Man, I love your videos. Simple, calm, and to the point.
The best DIY I've ever seen in youtube very nice system clean and perfect I'll get one for my old truck , thanks for your clear and informatuve pricedure
realy liked it and thumbs up
If anyone is considering doing this conversion, do research first. The ePAS column is sourced from various GM cars and is easy to source and easy to modify. The "kit" shown has very few parts which are supplied to cobble the assembly together. You can work this out very easily yourself.
If you are unable to work it out and modify it yourself then really you should not be working on a steering systems in the first place. Huge safety concern.
Secondly, the ePAS system is supposed to take an input from the engine rpms's so it only draws power when the engine is running. It also takes a speed signal (either from abs or vss sensors) to auto adjust the assistance at differing speeds.
This kit gives you a cheap box (check ebay) which simple produces a pulse that connects to both these inputs. So it will flatten your battery super fast if you leave the ignition on. Takes a huge draw away from the starter motor during cranking. And has no speed variable assistance. You will constantly be fiddling with that potentiometer as your speed changes.
My advice, do research. Obtain an ePAS column and modify it yourself and put together another/proper way of supplying the varying signals. Very easily done with various circuits or use a microcontroller whereby you can program your own settings.
I have fitted ePAS to one of my Mustangs (a very custom 70 mustang convertible) and used a esp32 microcontroller to run a custom dash and provide the ePAS signal. It works great. It only works when the engine is running and adjusts the assistance at different speeds. I have even added the option of adjusting the transition speeds in a menu on my custom dash odometer display. I have taken the speed signal from a foxbody vss sensor in the speedo output of the transmission. Running this through a vr converter (dsc) converts the signal for the microcontroller to read and use, convert and send to the ePAS controller.
Total cost? Under $100.
great engineer ,great work, great way of explaination,,,,u r great Mark
Great demonstration!
I know this an old article however I noticed a weakness in this install. Regardless of whether the vehicle has power steering or not, there usually is a lot of force, weight, pressure or whatever that is put on the steering wheel/column from getting in and out of the vehicle, adjusting the seat, hanging on while going around corners, road rage etc., etc. The original steering column has three main points of attachment for the required and necessary strength. 1) The under dash mount (which seems to be the only mounting point for the EPAS system). 2) The solid one piece column and shaft that mounts to the steering box. 3) The four bolt firewall column flange.
I realize that the o/e rag joint would have some movement but it is located at the far end of the rather long steering tube/shaft and offers way more support than the universal joint being mounted just to the rear of the rather short EPAS unit. Also, the firewall steering column flange gives the original setup more strength. If you were to heavy hand the EPAS unit, the universal joint will not offer any support like the original long tube column did. The dash mounting point would be taking most of the strain and I would think that it would eventually stress, weaken and crack the dash/column support. Just an observation that I see that no one has brought up. I believe that there should be a support bracket of some sort that ties the back end of the EPAS unit to a dash crossmember or the firewall, Great product and great video though!
Hi, another watcher; I think the upper steering colum housing is retained by 4 bolts.
what an EXCELLENT video!
this was an excellent video! keep them coming.
Awesome concept. Only drawbacks I can see are that it is still using the factory steering box, and the under dash clearance.. I'd like to see it installed in a manual transmission car. I'd also like to know about the ability to couple it with a rack and pinion.
great video!!
When installing this, what else should I do to reduce my steering ratio from the loose stock 19:1 or 20:1 down to about 13:1 for nice tight steering???
Wow this is incredible
I'd like to know if this would work in my 63 Mercury Meteor. The power steering system on it is a crazy system.
Great video. How long would you say the entire process took (excluding the instruction bits)?
Just got your flyer with this system in it, looks straight forward, has a stock appearance, how many amps does the assist draw? Will I need to upgrade the charging system over the stock 65amp unit..
hi, I have a 1978 chrysler lancer, also known at plymouth arrow or lancer celeste, and im planning to convert to power steering, do you supply the EPAS KIT,
thanks
My question is what are you measuring from when you have to cut the column and the shaft? It was skipped right over on where you would take measurements.
Great video, thanks for taking us through the steps.
i have the same question. The manual says 15.5 inches from the top of the column. Seems too long though..it looks more like 15.5 from the tip of the shaft itself.
Great!!! Does it Fit on a Ford F100 1956? thank you.
The 12V when ignition is on female connector. What is that called ?having trouble finding 1 in x 3 outlets. And did you use a fuse tap to connect the one end or how did you wire it into the ignition on power?
Do you have to upgrade the alternator? How much current does it draw from the electrical system?
Yes your on to it
Great video - thank you! One question for you - In the beginning of the video you mention that you remove the driver side fresh air vent, and may modify it for better clearance, but you never show later on what modifications (if any) you ended up doing. Do you mind elaborating on that a little?
I have a 1959 3/4 ton Chevy Apache Napco conversion 4x4. Do you have or can you recommend a system for my truck?
Is there an EPAS for a mercury grand marquis 1999?
does this system tighten up the steering are far as back and forth play in the wheel. i completely rebuild the entire power steering system in my 67 and still have that slight wheel movement before the wheels actually respond. I guess what i am asking is does this kit feel the same as a factory 1967 power steering just without the hoses, leaks and pump. Or does it make it feel more like a modern car with tighter steering... more gokart like??
What ever happened to Mustang Plus? Used to be out of Stockton CA right?
I have a 67 Cougar 390GT car. It currently has the factory tilt/ tilt away column with factory power steering.
I bought a set of JBA long tube headers.
They cannot be used with factory power steering. Will this electric unit allow me to maintain my factory column with the tilt away feature?
What is the measurement of the DD and how many splines of the U-Joint that goes from the shaft to the steering box?
was the column cut 15.5 inches from the shaft or the column? If i measure from the column i need to cut down where the rubber boot is on the column. Seems too long. If i measure 15.5 from the tip of the shaft it looks more like how yours was cut.
Dear Mark,
I had the privilege of watching your presentation on installation of EPAS on a 1968 Mustang car on youtube. It was worth watching and it was extremely educative. I honestly appreciate the ability you have to present the technical process involved with the replacement of the mechanical steering to EPAS. I was keenly watching your presentation as I intend to convert the mechanical steering of my old 4 wheel Drive Willy's Jeep to EPAS. if possible kindly extend your guidance. With the best of regards.

