    Today I show how I rehouse my adult A.geniculata and share how I maintain her in perfect condition, keeping these large spiders is very easy once you follow a few simple rules.

    I had to give my adult male genic away he paced around his enclosure constantly all night and day looking for a mate and I felt so bad for him I ended up posting him off to a keeper who had a female. Broke my heart to give him away like that.

    My genic was probably my favorite of all the tarantulas I kept, except mine was nowhere as calm as yours. Mine had a very strong feeding response, so she would attack anything put in her enclosure thinking its food.

    Just got this as my first spider today. It is a juvenile female about 3-4cm big and she is just beautyfull. Was a bit exciting to get her from the box she came in over to her new enclosure but your videos really helped to just stay calm, have a plan and just go slow and easy. When it comes to 'handling' these tarantula's i like your style the best on YT, easy and gentle.

    My room gets around 60°f in the winter and I keep asian arboreals so I need heat mats but getting the right heat mat (infrared that don’t just heat up the glass) and thermostat (one with day and night setting) is a real pain and quite expensive (it’s around €80 per enclosure)
    Placing the heat mat and thermostat is also a hassle because you want a heat mat that isn’t too small but still want it to sit about one inch above the substrate and the thermostat needs to be placed just above or on the mat but not in front of the black part of the mat
    But I do have to say that it works very good and keeps the temperature around 80°f in the day and 70°f at night with a nice temperature gradient

  • @jerumd
    @jerumd Před 3 lety +2

    Personally, am not much of a fan of screened top lids. Id switch them in a heartbeat with an acrylic lid with holes drilled on it for ventilation. Like you said.. Losing humidity is one, but I had 4 Ts in the past who snapped their fangs right off like a twig in attempt to escape, and some even lost their claws climbing underneath those screen mesh and got stuck. Some people even report their largest Ts escaping by chewing through those screened top lids like it was butter. Maybe these keepers use plastic screen mesh to house their Ts so who knows?? But i prefer to be safer than sorry by removing those screen tops and replacing it with acrylic with some pre-made holes already drilled on em. Don't mean to bash on screed lid lovers out there, but that's just my personal experience.

    • @daveslittlebeasties
      @daveslittlebeasties  Před 3 lety +2

      Each to there own I like both but ive never had issues with screen lids .

    • @jerumd
      @jerumd Před 3 lety +2

      Never yet lol 4 of my Ts who lost their fangs have an adventurous personalities. Exploring their entire tanks after flicking the switch in pitch black. All 4 are New Worlds. Two of them are my well prized juvenile female B. emilia, and G. pulchra. I did not noticed a thing, till i kept on seeing prey items escaping out of their grasp, never realizing they just lost their pair of fangs after checking their ventral side under a clear glass. Their fangs slowly regenerated after each molt. One of those 4 like my LP regrew an abnormal fang. So yea, am done with screened top lids. They pose more of a safety hazards for those who like to explore a lot. Quite frankly those screened top lids are only meant for reptiles not Ts.

      @rebel4466 Před 2 lety

      @@rogthegoodboy3520 Dave usually uses just potting soil for those guys. I house mine in forest soil. Go somewhere, dig a little bit deeper, get the soil out. Naturally rich in all kinds of beneficial bacteria, isopods and all that good stuff. Also has a good digging texture.
      As a rule of thumb I size the enclosure at least 3 times the leg span of the spider in every direction. Higher doesn't make a lot of sense for a terrestrial spider, but you can go wider and/or deeper if you want to create a really nice enclosure as a focal point somewhere. Most people in the hobby do tend to get more over time with room becoming an issue, so we tend to go a more functional size. 30cm height 60cm width 30cm depth like Dave said is a really nice size for them. They might not use every bit in the end, but you want to give them some room to find their preferred spot. Also the larger the enclosure is, the easier you can keep a good micro climate inside.

    I really wish I had that kind of low profile enclosure for her. My geni is in a 30 gal aquarium, not really meant for these guys. I'm in the Pacific northwest so generally mild seasons (in a normal year) and mostly humid. Winters I try to keep the temps in the 70's but keeping that temp, it does dry the air out, in the room at least - my temp/humidity gauge currently says 32%. I usually just overflow the water bowl anymore as I've had mold issues in the past inwhen I spray much, but I'm just not sure which is the lesser evil for a geni - lower humidity or risk of mold?

    • @daveslittlebeasties

    We've an assumed male (unsexed) and I'm currently babysitting him, for a period of time he was quite malrurished, how do you suggest I should go forward, I've had a friend suggest having him on pinks as they're very high nutritional as getting worms in is difficult for us

      Would not feed him pinkies unless he was very bad, good gut loaded roaches or field crickets will be just fine he will soon perk up .👍

      I usually pick 3-5 times the leg span of the spider in every direction. Depending on if you want a show piece like dave said or if you want a nice and functional enclosure. Also I believe Dave is talking in cm, not inches. Just so you don't get scared about having to haul in a giant piece of glass lol
