This 2004 Mercedes SL55, originally built for baseball player Ray Durham of the SF Giants, features, apparently, every single item available from RennTech's catalog that year. On top of the nearly $200,000 MSRP for the base car, RennTech's upgrade bill was over $108,000. Under the hood, the car gets new intercoolers, throttle body, intercooler pump, intake, manifold, and more. It then gets RennTech's big brake kit, suspension upgrade, and bodywork, along with a $15,000 stereo system. This car is an incredible example of depreciated German engineering, and Michael, the car's owner, is a hobbyist detailer, keeping the car in immaculate condition.

Aside from the hood scoop and wheels, that SLR style intercooler is BOSS. These supercharged 5.5L engines are tanks.

As crazy as the hood looks on this car... it actually goes really good with it, especially with the Red paint job, This Car is just Beautiful man!! Something I would hold onto forever... even if I moved on to a new car I would keep this car as a collection!! Simply BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

The 'stage' nomenclature is getting a bit out of control lately, in my mind;
stage 1: Minor mods like exhaust, intake, ecu reflash tune.
stage 2: Replacement of super/turbocharger, injectors, fuel pumps, standalone ecu units.
stage 3: Replacing internals, cams and pistons for example, whilst retaining the stock crank and rods.
stage 4. Stroker/blueprinted complete engine, with complete headwork, generally coupled with an appropriately sized turbo/supercharger.
There really isn't much that you can't do within that naming convention, I guess it's just a case of always wanting to seem 'one better', marketing basically. I can appreciate that these tuning shops have a modular system for their upgrades but it still seems a bit over the top to claim something is a 'stage 9' when it is putting out 575 at the wheels on a stock engine.

I don't think you quite understand how its supposed to work lol. they have stages for one group of mods, ie. cams, exhaust or brakes. when its a package of mods etc from a shop even though the actual power level isn't hectic, it doesn't mean it can't be a stage 9. its just a group of parts/mods/work, this isn't just a package for the motor. to have only 4 stages with the last one being a complete build is fkn retarded. the difference between a stage 5 and stage 6 could be as little as a more aggressive tune, or a louder exhaust. it doesn't fuckin matter lol. its better than calling it 'package 1'
That system you refer to is the modularity I was referring to, but in the traditional sense the 'stage' naming convention has typically run from 1-3, with 4 being reserved for extreme builds. A good reference point for this is the tuning upgrade kits that were produced throughout the 90s and 00s by various tuning companies that adhered fairly strictly to the 1-2-3 label. In a way these new systems have appropriated the old naming convention and twisted it for their own marketing purposes so now you don't really have a good idea of how the parts stand relative to each other.

Here's the difference. Stage 6 is 200k and stage 9 is 300k with a stage 9 badge. I'll take stage 9 please.

Don't comment often, but WOW, this car is absolutely gorgeous! Best era of AMG(Mercedes V8's in general) engines IMO, sad we couldn't hear it properly in the tunnel because of the wind noise...don't mind the bonnet scoop and skirts either, sick car! :)

Hmm, the standard SL55 already makes almost 500 HP. So you need 6 stages to get 115 HP more? That should be done with a tune and exhaust maybe. Anyway, neat car!
I believe the almost 500HP was at the crank his was almost 600 to the wheels. That's quite a bit of extra power. :)
Still, stage '6' would suggest freakin 800+hp or something with upgraded cams, ported heads, injectors etc, not just a stock long block with a supercharger and exhaust, that's stage 2 or 3 at most. I wish tuners stuck with the traditional stages instead of using a bigger number for marketing.
True however can't fix silly companies doing this for marketing. The average non car person doesn't know any better. :D
A renntech supercharger goes for 15k-30k.. carbon airbox is $5999.. just the throttle body alone is $3500.. this is a genuine stage 6 package.

m113k motor is a great motor for you have so much potential horsepower with simple and cheap mods. I have the m156 which is also great motor but to make more hp you need to invest considerably more and yes, lets not forget about the head bolt issues on the m156. The M113k is bullet proof which also adds to its appeal
Had E55 with some tune on it, AMG specialized tuner made some stages for the M113K
Mine was stage 3 with bigger intercooler, exhaust etc and she was...over 640 at crank, 600 from wheels

He had the audio recorder too close to the window. I use the same model of recorders, and they have an auto level feature the turns down audio when they redline. The wind noise basically caused the recorder to turn sound all the way down. No way to fix it in post.

During and a short time after, the tunnel runs messed with the Mic a good bit you think? Audio didn't really come through on those 2 tunnel runs and then for the rest of the video is was crystal clear.

quwers well yes as I have seen, but on a good bit of other videos with tunnel runs that Matt has made the audio came through much clearer.
There is no way to have audio that's crystal clear for the inside of a car conversation AND clear for a windows down/full throttle pull in a tunnel. You'd have to record those tracks separately. The auto-leveling of the Zoom H4N recorder I use can't adjust itself fast enough to catch up.
