This is the second part of the second day's journey of Kolkata - Keonjhar bike trip, in which we visit Bhimkund, Sitabinji and Kanjhari Dam. In the first part of the day we have covered three spots near Keonjhar town - Gonasika, Bara Ghagra and Sana Ghagra. Now is the time to go to the other side of Keonjhar.
Situated at a distance of around 60 km from Keonjhar town, Bhimkund is a spot on the mighty river Baitarani, where you can see deep gorge, wide stony river bed and could hear the wild roaring river flowing through multiple channels. We went there in summer, but can only image what beautiful as well as scary view it would be during monsoons. One can see a couple of waterfalls in the river in monsoons. The place has some mythological significance as well. It is believed that the second Pandava Bhim created a pool (kund) with his mace (Gada) to quench their thirst during their exile in forest. One can see a large statue of Bhim and small temple near the entry gate. However, we entered Bhimkund from Keonjhar side. There is another Mayurbhanj side entry point to Bhimkund which is further away. But the authority is building a bridge on Baitarani to join the two sides. Two wheeler parking charge at Bhimkund is Rs 20/- and entry ticket is Rs 10/- per head. From Keonjhar you need to reach Dhenkikote and then take a left turn for Bhimkund; or you may take a left turn from Pipilia square way before Denkikote and reach Bhimkund through pleasant forest roads to reach there. The time taken is the same in each case. it is needless to mention the smooth and silky road conditions in most parts of Keonjhar.
From Bhimkund we came back Katrabera on the main highway via Dhenkikote and the took a left turn to reach Sitabinji at a distance of around 4 km. Sitabinji is known for its strange and giant rock formations, Sita's temple, ancient fresco paintings and historic rock inscriptions. The place gets its name from a nearby stream, which is named as Sita. Legeds say that Sita Devi stayed here at Rishi Valmiki's ashram when she was abandoned by her husband Rama and she gave birth to the twins Lav and Kush. One can find a small shrine, which houses the stone idols of Sita and her sons, which are located in-between a natural cavity formed by two treacherous, large boulders, which balance against one another in different angles. Another large boulder, which looks more mysterious, is named as Bhandara Ghara, meaning the 'store-house' of Sita. The place is said to be the hiding place of the stolen treasures of the dacoit Ratnakar, who later transformed into Valmiki and composed the Ramayana. The most well-known structure here is probably the rock of Ravana Chhaya which in translation means the Shadow of Ravana. The two balancing rocks are placed in the shape of a mushroom or a half-closed umbrella. It is said that the king of Lanka, Ravana, has a major contribution to this structure, as he was well known for his magical powers. Here, at the ceiling of the hanging rock one can find some ancient fresco paintings which are eroding and fading away. The paintings showcase a majestic figure sitting atop an elephant with a sword in hand along with a number of followers on foot, who are further accompanied by horsemen. Not far from here, one can find inscriptions which date back to more than 1000 odd years. A few geologists have argued that these boulders are one of the oldest formations to be found on earth.
On our way back the last place to visit was Kanjhari Dam at a distance of 19 km from Keonjhar.
Kanjhari Irrigation Project is a reservoir scheme across Kanjhari nallah, a tributary of river Baitarani to provide irrigation to a large neighboring area. Surrounded by hills and green forests this dam is a beautiful place to experience a quiet and soothing sunset.
The next ay we will leave Keonjhar, visit Hadagarh Dam on Salandi river and will finally end our day at Panchalingeswar. So stay tuned for the next episode.
