What should I explore next in my ongoing Day ___ Was Born series? Leave a comment!
The Wire would be a good pick. The first season is stellar, but it does take a while for it to get going. It's not until the midpoint in Season 2 where the show really starts to fully come alive, and the show just kept getting better from there. The fifth season was still pretty good, but it wasn't the best. It was hard to top the fourth season, but at least the show ended on a high note.
I need to rewatch The Wire. I haven't watched it in like 13 years. You're right about hitting its stride in 2nd season. I love how they focused on different settings for each season.
@@EntertainTheElk Deadwood, one of the best TV series of all time.
Never seen this show. It's a crime I haven't watched it.
Northern Exposure... It would also make a VERY good Day It Died series, because the last season is very divisive.
It's a great show and very intelligent. It's about quirky, small town Alaska. With the main character being fish-out-of-water Doctor from NY.
It's like if Twin Peaks didn't have murder, the FBI and supernatural evil, but instead was just about the eccentric characters going about their lives.
In a show with so many heartbreaking scenes, the one that got me the most was the screaming match between Carmy and Richie at the end of season 2. When Richie started yelling "I love you!" in response to Carmy's insults, I thought they were going to be able to de-escalate, but Richie's "I love you!"'s fell on deaf ears and, like real-life, it only escalated, yanking the rug right out from under me. Season 3 can't get here soon enough.
I didn't notice the yelled 'I love you's" until my 2nd viewing. It struck me too.
Yes!!! I was actually really shocked that the I love yous didn't reach Carmy.. but I think it shows how he's stuck in his unprocessed trauma (and stuck literally in the fridge).
Forks is my favourite episode of the entire season. It made me so emotional. Richie's journey was magic.
Completely agree.
“Ritchie, drive.”
We earned Forks. We absolutely needed it.
I like it too, but there's absolutely no way he went from cleaning forks to being some professional expo guy in JUST ONE WEEK. They showed him digging the restaurant out of the hole when things got crazy and Carmy was stuck in the freezer, but they were backed up sooo much and they made it seem like within 20 minutes everything was back on track. Absolutely no way that could happen. I liked the arc and him realizing his potential and worth, but it was way overblown and unrealistic. It's a show, I get it, but they keep things pretty believable. This wasn't one of them.
I always thought the potato scene with Tina was less that she was doubting herself, and more that she’d been being so rude and petty to Sydney and expected that same energy back. Like she’d fucked with Sydney so Sydney was gonna say her potatoes were shitty just to be petty and make her do it again. But Sydney was just straightforward and casual about it.
❤
The last episode when cousin handles the orders and hits it running was so good to watch, like you felt how that achievement finally gave him what he was looking for.
Dude my heart grew 3 sizes. And I hated Richie when I first discovered the show
The last 2 minutes of s1 ep8 made the stress of the whole rest of the season worth it for me. A big sigh of relief
Season 1 had a perfect ending. It made me worry about S2 but those fears were quickly put to rest.
My favorite part about that is that he almost makes the pasta in ep1 but decides not to and throws away the canned tomatoes. Almost a subtle hint that they had to go through all of that growth and turmoil before they could find the money(hope) and joy at the end.
I love those closing moments, too - the sudden serenity of Carmy’s smile (little brother to big brother - & a glimpse of what might have been)
As well, there’s the United Family vibe at Family Meal - made me wish I was there!
‘Omelette’ (season 2) - apart from the beautiful tone of THAT scene, which shows us how Carmy & Sydney find comfort in each other - I love watching Syd make an omelette in real time! It’s details like this, & the bakery scenes with Marcus & Lucas (even the colour palette is reassuring) that leave me with a buzz of happiness:
Rewatching episodes, I find more details to love - & the soundtrack is totally perfect:
Simply the best, Chef!
Thank you for your commentary: since ‘Drive My Car’, I’ve been a MUBI Supporter - I love the range of genres on offer, & always look forward to seeing what’s next!
I love love LOVE Tina's arc ❤️🔥
Seeing someone discover the joy in doing a good job, in WANTING to be good, in accepting and rising to challenges, lifts me up. When she smiles proudly to herself I just tear up.
And the cherry on top is that she keeps calling Carmy "Jeff" throughout 😂 it started as derision and turned seamlessly into endearment ❤
Haha yes!
