- In this week’s video, Tim shares what we’re learning from The Big IF Study about your snacking and diet habits, as well as how many of you have a lie in and whether you should be catching up on sleep at the weekend or not! These great insights are from the Lifestyle survey you completed at the start of the study. He also looks at the latest COVID data, as cases continue to fall, plus what’s happening with colds which are on the rise.

I have to keep getting up to the loo at night, don't get much continuous sleep.
Welcome back Prof Spector! - Hope you had a good break. Interesting to learn about the IF study. Great to hear so many are participating. Regarding Covid v Colds, I shall say I have heard of many who have been struck with a bad cold - Hoping to avoid both! Thank you for your bulletins on all Zoe study matters. So glad this platform exists to help science.
I found it extremely easy to stick to the 10 hour window, because I can choose whne I do it. Really happy to be involved. Great to hear some of the preliminary results. Keep up the good work Tim and team.
It’s funny, if I have breakfast, within a 10 hr window or not, I get ravenous for the whole of the day… better for me - (no snacking!) if I simply don’t eat anything until early afternoon. Then I normally manage a 5 or 6 hr eating window. Feeling great!
Breakfast is the least important meal of the day. When you wake your body gives you a shot of cortisol and glucose, so you do not need to eat and slow down your system. Most people have carbs which spike insulin and evnetually drop blood sugar under normal - then you get hungry. That's why ketones can be better, especially when you want to control or loose weight. Skip breakfast - its for wimps!! :)
I’m not sure if this is what you’re saying. But if I don’t have breakfast I don’t feel hungry and can wait until lunch.
Yep, that’s right. I’m the same. Don’t really know how it works or why.
If I leave it too long before having a first meal, then I get a raging headache after eating- no matter the content. Eating about 2 hours after rising is best for me in the main
It would be really interesting to see what is the reason for these individual differences. It’s probably an important part of the whole nutrition puzzle
Enjoying doing this- am in the third week now. And I lost 6 pounds through keeping my carbs low I think though iI wasn’t expecting to lose weight.I’d encourage everyone to do it , it’s easy and interesting😊😊
I am sort of on the mid TRE because I am always finished completely before 19.00 and for the majority of the time have been on a 9 hour window. Of course this is happening quite naturally because I am not stressing about it, and, consequently I'm finding it really easy to do. I'm also finding my IBS bloating has improved significantly as has my sleep. I tend to get up around 6am and go to bed earlier, I got a French Press because I like real coffee black with no sugar and, I would imagine, that will knock off a few calories too. I have already extended my participation twice and am happy to carry on for as long as its useful for us to keep logging.
Such an interesting listen always so informative. Thanks Prof Tim
I find your podcast so encouraging … especially I just end very bad acute bowel crisis….I like your way of teaching…
it’s very calming…It’s the first time I get to start to understand about the microbiome and how we could try t

we are…you’re very respectful for your listeners…I’ll do as if I’m in the ZOE’s study trying to put in practice your
good suggestions.. Thank you for your help….
I'm enjoying doing this and finding it quite easy to stick to a 10 hour window ending at 6.30pm. My normal snacking time would be 8-9pm so I'm now eating very few snacks because they all have to be eaten in my eating window and I generally don't want snacks between meals, only lateish evening. I'm not missing the snacks so far. Thanks Zoe 👍🏻
I forgot to mention that my main meal is near the end of my eating window at around 5.30pm.
I've been doing the IF study for 42 days now. I think it would be very helpful for your studies to include sleep in the questions. As I find, like most people I'm sure, that on days when I have not slept well, I am incredibly hungry and my energy and mood levels are very low.
I have recently started monitoring my sleep pattern and find deep sleep to be the most beneficial. I am going through a few health issues at the moment and have had to sleep in an electric reclining chair for the past week. Not for the first time, I hasten to add. I sleep on my back all night and fall into the deepest of sleeps. I may not sleep any longer than normal but I feel so much better the next day. And no stiff joints when I wake up. Even the waking stiffness in my knuckles have gone so I'm wondering about a link between my lack of deep sleep and inflammation. It's possible an electric adjustable bed may be better for me, a lot of people swear by them. I also tend to succumb to the temptation of junk food when I am tired. I've been intermittent fasting on and off for a few years, sometimes OMAD and occasionally keto, and it has helped me to lose weight. It can be hard to stick to but never thought about linking it with sleep pattern.
