I just received Genmitsu 3018 Pro now I have to see about upgrading it to the MX3 level before I have even read the manual ;-{ I wonder if Sainsmart will be offering an upgrade kit. The new software looks very appealing as does the new feature of being able to run the hand controller with the PC connected. Now if only they would come out with a version that is capable of running on the Raspberry Pi. Cheers.

    • @techydiy
      @techydiy  Před 4 lety +2

      No, but I would use a grbl based machine for PCB milling anyway, most USB mach3 controllers have a problem with height mapping / probing. I have a fix on my website but grbl is easier. There is also a problem with most 3018 machines where the z axis anti backlash spring pushes the spindle down rather than up, you can fix it by turning the spindle mount upside down.

  • @nrom6698
    @nrom6698 Před 4 lety +2

    Very good channel. I have the 3018 grbl metal frame and the 2.5w laser for a year, you can do many things with a little patience. Is the new plastic frame stable?
    Mach3 is more professional, but the small off-line controller of the grbl model works very well, and avoids having to keep the PC running with the cutting machine. Hard to choose.

    • @techydiy
      @techydiy  Před 4 lety +2

      The composite board is similar to bakelite ( if your old enough to remember that). it's very solid. It apparently has the same thermal expansion characteristics as aluminium, so it makes a good combination. The frame is stiffer than the all aluminium 3018 that I have previously tested.

Based on your description i opted to not buy it right now, seems like a very good machine but i need to find open-source software i could use with it, have no confirmations i will be able to run LinuxCNC. I guess if you feel up to the task, it would be a good addition.

      Join the facebook group, we have some people on there using Linux so don't worry. Also there is open source software and in any event you could install virtual box, buy windows 10 for a dollar off eBay which is what I did and install that and never worry, if your into linux in a big way which most linux users are you'll understand. Alternatively partition your drive and run windows 10 on the partition direct, works perfectly from Bootcamp for me on OS X. It will run in the other emulators but i chose not to do it that way as I had a spare Mac mini kicking about from a couple of years ago and thought i would just build a new Win 10 machine and run it natively. OS X is still on the drive but so far I have only booted into OS X one time on that machine. I use my MBP to create and produce the Gcode and network it across to the Mac mini and then import the Gcode and work from there. Its a brilliant little machine and an incredible opening into the world of CNC

    • @techydiy
      @techydiy  Před 3 lety

      1. Have you zeroed the z axis height on the surface of the material, before starting?
      2. If you move the z axis 20mm or 1/2 inch with gcode, does it actually move that amount ?
      If not then calibrate the z axis by going into the settings tab, axis calibration, set steps per unit (near the big red reset button), select z axis and follow the guidance. You can read the mach3 docs about this or there are videos on YT about Mach3 calibration

      You could extend the lead screws and rails etc. and the side profiles. The other option is to convert the fixed gantry into a moving gantry which will increase y axis. In all honesty though your better off just getting the right size in the first place. Lookup 3040 or 6040 cnc machines or mpcnc.

      In US terms, it's just generic superglue (AC) and a kicker (Zapkick). The activator sets the glue instantly on contact. You can use 90% isopropyl alcohol instead with similar effects. If you want a cheap source of superglue, try the 10 pack of tubes from Harbor Freight. I buy those up and empty them into a larger PTFE squeeze bottle to have an affordable supply of simple CA adhesive.

    Great video very informative and detailed thank you, l just have one question. I am wanting to buy a cnc like this, l am a total rookie to cnc Machines but am very much want to learn, l have been looking around a lot at different machines but with so many on the market l am having a little trouble finding the right one for what l want it to do. my question is would this machine be suitable for milling materials such as jade and marble, and if not could you recommend me to a site that sells the machine l am looking for? I would prefer to buy something more on the cheaper side thinking that l am just a beginner allowing me to be able to make some mistakes along the way, but if there isn’t any for a cheaper price tag l would be happy to spend the bit extra to make sure l got the machine suitable for the job, l have found a company called Sstyle that makes a cnc designed specifically for jade and other minerals but it coasts about $2800 :/

    Hi there. Your video is very nice and clean. I love it! Learned a lot!! Can you please tell me the diameter of the rods for linear bearings? Is that 10mm? On my machine they are 8mm and prone to bending a bit which makes the cnc not rigid enough for aluminium cutting

    Do I need to swap out the controller for a GRBL equivalent to run GRBL code or is there alternative firmware I can upload to the stock board to do this?
    (Think I ordered the wrong 3018 machine from Sainsmart - the MX3 as opposed to the PROver GRBL version)

      You need to swap the controller. They sell the prover controller.

    thank you for your help let me phrase this a little differently when I use the probe to set my height I set the probe right on the metal aluminum table and when I go to Carver peace it still misses buy a good quarter inch the bit is tight and there's a lot of room to the stop sensor

    • @techydiy
      @techydiy  Před 4 lety

      I have one to test but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.
      If you set the bit height manually and zero it manually, does it work then? If it does then I am guessing the auto probe script has a problem or the height specified in the script is wrong. Like I said I haven't had a chance to build it yet, so I don't know much about it yet.

      If you push the bit upwards does it move / is there play in the z axis ?
      Have you checked that when you move the X, y, z axis they move the correct amount ?. Not sure what else to suggest at this point.

    mabe you can help got all the other issues fixed now if i use easle or send gcode to candel i put a drill hole in center of material it will drill off x is 9.525mm off and y is 12.700mm off from center of material. thank you

    • @techydiy
      @techydiy  Před 4 lety

      Make sure that you set inches or mm as required in easel.
      Check that the machine moves each axis accurately e.g. move x 100 and measure it, move y 100 and measure it.
      Make sure you are zeroing the axis at the actual point you want to be the origin.

    need some help. when i load the g code into mach3 the sim displays either really small or really large and sometimes even not the whole project. I had the project set for 75 mm x 75 mm and the engraving is definitely not that small. if the g code runs its microscopic or ignores the work material zero and goes to the work surface zero. followed the instructions pretty well but found that his soft limits were a little off for me but thats most likely machine to machine.

      @@chrisdaupert8202 so it came down to the used measurements. the mill was still set to standard and not metric. once that was metric across the board everything worked fine until my antivirus just messed up the software and ruined 4 hours of milling alluminium.
