- A. geniculata Re House and care
Today I show how I rehouse my adult A.geniculata and share how I maintain her in perfect condition, keeping these large spiders is very easy once you follow a few simple rules.

I had to give my adult male genic away he paced around his enclosure constantly all night and day looking for a mate and I felt so bad for him I ended up posting him off to a keeper who had a female. Broke my heart to give him away like that.
I♥️ genics! Love big chunky terrestrials. She is in peak condition.
Cheers mate there's no bald bums in this collection 😂😂😂👍
I loke arborials most👍😁
i got say this best spider channel i ever come cross as been watching over week and everything explained nicely , very informative and see clear too. also this guy got cool awesome accent too 👍
Thanks Martin where are you from my friend ?and thanks for your support 👍
. welcome mate. am in North Wales
This dude is very good, another good reptile and creature channel is exotics lair, he is pretty good to watch
When you said you where going to walk her over I just had this image of you putting a leash on her and bring her for walkies 🤣
Haha yes sometimes I walk them but with hair kickers its often best to just catch them up and move them.
She is very pretty. I would not want to be on her bad side.😊
My genic was probably my favorite of all the tarantulas I kept, except mine was nowhere as calm as yours. Mine had a very strong feeding response, so she would attack anything put in her enclosure thinking its food.
Just got this as my first spider today. It is a juvenile female about 3-4cm big and she is just beautyfull. Was a bit exciting to get her from the box she came in over to her new enclosure but your videos really helped to just stay calm, have a plan and just go slow and easy. When it comes to 'handling' these tarantula's i like your style the best on YT, easy and gentle.
Thank you so much my friend ❤👍
I absolutely love that enclosure! It's perfect for terrestrials. Thank you Dave for another wonderful video
Thank you 🙏
She’s a beautiful girl.
She is lovely Angela
Hi Dave ; thanks so very much for posting these videos. Even though I'm an arachnophobe, I find your videos educational and enjoyable. You & your Mrs.{The Camera Lady} do fantastic work. Props to the both of you!!!
So nice of you ❤️👍
lol she immediately stopped kicking hairs and being grumpy after you placed her on all that nice moss
She settled very quickly 👍
You're a legend Dave, love watching you with your animals 🙏
❤️❤️❤️
Can't wait until mine is that size brilliant video as always 😊
Thank you , they grow real quick so you won't have long to wait.
Hi Dave, one thing I like about your videos are they are straight to the point with no faffing about lol. What a smooth rehouse that was and she is a big beautiful girl. Where do you get those enclosures from?
Another great video, thanks for sharing 😁👍
she is in a reptile one tank I got on line I think there on Ebay too., and thanks for watching 👍
When I'm getting a New Spider I know I can watch one if your videos during my research. Thankyou.
I've admired A geniculata's for awhile & am getting a sub adult female this week. I'm very excited xx
There fantastic spiders you will love it 👍❤️
Thankyou, I can't wait till she arrives
Wow,
Well impressed!
She looks really healthy and awe so beautiful I just got one also tho she’s a sling I heard they grow pretty fast which is ok with me! Thanks for sharing Dave as always I really enjoy and appreciate yah
I just got one of these yesterday. It’s my first ever T. I got a year old male. He’s so cute. I got to see hair flicking when I transferred him into his new home lol thanks for the video. I have the same enclosure so I will be sure to water a little more often to keep up humidity.
That is awesome!
Hi Nikki, where did you get the enclosure. They look great.
@@CoyoteCanyon72 It was called Reptile One
@@daveslittlebeasties thanks so much Dave. I’m a new subscriber and love the channel.
She is a beautiful spider!
Bravo Dave, absolutely wonderful tutorial on these fantastic beginner spiders, your teachings are spot on and I learn new things every video I wish you this channel back in the mid-eighties, it was all hands on back in those days you learned as you go! Camera lady great job as usual really good shots of the spiders keep up the great work you guys and thank you!!🕷
You are very welcome❤️❤️❤️
Just rehoused mine today, some hair flicking but success!
Thanks for the video! I am going to be rehousing my little one soon.
Cool they aint to bad really let us know how you get on 👍
Shes beautiful! I always wear long sleeves and gloves when rehousing new world species because I'm also sensitive to the hairs and ive read that you can actually get more sensitive to them over time!
I think there maybe some truth in that 👍
Cheers for sharing mate, got one of these because it was so cheap. Can't wait for it to arrive next week
Hope you enjoy it!
Nice t Dave I've got female juvi they are amazing.
Great video mate.
There really lovely spiders and great show pieces
She stunning mate 😊
Thank you she is rather special
She is a beauty! But a bit feisty.....a sweetheart.
I hear you about the hair kicking, I'm not a fan either. My only two new worlds are a Cyriocosmus elegans and Psalmopoeus irminia. I basically went right into keeping old world spiders and never looked back. I'll take speedy and 'defensive' over hair flicking any day. She is a very beautiful spider though, I'm always fond of white knees.
ive found if you suffer from kicking hairs is washing your hands/arms in warm soapy water
Oh. Wow
She so cute😁
That’s how I move mine but I put a bit of card underneath 👍👍👍
I got a juvenile one of these today so beautiful
These are awesome spiders and make great show spiders.
recently got one myself and thought she was abit kicky, glad to see yours was the same though maybe even abit worse . good to know she's not just being a cow its a species thing lol
Yes they will kick at the slightest excuse 😂😂
Shes absolutely gorgeous and inspired me to go big and get a baby Brazilian at the expo yesterday. Mine is about inch and a half. Long way to go to. ❤
That is awesome!
GREAT SP. But very different from Genics except for size and locality.
@@bflo1000 I got an a.geniculata. It's not different.
@@lorimilks870 BB's are very slow growing, tend not to flick hairs, and are not as skittish as A Genics. Typical "nice" pet rocks.