I thought I would find the IF diet really easy, but, although I normally have a midday breakfast, I really missed the milk in my early morning tea, and the biscuit and piece of banana, which normally keeps me going during the 3 hours between waking and breakfasting. I found I was really grumpy in the mornings as a result!
I followed a strict intermittent fasting/low carb/no breakfast diet for several years with great results. I’ve recently had to go back to a “normal diet” after starting co-careldopa. My energy levels have reduced, I’m now always hungry, craving carbs and stay up later. Hopefully I can resume intermittent fasting again soon..
You might be interested to look up functional medicine dr Mark Hyman and his approach to medical issues such as yours. He believes food is Medicine, (I don’t think The professor is quite there yet) and maybe what you eat is more important than when for you, for now. BUT since fasting promotes autophagy if you can get a decent rest from digestion so the body can get on with healing and “cleaning house” you will be doing your body a big favour 😊
Thanks Tim much appreciated 👍
I suspect in evening people more likley to watch TV and like to snack as they watch so behavioural or due to associating snacking with activities such as TV watching and or to accompany an evening beer or a wine
so interesting, thank you tim
I’m not sure that eating breakfast “stops you snacking”. Isn’t it more likely that if you miss breakfast your eating window will be open into the evening giving the possibility of evening snacking, whereas if you eat breakfast your window closes early evening so you can’t then snack?
I wasn’t able to participate in the IF study as I had already started doing it a few months ago after doing some research on it.
Long story short - used to be very fit, healthy and a healthy weight, developed hypothyroidism following glandular fever (gf virus known to attack and destroy thyroid gland), was misdiagnosed with M.E. for 17 years and in that time put on a LOT of weight (more than 6st).
Tried everything to lose weight without success. Due to the fatigue I can do very little exercise and at times even starved myself in an attempt to lose weight but somehow ended up putting on even more weight. Also had problems with a lot of fluid retention.
Started the IF by having dinner around 6pm then not eating until around 11am next day (brunch) then dinner. Do this Monday to Friday. On Saturdays I eat breakfast and dinner then normal breakfast/lunch/dinner on sundays. Also stopped eating bread as I suspected I may have a yeast intolerance (which I suspect was causing a lot of the bloating and fluid retention (which has now gone)).
I’m about 3 months in and have lost just short of 2 stone! In the past I have gone months of eating less than half what I’m eating now without losing any weight, so for me the IF really works!
This is terrific news, so happy for your progress via TRE (time restricted eating). I bet your energy will start looking up as well 🎉
@@eugeniebreida1583 thank you ☺️
Energy levels fluctuate a lot but I definitely find I have more energy when I eat very little so obviously a lot of food intolerances going on (also very bad IBS and suspected bile acid malabsorption) but again by eating less my symptoms have improved slightly. I shall keep going as it obviously works for me! (46 F)
@@jiylees Keep going! And think about avoiding entire sections of foods for a week or two, to see if you notice vast improvements. I think that 'bread' thang is problematic (ALL flours turn to sugar f a s t in the gut, all of them.). I would try 2 weeks w/no grains at all (rice/oats/wheat/barley) along with NO sugar.
Following two weeks try to zero out dairy as well (keeping the others out).
Then reintroduce ONE thing at a time - for a week, to see if it (dairy?) causes distress.
Eggs are another likely upset maker - you could these with dairy, or not, but would make the test more thorough/accurate.
GOOD LUCK! I still have not figured it all out, but my gut is pretty happy on grassfed meats, organic produce, and a few nuts/avocado (some are allergic to either/both of these), a half a banana here and there (very high sugar, caution!!). : )
@@eugeniebreida1583 thank you for taking the time to reply and offer advice.
