Professor David Diamond says you have been misled and deceived when it comes to LDL cholesterol and statins. But he isn't just going to tell you his opinion. He wants to show you the science. In his quest to set the record straight, he has been compared to "anti vaxers" and been called "dangerous." But the fascinating thing is that he is pointing out data that is in published, respected, peer-reviewed journals and showing a vastly different perspective than what we "know" about cholesterol and statins.
In a world of pharma industry influence and a medical culture that isn't good at reevaluating its beliefs, it's important to have voices like Dr. Diamond's to help us realize the science is far from settled. Please remember, this is meant for educational purposes only and in no way constitutes medical advice. Please contact your physician before making any changes or medical decisions.

Update, my latest LDL 200, HDL97, Tryg67; this time my dr became very upset and told me I was going to drop dead one of these days from CVD/stroke. She pushed meds again. One more time I requested a CAC test, and finally, she wrote the order. But she did prescribe something without my approval because I pick up my allergies med and this cholesterol-lowering (not statin) that actually lowers tryg with little impact on LDL. I know she thought she was having my best interest in mind, but that is simply wrong; however, I did not want to get her in trouble. Fast forward, I did my CAC test, and my result is 0 in all coronary arteries and the heart parameters are unremarkable. My risk for vascular disease shows as minimal, actually, as better than 100% of people my age (I am 66). Case closed; no more pushing cholesterol-lowering medications. Usually, I call to discuss my lab reports, this time she calls me quick to say everything was good. I guess it was hard to accept a mistake and see the patient you were harassing in the face. I am glad I stood my ground, but there might be people with high levels of chronic disease that benefit from medications. The problem is that Drs follow written standards of care that pile everybody under one umbrella. We are not copies of each other; human physiology is specific to each.

Good job on staying educated and responsible for your own welfare. It is hard to stay healthy even when you have all of the facts. I am a 63 y.o. fighting the slow growth of an older Dad body. The culprit is an M&M candy habit. My main metrics are A1C (measures glucose bound to hemoglobin) and my faithful leather belt. My A1C was 4.7% two months ago and is currently 5.4%. I am good with anything under 5% so I am reducing number of meals from 2 to 1 per day (OMAD) but I am still going to have some M&Ms (this is a first world problem...). My belt will hopefully drop a notch after a month or so of this. Will be continuing rigorous exercise for the limited blood glucose reduction as well as for brain health. Just say no to drugs (do you remember that public health message?).

My mother was on statins for years and refused to question her doctor. Her cholesterol level was around 2.5, which is extremely low, but the doctor kept pumping her with statins. Looking at the statin side effects, the only ones she didn't have were the ones that only apply to males. The side effects of the statins are actually the effects of low cholesterol. Her doctor kept giving her more and more pills to counteract the side effects. She got dementia and diabetes. More pills. Then the pills gave her ulcers. More pills. In the end she was so sick she could barely eat at all. The damn doctor killed her, through his own ignorance. My own doctor told me I should take statins because my total cholesterol was 6.3. I took the prescription and threw it in the bin. I have lost all faith in doctors and since I have a science background, I have much more faith in my own research. Low carbs, zero sugars, zero seed oils, and plenty of saturated of monounsaturated fat are working for me. The LDL hypothesis, like the saturated fat is bad hypothesis, is just plain wrong. And above the age of 60 high cholesterol is actually protective.

      5’7”. 65 years old.
After 6 months on a Keto diet here is the result. Following symptoms vanished
      Heartburn
      Dry flakey skin
      Body itching
Sensing things crawling on my skin or hair.
      Eyes look more clear.
Feeling of comfort inside my body at all times.
      Heart palpitation.
Sleep is much more restful if I am not disturbed by whatever it may be.
Always some black heads somewhere on my face.. No more zits.
I don’t get cuts easily. Stronger skin.
A bump, ingrown hair on my leg for years just suddenly came off. At last poof.
My morning breath is not so annoying that I can’t wait to brush the sucker.
I don’t feel bogged down.. Just a fresher energy. The air feels better and my mood is simply much lighter and better.
I used to get light headed more often than I cared and that is gone.
There was a strange, odd itch on the side of my left foot. I inherited it from my ex wife. she got it from someone else, it would appear every so often. It is no more at all.
I get up less often at night to urinate. In fact I only woke up once last night. I say wow.
Oh, no more bleeding gums here and there I used to get when flossing.
No more back pain, neck pain especially when I get up in the morning.
I tolerate cold and hot weather far better. Very interesting.
      Glass/shard in my elbows gone,
I just don’t seem to notice any hemorrhage.
Unlike before when my feet hurt after walking for a mile or two, I can walk for miles and miles without any pain whatsoever.
      No dandruff whatsoever.

September 2023: I had my yearly exam with my primary care provider (an internist MD who says he is an expert on lipidology and cholesterol) yesterday, and I told him my concerns about statins. I cited the Mayo Clinic and the National Institute of Health (USA). He said this made him angry; he compared my remarks to those of anti-vaxxers, and said that this was nonsense, coming from functional medicine practitioners, who are killing their patients by not prescribing statins. I expected him to disagree, but not to be so dismissive. Now I am looking for another primary care provider.