not a sealed bearing at the firewall. Not trying to be negative here but how is this better than rack and pinion? Pretty involved install process.
Is this still available and can it be installed on the 1966 inline 6 200?
In researching steering systems for a from scratch build, I was on the Ididit site and an installation video specifically advised against drilling into and especially through the shafts. This would seem to be noteworthy information. While undoubtably many have done it this way and it will work, it is also fully understandable, why you wouldn't. If the proper coupler is available, dd, as illustrated and fits the application, then why not use it? And if it doesn't fit, have it modified( again, without compromising strength) to fit. As rod and custom enthusiasts, we all want to maintain the highest levels of safety for ourselves and those we share the roads with. Very well presented video!
They now have a kit that includes a shaft.
I just bought a EPAS System for a 66 Dodge Dart. Few questions.
Can the unit be installed at any angle?
I see most installing on the left side of the steering tube, few on the right side.
How far up the steering tube does the EPAS need to be? Can it be midway or very near the firewall?
hope to hear from you, cheers.
You can fit it on anywhere along the column. I've seen a video where the guy has it installed in the engine bay, as he had no room under the dash. So you should be good to go.
What is the potentiometer used for ?
what if you lose power? my mustang is a '70 model stroker. how is fitment? is it reliable? OK some of this explained in the video later. thanks
The loss of all steering is what I want to know. At least with fuild controled PS. You would have some turning in a complete power loss... Unless it can switch over to direct the battery some how.
Would be nice if there was a electric power steering pump for 3 quarter ton trucks but I've been searching and none exist unless I'm over looking something in the search. Maybe there isn't a strong enough electric pump that can handle a truck?
+EagleTalons1
I'm using a 2007 Saturn Vue electric power steering motor with my 88 Chevy 1 ton. Doesn't seem to strain it, and its been in for about 6 years now.
+Coty Ramsey did you hook the pump to a already existing power steering gear box on the truck? My mechanical power steering has a electric valve that controls how much pressure is needed in conjunction with turning the wheel (I think most vehicles have this), does your electric pump make the wheel feel very easy or is there some force to turn?
I have a mustang 2013, my steering wheel is very hard to turn, idk what can be wrong.. its a v6, and idk what to do..
+cynthia hernandez sell it and buy a chevy.
I'm currently running a manual Total Control rack & Pinion system. Can this unit be adapted to my system?
Ken Ashbrook It can work with the TCP system you would just have to order the correct component. I think it will not work with a tilt system. If you want more info on this contact our technician at 800-999-4289
+mustangsplus . I have a question about coupler that you put to jointe the two shafts with 4 bolting nuts. so are they strong enough I mean in any case driving without power it will holds up. I made one yesterday but i made a hole through the shaft and coupler and tighten with nut bolt
Hello,
as to the shaft on the Mustang early steering boxes, many folks have done what you did. Drill straight through. This may weaken the joint over time. How much time, I don't know. The proper way is to indent the round shaft, (drill), then then loctite the set bolts or screws firmly. This method is widely used throughout the hobby field.

