I won't be swapping out my vivosmart 4 for this clunker. Garmin are still missing a trick by not having a simple, thin, light, no display Jawbone / Fitbit style band in the range. So many of us want to wear a regular dress watch while discreetly collecting health metrics to complement the data gathered from our fenix or forerunner. Come on Garmin, sort it out.
It's not their job to please everyone. It sounds like someone makes something you want. Why not buy that? I wish someone made a thin watch that would show power metrics for biking. Nobody makes it but few want that and I understand why.
This is exactly what I’m looking for in a second Garmin system! I have an Instinct 2 that I use for activities, but day to day I cannot wear it with business clothes so would like something smaller than this to collect the basics during the work week
Biggest difference between this and the Fitbit Charge 5 is the Fitbit has ECG function and colour display. However, Fitbit products I have over the years usually die in 2-3 years useage. They always give you a out of warranty discount of 25-35 % discount on a new Fitbit product but thats still not good enough in my opinion.
Fitbit charge 5 has inbuilt GPS and better screen, downsides of ourse are the subscription fee and Google. Makes this garmin Vivo more preferable even with old display type.
Des, I would love to see a video using the Vivosmart for daily wear and sleep and a fenix or forerunner for activities and see how the body battery sync together. I want to have one eco system instead of whoop and garmin.
This has Physio TrueUp so it syncs a lot of data between devices. Body battery seems to be a little quirky though for me - not necessarily perfectly in line with one another but close. I'm planning on a follow up with more info but everything else seems to sync just fine including stuff like steps, VO2 max, Fitness age, etc...

Very helpful. but I already had a garmin device and now when I want to see the app, it only goes to the golf gps app (approach 30). what is the app called for the Garmin vivosmart 5?
DCRainmaker mentioned it's hard to see anything other than time when in high sun. Really want this for zone training outdoors- so it's a big concern. Do you find this to be true?
The main data field is easy enough to see in direct sunlight but the secondary fields aren't as visible. You can however have a dedicated HR data page to display but it just shows HR and not a timer.
You can always just use the walk profile for your hike and then change the activity type after you save it to hiking in the Garmin Connect smartphone app. 👍 Thanks!
Companies usually have a small list of trusted reviewers that get early access to devices. Generally based on length of time creating reviews and also audience size. Only advice I can give is just keep on creating quality content. 👍
I feel like a sucker- bought this the other day and now I realise it’s tracking steps while I drive a car. And a lot. Totally inaccurate. Now I just need to turn it off during my work hours and … wear it. Just great. Anyone has any solutions?
All watches can register false-positive steps depending on vibrations encountered. Fitbits tend to be very sensitive to this, Garmin sort of in the middle, with Apple Watches being a bit more accurate.
Hey DesFit, do you still have the Vivosmart 5? Maybe you can test something for me, is it possible to send the heartrate data while a workout is started? -> Start a workout and go back in the menu where you can choose to start to send the HR data. Thanks in advance!

The main data field is easy enough to see in direct sunlight but the secondary fields aren't as visible. You can however have a dedicated HR data page to display but it just shows HR and not a timer.
Does anyone know if this device is recognized by MyFitnessPal?
Yes can link apps to count calories
Looking for a small band to sleep with... How is the vibration alarm strength?
Hi does the Garmin vivosmart 5 pair with a Garmin 530 , for the heart rate thanks Neal
The Alarm is it vibrating? If so is it strong enough to wake you up? Thanks
It is!
I bought it and gesture doesn’t work, which is very annoying.
Device feels like from 2017 and you will feel that Garmin forgot to update it in 2022.
Great review! I’m a bit surprised that it doesn’t have hiking menu … Venu SQ / Instincts 1 is discounted right now … so hard to choose!
You can always just use the walk profile for your hike and then change the activity type after you save it to hiking in the Garmin Connect smartphone app. 👍 Thanks!
@@DesFit thank you!! Great tip!!
Is the step counter continuous or does it update on an occasional basis?
Hey! Fellow CZcamsr here! I'm curious how you got your hands an this before it was announced. Your stuff is great btw!
Companies usually have a small list of trusted reviewers that get early access to devices. Generally based on length of time creating reviews and also audience size. Only advice I can give is just keep on creating quality content. 👍
@@DesFit I appreciate that response. Keep up the great content!
Garmin vivid smart 4
Hey i have one question since you mentioned that this one does not have built in GPS. Do i need to have my phone with me while running?
Yes
I feel like a sucker- bought this the other day and now I realise it’s tracking steps while I drive a car. And a lot. Totally inaccurate. Now I just need to turn it off during my work hours and … wear it. Just great. Anyone has any solutions?
All watches can register false-positive steps depending on vibrations encountered. Fitbits tend to be very sensitive to this, Garmin sort of in the middle, with Apple Watches being a bit more accurate.
@@DesFit I had a vivo 4 and never noticed tracking while driving. Is the 5 more sensitive to this?
Hey DesFit, do you still have the Vivosmart 5? Maybe you can test something for me, is it possible to send the heartrate data while a workout is started? -> Start a workout and go back in the menu where you can choose to start to send the HR data. Thanks in advance!
How much lasts battery when spo2 is measuring constantly?
can you see the resting time and the interval time on swimming activities?
Can you turn off Bluetooth on this tracker?
Does it capture HRV?
Does this garmin include a smart wake up alarm?
Dear Des - Does the Garmin Vivosmart 5 track stairs climbed during the day. I'm not referring to a stair climber machine, but tracking the stairs climbed in one's office, home, etc.
No it does not
I'm just curious if it can work out of the box with no app
I cannot figure out how to access setting on the device, and this video did not address that issue.
Would be better this or the whoop 4.0?
Is it possible to keep the heart rate visible continuously?
The good thing about at least Venu 2 watch, that it can be paired with Polar H10 and it is great for workouts. Does this one have such an ability?
This doesn't have external sensor suppot
Does it need any monthly subscription?
Nope!
Are you wearing the S/M band or the L band?
Great video! Any news about new forerunners?
He wouldn’t be able to say even if he knew
nice review, can you please check if I can switch off bluetooth, like on previous model?
Yup, you can disable the connection to your phone
@@DesFit thanks for response, but I am interested if I can switch off bluetooth completely. I usually get headache from bluetooth.
I just want something to wear with my analog watch, I wish there was something without display
How’s the o2 sensor accuracy?
I do Les Mills Body Pump. The weight training on Garmin Vivosmart 5 seems so complicated. Should I record Body Pump as aerobics? It's lighter weights with many reps. Thanks!
I’d suggest just using the Cardio profile for that activity 👍
I tried to use aerobics to log a tennis class, but it wanted me to put intervals. I only want it to record an hour of activity.
I hit the "X" for intervals & got what I wanted!

No GPS, a missed opportunity. Nothing new here :(
Probably more of a refinement of the 4 vs a brand new device.
Nice review, thank you!
Is it possible to connect a chest HR monitor to the Vivosmart?
Unfortunately not.
@@DesFit I appreciate you quick reply. I will then probably go with a Garmin watch like Forerunner 245 or so.
I have been watching a lot of your videos, you are true professional.
Does this show heart rate variability
