and attachments lead you down a dark path? What kinda of logic is that? Sure a divorce is heartbreaking and sure you're going to blame the other person amongst other things, but this is just ridiculous.

I disagree with Qui-Gon being in the same basket as the other jedi. In fact, it would’ve been best if he trained Anakin, and then maybe he wouldn’t have turned into Vader.
Qui-Gon was the one jedi who saw the problems with the council, and often disobeyed the jedi code and made questionable decisions where the moral implications are albeit murky for what he perceived as the greater good. If you remember, Anakin was by far a special case, Qui-Gon himself sensed an enormous amount of force power from Anakin, and found out that this kid had to be the chosen on.
Qui-Gon is the one jedi who cared about people(I suppose you could count some others if you use the expanded lore, like Obi-Wan and Plo Koon, etc), as he showed when he saved Jar Jar from the Gungan king. Yeah he played it off as “This gungan could be of use to me”, but he saw a life in danger and decided to intervene, even using jedi mind tricks to get the job done, embracing morally murky decisions for, again, the greater good. I wouldn’t say jedi mind tricks are like brainwash, they’ve always been a sort of influence, a momentary guide of a persons thought process, rather than a full on-and-off switch
Qui-Gon may have been someone Anakin could’ve talked to Padme about, and he’d be understanding of it.
So after the Padme nightmares, and after when Palpatine told Anakin about Darth Plagueis and the ability to save others from death, Qui-Gon could’ve told Anakin about how dying during childbirth is only a singular possibility, and that “force healing” isn’t an ability specific to the sith. (Not gonna get into the specifics of force healing and how it may work cause thats really controversial) but luckily, it wouldn’t even come to that as when Anakin tells the Council that Palpatine requested that he be a representative on the council, Qui-Gon would have the insight to point out that Dooku told Obi-Wan that the senate was under the control of a sith lord. In fact it may not even get that far as Qui-Gon may look into the matter himself, and Palpatine may have been discovered earlier, and he would’ve been killed.
These were facts of the movies, they didn’t frame the jedi as virtuous, they framed them as the instrument of their own demise

Thing is, in the Legends continuity, there's a specific event that the Jedi committed (under the Republic's orders) that confirms the evil of the Jedi, and created the undying enemy that is the Sith:
They committed genocide against the Sith populace. Not just the actual force users, but the civilians, too. Men, women, children, all were murdered in an attempt to completely wipe them out.
This is why the Sith are constantly focused on hatred, fear, and revenge: because millenia before, the defeated civilization that could have surrendered and made peace... Was completely eradicated. And the survivors fled, remembering this genocide and creating the evil Sith as we know them today.

What? No, it isn't. If Anakin hadn't turned to the dark side, which you blame the jedi for, Palpatine wouldn't have been revealed as a Sith Lord to the jedi. There would have been no confrontation in which Anakin saves him and then order 66 would have gone off without a hitch and Palpatine would have still killed all the jedi and taken over the galaxy. Blaming the jedi for the Empire is ridiculous. If they hadn't been around, Sidious would have still taken over, because he didn't actually need Anakin. Or any of the jedi for that matter.