I love that it turns to Jeffrey in season 2, it shows the respect she now has for Carm
I love how she keeps calling him Jeffrey even in the second season, like its just a nickname
😂❤❤
I accept this series is the best culinary based series to ever be filmed. The person responsible for the soundtrack can sleep well knowing they nailed it.
I went from waitressing at a very busy restaurant to put myself through nursing school, to working on the floor. The crusty ole veteran nurses couldn’t believe a green RN could ‘run the rooms’ like I did . It was just like a restaurant, instead of appetizers -I had evaluations, entrees were meds and precedures Etc Ha !Restaurants act like it’s life and death anyway right! Can’t pick best moment it’s a beautiful thing this show
Such a good show and also such a shame some of the writers aren't making enough to meet their living expenses. I really hope this show survives the strikes and all the staff are paid fairly.
The show is really great, it went from being incredibly stressful to still stressful but more funny and optimistic, I think it’s on of the better shows on TV right now
Completely agree!
Yes, chef! Love this show so much. And having "Fishes" and "Forks" as back-to-back episodes is a perfect example of what you're talking about. Chaos with moments to breathe and recover. I loved how the people who needed the most growth (Tina, Marcus, Richie) had either entire episodes or hefty amounts of scenes dedicated to them to show that growth happen. It mirrors what Carmy is always saying about some of the best dishes he's worked on. Some dishes take multiple people and several hours or even several days to cook. Sometimes quality demands time, and that's what the show gives to each of the characters. It's lovely.
Thank you for shouting out the sound design! It’s such an important part of the show and adds so much and I feel like it flys under the radar.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes Chef. I agree that episode was truly the day The Bear was born. The show itself is addicting to watch. Just like Marcus finding his purpose in desserts. I too have found mine. In my line of employment I work at a hotel in housekeeping. But for the pass three months I've been helping the kitchen out do too low staff. But after working in the kitchen for a while now, I found my purpose in the hotel. It only took seven years for me to find it.
Hell yeah man. Congrats. So glad you found your purpose. :)
I worked in a kitchen for two years... This show was so real for me.
The stress, anxiety and high-paced "action" of a kitchen was perfectly created.
It's a brutal job, and personalities can clash. But at the end of the day, you feel like a family that can survive anything.
Yea I loved it! The bond you make when you’re all back there in the shit can be pretty strong. Worked in kitchens for 6 years from local pizza shop to high end and each one was different yet had the same basic experience
The journey of Richie is also impressive. ♡♡ I love how the show slowly revealed his personal history and brought out more of his personality (especially in S2 Ep6 & 7). I was particularly impressed with how he remained calm, positive, and cheerful during critical moments when his loved ones were under great pressure (such as how he handled the expediting in the last episode of S2). Watching Richie sing Love Story after a fulfilling workday was a memorable scene, complete with a flying car and sparks that were very relieving(*´∀`)~ ♡
Richie has the best arc in Season 2. Forks is incredible.
I knew that even though I hated Richie, his character was important as a heel to Carmy.
But i didnt know just how much id come to love him once he really understood what he wanted to do.
I consider his character arc some amazing writing.
The soundtrack really makes this show for me, it really puts you in the same head-state as the cooks when the hectic jazz comes on
Totally. Great music.
It reminds me a little of the way the movie whiplash uses it.
@@coachmcguirk6297 😂 I was thinking the same exact thing
I was unsure about the bear at first. The end of season 1 and the entirety of season 2 settled all of that. What a fucking incredible show.
Yes yes yes!
Yes chef, good choice! I remember during my first watch through season 1 that I had to pause and take a break for a few days around Brigade because the show was just so overwhelming in terms of its intensity. With Dogs I got the breather I needed and binged through the rest of season 1. When episode 7 opened and Sufjan Steven's Chicago burst on with the epic visual ode to the city I absolutely knew that this would become my favorite show of all time, the oner cemented that, and all of season 2 has vindicated those feelings.
Ditto to pretty much every sentiment you just made. The use of Sufjan Steven's song from his album Illinois was a chef's kiss.
Glad you shouted out S1E4. It’s a great episode that’s underrated IMO, but you could say that about the show itself.
I think the word is starting to get out about The Bear. It just got 13 Emmy nominations. Well deserved.
