Is It Possible To Be Vegan-Keto?

  • Despite what conventional medicine has told us, type 1 diabetes is not a sentence for a heavy reliance on insulin. For many people, a diet that carefully monitors carb intake can dramatically reduce blood sugar swings and reduce the amount of insulin needed.
    Keto (or the ketogenic diet) has gotten a lot of buzz lately, and this fat-heavy very low-carb approach to eating is showing some promise for diabetics and many other metabolic diseases as well. With that being said, there is no perfect diet for everyone, and each person needs to find what works best for them. One of my guests on this week’s Doctor’s Farmacy podcast, Dr. Carrie Diulus, has found vegan keto is the best approach for managing her type 1 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight. We’re also joined by Dr. Ethan Weiss, who’s been steadily in ketosis for about 2 years using a plant-heavy, mostly pescatarian keto approach.
    This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and SomniFix.

    That was super amazing and really informative. As a holistic practitioner and suffering with my own metabolic issues, I have been on this weight gain roller coaster for about 20 years and the diet that has helped me the most is a combination of Keto and intermittent fasting, basically at the end of the day, it's keeping my insulin level low, whereas I had been taught and have been teaching for years that we must have 3 main meals and 2 snacks......this approach does not work for most.
    Keep up the great work of bringing us really sound advice.

      @jellybeanvinkler4878 Před 27 dny

      @tinaferr exactly!
      I went from a (rather unhealthy) vegetarian to strict keto with IF and EF. In the first weeks, I definitely dropped weight and pee'd my brains out. Until I learned to add electrolytes, I was a mess! But in the long run, I started to feel better than I ever have in my entire life. I initiated the keto diet, complete with strict measuring, weighing, and tracking all macros, for weight loss. I ate only meat, fish, dairy and low carb/high fiber vegetables. Only cold pressed coconut oil and EVOO. For an entire year.
      I was pleasantly surprised with the other benefits: joint pain gone, plantar fasciitis gone, back pain gone, dental plaque gone, gas and bloating gone. I had no idea that, all my life, the scum on my teeth was caused by grainfoods and sugars! And had never experienced having little to no gas, til keto. 😮 To understand, finally, that processed grains were the root of the evils in my life was so very enlightening.
      Five years later, I feel healed. I slip in and out of my low carb diet. But I immediately feel all the bad things if I slip up too much. Gas is very noticeable with any processed grain products. Or ANY legumes. 😮 Joint pain and especially back ache, too, with excessive desserts or carby treats.
      Not to mention, weight gain.....😢 With each carb overindulgence, I've gained 3-5 lbs which initiates the yoyo diet rollercoaster.

Even though I am not overweight when I did vegetarian keto, I found my body way more sculpted, and I do think as plant-based eaters. We can eat far too many carbs. I agree with the statement that we should go for metabolic flexibility. This talk inspired me to stop eating too many sweet fruits, rice, and noodles.

    You guys make an awesome triad of talent. I'm an old computer type who saved himself from the Medical-Industrial complex. I had six MD's from three different large medial organizations get it wrong on my low insulin and resulting unwanted weight-loss and loss of vitality. I figured it out from data by Joseph Kraft, MD, and the HOMA2 model from Oxford, which I think are profoundly accurate for people on the standard American diet. Even endocrinologists at Lahey Health didn't know about this, and got it wrong. My solution is 14 units of basil insulin per day, and a mostly carnivore diet with some fruit, nuts, dark chocolate, and coconuts. I keep studying this and adjusting it, and I'm sure it's not perfect, but it has made a huge difference in my quality of life, including getting back my needed weight, and greatly improving vitality (I'm still alive too). I can relate a lot to Carrie, except my body still produces some insulin (c-peptide around 0.5, but maybe falling). Switching to Ethan, my total cholesterol is through the roof, but HDL and Triglycerides are amazingly good. Note that per Dr. Paul Mason the liver uses insulin as a signal to increase LDL receptors, so low insulin may raise LDL. There are studies that show higher total cholesterol reduces risk of death in old people, and Ethan is not being logical on high cholesterol, when there is no data to show that high cholesterol is bad when you have great HDL/Triglycerides. We know that saturated fat raises cholesterol, but that is not relevant to anything, so it has to be discounted unless there is good data, which there isn't. But still, I really appreciate the nuances, even the ones from main-stream conditioning, which seem to support what I have been finding in myriad places.

    I just started vegan keto (from just regular vegan)- I also started IF/OMAD! So far so good... The only downside is its more expensive, I need more supplements (Super food & Super greens powder, slow release iron, calcium, MCT oil, as well as my usual mutivitamin from before)- plus, grains and legumes ars way cheaper than tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds (I ate these things before, but not this much/in these quantities!) But its ok, I can swing it. Barely, lol. But it's absolutely not accessible to anyone, like, when people say "Anyone can be plant based" I believe that's true for regular plant based, even in "food deserts," but I do not think At All vegan keto is realistic and/or accessable for everyone. Both location wise and financially. It's very consuming, time, effort and money-wise.

    Normal insulin is about 7 if you are not on a low carb diet. Joseph Kraft ran 14000 OGTT with insulin testing, and found that was normal with what he considered healthy people. The HOMA2 model shows that a fasting glucose of 83 and fasting insulin of 7 are normal with no insulin resistance and normal insulin production. If you are running on fat, then the insulin will be much lower. However, if you are not running on fat, and you have insulin below 5 and glucose over 90, you have insulinopenia, which is life threatening as it advances slowly, but most doctors are not aware of it. I figured this out as I approached death, no kidding.

    Mark really should stop interrupting his guests with stupid comments. One of the reasons why I'm avoiding his videos. Like very annoying and rude. I'm going to give dislike to this video just because of that.

      There is a difference between a conversation and an interview..these are conversations between like-minded, qualified professionals so ALL comments and opinions are EXACTLY what makes it interesting and informative ..{if you bothered to read the point of the channel you would know this }...so perhaps should you go find "interviews" instead of upsetting yourself.

And if you read comments on all his videos, that's the biggest complain, so I guess its not only me, he should read comments and listen what listeners have to say. You must be older person for saying something like that because my generation will agree with me. For us youtube is the platform that we grow up with and we expect certain quality of videos.

Chris was also shown to be a completely incompetent and dishonest charlatan and you referring to him makes you loose a lot of credibility,.
