His newer song & MV "IDEA" is even more impressive. The dance practice is absolutely flawless and beautiful. You will not find a more smooth and precise Kpop dancer than Taemin. He moves like liquid silver, especially in "IDEA".

Taemin is heavily inspired by MJ. The choreographer of Criminal, Koharu Sugawara is also similarly inspired by MJ as well, so you can definitely see the various influences here & there. Taemin & Koharu both makes the moves their own! I highly recommend the MV along with IDEA which is linked to Criminal. The lyrics are a work of art as well. I also like the rewinding.

OK so one thing you need to know about Taemin, is that he is the king of dance in kpop (a title he actually earned) and he's a workaholic perfectionist. Everything he puts out there is calculated and professionally monitored, so you can assume that everything is intentional. He actually reshot this "dance practice" because it wasn't as perfect lol. Anyway he's a legend, hope to see you reacting to more of his work because he's so special and unique and I think you'll notice that as a dancer 😉

Taemin and Kai are best friends, they practically grew up together from their trainee days. Taemin is part of the group Shinee while Kai is from EXO. Both groups are under SM Entertainment, now SM created a group called SuperM to promote in US. In the US, the group is under Capitol Records. They are composed of idols from EXO, Shinee and NCT, they are also called the Avengers of Kpop.
While you're on Kai and Tarmin, could you please please please react to SuperM's Tiger Inside? I promise, it's going to be worth it! The mbrs are like the creme ala creme of their own groups.

Taemin is best known as the Korean Michael Jackson for a reason, but even he is inspired by MJ, he has created his own style "T-pop" it's so unique, you will see it. Taemin is a legend in the industry, a great performer on the stage and adorable baby off the stage, a role model for many idols and one of most respected IDOL in kpop. He really has everything vocals, dance (the best of the best), stage precence, visual. Just "A LEGENDARY ARTIST" like he is. Hope you will get to SHINee too, his group, his family, SHINee practically raised. SHINee is a legend too "princes3of k-pop" they debuted in 2008, they just came back from the military service, so we will have a SHINee's back soon according to Taemin "king of spoiler" too, but HE REALLY IS A KING.

    2008 debuted with SHINee
    2014 debuted as a SOLO

Since you like how the dancers in the back are doing something else, 'Famous' is great since the japanese dancers with taemin are popular in their own. 'Idea' his latest one his back up dancers are known teachers and choreographers.

Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
"Idea" is another masterpiece and you will be even more blown away when you see that dance practice. You really need to see "Idea" next.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
And yes, all of Taemin's dances tell a story. As he has said, he specifically designs his choreography to be a part of the story within the song and MV. So, what you are seeing in his "Criminal" dance is the fact that he is supposed to be held captive by his lover who is the criminal he is singing about in the song. That is why at the beginning you see his wrists are tied up. As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that he is now suffering from stockholm syndrome, so he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc.
So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person/criminal (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So, in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself) he still can't help but love them (his career) and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D (For "Criminal" Taemin had 3 or 4 different choreographers who collaborated to come up with this choreography and several of his backup dancers are also choreographers. You have to be amazing in order to keep up with Taemin, so his dancers are extra special.)
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Criminal," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after 12 years Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 27) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite. That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular.
When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he become the most powerful and magnificent performer that command the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL.
SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.
As a member of SHINee, Taemin is expected to constantly be coming out with something you have never seen or heard before. SHINee's whole concept is that they are SM's experimental boy group, which means that they are ALWAYS changing up their sound and style and reinventing the industry with every new release of theirs, even within the same album. The industry looks to the members of SHINee to show them what the next style of song and dance will be. And, not only does it have to be new to them, but it is expected to be something new in the industry overall. So, after more than 12 years Teamin has pretty much done every style of song and dance out there, and yet, he still manages to one up himself and create something new that continues to blow our minds every time.