Ritchie's arc is so rewarding!!!
Definitely the best part of Season 2.
This show is so good at noticing. It's what makes the show stressful, the noticing of a clock or the sound of a ticker or the violence of a fight. It is also good at noticing the joy of a compliment, the taste of a doughnut, the shift in a tone of voice from aggressive to kindly assertive.
To me, the show started fully realised but forks is my personal favourite episode of television this year (maybe this decade).
Yeah Forks might be the best episode. Richie's character arc is fantastic.
I spent 3 years as a banquet chef which may not seem like a lot, but it was brutal BootCamp that taught me skills I still use today. After working in a kitchen, I feel like most movies and TV shows have been ruined for me because they don't depict what a kitchen is really like. The Bear and to a slightly lesser extent, Chef, are the first ones that got it right. I love this show.
People ask me what else is on Disney+ so that if they want to watch The Bear here in Canada, they have other reasons for their subscriptions. I always reply with "The Bear pays for the month's subscription on its own."
Love the insight! And hello Canada!
Yes, Chef! still holds up after all these years. The first two seasons are great TV.
I have been watching your videos since your mega hit "the day the simpsons died". I have watched every video drop since. Even if its a topic on the surface I probably wouldn't take to, I give it a watch for your thoughtful, passionate take. I can't think of a better way to describe your videos than "cozy". You have this delivery that works whether I am stressed, exhausted or hyper. i left a comment on a previous video (that you replied to) on how your videos were a source of comfort during a terrible, grief-stained part of my life. My life is much more balanced now, and I still look forward to each new video.
Wow wow wow. Love to hear this. I'm glad you've been a loyal Elk for years and years. But even more than that, I'm so happy that your life is more balanced and you're out of your grief season. Happy you're here!
The quiet moments in this show are genius.
Was gonna say, for those of us who’ve had “uncomfortable” family dinners, when did Fishes trigger your panic attack?
Oh man. This is why I don't like having quiet family dinners in my own house. Because I've seen too many examples from TV and film that just make the setting uncomfortable to me.
Very nice look at how the whole package raises the pressure and tension. I will say it's not carmy but syd who tells Marcus "if you're into it, then I'm into it"
It feels so good to see this get uploaded. I started it this past Monday and finished Season 2 last night (Thursday).
I love when the timing works out like that!
Yes, Chef. 100% agree. The character development is sublime.
Thank you Chef!
my best friend and his wife turned me on to this show and its amazing
You have good friends.
The season finale playing the same song that they played in Back Draft - also a film that capture the dark heart of Chicago
Was a wicked nice touch for those of us that noticed
If I had a nickle for every time Oliver Platt played a half-hearted antagonist in a story about Chefs, I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot- but it's weird it happened twice
Oliver Platt's character started off as this antagonistic force, but he's really changed in S2. He's one of my favorite characters on the show now. He's the harda** with a heart of gold.
My favorite comment
@@EntertainTheElk I love his character in the Fishes episode. I don't know for sure if it's the case, but him and Bob Odenkirk gave off such brother vibes in that episode, with him trying to talk Odenkirk's character down from anger. Might be my favorite character.
Yeah I think they're brothers. It's hard to get a hold of all the family and friend relationships. You gotta learn on the fly. I still don't know Sarah Poulson's characters relationship tie.
I’ve just finished The Bear and oh my, what an amazing show it is. One of my all time favorites. Great video man!
Thank you!
I totally thought there was only going to be one season of the Bear. It felt nearly perfect ending with the name change from the Beef to the Bear and I just assumed that was it. I too was worried the second season wouldn’t live up to the first but it was arguably even better. Best series around right now, for sure.
This video made me want to watch The Bear within the first 20 seconds of watching it.
So I did, and it was beautiful. Thank you, chef.
Great video, as usual.
Yay! So glad you gave it a chance and enjoyed it.
@@EntertainTheElk Hot take; Rick’s my favourite character. Did not think for 1 second after finishing the 1st episode that I would EVAH feel that way.
Incredible show. Makes me hungry when they whip up those good-looking dishes. The emotional stress they go through and put each other through is an emotional rollercoaster.