Over the years I’ve tried many complete exclusion diets including the low fodmap but been unable to pinpoint any aggressors. In fact I was actually a lot worse during my 12 weeks on the low fodmap! I’m a very unique creature! 😂
So many times I’ve thought I’ve nailed it with things such as onions, garlic and lots of others but that have then proven to not be the case. My guts are SO unpredictable. The only thing that alleviates my symptoms is simply not eating 😒
I think my main issue is bile acid malabsorption (my brother who has all the same symptoms got a positive test result for BAM). I do take a a bile acid sequestrant which helps a lot but unfortunately I can’t take on a regular basis as I also take thyroid hormones (bile acid sequestrants affect the absorption of thyroid hormones).
Sugar is definitely my enemy - I know that for sure and so I avoid it as much as my will power allows 😉
Tim, will your data show incidences of co-infection with one or more the viruses that are currently circulating? As well, can you tell if successive infections of one or more viruses have any impact on severity of disease? That would be so interesting. Thank you for your work.
I never ever snack mom trained me that way gave up sugar for the most part years ago fasting is my life
I accidently got into IF 8 years ago as I began an early morn job I was unable to eat so I ate later in morn and was then gradually pushing my fast window to 15 hours daily.
I find 5/2 suits me. I snack on a few toasted seeds through the day, occasionally toasted hazelnuts.
Yes I thought as much. Now I have little kids and wake up early I don’t eat as many snacks. I’m really enjoying the IF study
Really? Having little kids has made me eat MORE for stress relief. 😅
I have just finished the three weeks. The main problem I had following the 10 hour window related to attending Social functions on varying days. Sometimes I had to skip breakfast to fit in with an evening social dinner and sometimes I had to finish very early in the day meaning some periods on some days I was fasting for 18 hours.
I find it difficult to stick with 10 hours between eating. I tihnk next week I need to change my morning routine to have breakfast at work instead to break it up. - I've noticed that esting later helps give me energy throughout the day
Great to hear the results but I wonder where they are coming from please? I am contributing but am only asked basic questions ie mood, hunger nothing about sleep, snacks etc?
I’m into week 4 now and have discovered my blood pressure has dropped. My GP has had me monitoring for a while due to high BP so I can see how it’s reduced. Coincidence?
I would absolutely love to join the Big IF study. But I live in Australia. Is there any chance it might be available here in the near future ?
Hi Prudence, if you haven't as yet - you can register your interest in the study by filling out your details in the signup form on our Big IF page. We’ll keep you updated if the study becomes available in your country. You'll find the form at the bottom of this page: health-study.joinzoe.com/intermittent-fasting Thanks!
Do the team worry about the accuracy of the data people enter? Even trying to be honest, I know I don't always get it right, and certainly some entries are guesses. Does that skew the data significantly?
I have big trouble remembering yesterday, so I just make a note of start and finish eating times. It would be hopeless to be even close to accurate if I relied on my memory!
I've found the IF period a bit of a challenge as I have a tendency to comfort eat especially during the night when I can't sleep. Annie
Try Micheal Sealey hypnotism CZcams video. He is great for getting to sleep.
Surely as Breakfast is breaking your fast it is the first meal after a nights sleep whenever you eat it and you can't "skip" it unless you don't eat at all that day.
Rather than 'skipping breakfast', maybe they could call it 'not eating in the morning at the traditional time for breakfast' for clarity?
It’s true I do snacking late evenings. IF🎉 best in the world no sugar and no carbs. 🎉🎉
I used to eat two meals a day, considering my first meal the main one when I joined the study. I'm on my 4th fasting week. I still eat once or twice a day but I have found I'm craving much more high carb foods and the quantity of my snacks have increased drastically. My weight has been going up and down as a result, instead of the fairly steady fall (with plateaus) that I expected the way before I joined. Although I drink herb teas daily anyway, not having that milky tea at the start of the day and during the day (as a snack/lunch replacement) have been the hardest part of the study.
