The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Even better than the studio version. A very charming and gifted young Teresa Brewer. Long ago and far away, but these days in 2024 in Germany runs a TV commercial with this song in background

What a clever staging for this song depicting the “modern” rock and rollers vs. the turn of the century images. Interesting how late 1950s would consider about 50 years ago from then as being “old fashioned” . Teresa was about twenty-five years old at the time of this hit record yet her hair and attire here make her appear much older. This is really a great clip…Thank you “Ed Sullivan Show”!

Sergio Franchi, Harry Secombe and now Teresa Brewer! This is a great week on the Sullivan show! Thank you so much for this lovely performance by Teresa singing one of her biggest records on the Sullivan show. I had wanted to see this for quite some time. "A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl" charted at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Teresa and all the way to number 3 on the UK Singles chart. The song was written by Bob Merrill. It successfully combined the feel of an earlier '50's pop song with the new rock and roll beat, as did Kay Starr's "Rock and Roll Waltz" from the same year, to become a big song success. I love how they used two sets for the song, an old-fashioned family setting and a rock and rolling malt shop to represent the two different themes of the music. Also, what an exuberant and fun performance by Teresa. Great video quality too. Thank you again for this fantastic video of Teresa!

Thanks so much for this wonderful post. All I can say is what a treat this Teresa treasure is! And I'm hoping there'll soon be more Brewer postings, too. It would be especially nice to see videos of her singing things like "I Think the World of You," "Bo Weevil," "When I Leave the World Behind," and Peace of Mind," among others, all of which Ms. Brewer performed on the Sullivan show in the Fifties. Classic entertainment, I'm sure!
    Thank you again!

I would imagine that Scooby-Doo, the beloved cartoon character got his name from the scat singing of this song. I know most sources will say that it came from Frank Sinatra's Strangers In The Night, but I truly believe it's from this.