I seriously need to start watching this show. Many people have recommended it to me, and this video just seems to confirm it. Thanks for the great quality and hard work you put out in each one of your essays. 👍🏻👍🏻
If you like people shouting to each other, then sure. I personally tried twice to watch this series, and twice I bailed before the end of the first episode. I don't want my entertainment to be one massive fighting among petty people.
Thank you for the kind words!
@@EugeniaLolidifferent strokes, but I do highly recommend giving it another shot.
I hope you’ve watched it by now. It’s perfect in every way.
@@EugeniaLoliyelling at eachother for no real reason half the time either. Very awful show. Massively overhyped
I'll be that guy, i hope this only has a few seasons. I dont want this series to turn out like TWD. First couple of seasons are the grab then completely change the whole tone of the show.
Yeah, 3-4 seasons will be enough.
wow, great essay about great show, thank you! i love the bear visuals and music, end emotional lightness after tense episodes, actually i love everything about this show 💛
would love to see an analysis video about s2 or about sydney and carmy and how their characters are foils of one another / they are cinematic mirrors of one another !
I'd love any excuse to continue talking about The Bear.
Yes, chef! Just binged watched the two seasons back to back. The Fishes episode really made it all tight up with the chaotic family dynamics from the Berzatto's and also the episode with Sydney wandering Chicago was one that really stand-out the most about the food industry in that city. Can't wait to go to those places one day
Big man EntertainTheElk with another banger of a video. I just finished watching the second season of The Bear yesterday, and my god, that finale hit hard. Richie was truly the MVP of this season.
Lionel Boyce as Marcus is SOOOOO good in his role and he doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry (yet). I hope he gets an Emmy nod in July 2024.
💯💯💯
Yes, chef.
Slight correction, Sydney says” if you’re into it, I’m into it.” Not Carmen (although we know he thinks that too).
An amazing show. Would love more breakdowns of it
I'll look for any excuse to talk about The Bear more.
Great video. You really went deep and it shows. Also: as a Refused fan from way back I'm glad someone else spotted them on the soundtrack
To answer your question (without in any way denying the points that you made about Dogs etc) I think they were all perfect episodes, just in different ways.
The soundtrack does it for me 🎶and seeing how flawed all the characters are.
But somehow you still get the sense that things will turn out just fine.
Yes Chef!!! We started the first season 2 weeks ago since everyone was talking about it. We finished both seasons in 3 days. My favorite show of the year!!!!!
I enjoyed the 2nd season more because of these quiet moments. The yin to the yang
Totally. The balance was really struck.
Yes, Chef! This show is a Work Of Art to me. I just love it and I'm obsessed with it!
the bear for me feels like a safdie brothers mix with scorsese and sopranos with food and kitchen. the second season really made me fall in love with this tv show, especially cuz there was alot of slow paced type of episodes, and gave it another vibe and good emotional feelings
to the show
Yeah, I heard a lot of Uncut Gems comparisons to the pilot episode.
Yes, Chef. I also think is the best show I´ve seen in months
I've watch your videos for years deserve so many more views!
I...kind of binged both seasons of this show not long ago, and holy shit, it was so stressful.
this show is perfect right now.
It's amazing.
Yes Chef!
And I struggled getting into this show. I found the first couple episodes of season 1, so stressful and frenetic, that I stopped twice. And then picked it back up, back-tracking a bit each time. The only thing that kept me at it, was all the buzz I was hearing from people about how good it was, oh, and the Richie memes. That whole Taylor Swift singing bit was pretty much what got me to stick with it, that last time I restarted. I saw the possibility of character growth, and I wanted to stick around a see that.
So glad you stuck with it!
GREAT VIDEO MAN!
Thank you!
As soon as I heard Refused-New Noise I knew this show was going to be special. Yes Chef. This show is beautiful
Thank you chef!
I just wanted to say thank you. I watched two or three minutes of your video and thought "I should stop. This shows sound interesting. Watch it and come back." So I did. And now I have a new favourite show with the best episode of all time. Not just in this show, but really the best episode since TV show episodes exist: Forks. Thank you for that.
Great video, chef!
Thank you Chef
I don't think this show was broken or needs fixing... but certainly that addition, elevated the show
I LOVED Marcus solo episode
Yes, Chef!
