Nice video…love that setup!
This video was really helpful. I had the Yakima rack for 3 years and now that l upgraded to a bigger truck my Retrax cover won’t fit. With the Dimond cover and the Yakima it’s a great set up. Can’t wait for my order to arrive. 👍🏼
Nice work
I bought the same set up for my 2019 powerwagon. Will be installing tomorrow if it doesn't rain
Just an FYI we just installed our Diamondback cover and I believe the lock rods should be installed with the first bend of each rod closest to the side rails should be facing the floor bed of the truck which will give them a nice straight look and better functionality.
Hey man thanks for the video. Questions is it 4ft across the ladder rack like can I still haul sheet goods between them on the cover?
Thanks for the video - definitely helpful. My question is in your f150, did you clip those tabs that are in the way while installing the cover clamps? Looks like the correct positioning of the cover requires them to be clipped unless the clamps are placed right next to each other. Thanks for your help
I did not remove any of the tabs under the lip of the bed. I was able to position the clamps around them. I haven't really looked at the tabs that closely to see how essential or nonessential they may be.
I bought the exact same setup, except I have the 8in tool bin instead of the 13in. I had asked Diamond Back about pre-installing the Yakima rails and was told they don't do it. But after watching this glad they didn't. I bought might for the exact same reason, want to carry a couple kayak's on top and still be able to load camping gear above and below the db cover. Did you buy any Yakima accessories or are you going to just tie down your yaks straight to the bars?
Nice Vid!
Thanks
Thanks! I actually purchased some Yakima Handrolls for the kayaks and was able to buy several matching SKS cores from Rack Attack to lock them to the bars. I am hoping to pick up the kayaks this weekend and then I might do an update video.
Very cool look of the setup! How much weight can you put on the yakima rack?
The Yakima Rack is rated for 300 lbs dynamic and 1,200 lbs static making it ideal for boats, rooftop camping, and etc. The DiamondBack HD can have as much as 1,600 lbs on top of it.
This is sick. I currently have a Tacoma with cap and racks. It’s good but too small for my needs. Just got a ‘16 tundra dc 8’ bed. It’s massive and looking for a way to haul lumber and material. I like this setup a lot- in the bed, on the bed, on the racks. These things are rated for some good weight too. You could stack 20+ sheets of plywood on that diamondback. Yes it’s pricey- $3900 for this setup on my truck but it’s gonna be amazing for my contracting business.. tools inside, plywood and lumber on top, etc. Thanks for the video!
It is quite nice. I actually need to do an update video. I have added a few complimentary accessories, one of which is HD bars for my roof. That should make hauling longer boards and etc. even easier.
@@wme735 well I pulled the trigger on this setup for my tundra 8’ bed. Diamondback hd with the Yakima overhaul HD racks. It’s coming tomorrow! Thanks for the vids!
@@c1rca23 enjoy!
Are the Yakima racks easy to take on and off? I love this setup but want the option to take the racks off when i don’t need them. Could you do a video taking them off and putting them back on? Thanks for making the videos!
I guess it probably depends on your plans for the truck. To remove them there are two nuts on each tower that need to be removed. If you are doing a rooftop tent or heavy overlanding set up I would say that removal makes sense and it would be beneficial to buy the additional bars that connect the front and back towers for stability and you could probably build a hoist system in your garage or yard for easier removal and installation. For anything else I would just likely just keep them installed year around. If you don't have rooftop bars you may keep the HD bars on the Overhaul on the lowest height setting to minimize wind noise. I have installed HD bars on my rooftop now and you definitely get wind noise. Even with the Yakama wind fairing there is some noise. I would actually probably recommend going a different route the Yakima when it comes to the wind fairing sadly.
My DB HD cover is arriving in a couple days and I had them preinstall the Yakima base tracks. I still don't fully understand why they don't line up if DB knows which truck bed you're putting it on, I mean it's common knowledge the F150's bed does what you described.
