      Hey Dr Dave I'm having a serious issue here. I have a ignite shaft by mezz with a super soft tip by kamui, and I have some pool sticks that came with my pool table with really hard generic tips on them.
      These generic pool sticks are a millimeter thicker in diameter and when I stroke them it literally feels like they are stuck in a machine and stroke straight. It's hard to take them offline whereas with the mezz cue I have to work very hard to keep it straight and it's near impossible to get a center ball hit consistently.
      I'm leaning towards getting a harder tip but it still doesn't explain why it feels so much better stroking a house cue then the cue paid so much money for. Very disappointing and frustrating.

    I put the cue ball on the spot, a golf tee on the middle diamond on the far short rail, took my stance, lining up the cue with the tip at center CB, and the shaft directly over the near short rail middle diamond. I looked up at the golf tee, it seemed an inch to the left of where I was aiming, even thu I knew FOR SURE that I was aiming DIRECTLY AT IT! I moved my head left and right, until it looked like the cue was pointing at the tee. That found my visual center, left side of my nose. Then, ran 15 balls, then 6 balls in order! Big step for me. I watch your videos regularly and noticed you have a low average of a couple thousand likes per video with few exceptions, as far as I can see. If that’s true, it shows that very few people is watching your high quality teaching videos regularly, or not liking them! Your videos helped me tremendously and made me a better player altogether but this lack of seeking for quality material to learn from will keep most down! I’m in the process of opening my own pool hall in Athens Alabama called limestone legends billiards (on Instagram and Facebook) and over the years I’ve always watched your videos as well as read books and other materials from professional players. But the thing that’s help my game the most was the things you’ve mentioned in this video. I’ve tried a lot of different stances and techniques. But the things I have found to be the most helpful have been doing what was natural and comfortable to me in my stance and stroke. Unless you start at a young age practicing with a “professional style” stance and stroke it’s almost useless and puts you backwards on your current game. And practice practice practice!

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před 3 lety +1

    OK, hadn't heard that one before, but now that you say it it doesn't really surprise me all that much. What probably really matters is what your visual cortex gives you for a 'view'. Interesting. Now I have some work to do. I will let you know.
    My favorite shot in pool is anytime I see the intended shot DROP. :-) Your pull back less to shoot softer is one tip that REALLY helped me. I swear by it, which is better than AT it.
    I'm definitely going to implement your 'laser sight' on the slower drop process, that looks like it would be very effective.

    I definitely have this problem where my cue tip pops upwards on the stroke, which is especially noticeable when cueing off the cushion. I will try to get that pendulum elbow thing going a bit more.
    I also still have the problem of doing most of my aiming while in the down position and find it very difficult to aim accurately while standing. The problem is I've put so much work into improving my accuracy in the down position. Aiming while standing feels like going back to square one.

But unfortunately, I still wasn't able to practice/play billiard due to very, very serious COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. The total infected cases are 1,685,510!! The recreational activity places throughout Malaysia are closed on the order of the government. And it's been about 4 mounts since I haven't played pool.

    I dunno Dr D. Looks like all you needed to do was change shirts and each shot improved ;-). BTW the straight rear leg stance originates from Snooker. It provides a solid foundation supporting most of your weight while the either leg is used solely for balance. This stance won't waiver under fatigued leg muscles from long matches. Bent knee stances are definitely more susceptible to fatigue most especially if you stay down on the shot for a long time during exhausting matches. Certainly some people lack the body flexibility to use that stance. Typically, if you are suffering pain but have good flexibility, then the stance is not being done correctly. I switched from a free-style stance to a snooker stance which took more than a minute to adjust to but it dramatically improved my shot making! Cheers!

      I have tried every variety of pool and snooker stances over the years. What I have settled on works the best for me personally. My legs are strong from lots of biking, so I don't have any trouble with fatigue, even if I video record or play all day. Also, my "athletic" knee-bent stance feels even more stable than the traditional snooker stance. It certainly feels more comfortable.