Anakin's descent into darkness was well portrayed.
Because some Jedi never completely loved him, didn't respect him, didn't trust him, didn't take him seriously and even despised him.
As a child before Obi-Wan started teaching him, he was hated and psychologically bullied by other children "Anakin is a slave to his feelings" and that was only because of envy because he was much more gifted and skilled than them.
    .
    .
    .
And many other things and sufferings he and his padawan, Ashoka Tano, the Jedi like to cause.
Yoda during the Clone Wars, he met the spirit of Darth Bane in Sitt's tomb, which is created by the rule of two.
And later in his visions he saw Anakin becoming Darth Vader and didn't do anything about it because I thought it wasn't worth it.
Anakin was a slave all his life - Tatuine, Jedi, Love, Dark Side.
He became a father figure to Qui-gon Jinn, during his stay in the temple he was psychologically bullied and called by others "Anakin slaves to his own feelings", he lost his mother, the Jedi never married him all the time and without proper evidence he accused Ashoka and caused her to leave and finally he was afraid of losing Padmé.
The only and worst support given the events was Palpatine who was a fatherly substitute for Anakin from the beginning.
When he used Mace Windu's hand and after killing the Jedi he was already in the dark as the dark side itself showed him to the planet Mortis The One Son.
On Mustafar, Padme almost got him from the dark side, but Obi-Wan discovered him and screwed it up.
Anakin "Vader" built his castle on Mustafar and thanks to the two sbosobs he tried to revive Padmé but he could not see it due to the fact that Luke and Leya were already born, they were the only ones preventing it with their existence.
Too bad he didn't find "Word between Wolrds" on the planet Lothal. He would create an alternate Reality or go through all of history. ;)
    .
    .
    .
You have to find out about the lost 20 Jedi like Count Dooku, about the fates of Jedi with the ability to see the future, young apprentices who were not taken by any Jedi masters to learn, who showed little talent for the force and were not shown to the temple which in some cases was quite drastic, . ..
Blinded by ego, aronance, pride, absolute help to people and not following the path of forces.
Honor to the exceptions and one of the true Jedi was Master Fey.
The Jedi and the Fallen Jedi (Sith) have betrayed the memory and message of their common ancestors of the Je'daii Order by their actions and the endless battles of their Civil War. 😊
May the force be with you.
And may you lead the force. 🖐️

Jedi are not technically evil in the way of how they attain new recruits. They are not kidnapping kids because the parents, if they have any, are aloud to say, "No, I do not want my child going away." However, children are not allowed to see their parents because as mentioned in canon, attachments can lead to the Dark Side. Does not mean they can't have relationships with others, and the Jedi are not said they shouldn't be cold hearted, but they are to have compassion, not attachments. They have to be taught from an early age in order to fully build a strong foundation into the Jedi Order.
Also, everyone knows it is hard becoming a Jedi, so the younglings would need years in order to perfect their training and hopefully becoming Jedi Knights.
Of course, anyone who's anyone would tell you the Jedi Order had its flaws as the Jedi soon became prideful and arrogant, and their rules also were sometimes wrong and unfair, which is why some Jedi were "grey" Jedi. They respected the Code, but when necessary, they would disobey tradition in order to do what was right.
As many people would also tell you, the prequels show you the flaws in the Order. But how they went about recruiting their new students was not entirely wrong, but I see what your getting at.

There is also the possibility for a jedi to not get an active knight after they pass their tests.

    @DarthSagius Před 4 lety +542

Matt I do have to say one thing regarding Qui Gon: He was more of a Grey Jedi, and he tried to follow the Will of the Force itself. He could tell that Anakin was unlike any Force-sensitive child anyone ever encountered, and felt that the Force had intervened in some way for the two to have met. If ANYONE would've gone to check on Anakin's mother(or even try to free her from Watto's grasp), it would've most certainly been Qui Gon(had he not met his end by Darth Maul). He almost always went against the grain of the Jedi principles, which is why Yoda made his comment to the young Obi Wan in the end of Episode l, "Qui Gon's defiance I sense in you. Need that you do not."
Qui Gon was offered a spot on the Jedi Council, to which he declined as he felt his purpose as a Jedi was to be guided by the very Will of the Force. He was also trained by Dooku when he was a Jedi Master. Arguably, Dooku's training would've been a more suited platform of training and teaching than that of the existing Jedi Code. Dooku understood there were many areas of the Jedi Order that were flawed, but as a Master, he was able to carve his own path in some way. Dooku was also one of the few members of the Jedi who believed they were meant to do more than being the peacekeepers of the Republic, and felt that the Jedi had lost their way(and even their connection to the Force itself) during the time of peace from a Force-user's standpoint. Even more-so when discovering the unfortunate death of his former apprentice and dear friend.
I mean for crying out loud, when Qui Gon encountered Darth Maul for those brief seconds on Tatooine and Obi Wan asked him who the unknown assailant was, "I don't know, but he was well-trained in the Jedi arts." was all Qui Gon had to say. The Jedi made the foolish mistake of believing that the Sith had been eradicated, and simply set the thought of their inevitable return to the deepest corner of their minds.
Rather than training in preparation for the Sith's return, they pretty much said, "Screw it, they're gone forever. Why would we need to be prepared for an enemy that no longer exists?". It was that very misguided assumption on the Jedi's behalf that led to their downfall. They had, in a sense, betrayed the Force itself through their lack of actions when they became mere lapdogs of the Republic.
On top of all this, the Jedi Council placed the Chosen One under the care of newly-deemed Jedi Knight Obi Wan. Had Qui Gon lived, the Council would've gone with Qui Gon's request to be Anakin's Master(after Obi Wan faced The Trials)...and A LOT would've played out differently. Anakin would've had immediate trust in Qui Gon's teachings, since Qui Gon operated more as a Grey Jedi than anything else. Anakin would've become far more powerful under a much wiser and more open-minded Qui Gon than a 'fresh off the Jedi Knight press' Obi Wan. Anakin would've felt comfortable and confident enough to reveal to Qui Gon his love for Padme, which Qui Gon would then give him guidance on the matter as a whole. Palpatine would've met his demise in Episode lll, Anakin would've been deemed a Jedi Master, his transgression of a romanticized relationship with Padme would've been overlooked(most likely due to Padme being a Senator of the Republic), and Luke and Leia would've been ushered into the Jedi Order. In time, a more resolved Jedi Order would be formed, and the Jedi would be prepared for the next revival of the Sith with the aid of the Chosen One plus 2 offspring.
TLDR; If Qui Gon hadn't died, Anakin would've remained loyal to the Jedi Order and Episodes IV-IX wouldn't exist(for the most part).