I going to do a water fast what are your thoughts,I have cut out meat and next week having a week of juice before the big fast 30 days
There's a German saying that you should eat like an animal (a lot) in the morning, eat like a human (less) at noon and skip dinner. I'm not so sure about skipping dinner completely, but I find it easier to avoid over eating and snacking later in the day, when I've had two good solid meals as breakfast and lunch.
I feel there needs to be more about other influences on food and type of calorie intake? Mood, anxiety, sleep & hormones?
Do you mean between people eating fresh food versus processed food?
@@travelwell6049 no. I mean the intensity of eating can be affected by mood, anxiety, lack of/too much sleep and hormones. Some will turn to high sugar/fatty foods. Some not.
What's the experience for those with irregular work schedules? I have different shifts every week with a start between 6.0-10.0 mostly at a partly physical job (usually at the beginning of the shift, but not always). Basically I never know when I can eat.
I really liked IF when I had a regular job, but I am a bit lost with this new job. Any advice?
I really want to do IF but I really really struggle with the feeling of hunger. I also have young children so constantly feel stressed and eating has always been my comfort.
The less carbs you eat the less you will feel hungry. And eat healthy fat, like olive oil, cheese, smetana. Eggs is a life saviour and coffee. 😅
The hunger comes from carbs, specifically blood sugar spikes then crashes from refined carbs. This is covered in other Zoe episodes. IF works best for most people when you focus on getting more protein and healthy fats than carbs, to keep you feeling full. I followed Michael Mosley’s Fast 800 diet for 6 weeks calorie restrictions, but two years later I still follow the IF and low carb elements of the diet, it just clicked for me. I used to have real wobbly moments, even dizzy spells from blood sugar crashes, since I was a teen, I thought the answer was to eat more often, little did I know eating less was the answer, thirty years later I feel amazing.
Will the IF study open for people in the USA?
I'm doing IF study. Not aware of having given details about snacking, sleeping etc so where are these facts coming from. Concerned I'm missing giving info.
Most of this data is drawn from the lifestyle questionnaire completed in advance of the study
Your statistics showing a sudden uptick in my area ⬆️ 7523 from last week. I’m struggling as I’ve come down with a bad cold over the last week so not managing the 10 hr slot. I’ve never been a snacker and generally consume two meals a day. Which hasn’t changed with my illness. Sorry I’ve not managed to fit them in with in the 10 hrs.
I had phone problems after signing up and can't find any way can restart. Very frustrating.
I do IF anyway. I don't eat breakfast and don't get hungry before my main meal. But it took a couple of years to get to that point.
Hi Tim, I'm interested in your data about incidence of colds v Covid. Are 'colds' people with cold-like symptoms but negative RAT? It seems that in the UK (and anecdotally in Australia) the 'colds' are particularly severe. My understanding is that it might be possible for different strains of Covid to exchange RNA, so could a Covid variant exchange RNA with the cold virus to make a hybrid form that tests negative on the RAT? Just an idea.
A 10 hour eating window seems short for IF. While it is a good start I was under the assumption that more substantial benefits start between 14-16 hrs of fasting. I always skip breakfast, and do not snack during my fasting window. It is all what you are get used to.
I don't understand this.
I am on the IF study, and I have not been asked any question about snacking, size of meals, or sleep patterns.
It would be really interesting to know if there is any correlation between the mid fastest and disturbed sleep versus those who seem to be having improved sleep patterns
I'm not asked about sleep patterns. It seems that there must be a glitch somewhere. You are commenting on sleep and snacking and I am not getting questions on those topics.
@@sarahwestwood6695 there are lots of comments on the FB page about people’s sleep patterns being disrupted. You can report these by clicking on the Not feeling my usual self button and reporting them there
This data was from the lifestyle survey you completed before starting the Big IF study
Not everyone is on Facebook!!! Horrible site
cannot find the habit tracker. App appears to be up to date last update 21.12.22 - it shows the blog but not how to apply the habit tracker
What does TRE stand for
How do you know that people are snacking more or when and how much they’re eating? I’m on the survey & not being asked any of these questions when I fill it in every morning
I was wondering that too. Have you had any answer? Thanks.
