100% - its so easy to be like “sure, mind letting me know when you’re done?” if you really want to enjoy your music at that volume. But that takes empathy/not having an immensely fragile ego

The guy playing the music loud is such a perfect encapsulation of how people act now. He is clearly in the wrong but acts like the person calmly asking him to stop annoying everyone around him is in the wrong. So self centered. Infuriating!

I actually thought Emil confronting the guy playing music loud was a bit. Who gets that heated from someone asking them to turn down the music lmfao
More common than you think. People are just not used to being confronted, so they get needlessly defensive/shitty when people ask them to do something as simple as turning music down.
The guy wanted to do whatever he wanted and felt embarrassed for getting called out so he doubled down.
Emil is right. I think it's weird that someone can be so popular, so rich, Time "person of the year," and yet elicit only a neutral response from most people. She's the best at being a blank slate for the listener/viewer to project onto. Whatever opinion you have, Taylor has. What ever product you like, Taylor likes. She's perfectly manufactured to be inoffensive. And ultimately it's frustrating to some, myself included, that something that takes up so much cultural space can be so boring.
That's how most major cultural stuff is. Whatever fits, however marginally, for the most people, while able to remain relevant, becomes huge
i agree although i do also think her team is partially to blame. in her 2020 documentary miss americana theres a scene where shes arguing with her team and father (who was a shareholder in her record label at the time) where shes essentially begging them to let her come out as a democrat lol. its riduclous but she is definitely treated as a product that needs to remain marketable to all.
I do think it's easier to call her boring if you haven't experienced girl hood or being a woman in general. She also has stood up on political issues before and gotten thousands of her fans to register to vote. But as a fan I agree that ultimately the reason she is so popular is because she's remained inoffensive and neutral in a lot of aspects. She makes up for it through her lyricism in my opinion.

she’s like fine, perfectly unremarkable. that’s not a dig, she’s clearly cultivated this image intentionally and she’s very good at it, i just don’t know how she elicits so much passion from a very specific type of person
i hate that most pop culture/popular music is bland and universally appealing but i think she is an exception, as someone who played/studied classical music growing up and loves bob dylan, leonard cohen, death grips, etc she writes engaging pop songs (objectively less formulaic than bob dylan) and is a great storyteller/lyricist, people connect their personal experiences to hers through her songs

Does anyone remember when we all agreed that taylor swift was just like an annoying pop star and not the queen of the world??? Literally what did she do to flip the switch like that??? I feel like I’m going crazy. I can literally name like 5 of her songs and they’re all the most algorithm-based formulaic pop songs you can imagine. I don’t trust anyone anymore fr cause how did everyone know to just suddenly change their mind on her
I think cuz we all had pandemic brain and then she released 2 folksy albums in 2020 that people latched onto for dear life
i think what happened was everyone turned on her in 2016 over the kanye thing and then in 2020 the full phone call came out and people realized they called her a liar for no reason and felt bad lol

as a black women, taylor swift is extremely bland. i’m sure a lot of people have heard about the idea of taylor swift weaponizing feminism to tell people they can’t be mean to her instead of using it for it’s actual purpose of uplifting all women in all aspects. I think that is very true and adds to why her audience is so big because she is only a activist to white women. when it comes to activism for any other group, she is extremely hesitant or non existent because it doesn’t directly benefit her. i don’t really care for her but i a lot of my problem is with her fans
i feel the same way, she’s almost this perfect encapsulation of white culture (or lack thereof). the fact that she’s able to take up so much space despite being very average is so perfectly fitting
i hadn’t thought about that, but it makes sense once pointed out.
And the way she historically has aligned herself(read: exploited) black artists for her own public benefit has always made me deeply uncomfortable. It’s the PR equivalent of saying I Can’t Be Racist I Work With Black People.

also to ben’s point of her running for president because she cares. i don’t agree with that in the slightest. she is not at all a person who cares about anything that doesn’t directly benefit her. she will never take a stance on anything that might divide her audience. The biggest ‘stance’ she’s taken was the whole voting thing which inherently isnt a bad thing. telling people to vote isn’t a good or bad thing and she didn’t take a stance politically. there are many things she would have to decide on in order to run that all of her fans won’t agree with. i don’t think it would be beneficial to her in a way she would care about and she definitely doesn’t care about anyone besides herself
If she took a stance, she would lose a big portion of her audience. If she condemned racists, trump supporters, etc., she wouldn’t be a billionaire.
She’s a horrible person. With that much of a following and a “die for her” audience, she could potentially help create change.
She urged people to not vote for Marsha Blackburn and made some comments supporting gay rights, but overall she’s as progressive as a business could be without losing a lot of customers. With her main objective being so middle-of-the-road that anyone could like her, I don’t understand why Ben thinks she would run for president. He really took that scene where she cried at her dad to allow her to come out as a democrat to heart