Hi :)
well it is a Renault trafic van. well the shaft is round and for the coupler I installed it with 8mm nut in it I put it on van and it does work. I appriciate your work and help. good luck 👍and cheers.

I have a 1972 Toyota Land cruiser fj40, I have a medical condition that limits me in the chest and arms, I've been unable to drive my uota for quite awhile due to it not having power steering. can anyone tell me if this can be added to my fj40 so I can drive it again, thank you
you can. lots of fab work but its just a motor that attaches on the steering shaft
on my EPS, the motor bolts TO the dash
How much do you think it will cost to get power steering installed?
Contact the Restomod Shop, ask for Terry and inquire as to what they would charge. They have installed many of these units.
209-942-3013 is the Shop number.

Is the EPAS available for 87-93 Mustangs?
yes.its about 1300.
now what about tilt columns lol?
But where does the Minigun go
center the wheels when you park it. Huge current draw by EPS
What's the name of the kit?

You are correct. The fresh air box is held up to the cowl area with 1/4 in pan nuts. Once these are removed, the air box comes right out. In addition, you have to remove the 2 bolts which hold the parking brake handle. Otherwise it comes out for ample clearance. Should you decide to leave it in, then rotating of the motor assembly is more cumbersome. I probably should of at least showed it removed.

@@mustangsplus how hard was it to remove the heater blower for the install of the ECU?
QUIT SAYING WHAT YOU'RE GONNA DO AND JUST FUCKING DO IT.
Telling people not to throw away a metal tube = totally unnecessary. "I'll need that one day"
I try to be possitive about the video but it disappoint me . I exspect from such a company , a video that guides you through such install . How do I measure and what are the things to pay attention if you measure your columm. I know , measure twice , cut once. I exspect more info on such a video.
GROMMET!
looks easy but its a pain in the wazoo
It's great until you get that error message on the highway going 60. And your wheels lock up.
It will just go back to manual steering if it fails. I drive my 68 with no power steering right now..its not a big deal except parking.
Thanks for posting this video. It's too bad that you're hardly showing any actual work, just speaking about what you're going to do, and then about what you've done. Showing video of the process would've been much more valuable.
Are you kidding? This guy showed all the work he possibly could. Do you need to see him actually cut the column? It is one of the best how to videos I have ever seen.
How dumb is it to talk about the EPAS system and give a link that does not list that system. Your 1500 dollar price is ridiculous.
Love the attention to detail explaining everything to us
Great!!! Does it Fit on a Ford F100 1956? thank you.
