@DrDaveBilliards great vid and explanations... why do you think 14.1 continuous, (straight pool), arguably the best game ever created... is becoming a lost art? It teaches every aspect of the game, including sportsmanship... is it because it's too hard, or takes longer? (btw, I grew up on the game, and miss playing.. the closest popular alternative would be 'Around the World' -- N.E. of United States)
@@rdskew I’m glad you liked it. Concerning straight pool, most people find 8-ball and 9-ball more exciting and fun both to play and watch. It is faster with more strategy and interplay between the player.
@@DrDaveBilliards I agree with the speed aspect of your response, though we'll leave the more strategy and interplay up in the air... Don't get me wrong, I'll play anything, I have a passion for the process of pool, no matter the game/rules, and I'm good enough to know I suck...lol
This excerpt, in my opinion, was better than the actual Star Talk episode! Cutting out all the segments where they cut you off makes this more enjoyable to listen to.

This whole thing caught me off guard, I've been watching Neil deGrasse Tyson's 2014 show 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' recently and I've also been subscribed to your channel for quite a long time now. I love watching snooker, but I haven't played much.
Few tables here in US. I did get to play in London on 8ft tables with TINY balls, probably simulating 12ft Snooker experience. Brought my HUGE 13mm tipped cue with me and learned lots. (They play 7-9mm tips of course.) Then, felt like I went up two levels when I got back to my lovely 2.25 inch beauties at home!
I listened to this podcast last week! ✊
One thing that may help, is I noticed whether I needed a jump or masse a shot, I always start by bringing the cue up to 45degrees from the surface to aim. Then I would transfer energy at that angle using ‘draw’ from 45 degrees to jump, and ‘follow’ from 45 to masse.
I recommend your channel after anyone seeks my teachings after they shoot stick with me. I let them know you cover everything inside and out, A-Z of all the mechanics involved and implied in billiards, that the best teacher is a video because they see that it works and its just up to them to practice and apply it all vs if I'm trying to show them things that may not work right away due to something not going right and they get discouraged. Or many people that know me will share your videos they randomly come across thinking I haven't seen or don't know it's teachings.

@@DrDaveBilliards Yep, thank you! I'd also add that the fact about the force of friction vector remaining constant during the curved ball path isn't obvious. That is a really surprising result from working out the physics of it.
@@jasonparker6138 it is not intuitively obvious, but the math/physics proof is fairly straightforward.
Great video Dave. I’d have loved a discussion about the rails, and how the spring coefficient makes bank shots come up shorter as one shoots harder. Also, I’m sure there have been changes in the composition of the rails over time, but I know virtually nothing about that topic.

The line the ball will follow after it's done curving is the same as the one you draw between.. the resting point of the ball and the point on the cloth where the cue aims? Another way to understand and visualize what is happening to a spinning object is to study force vectors and especially gyroscopic precession. Left and right english impart almost the same forces as high and low english, the only difference being the friction caused by the cloth. Imagine turning the cue 90 degrees along the longitudinal axis of the cue to go from side to top and bottom and any degree in between. As to the "gripyness" of the leather to the ball and between the balls themselves, not just friction but also elastic modulus comes into play. High quality phenolic balls compress and grip each other totally differently than cheaper balls made from "affordable" resins like polyester or other resin blends. That is the main reason "affordable" balls do not impart english, or throw, like phenolic balls do. Think of phenolic balls as super incredibly hard rubber rather than an uncompressible solid. Also, massé is a French word that is pronounce like a blend between messy and Massey. Think messy Mike Massey!
Technically, there is no gyroscopic precession with pool balls since the moments of inertia are the same about all 3 axes. However, the spin access does change direction during a shot. Here's a good illustration:

Regarding linguistic use of "english," I've heard it said that while Anglo cultures refer to "French" kissing, the French in fact refer to the same method of kissing as "English" kissing. I'm not certain of the reference for that, but it seemed reliable to me when I noticed it some years ago.
Also in Snooker they dont say "english".. They say a swerve shot.

Dr. Dave i have a question about factors that affect cue ball control, does the straightness of the cue make the shot more accurate? And how to check if the cue is straight.
Cue straightness is an issue only if you twist your wrist during a stroke, which you should not do.

