  • What if the threat to American democracy came from within our own military? “War Game,” a 2024 Sundance Official Selection documentary, imagined just such a scenario and convened a bipartisan group of policymakers to respond. What did they learn - and how real is the threat?

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself."

The world's richest country with the most expensive military is enjoying these benefits of their democracy: Economic inequality, inflation, stagnant real wages for the last fifty years, costly healthcare, an expensive education system, student loan debt totaling $1.7 trillion with an average balance of $38,000, poor public transportation systems, racial inequality, mass incarceration, the militarization of police, deteriorating infrastructure, housing affordability, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence.
The 'Arsenal of Democracy' produces 40 percent of the world's weapons. It is a very profitable business model in which other countries buy these weapons to fight each other. The key is maximizing profits without shedding US blood by inducing conflicts between and within countries outside the USA. One client is eager to spend AUD 368 billion to buy a few high-quality used nuclear-powered submarines. This business model's critical components are NATO, QUAD, ANZUS, Five Eyes, AUKUS, and MCC (Mutual Cross-Service Agreement).
Since WWII, the United States has started 201 wars, overthrew 36 foreign leaders, killed or attempted to kill 50, dropped bombs in 30 countries, and interfered in 86 foreign elections. To make the world safe for democracy, the US has caused the deaths of tens of millions of people in its conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. The CIA was involved in covert operations that resulted in mass killings of communists in over 22 countries, 500,000 to 2,000,000 Indonesian civilians disappeared in 1965-1966.
Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.

And the alternative is communism or autocracy? So one leader with real possible evil intent who when someone doesn't agree with them or challenges them can decide to rid the earth of anyone at their will, and force their own set of rules and laws on everyone. The problem with the people in this country is wanting someone else to do the work while they sit back and complain. They don't have to bother knowing much at all about the people they're putting in charge. FROM SCHOOL BOARD ON UP TO THE HIGEST OFFICE IN THE LAND. Not getting rid of them when they aren't doing their jobs that benefit the majority of their constituents, instead of just a powerful few. They just keep reelecting them. Instead of holding the guilty accountable. Forcing term limits on everyone. So many things that most Americans don't even bother with knowing anything about beyond what some jack in the box tells them and then have child like belief in what they're told more so than toward the very religion they claim to identify with. We have set our own selves up for a terrorist take over. From within our own borders. Not anyone from the outside. This very shit has gone on in other countries but do you think most Americans have a clue of what goes on inside their own states government much less any where else. Until we start owning our own stupidity then blaming democracy is just another way of holding something else accountable for flunking your exam, when you're the one who didn't study.

America is not perfect. However, a good portion of your listed issues are still there, because of one particular political party, that fights against any forward movement to solve those problems. It’s about one group of Americans that wants to progress forward, and solve problems to move toward a more perfect union, and one that wishes to go backwards to punishment, revenge, and judgements of others, whom they deem unlike them, and/or undeserving.

I am also an eternal optimist and will defend myself if necessary. We must ask our governor sand the commanders of the bases in our state what they are preparing for. The "disruptors" can make many, many mistakes and still do a lot of damage. The defenders only have to make one significant mistake, which could spell disaster for people. Even if they can't tell us anything for security reasons, they will know that the public is aware and they will have to answer to history if they make the wrong call.

Yesterday, on the 4th of July, a truck covered in Trump flags attempted to pull into each of the driveways in our neighborhood for unknown reasons. Our neighbors weren't home, and they had gates. He couldn't access their property. We saw him before he reached our house, and my housemate (who is a white male) confronted him, and he left without further confrontation.
We live in a rural community in Western Washington State. A so-called "blue" state. Don't take your safety for granted, no matter where you live. No matter who you are. They are emboldened by the belief that the orange man will win, and they are dangerous.

It’s pretty scary to think that the military would revolt like this? My dad served in the military and he would be shocked to think this could be possible.
How did this all go so terribly wrong? These public servants can obviously vote whatever way they like but once they put on the uniform, judges robe or congressional pin, they should check personal bias at the door and do what is best for all. I know our current President does, but pretty sure the previous guy did not!

Democracy is when those who make decisions on your behalf have the duty to ask for your consent first. Today's republics are actually modern oligarchies where the interest groups of the rich are arbitrated by the people, that is, you can choose from which table of the rich you will receive crumbs.
The "fatigue" of democracy occurs when there is a big difference between the interests of the elected and the voters, thus people lose confidence in the way society functions. As a result, poor and desperate citizens will vote with whoever promises them a lifeline, i.e. populists or demagogues.
The democratic aspect is a collateral effect in societies where the economy has a strong competitive aspect, that is, the interests of those who hold the economic power in society are divergent. Thus those whealty, and implicitly with political power in society, supervise each other so that none of them have undeserved advantages due to politics. For this reason, countries where mineral resources have an important weight in GDP are not democratic (Russia, Venezuela, etc.), because a small group of people can exploit these resources in their own interest. In poor countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, etc.) the main exploited resource may even be the state budget, as they have convergent interests in benefiting, in their own interest, from this resource. It is easy to see if it is an oligarchy because in a true democracy laws would not be passed that would not be in the interest of the many.
The first modern oligarchy appeared in England at the end of the 17th century. After the bourgeois revolution led by Cromwell succeeded, the interest groups of the rich were unable to agree on how to divide their political power in order not to reach the dictatorship of one. The solution was to appoint a king to be the arbiter. In republics, the people are the arbiter, but let's not confuse the possibility of choosing which group will govern you with democracy, that is, with the possibility of citizens deciding which laws to pass and which not to.
The solution is modern direct democracy in which every citizen can vote, whenever he wants, over the head of the parliamentarian who represents him. He can even dismiss him if the majority of his voters consider that he does not correctly represent their interests.
It's like when you have to build a house and you choose the site manager and the architect, but they don't have the duty to consult with you. The house will certainly not look the way you want it, but the way they want it, and it is more certain that you will be left with the money given and without the house. It is strange that outside of the political sphere, nowhere, in any economic or sports activity, will you find someone elected to a leadership position and who has failure after failure and is fired only after 4 years. We, the voters, must be consulted about the decisions and if they have negative effects we can dismiss them at any time, let's not wait for the soroco to be fulfilled, because we pay, not them. In any company, the management team comes up with a plan approved by the shareholders. Any change in this plan must be re-approved by the shareholders and it is normal because the shareholders pay.