Just got my first grown on sling, about 3cm, they are beautiful. Cant wait for her to grow, might have to get a few more too

My room gets around 60°f in the winter and I keep asian arboreals so I need heat mats but getting the right heat mat (infrared that don’t just heat up the glass) and thermostat (one with day and night setting) is a real pain and quite expensive (it’s around €80 per enclosure)
Placing the heat mat and thermostat is also a hassle because you want a heat mat that isn’t too small but still want it to sit about one inch above the substrate and the thermostat needs to be placed just above or on the mat but not in front of the black part of the mat
But I do have to say that it works very good and keeps the temperature around 80°f in the day and 70°f at night with a nice temperature gradient
I find it far more cost effective to heat the room 👍
Personally, am not much of a fan of screened top lids. Id switch them in a heartbeat with an acrylic lid with holes drilled on it for ventilation. Like you said.. Losing humidity is one, but I had 4 Ts in the past who snapped their fangs right off like a twig in attempt to escape, and some even lost their claws climbing underneath those screen mesh and got stuck. Some people even report their largest Ts escaping by chewing through those screened top lids like it was butter. Maybe these keepers use plastic screen mesh to house their Ts so who knows?? But i prefer to be safer than sorry by removing those screen tops and replacing it with acrylic with some pre-made holes already drilled on em. Don't mean to bash on screed lid lovers out there, but that's just my personal experience.
Each to there own I like both but ive never had issues with screen lids .
Never yet lol 4 of my Ts who lost their fangs have an adventurous personalities. Exploring their entire tanks after flicking the switch in pitch black. All 4 are New Worlds. Two of them are my well prized juvenile female B. emilia, and G. pulchra. I did not noticed a thing, till i kept on seeing prey items escaping out of their grasp, never realizing they just lost their pair of fangs after checking their ventral side under a clear glass. Their fangs slowly regenerated after each molt. One of those 4 like my LP regrew an abnormal fang. So yea, am done with screened top lids. They pose more of a safety hazards for those who like to explore a lot. Quite frankly those screened top lids are only meant for reptiles not Ts.
Love the geniculata. I'll buy one shortly myself. Any exotic pets events coming up roughly around the south of England any time soon?
The Bristol show is at the end of the month 👍
My goodness the size of that abdomen. I always think it's funny watching them flick hairs. I don't know why but it's hilarious to me.
What make are these enclosures ? . Btw I love your vids very informative and entertaining .
Glad you like them! They are Komodo 30x30x30👍
What a bloody RIPPER !!!!!!
Thank you for this video 😊 I'm about to get ready to rehouse my A.G. Can I ask what size tank you have yours in? Mine came to me already housed in a 30x30 but I feel that it's unnecessary!
She is in a reptile one and its 45x30x15 glad you enjoyed it 👍
I just picked up a big female and I am in love with it. They are definitely a display T only. Well all my Ts are display T's. I am not one who purposefully holds my T's.
❤️❤️❤️👍
Very nice, I would have dropped the tub when she had a bit of a fuss right as you put the tub on her lol
Always prepared 😂😂👍
@@daveslittlebeasties Haha, I always do things feeling that I'm prepared but never am as something unexpected always happens to me, it's worse since I got into the tarantula keeping hobby as I keep buying food for my Tarantula only for them to refuse to eat and go into pre moult which last time it happened the dubia's outgrew it lol
@@FC360D HAHA you need some red runners 😂😂
@@daveslittlebeasties I'm not allowed any as had some escape one time so been told that I either not have them or I move out, I prefer dubias anyway as they aren't as creepy as red runners lol