    • @GreenThumb121
      @GreenThumb121 Před 3 lety +1

      @@DrDaveBilliards There is a bunch alright, but only one that I’ve found is thorough and systematic; however, it pertains to Diamond tables with built-in slate and leg adjustments ( czcams.com/video/eidA1AwYt_E/video.html ). It would be very helpful to have a video from your science and engineering perspective. I can see that it is very challenging to go from observed off-level measurements and ball roll-off trajectories to specific slate and leg adjustments using shims and wedges to achieve an overall table level condition. A desirable condition would be no ball roll-off more than ¼ ball width over the length of the table. We have been through this with two new 5 X 10 ft. snooker tables at our senior center over the past four years. The failure to get a Riley Aristocrat table properly leveled led to acquisition of its replacement with an Olhausen Hampton model installed without achieving a level condition as good as a full ball width roll-off after a couple days efforts. This was just before the COVID pandemic shutdown, March, 2020. It was recently serviced with a new replacement slate, but still not getting an acceptable overall level condition; some areas have more than a ball width roll-off over the table length. The middle slate was dislodged significantly during these adjustments so a follow-up retry at leveling is planned for September. Watching these failures with new tables and different experienced people doing the installations gives me the impression that there has to be a more logical and systematic approach identified to doing the table set up and leveling. You have done so much with your detailed analyses of all things related to pool, and put together such valuable videos, it would be great to see your assessment and recommendations of pool and snooker table leveling procedures in a video. All billiards games are so much more enjoyable with good equipment and a level table has to be the most important equipment item.

  • @cosmicraysshotsintothelight

    Interestingly, I usually shoot up over the table a couple feet so I look down on and over the shot from there, rarely down on the cue stick. But always with both eyes centered over the stick and my strokes. Oddly, I 'see' and shoot my long table banks left handed more accurately (when one is stuck near the rail with the wrong handedness). I never "go behind my back" and shoot. All my life I immediately switch hands and learn to gain confidence left handed. I think the brain processes the shot slightly differently though, or the shot/aim/stroke combined control. But I am unorthodox anyway at this point. I also shoot better when I am shooting left handed with my air bridge than with a table prone bridge. There is an example of one of my "lean back" strokes where instead of switching hands or doing a behind the back thing, I just lean out over the table (with my back to it) and overhand stroke the shot. It only works for short CB to OB in-the-pocket-already jabs.
    I did one of my lean back shots here: studio.czcams.com/users/videoWr4ejfbj9-4/edit I figure I can straight stroke in any position. :-) A good confidence to have, even if it is unattainable. Well... maybe Ronnie O'Sullivan. That guy can shoot. 2" balls are a bit different though. (or is it 2 1/8?) (even harder to shoot right)

    Great point about stance. Any tips on how to deal with slight variations in table height in pool halls? That tends to mess up the ideal stance (at least for the first few minutes of play).

      I haven't noticed any variation in pool table height before. Have you taken measurements? I'd be curious to know how much variation you have seen.

    • @raymondgirardtan4978

      Using my cue, I've seen variations of close to an inch within the same pool hall.

      @@raymondgirardtan4978 I don't think most people would notice such small changes in height, and they would easily and subconsciously adjust their stance (feet position, knee bend, or waist bend) a tiny amount. Even wearing different shoes (or no shoes) can create a similar height difference.

    Hi! Dr. Dave I have tremors when playing pool. Do you have any suggestion to lessen or stop the tremor?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před rokem +1

      I am not that kind of doctor. I have a PhD in mechanical engineering, not an MD in medicine. Regardless, many people play at a high level with a tremor (Nick Varner comes to mind). I think the best advice is to ignore it and just do the best you can.

    Would you recommend the centre cue extension over a butt extension? What do you use?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před 3 lety +1

      I use a "Balance Rite" joint extension only because it was the length I wanted to add for all shots since I am tall (6'3"). I also use my Predator butt extension periodically when I need to reach long shots on a 9' table (so I don't need to use the mechanical bridge).