When it comes to the install directions they recommend installing the tracks x inches from the edge to give it a wider footprint. In most cases I would say that is the best way to install and would be easy for most people to screw up on the a truck bed like the F150 that is slightly narrower in the back. Honestly, I may have drilled my holes improperly if I had done it. The one case where it doesn't work well is if you are installing Yakimas sidebar that connects the front and back bars. I would imagine DB doesn't worry about that product because they don't offer it on their site and it negates the feature that allows the panels to open. Unless they come out with a solid panel (one piece front to back) and slide out cargo like Decked I just don't see them bothering with it. It was a non issue for me, but given that some plan on overlanding and never opening the panels I wanted to make sure those people were aware.
Hey man, I'm buying this rack used off FB marketplace. The original owners package contained "yakima bed track kit 1" not 2 as yours did. This is because he mounted his on the tundras bed rails.
I just ordered my track system from DB separately. My question is, do I now need to go to yakimas site and order track kit 2 separately?
I would contact Diamondback directly and make sure you have what you need. With my set up it was a packaged deal direct from Diamondback with the tracks already installed. I found them to be helpful and they can keep you on track (no pun intended).
I keep looking at this rack for my gladiator with the diamondback hd but I want the best of both worlds. I want a lower profile for a tent and the above cab for lumber. Frump!
Good stuff. Do you know, does Yakima have an adjustable rack like this one that goes on the Diamondback HD like that but is lower at the lowest setting than what you have there, so that it is nicely below the level of the cab roof, but can then be adjust to above the level of the cab roof? I'm planning on getting an F150, either a Platinum or a Raptor.
Yakima has a standard Overhaul that sits lower but is not adjustable and may not support as much weight. At its lowest setting, my bars can be just below the cab. Right now I have them set above the cab in line with bars on my rooftop.
Thanks for the reply. What you say makes sense. Another question, if you will. Once the track is place onto the Diamondback HD cover, is it a simple and quick thing to remove the Yakima support rails, and later put them back on? I love the Diamondback HD, and I do think that adjustable height Yakima rack system is great, but when I don't need the rack, I'd prefer to remove it so only the track is left on the cover. I just don't know if that's realistic. This may be a longshot, but is the track the same for the Yakima and the Front Runner? Boy, wouldn't that add some versatility.
@Nate-zy5ce The track on the Diamondback is permanently attached. I would just assume the Front runner and Yakima track are not the same unless you find someone local to test it. The Overhaul HD arms can be removed by removing the two bolts on each arm securing it to the track. Whether you remove it or not would depend on how your tent attaches to the bars. If it is easier to remove the tent from the bars I would just leave the Overhaul HD on.
Assuming the tent is already off the rack so only the arms remain, since it just involves two bolts, it sounds like removing and putting those back on is quick and easy, would you agree? I hadn't thought about keeping the tent attached to the arms and removing all of them at the same time, that does sound like a pain. I would only put the tent up when I needed it, assuming that is easy enough. I may or may not want to keep the arms up all the time, depends on the various uses and how often I'd use them.@@wme735
When you say cross bar you mean something mounted to the side forward and aft?
The cross bar is going to be the long bar that attaches on the top of the rack system and in my case they are 68" long (wide). If you are buying the Yakima Overall HD from Diamondback they will sell you the track kit, the racks (the arms going up) and the crossbars as a complete kit. However you will need to tell them how wide you want the crossbars to be. It is possible that I could have used the term rack and bars interchangeably in the video and if I did sorry for the confusion.
Great video. Did you see it leak water at all ??
I have only seen some slight water dripping around the rear tailgate on the rear corners. I can't say it was the Diamondbacks fault as much as every nook and cranny of a tailgate isn't water/air tight. If you need it to be that way you will likely have to modify your whole truck bed and make your locks super tight on the Diamondback.
I got the front runner rack wonder if the Yakima could use the same rail system I wanted something higher
I can't say for sure it would work. Yakima uses their own track system. If you could find someone near you with the Yakima set up you could take a closer look.