Taemin is considered to be the most versatile dancer in the Korean industry and heavily regarded by professionals as one of, if not the best, dancers in Korea. He’s a perfect mixture of technique and artistry. He excels in many different genres of dance and has spent the past 12 years (even though he’s only 27) mastering his craft. It honestly doesn’t get any better than this man.
Yes, he is heavily influenced by MJ (he's actually one of Taemin's idols), you'll see little tributes to him all throughout Taemin's discography. However, despite being influenced by MJ, Taemin has a style that is completely unique to himself. It's so distinct. He's known for his more androgynous style, since he was always told by others that he has a more feminine look to him. He's learned to embrace that image and create something that is completely his, he wants to blur the lines between masculinity and femininity. You'll find that none of his dances are made for one specific gender, hence the reason why he likes having male and female dancers with him. He's also stated before that he isn't worried about topping charts with his songs, he'd rather work to build a sound that makes a unique impact as opposed to following trends. Basically, he wants to start trends, not necessarily follow them (and he does, both as a soloist and as a Kpop group- Shinee) People can often recognize Taemin through his unique style and incredible dancing skills. He's the perfect balance between technique and artistry. For a better idea of what Taemin is about, I recommend:
    - Move dance practice: This started a massive trend when it was released, mainly because of the sensual choreography and also because it was the first time where people were really exposed to a male artist trying a more androgynous concept/style. Everyone was covering this song, from other idols to actors to comedians. It's one of Taemin's most iconic dances, people are still covering it to this day. It's known as the "Move Disease" because you can't help but move when you hear it. This dance looks easy but it's actually considered to be one of the hardest dances in Kpop because of the amount of body control you need. The subtle movements seem like he's barely moving, but he's able to isolate every bone in his body to move that way.
    - Famous dance practice: This was Taemin's 2019 Japanese release, and it's a complete 180 from move. Still requires a lot of body control and isolations, but here we get to see what Taemin is infamous for: popping. This dance is just so hard hitting and his moves are just so sharp and precise.
    - Goodbye dance practice or Flame of Love performance video: Goodbye aka Sayonara Hitori was Taemin's Japanese debut release and Flame of Love is another one of his Japanese songs. Here, we get to see how Taemin really made a name for himself as an artist. He's not only known for his great body control and sharp movements, but also for his fluid like dances. He's definitely the best male dancer in the industry when it comes to contemporary dances. One thing that really sets Taemin apart from other dancers is his great ability to show his emotions and thoughts through his dances. He uses his body so well and effortlessly glides as if his body is made of water. It's definitely something else. Goodbye is a song that most Taemin fans will recommend, but I love Flame of Love equally as much. Also, the choreographer for Goodbye (Koharu Sugawara) is actually the same person who choreographed Move and co-choreographed Criminal. So I'm interested to hear your thoughts on whether there are any similarities you see between these 3 different dances, since I'm not a professional dancer myself.
Thanks for reacting to Taemin, hope you get to react to more of him, because there's so much more you don't know about when it comes to him. He's also the youngest of a group called Shinee (legendary 2nd gen group who's been around since 2008) and they are all equally as talented.

Thanks for reacting to Taemin! I think the way he dances is fascinating, a combination of very fluid movements and sharp precision. It is very detailed and exquisite and elegant in a way, but he is also able to be very hard hitting too, especially in his popping. I would recommend his Idea dance practice next, and then Famous dance practice. I hope you will react to more Taemin soon!
I also appreciate the pausing because it is really helpful to see what you are talking about and sometimes other reactors will just keep talking about one move while the choreography continues and they end up missing a lot. So personally I think pausing and rewinding is best when you are analyzing the dance. Thanks again for the reaction! Thank you so much for reacting to Taemin!!!❤️ We would LOVE to see more reactions to Taemin and to SHINee (his group) bc they are PHENOMENAL. Especially their live performances. They're absolute legends.
YES, you were completely right about it being themed. Taemin is really a master of concepts, and his latest album Never Gonna Dance Again (NGDA) is an artistic masterpiece.
(He mentioned that it is themed around finding his identity.)
The prologue to the NGDA album is a song called 2 KIDS (he improvised the dance scenes for that MV)
The title song of NGDA: Act 1 - Criminal - was based on stockholm syndrome. In the MV he was both the suspect & the innocent. I think, for Taemin, this can refer to his life as an idol, his art and career etc...
In NGDA: Act 2, Taemin talked about how IDEA (title song) is influenced by Plato's Theory of Forms - which is a philosophical theory/concept about the existence of 2 different realms: the physical and the ideal/spiritual realms. I think Plato basically says that the physical realm is full of imperfections (perfection cannot exist) and there exists a more real, perfect, and ideal realm beyond the reach of the physical realm, which contains perfect, eternal entities called forms or ideas.
We would love to see your reaction to the MVs (pls watch with subtitles), IDEA dance practice, and more Taemin + SHINee content. You will 100% not regret discovering SHINee 😉❤️ thankyou!!