Thank you Chef
Jeff. Good job 😭🤌
The episode of Marcus abroad was so beautifully quiet. It really gave me time to sit with my feelings and think about everything I was seeing on screen.
The scenes when Marcus saves the cyclist and the one where he and Luca are just chatting felt so real and emotinally significant, I had to rewatch them.
I was most of the way through s01e03, I was out, finished with this show that was nothing but yelling. If it wasn't for the birthday episode, I would haven't made it through the series.
Totally agree. I loved the first three episodes, but the high stress started to feel like one note and too much. Glad they're able to change it up from episode to episode.
This show is so good. I just hope the “stressful ep of the season” doesn’t become a THING. Where every season has to have one crazy chaotic stressful ep that’s even crazier than the last seasons one.
That could become a little too much of a “schtick” imo. But again wtf do I know. This show rules. The writers and show runners know what they’re doing.
Yeah, after backing up the 1st season with possibly an even better 2nd season, I'll trust the writers moving forward.
Beautiful review!
Forks. I still think about it all the time. The art and joy of doing a job well-any job.
Never heard of this show before but this video made me curious. I'm gonna check it out. It looks good.
Awesome! You'll probably burn through it in a day or two. It's that damn good.
Yes chef!
Heard chef
Perfect vídeo! its fire, chef
Thank you Chef!
Absolutely, chef!
"Yes, _Jeff_ !" 😉
Great comment!
Nice job chef!
Heard chef!
I haven’t even seen the Bear, but this was a jolly good video!😌
Thank you!!
Yes Chef!
Heard chef.
In defense of Tina, she has 20+ years of experience, it wasnt her ''first day'' of hard work. Sydney came off as pretentious to her, as better than.. at least she thought so not because she thought she was shitty, though that's how people treat lower income ppl, people of color, and women... There is a culture in those humble restaurants just as valid as the high end ones even if it's more home cook style. So yeah she felt intimidated by the skills and training probably too but it doesnt mean she wasnt good just cause she didnt have a institution level education
I had worked in the fiod services when i was younger and the levels of stress in the kitchen that made me realize it wasbt for me early in my adulthood was perfectly shown in the chaos..so i always wondered why they put up with it... the universe demands balance but such a mecel of calm didnt seem possible to counter the chaos of a kitchen😮
Add to that, my fiancees late husband 😢❤ was a chef, so i have heard the stories for years about the whirks if l
Being married to a chef, add to that hus early death from heart attack due tonstress and drinking from job..so it whickly became our favorite show.. anazing wroters that either know the world first hand or eoic research and writing
Sounds like they really nailed the stressful vibe of the job.
Great breakdown.
Thank you!
I want Season 3!!!
Ep 6 of season 2 is my fav
That's probably the masterpiece of the entire series so far.
I would love to see a video on " the day Xena: Warrior Princess was born / died." I love that show in college.
Never saw it. But I know lots of people who did. I'll add it to my list!
I'll have to check this out now. Sounds like a good series. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
@@EntertainTheElk I just powered through both seasons. It was excellent. Thank you!
Wow that's awesome! Glad you dug it.
Wasn't it Sidney who told Marcus, "if you're into it, I'm into it?"
Great video
Thanks!
Yes, chef!
The Bear has the best songtrack/needle drops on TV today...maybe ever.
GREAT VIDEO
Thanks!
Yes Jeff!
Yes, Jeff
I know this is a reupload but im rewatching regardless
Reupload? Not a reupload. Just changed the title and thumbnail to hopefully get more engagement.
@@EntertainTheElk wasn't hating on it. I was saying I'm gonna rewatch it anyways as your videos fill a sliver of the void that makes up my day. Keep up the good work
Yay! So glad you like my videos. Thanks for watching multiple times :)
great react!
Any commentary on Sugar and her place in this disfunction? Seeing her younger self in Fishes was a revelation but she's almost a different person in current episodes.
Chef, I’m torn between ep. 3 and your excellent dish, ep. 4.
I’ll defer to you.
Yes, Chef!
Heard chef! Have you finished the 2nd season yet????
Yes, Chef.
Yes, chef
The Bear has always remained me of a 10 years later of shameless if where Lip has grown away from his past life and has started a new one where he used to be a nobody and now a chef trying to be a somebody.
Yes chef.
Heard chef.
