Isle of Man Ep 9 A bad day for Carol

  • After a peaceful night at Ayre National Nature Reserve we indulge in some Manx sausages for breakfast.
We add up the expenses for our first week on the Isle of Man before heading south down the west coast towards Peel.
En route we stop off at St John’s to see the Ballaharra Stones and Tynwald Hill and reap the consequences of ignoring the fairies and talking at Devil’s Elbow!
The rain clears for our walk around Peel harbour and we cheer ourselves up with a lovely meal out and enjoy the sunset.

So glad Carol is fine, lovely video as always. I wanted to email you both with a private message but you wouldn’t want to be inundated with messages from subscribers so guess there’s no way to do that. I just wanted to express heart-felt thanks to you both, I’ve loved watching all your videos (and will continue to do so!), I am retired and live alone and with arthritis threatening my future plans to campervan around the UK myself! (that and Covid)., Carol and Ken, you’ve got me through lockdown and cheered me up no end. Thank you xx

Some people find Acupuncture really helps with arthritis. Acupuncture can be expensive but if you have a community acupuncture project near you, they can be substantially less costly.

Absolutely gutted to see Carol hurt, there was something heartwarming to see her enjoy a chip with Diane sauce! Something quite emotional about the video tonight, think the music added to it and the serene walk back, very nearly brought a tear….certainly a lump in the throat. The world needs more Ken and Carols. X

Carol, you have my deepest sympathy! Had a day like this a few weeks ago. In the morning wrapped my toes on the footboard of the bed. Just after lunch. Fell up the steps. Smacked my kneecap. Finishing up the dishes after dinner. Closed the dishwasher on my finger. Saved the nail. Broke the finger. My husband said. I don't like where this is going. At bedtime it will be your neck. My reply. Way ahead of you. I'm going to bed now! My husband tucked me into bed with a nice hot toddy and a book. He has my vote for husband of the year! Thank you for showing this trip. I am adding the Isle of Man to our list. Feel better and be safe.

    1) I exhort all folk to undertake an annual Advanced First Aid course with St John's Ambulance.
    2) I recommend everyone should carry a first aid kit however it should be a container of your choice and filled with the things you want and need. Retail first aid kits are stuffed with profit makers and not stuff you need.
    3) Peel castle eh ? Built by Sir Robert no doubt....
    4) Scrumptious meals. 10 points. :-)

A little bottle of essential oil of Lavander, such as is available from H & B & other healthfood shops, is a great thing to have with you. It is antiseptic & analgesic, anti-inflammatory & anti-viral & good to drip on burns. Sniffing it can help with headaches & will also be calming & help with any nausea.

Despite Carol's mishap , you produced another lovely travelogue of Peel but no, "the"is not required before Tynwald, Ken ( it is just Tynwald) and yes, that school that you pointed out is very much a going concern . It is Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, the only primary school that teaches all lessons in the Manx language, so quite important to the Island's culture, indeed. Manx was almost extinct but there is a concerted effort to keep it alive which is in evidence all over the Island,

"Tynwald Day", when they hold the open air session on the artificial hill, is 5 July (not 24 June). the Queen, or more usually her representative (the Lieutenant Governor) presides. There is a church service, parade of notables, and a fair on the field at the side. there is also a military or naval detachment providing a guard of honour. I once attended as the King of Norway was attending (Norwegian Vikings used to be the original Kings of Mann), but couldn't spot him. Even as a King he wasn't allowed to sit on the top of the hill, only the Queen or Governor, and the Deemsters (High Court judges) are at the top, with the President of Tynwald etc. He had to sit on one of the lower levels. Interestingly, if a new law isn't "promulgated" (i.e. read out in Manx and English) at the ceremony within 18 months of being enacted it falls. Here in Panama we are luckier in that there are 2 national days, celebrating independence from first Spain and then Colombia, and with better weather than we sometimes had on Tynwald Day!

that was some walk you done on the way back from your meal, I luv passing the shops and the sea view was great, especially of a night time with all the lights on.

Sorry to hear Carol had a bad fall. The cut on her eyebrow looked painful ☹ but we are so glad she was okay .👍 👍 Those wooden paths are a nightmare when wet unless they have the metal grid on them.
Another great vlog but so sorry Carol had a bad day.

Nice, Did you spot Jorby Airfield, St Georges and Valkyrie RN shore facilities and the Internment Camp? Hard to tell what that wet black dawgie was. Glad Carol wasn't really hurt but, the punpkin soup, and the rest of the food looked good. Wouldn't mind some of the steak but, I can't drive me plastic unfantastic government issue teef. Thanks m8s, done well, stay vertical Eh!

Is a shame, when i saw the first video of the Isle of Man at Liverpool steam packet, I work in an office right next to there and walk past there and up by the usually moored cruise liners for my lunchtime work. thought the Steam packet is early morning so would have missed you lol. ty for your videos, they like alot of others are some normality with the modern madness

Hope you’re not too sore Carol, just shows how easy it is to have an accident. No matter what sort of shoes you have, on wet wood almost any would slip.
All the best and fingers crossed for you both for the rest of an incident free trip.
    Thanks for your videos, David.

@@LifeistooshortCK Yes, you’re shoes look similar to mine, Merrells , they have a vibram sole too, no matter what you have on that wet timber walk way with timber that’s been through a machine you’re likely to do a bit of skating.
      Glad you’re not too bad.
      All the best, David

Can I just say what a pleasure these videos are. I stumbled across your channel today and I've whiled away a lazy Saturday afternoon/evening watching the first nine episodes of your Isle of Man trip. I love these sort of travelling adventures and, having never been to the IoM before, I've been really interested to see it close up. I love the personal nature of it, from the campervan arrangements, the mealtimes, to the scenery and the stunning drone shots. It really feels like I'm along for the ride! Thanks to both of you for sharing your travels with us and I look forward to seeing the rest of this trip and many more. :)

Sorry to hear about Carol's bad day. Glad however that it was no worse than a shakeup and bit of pain. That's the busiest we have seen a seafront since this little series started. I hope you spoilt her rotten the day after as well. Sometimes it can take twenty four hours or so for the shock of a fall to really make itself known. The day has been very much like it was in your Vlog here in Glawstershire today. That Indian summer is looking less likely by the day.🤔😬