@@linz716 Nope 🤷♂
Hi there, this information is gleaned from the lifestyle survey you completed as part of your registration for the Big IF study
@@joinZOE Ah, so when the survey completes then people answer the same survey hence how this data is generated? I have rolled over now for three weeks so haven't hit the end yet. Thanks
Agree - I've not had any questions apart from the very start as to what I eat, if and when I snack, quality of sleep etc...
Ive been doing this IF study for 30 days plus but it only asks , if i feel like my normal self, hunger level, energy level, mood level and times. Seems quite a few others have the same app and limited info to put in. If we are not all putting in all the information how can you give details of what has been learnt overall, surely this invalidates this study?
Not sure what the point of a generalised study is. You cannot assert causality from stats like this. Just because most night birds are snackers does NOT make it more likely for YOU. If you want to try IF, you are going to have to choose a method that works for your lifestyle regardless of any of the findings of this study. I decided to choose OMAD - one meal per day. Skipping breakfast is easy because of the "dawn effect" where your body supplies you with energy and cortisol first thing. Waiting it out for as long as possible before eating gets me to 3pm usually where I busk on low carb (meat, eggs, chese and fish) , and green veg eating to satiety. With this method lost 45lbs, stopped 3 medications; lowered my Triglycerides, A1C, ended my fatty liver, raised my HDL. No more athletes foot and toenail fungus (weirdly), loss of skin tags on neck; end to bloating and nocturnal wind. Better breathing. No more heart pain from (CAD). Read Jason Fung's "Complete Guide to Fasting" for an upbeat friendly book to get you interested.
I read that anything less than 12 hours IF is pointless because that’s how long it takes to fully use up any calories gained from eating?
I finished the 3 weeks and was very happy to stop. The 10 hour window fed (no pun intended) into my food obsessions but mainly I missed milk in my early morning tea and late night decaf tea. I was rather grumpy as other contributors have stated and saw no positive benefits.
Why did you dring decaf? Drink real and good coffee in stead! 😅 And drink coffee, not tea! In the morning.
Can we in the US participate in the IF study?
I get up when my cat tells me to.
I don’t remember the last time I ever woke up naturally.
When I first joined I was already doing OMAD and followed this up with a 5 day fast so logged eating window to 1 min as there was no option for none. I am now back to OMAD cooking from scratch low carb, no processed food. So finding it very easy atm. I’ve chosen to eat after 6pm no later than 8.30pm
It’s now thought that shorter daily fasts are better, was listening to Walter Lungo very recently (on a Rich Roll podcast that popped up on my YT feed) and he thinks 12-14 hours is plenty. I usually default to 16 hours fast, just because I get busy in the day, but will be making a conscious effort to set more regular meal times, and close the window sooner before bed for better sleep.
I found this hard to keep up. I was eating between 9 and 7 but found it hard to avoid eating for two hours after getting up. I would prefer to eat an earlier dinner but I don’t want to cook separate meals for my husband who doesn’t get home in time for that. I snacked less but ate a lot at meal times as I was worried about being hungry.
You can eat a big breakfast, a moderate lunch and a very light dinner. Why not just salad, but still eating with your husband?
Do people snack in the evening just because they can? During the day, we are busy. In the evening, we are less active and snack in front of the tv
I have just caught Covid - for the 3rd time. Ist time was last February (before any vaccine) 2nd time was last November (before my 1st Booster). I had my 2nd booster in late September this year..Which variant am I likely to have caught this time? And did my vaccine offer me any protection at all?
Probably not! Protection from boosters was shown to begin waning weeks after being taken. Any protection you had was likely from previous infections
Where/how may I ask a(nother) question?

Lying in would correlate with fatigue and more insulin resistance I imagine.