It is his show, so I guess he has that right. But I agree that sometimes his "interruptions" can be unsettling at times.
I have a very interesting question for you guys, the topic is draw stroke i firmly believe draw a stroke is more than the speed of the cue stick when it strikes the object ball, I believe a great deal of draw stroke can be attributed to Chinese Chee,My answer for this why do you have to practice draw a stroke at all if you hit the Q ball on the bottom and follow through that should be all that's necessary, but when you do it with a physical stroke machine which is perfect speed and follow through you don't get a damn thing why

Well stated. Agreed. The Internet used to contain mostly accurate and useful info. Unfortunately, in current times, the amount of misinformation and bad “opinions” is quite disheartening.
There is TONS of it, even on YT, just look around. There are talks about science, math, physics, and about every other topic from guys actually doing the leading edge work, in some cases. Sometimes you practically need a PhD to understand some of it, but there is always interesting information. If you want an excellent channel from a guy (engineer) who delves into differenct science and general questions to amazing depth at layman levels try Veritasium. A lighter touch comes from Smarter Every Day, if you can stand the accent.

I was 1 semester shy of a math degree at SUNY Buffalo--I loved differential equations once it all clicked and I remember the day it did. A true AHA moment from God herself!!! No Maple for me. Give me a pen and paper, lol. Strangely, although I started playing pool years before university, I was never able to sync my mathematical understanding with my game. I did stop playing regularly for some years during and after college, but I have been back at it for a few now. I always relied on my aiming ability for cut shots rather than the complexities of english and banking and now everything is really starting to meld nicely along as evidenced by my developing gameplay; but not without the help of Dr. Dave's and a couple others' video instructions (and my real-life mentors and practice of course.) I digressed but this video was certainly fun. Also, I will be Project Gutenberging that 1800's billiards book since it's free and I'm broke 😫😂. I will be most definitely getting the good Dr.'s book as well. I think it is super important to bring practicality to mathematics for elementary and high school students especially, as the general consensus among many if not most seems to be math is boring, hard, impractical etc. and using the pool table to do it could make mathematical and scientific principles both relatable and fun. Anyhoo...why am I typing all this at 3 AM?

I was flabbergasted by the Coriolis' aiming system, I want to believe that it holds in a limit for small values psi so the trigonometric functions can be approximated to a Taylor series.

I love pool. It's a sport where you can be lucky but it's impossible to be unlucky. You can accidentally pot a ball but if you miss that same shot, no matter how difficult, it's your fault and nothing else can be at fault.
The better you are, and the more you practice, the luckier you get.
@@DrDaveBilliards Yeah, I always love it when people say, ‘Efren says he was lucky so I can be lucky too’. What they don't realize is he's only lucky because he succeeded at something he didn't expect after years of practice. You shouldn't hear him say he was unlucky when not making a shot because if he does, it means he didn't practice enough to understand why he failed.
It's geometry with rounded edges (think of a coat hanger) and there is a solution to every possible table and because there is perfection sitting on every table, it means it's only the individual that determines the fate of the table. What I mean is, if every table has the ability to be run, it means there is no unlucky table or shot. Only people that haven't gained the ability to be perfect at that moment. I expanded that ideology from Howard Vickery who I used to play at a place called Fats (RIP) here in Cbus

Dave, if you haven't seen them Venom has a series of a few vids doing trick shots sans cushions, silly, but fun. He also did a couple with rails on, cushions cloth free. You absolutely would not believe how balls 'dance' around then. Think induced and reactive rail English dot ten, or is that CROSS ten? :-) In case you are lazy (there is engineering in your class titles, right?) here is a link:

Question, I've always wondered how billiard balls were shaped into perfect spheres hundreds of years ago?
I'm not sure, but probably a similar way as now ... a combination of lathes and spherical grinding (manual with fixtures instead of computer controlled).

Dr dave make videos in spanish. Spanish pool channels dont are well understanding and dont do videos about back hand spin or other stuff
FYI, on a desktop computer, you can view subtitles in any language by clicking on the closed caption (CC) icon at the bottom of the video. Then click on the Settings (gear) icon and select the language you want under "Subtitles/CC."