What a beauty! I'll be getting one myself soon :) how big of an enclosure do you think an adult fully grown female can have? I would like it to be as big as possible for a nice display.
A 30x60x30 is a nice size for them as a display 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties Thanks for the info :) if you don't mind me asking, what kind of substrate do you use if it were housed in a bio active? Pre mixed ones aren't readily available where I live so I'm looking for ideas I can use to mix my own :)
@@rogthegoodboy3520 Dave usually uses just potting soil for those guys. I house mine in forest soil. Go somewhere, dig a little bit deeper, get the soil out. Naturally rich in all kinds of beneficial bacteria, isopods and all that good stuff. Also has a good digging texture.
As a rule of thumb I size the enclosure at least 3 times the leg span of the spider in every direction. Higher doesn't make a lot of sense for a terrestrial spider, but you can go wider and/or deeper if you want to create a really nice enclosure as a focal point somewhere. Most people in the hobby do tend to get more over time with room becoming an issue, so we tend to go a more functional size. 30cm height 60cm width 30cm depth like Dave said is a really nice size for them. They might not use every bit in the end, but you want to give them some room to find their preferred spot. Also the larger the enclosure is, the easier you can keep a good micro climate inside.
I have a little one and it has so much character. :-)
Was wondering how come you changed over from reptiles to inverts??
I have always had inverts even as a kid along with reptiles im just not set up anymore for reptiles , as you would have seen from my reptile video I have to go all in or nothing at all 😂😂😂👍 I do really miss the challenges of wild caught reptiles 👍
@@daveslittlebeasties fair play, im the same, an all or nothing kinda guy. :-)
What enclosures are you using Dave? Have you done a video on enclosures? Thanks in advance.
No I havent thats a good idea👍
great video, can i ask what type of enclosure this is and where you got it from? would really like to get one
Its a Reptile One 45x30x15 I got on Ebay I think and there very reasonable price.
Dave's Little Beasties thank you
I really wish I had that kind of low profile enclosure for her. My geni is in a 30 gal aquarium, not really meant for these guys. I'm in the Pacific northwest so generally mild seasons (in a normal year) and mostly humid. Winters I try to keep the temps in the 70's but keeping that temp, it does dry the air out, in the room at least - my temp/humidity gauge currently says 32%. I usually just overflow the water bowl anymore as I've had mold issues in the past inwhen I spray much, but I'm just not sure which is the lesser evil for a geni - lower humidity or risk of mold?
Most mould will not harm your Ts it just looks unsightly to us ! you could try a full mesh top more ventilation often stops mould 👍as for the humidity they will take it quit low so you could dry your enclosure out and start again 👍
Forgive my stupidity...... but what's the reason for re-housing her into the same size enclosure? Thanks. Beautiful Spider she is!
Only to improve her conditions and freshen er enclosure up 👍
Hey Dave new sub, can you tell me who makes those enclosures your whiteknee is in ?
There from Reptile one , I got them on Ebay 👍

@@wayneunderwood3886 Anytime my friend 👍
Have you had to add extra heat for like the theraphosa Stimi, I saw a plastic enclosure with two heat mats on top, massive enclosure
I have gone the other way and keeping them cooler 👍as I think generally they are kept too hot 👍
i wear gloves when dealing with my geniculata enclosure because of the hairs.
What Spider would you recommend as a beginner?? I'm really fond of the Pumpkin Patch breed
Yes they ae not bad , I think its more about how confident you are at dealing with them that said the Brachypelma family are good beginner spiders
Lasiodora parahybana is a wonderfully docile and easy to keep species, they're inexpensive and easy to find, and they can get VERY big if that's your thing!
Stupid question but do you keep your substrate damp or dry? My geniculata never leaves its hide and I have damp substrate constantly so could that be why? Should I let it dry and just wet one corner?
I try and keep the lower levels damp and the surface dry , by moving over to the bio-active this gives greater control of this, they will tolerate it dry for quit long periods as this is what I do to get them in condition for breeding , if yours is very small they often hide but are out much more as they grow .
@@daveslittlebeasties ah ok thats good to know, this is my first tarantula so very new to the hobby, thank you for replying your videos have been helping me out alot, keep up the good work❤
Just added a 1.75 inch white knee and a pulchripes
Hi Dave, I’m looking for a new enclosure for my adult geniculata and i see you had yours in an enclosure with no ventilation apart from the mesh top, I have mine in an Exo atm because of the air circulation but I need a specific size and I’ve seen a few like yours with just top ventilation so how do you find them as apposed to an Exo?
I really prefer them top ventilation is all thats needed👍
@@daveslittlebeasties cheers thanks for the info Dave 👍
Thinking of adding an A geniculata to my collection, would one of those enclosures be good as a permanent enclosure for an adult?
Yes they would be fine 👍
Can you please tell me what is the substrate you used in this video
Its leaf mulch I collect from the woods 👍
0:54 i mean what did you put in the enclosure, Coco Fiber?
We've an assumed male (unsexed) and I'm currently babysitting him, for a period of time he was quite malrurished, how do you suggest I should go forward, I've had a friend suggest having him on pinks as they're very high nutritional as getting worms in is difficult for us
Would not feed him pinkies unless he was very bad, good gut loaded roaches or field crickets will be just fine he will soon perk up .👍
what size tank is that dave ,and would that be its forever home ?
Its a 30x30x30 and as a maintenance enclosure its fine but for breeding I prefer a larger enclosure👍

what enclosure would you recommend for a Geniculata when they reach 5 inches?
A30x30x30 is fine as a maintenance size or if you want a show piece I would go60x30x30 or around them sizes
I usually pick 3-5 times the leg span of the spider in every direction. Depending on if you want a show piece like dave said or if you want a nice and functional enclosure. Also I believe Dave is talking in cm, not inches. Just so you don't get scared about having to haul in a giant piece of glass lol