I found it hard to follow, esp. after a stress day at work, there's a habit of chilling with a beer, then getting the munchies later in the evening. This may be related to multiple factors: more activity, less carbs consumed during the day, stress and habit. It's hard to disentangle all those effects, and the differences in mood & hunger levels which I feel to be more dominated by those other factors (e.g.: Correlate with step count & stress level?)
Maybe have a bigger lunch?
Or a protein shake at work on a stressful day.
i haven't been asked by the app about my snacking since I started. where is that data recorded each day?

I have been on the Zoe app on my ‘phone since you started. But why have you restricted the App only to those with Mac 11 or later? I am 75 years old and have an older Mac. By requiring 11 or later you are stopping people like me participating in the IF study (on the bigger screen of our Macs). . :(

Are cause and effect sometimes reversed? Example: Asperger people may feel more comfortable working alone when it's quiet, and that may cause them to be night owls. Snacking could be for other reasons?
Stats do not imply cause. T Specter is wrong to suggest that. It's just bad science.
What is TRE
find that putting data in the next day is much more difficult and less accurate than putting data in ON the day.
I couldn't find how to put snacks in.
NOR my normal diet, nor data on change in symptoms.
Didn't find how to put. meal size etc in. Again - that would be much easier on the day.
have the app on my iphone.
Writing this as I am listening to your video - I really couldn't find how to put meal sizes, types, sleep pattern etc in?
Am I missing something ?
Also couldn't go back and change something that was clearly incorrect. Eg putting in 10.30 rather than 22.30 which gave an eating time of 23 hours!!! When in fact it was 11 hours!
Also, I really do not need to lose weight. do tend to eat live yoghourt and high Plant diversity.
No idea how you managed to get that data or how I could add that data.
i agree , my app doesnt have snacks/sleep /meal sizes etc as options.

As a night owl, I know I snack more.
Interesting to hear correlations with sleep times and snacking but I don’t recall being asked about these.

My digestion is definitely worse if I don't stick to a shorter eating window, and a low carb diet helps with this as I'm more satiated. I've never had COVID as far as I know. If it's linked to metabolic disease I'm guessing that a low carb diet could be protective.
My weight goes haywire if I eat after 8pm - I am happier if I have 12 -14 hours without eating
I am not being asked about meal size! Am I missing something? I am on day 24.
I am not reporting what I eat either!
2years ago I did 3-4 months I.F. Window 8hres for meals…..you can never eat as much within 8hres as you would do
on regular 3 meals per day that most people do….and you’re not hungry….I thought the least I eat…the least I’m hungry…
Than I started to understand my son’s niece. who suffer from anorexia….we feel so much better…and think sharply
while fasting…life is so much easier and we could do many more things while fasting….although you come back on this
earth and eventually have to feed your microbiome….and as per Prof Tim Spector and ZOE’s team…you can indulge
yourself with a nice 4oz glass of red wine….with your meal.
China reopening could see a spike in covid cases, as well as new variants. Be vigilant with hygiene and mask wearing to stay healthy and safe.
What about flu? Just spent 8 days in bed feeling really ill with flu( neg LFT's and vaccinated). Secondary infection as well. Immune system definitely fails as one gets older.
Sorry but, could you clarify how you know the causality you're implying with some of these recommendations is real? For example, regarding not sleeping in too much at weekends because "if you overdo it that does have consequences for your health." Additional sleeping in at weekends *and* the worse health outcomes you mentioned might both be symptoms with a common cause, e.g. someone with a natural circadian rhythm at the tail of the distribution (>>24 hours), which I seem to remember from one of your previous videos also has correlations with negative health outcomes. In that case, it's not obvious that more rigidly ignoring one's natural rhythm by also waking up early at weekends would be less stressful on the body.
Last weekend I was very tired due to overwork and not enough sleep, and I began to feel under the weather, as if I was coming down with something. So I allowed myself a couple of days with excess sleep and less work, and the under-the-weather feeling disappeared. If I'd ignored my body, I'd have come down with one of these nasty colds. It's all about compromise it seems!
Yes, they do. They are also nicer people. 🤣🤣