I love your channel and I know this is for entertainment but I do still want to break it down a little bit. They didn’t take babies, parents had to give their babies willingly. The droids they used to train the younglings were not harmful, sure they hurt a little but no serious damage was ever done, they were purely used to sharpen the younglings reflexes, it’s like meditation takes time to learn and get proficient at. Would you send an untrained soldier into combat? They didn’t ignore their emotions and they weren’t told to ignore love either, in fact Anakin said it best: Jedi are not forbidden to love they are forbidden to have attachments, Jedi are encouraged to love in a much more general sense. Attachments cause one to get exactly that: attached. With attachment they are then unable to serve the will of the force, if they aren’t serving the will of the force than they are serving themselves, which leads to the dark side. Finally just because being a Jedi is “a commitment that is not easily broken” doesn’t mean a Jedi couldn’t leave the order, they absolutely could almost at any time they wanted but as with anything, leaving it has a wider affect and everything would have to be worked out and it would take time. Saying it could not be done is foolish.

The Jedi code reminds me a lot of Christianity. It's intention is well placed, and most Christians are good people, but there are corrupt self righteous individuals that claim Christianity that don't practice what they preach, and it's the same with the Jedi Order. They're so focused on their own self interests and having what they believe is a moral superiority, that they don't realize, or maybe they do, idk, that they judge, and condemn, and actually go against their very teachings. Also please don't bash me for anti religion, I am a Christian myself, but these things are unfortunately true with some people. We all know the type.

Well spoken. This is kind of why I try not to judge people for how they live their lives because I’m no saint myself. There’s nothing wrong with holding someone accountable for certain decisions when you aren’t sounding like a hypocrite or appear to be forcing your mindset on them. There’s no perfect lifestyle but typically when you respect people they will acknowledge or even appreciate it. As far as the Jedi go they made stupid decisions that went against their own code. For starters, at least 2 members of the council lost control and acted afraid or angry in all of the Star Wars prequels. Also it’s very hypocritical for them to say one thing but do another(The Phantom Menace), lie and manipulate someone who’s done everything to be loyal(including put his mother in the past), or claim to not be soldiers but take place in a war only because it concerned them as much as everyone else. I can’t hold much against them for training children because real countries have done this but those people typically made sure that needs were met. If the Jedi Council had been honest with Anakin about everything that concerned him then he would’ve seen less the need to consult Palpatine. Also it was idiotic for the Jedi not to monitor Anakin if they were so concerned that he was dangerous. I’m not saying that they needed to eye him like a hawk but they could’ve have spent time with him other than just hearing his reports on missions that he and Obi Wan were sent on.

To add the recruitment, most times they had treaties or deals with other groups, either poor ones they saved, or maybe some factions that supported them and force them to find force sensitive children that are then looked at by a master for recruitment. Most parents didn't have a choice when giving up their child to become a Jedi, because the only other time we saw children be recruited at all is when they are left orphaned during the war and the Jedi noticed they have a connection with the force.

  • @johnbower7452