I also have the front runner rail and went to a yakima dealer and found out it would not fit . so no
Also if I bought a roof rack for the cab I could put it higher,
Has anyone tried yakimo rack, diamond back cover plus low cap guard? Is it possible to fit all three?
I don't recall seeing that combo, but depending on your model, it might theoretically work with the low cab guard. I would contact Diamondback and discuss it. Assuming the panel is long enough for both in line or you are willing to install the tracks a little closer together to clear the low cab guard side supports it could work. I imagine you would have to do the track install yourself though.
I believe the tracks are also offset so the cover can still fold back flat.
The side of the bed closest to the cab is slightly wider than the rear. Diamondback installs them as close to spec as they can, but they had to account for that. I actually emailed Diamondback wondering if something was wrong before I figured it out. I followed up with another email saying whoops and they confirmed it. It only matters if you want to connect the racks with another accessory. Some who have installed tracks but don't keep the accessories installed all the time have suggested offsetting the tracks as you mention so they can lay flatter when opened.
What is the kit part# rail?
I believe the particular one I had installed with my F150 was the bed track kit 2 with part #8001172. I would double check with Diamondback to make sure you have the proper parts for your particular model. The great thing about buying from them is they will make sure you have the track kit, the Overhal posts, and the HD bars for your install.
#8001634 that's the right part #.
are these the 68" bars?
Yup. I have the 68" bars on the Overhaul and the rooftop.
@@wme735 thank you!
You forgot to mention the most important part the track to mount the racks
If you order the racks at the same time as the cover you can pay for Diamondback to install the tracks for you like I did. Just make sure you know if the tracks will be in line with each other depending on what you are doing. On my F150 the bed gets narrower at the back and then installed each set as wide as they could on the cover. Not an issue for me, but if you wanted to install the extra cross bars that connect the front and back of the racks on each side it could be an issue. Personally, as long as you don’t need the tracks installed a certain way, it is worth it to have Diamondback install them. It is an expensive cover, the last thing you want to do is drill in the wrong spot.
Very nice cover but that design with using racks kind of defeats the purpose if you carry anything on those racks. Your cover will not be able to be opened.
It all depends on how you are using it. 95% of the time I have nothing on the racks and I am able to open the cover. When I am hauling kayaks I just make sure any essential tools/gear is in my camper or in a place I can reach it from the tailgate. Most of the time if I ever actually open the cover from the top it is to get something out of the toolbox near the cab.

I was lucky enough to find a year old diamondback HD. We just purchased the Yakima rack I’ve yet to install it but will be using it to carry our bikes on a couple week trip in a couple months. I did research all other options and I do believe this is my best option even though the rack can’t be opened with bikes on board I agree the covers are very well made.
Stupid . Doesn’t make sense to have that type of topper and a rack system .
We all use our truck differently. This was a good solution for my needs, but milage may vary for others. Even if you don't like this as a combination, the DiamondBack and Yakima products are very much worth looking at.
@JosePadilla care to explain the stupid comment & why it wouldn’t make sense? This product makes perfect sense for Outlanding & the addition attachments to the cross bars … Im about to install my set up
@@johnnybravo609 Because you can’t put a tent on top of your rack or kayak unless you unload that rack cargo to open the hard bed cover . You limit the rack utility . Duh
@@JoseP-hj5zo as I said before your milage may vary on this combination. I would say 95% of the time I never have anything on the rack so it doesn't bother me. Generally I am moving heavy gear into the camper anyways to minimize the load on the truck. If I wasn't towing, I would look at a slide out storage option for tools and overlanding, but it isn't worth the added weight. Overall, you can store items in the bed, on top of the Diamondback, and on the rack giving you plenty of ways to utilize every bit of space.
Well I would not say stupid but I don’t understand why you would have a cover that you cannot ever open with anything on the racks. You would have to remove everything off the racks if you were using them to ever open the cover. Cross bars would render the cover useless if you wanted to open it.