Hahaha, yes! To answer your question, Taemin expressed that the choreography for this dance was meant to resemble dead people dancing and he was doing his best to capture how a dead person would move so it is like zombies. The song was written in a combination with two other songs. The first one (2KIDS) is representing how he is lost, the second (This one, Criminal) shows the fall and how at this point he is just giving in, and the third part (IDEA) is the rise and how once he cuts out that which was hurting him, he's able to finally rise up and open his eyes.

He's been in the industry since he's 14 and has spent half of his life with SHINee and building up his career :) His other MVs include Move, Want, Danger, Press Your Number and his newly released song Idea :)

The move with the marionette arms was def supposed to be reminiscent of a walking corpse :D The theme of the song is like 'you're a criminal, you're destroying me but I like it' so the imagery of being bound and, uh, destroyed is a big part of it. And ofc very MJ inspired, even in the music. You can see MJ in a lot of his songs, but it's always distinctly Taemin.

Let me help you get to know Taemin and the massive scope of his music. First, to even grasp the importance of the contributions Taemin has made as an artist within the Kpop world, I suggest you watch this excellent mini-doc put together by Walawala, "The Artist: Taemin: czcams.com/video/m2_MVBxmdyc/video.html . It demonstrates the extreme respect and admiration directors, producers, lyricists, dancers, and other Kpop artists have for Taemin through their own words, articles, and interviews. You also hear about Taemin's work ethic and vision from his own lips.
Taemin began his career at the age of 14 when he debuted with the, also legendary, 2nd. gen., Kpop group, SHINee, as their main dancer. They are widely known as the "Princes of Kpop" for their killer live vocals, harmonies, dancing, and performances. Then, in 2019, Taemin was the first idol approached by his company, SM Entertainment, to form the new super group, SuperM, as a collaboration with Capitol Records and Marvel.
Now, at 27, and in the 13th year of his career, Taemin has gained legendary status due to his work ethic, tenacity, and many accomplishments in the field. As a totally self-taught dancer (no formal training like many other idols), he attended an open audition for SM Entertainment at the age of 12 and got in on the first try and made the first cut. This is extremely rare and difficult to do. Then, unable to sing due to immature vocal cords, he debuted at 14 as SHINee's main dancer. Nicknamed "Tone Deaf", Taemin worked extremely hard, practicing night and day on his singing and was helped by Onew & Jonghyun, the main vocalists of SHINee, to learn how to sing. In 2014, at the age of 21, Taemin became SM's first-ever male soloist from an active boy group to be given a solo debut. His onstage charisma, persona and success as a part of SHINee made him an immediate success as a soloist. From that moment on, SM dubbed him their "ACE". Taemin also became the first idol to debut four different times in three different generations of Kpop. Through all this, he also managed to get a degree in music and film. To see the clout and respect he commands within the industry, I suggest you watch this excellent mini-doc by Walawala, "The Artist: Taemin": czcams.com/video/m2_MVBxmdyc/video.html
Since he cut his teeth with SHINee at such a young age, and with SHINee being the major trendsetters in Kpop, especially in the area of introducing new and experimental music, Taemin is not afraid to be daring, experimental, and smash the traditional cultural norms of Korea. He even demolished the standard cultural gender divisions of dancing when he introduced the song, "Move" in his 2017 comeback. The song boldly proved that men and women can both do the same choreography without the need to segregate. Taemin regularly has both men and women as his backup dancers. The song created quite a stir and even a virus called "The Move Disease" where every commentator, variety show host, and most idols rushed to cover the dance. It's actually still going on three years later. However, no one can quite match Taemin's fluidity and finesse. His dance practice emphasizes his extreme body control & fluidity.
There are three things to remember when reading Taemin's lyrics and watching his MVs:
    1) Taemin usually has dual meanings for his lyrics: A) take them as you read them and be happy; or B) delve more deeply to reveal the true meaning.
    2) Taemin is a Christian (devout Catholic) so there is also usually a lot of religious imagery, symbolism, metaphors, and allusions within his lyrics and MVs.
    3) Taemin is DEEP and very intellectual. Much of what we know about the lyrics come from listening to him explain it on interviews and IG LIVEs. The rest is due to our (fans) research. This song is part of his newest album that was released in 3 parts: "Two Kids" (Prologue), "Criminal" (Act I), and "IDEA" (Act 2). They are all linked by a story that must be pieced together by watching all the MVs and reading the lyrics from the 18 songs. The concept for this song is Stockholm Syndrome from the victim's perspective - Taemin; however, Taemin is also the perpetrator (the criminal). Basically, as Taemin has stated, he's trying to break away from his old image/persona and create a new one - "Destroy me more" (and make me even better, as though refined by fire). Right now he's leashed by his old persona ("I'm on a leash called you" - meaning himself) The process of changing your persona, the image that has been with you since the beginning, into a whole new identity is painful but necessary to achieve what he wants, which is to become his perfect "IDEA" of Taemin.
The statue with him in the sign of the cross is a symbol of resurrection/rebirth - the newly emerging Taemin. As a devout Catholic, many of his MVs often have a lot of meaningful religious imagery and metaphors. Taemin said the beginning scene, when he is down in the dark with the lava floor represents the deepest depths of his present persona. The lighter scene (in the white room w/the speakers) is the mid-progression of his rebirth. The first scene with of him being suffocated while crows flap around him again signifies the slow death of that old ego. Then, the second scene of him suffocating with the bag over his head has butterflies fluttering around him signifying the hint of a newly emerging ego (metamorphosis) "IDEA" of Act II is the climax of the story and centers around the concept of Plato's Theory of Forms (that no one can reach perfection on their own; we are created by an outside power and only that outside power is perfection) The lyrics and MV represent the death of the old ego and resurrection/rebirth of a newly enlightened ego. I believe "Criminal" is linked to "Famous", also on Act I. The short explanation being "....being "Famous" may be "fabulous" but it's "dangerous" and creates a lot of drama, and non-celebrity Taemin wants "no drama". The requirements of fame (perfection always; flawless in appearance; always on top) are expensive (in personal terms) and can create an over-inflated Ego. This entire album is a masterpiece.
Taemin is a very detail-oriented person, and with every MV/Song/Performance/Concert, he is very involved and his fingerprints are everywhere. However, more so in this comeback than ever before. He personally chose the director for this MV (same one who did "Press Your Number" for him), and he co-directed with him to get his exact vision across. In fact, the key change at the last chorus was Taemin's decision. Taemin also re-wrote lyrics & instrumentals and had input on the set and album design for the MV & entire album. He also teamed up again with Sugawara Koharu & Kasper to help him with choreography. They are all friends and know Taemin's taste and give him the freedom to alter the choreo as he wishes. Koharu has also worked with him on his songs, "Want", "Move", "Sayonara Hitori" and "Flame of Love", as well as SHINee's "Good Evening". His creative influence is now even being felt in SuperM, as he dips his fingers into their choreographies, fashion decisions, and set designs, etc. He just can't keep his hands off anything...for which the other members of SuperM have expressed much gratitude. LOL...and SM basically lets him do whatever he wants because he's their "ACE".
All of Taemin's solo MVs are stunning because of those little details and hidden meanings waiting to be found. To see his incredible range as a natural dancer, I believe you would also enjoy his dance practices for "Want", "Move", "Famous", and "Sayonara Hitori" - which is quite different. Sorry for the length of this comment, but it's important to understand the background of any new artist to understand their depth. I hope you will continue to explore his vast talent with SHINee, SuperM, and as a soloist.