I was put on Statins - before being on them, my LDL was 3.9 mmmo/l - My A1C was Normal, My Triglycerides were normal, My Tri/HDL ratio was less than 1 (mmo/l) - but they screamed I needed to be on statins STAT reciting risk factors taken from who knows when at the behest of who knows what!... I was not obese nor overweight 6'1 @ 185lbs. Since taking going on statins, my ALT (Liver Enzymes) doubled. My AIC went from normal to "At risk". My subsequent blood work had my ALT doubling again and my A1C creeping towards pre diabetes as well as other odd abnormalities in almost every subsequent blood work since going on the Statins. So I did some research - I could find a lot of sources with compelling arguments to not (for my scenario) be on statins. It seemed to me this Statin religion was a big pharma cash cow. I Did more research. Things got scary I'll tell ya. From what I was searching you would think articles and videos etc stating " you should be on Statins" would also be coming at me - but no. Why were there basically none of these?
I did the best of my own research and I couldn't find a logical reason to be on them - my blood work (other than a lower LDL count) were screaming "somethings not right here". So, this week - in front of a new, young, "progressive" Dr. I told him, I've done research, and I have found there is not a lot of evidence that these will be beneficial for me in fact to the contrary - I dont want to be on these anymore. He looked at me with that look that says "I have to tell you - that you understand the risk of coming off them - to not have my licence suspended - but I cant disagree with you". So Im off! And I have a feeling that my liver will thank me.

Fast forward, I did my labs again this month, and my A1C is fixed, no longer showing I am prediabetic. Once again she tries to prescribe me statins. These are my recent labs, LDL 173, HDL 90%, and triglycerides of 76, bp is always normal too. Once again she said, the total is higher now, I asked do you think HDL is bad a 90%, and trygly 76. "No it is actually very good, she responded. The risk ratio is actually 1.46 now. Case closed she insisted no more. All my liver and kidney, CBC, minerals are WNL. She looked at my lipids and said, just the the referring internist , your LDL of 217, Total Cholesterol of 310 means you need statins. I asked what about my HDL of 76 and my Triglycerides of 73 and that I’m 68 and feel great? She never got that far, she just clearly looks at LDL and TC. I asked her if she was sure I needed statins even if I hadn’t had the CT scan yet and that she had no clue what my heart status was. She pulled up some publication from the Cardiology main publication and read to me what her instructions are when someone like me sees her. She actually had to get permission for the scan referral since I wasn’t taking her advice. I am not impressed by Cardiologists with clear exceptions like Bret.

I just saw this interview by chance and found it incredibly illuminating and helpful. At 75 I am heathy but have high LdL (small particle) that my cardiologist wants to treat with statins. I recently had a calcium score test at my request and the results were 1.39 which shocked my doctor who had to do some back pedaling but he is still certain as he has been for the last 7 years that I need to take statins which made me feel 'unwell' - so I stopped taking them and will never take them again. Based on this article I recognize my sweet tooth is what is getting the better of me and I also need to do resistance training so whatever sugar I do ingest has a place to go. Mechanistically this all makes sense to me. So I plan to look into the low carb diet ideas out there and give them a try. I have also listened to Dr Stephanie Seneff and recommend her CZcams discussions on statins and anything else she decides is worth talking about. You don't even have to exercise. Most of the people who live into their 90's never did any strenuous exercise since they got out of high school, nor, did they watch their diet for fat intake. The cholesterol 'kings' of research cannot explain why these people live so long, if dietary fats and having high cholesterol is so deadly. IN fact, once you're over 60, you have a better chance of living longer if we have HIGH cholesterol levels. Turns out fats are necessary for many metobolic processes which keep us healthy. What isn't necessary? SUGAR. Turns out, we can live just fine, eating ZERO carbohydrates. Our body can make it's own glucose, as needed.

I’m due to have my lipid profile checked next week. I’m already struggling to find clothes that are not too large for me.

      Shameless MD! Terrible 😮
Apparently statins are either fat or water soluble and this REALLY MATTERS for long term brain health. The oil soluble statins (like Lipitor) can enter the brain, causing harm to brain functions like memory, concentration, focus and decision making. Water soluble statins like Crestor do not enter the brain and cause harm like Lipitor does. My MD never explained ANY of this to me, he likely didn't even know these vital facts
Now on lchf (more recently carnivore eating) I have some of these best lipid numbers for my age group but I seriously doubt it even matters because my inflammatory symptoms, driven by reducing carbs/fibre etc. are driving the real, meaningful reduction in health risk
The mind boggles when you can investigate and treat moderate to serious health risks yourself yet be at much greater risk of dying when you engage a western, drug pushing MD

Thank you very much for this information. In the past 5 months, I have gone from obese and diabetic with high BP to having lowered all my Bio-markers to a healthy level. I am now facing an aggressive push from my doctor to address my moderately high LDL with a Statin. Very frustrating but I am going to (as was pointed out in this video) continue to take my own health decisions in hand based on my successes and continue on my present nutritional Ketogenic path.

  • @glennkoenig6078

I came here because I started the keto diet about 3 weeks ago with the goal of lowering my BG levels, loosing weight, and getting off of Metformin, Ozempic, Crestor, and hopefully 2 BP meds. My BG is down from 300 to around 125. lost 22lbs, and decided I am not taking the Crestor anymore. My last 2 labs had my HDL, LDL, and Try in the normal range and this was while I was no on low carb. Things can only get better, in my opinion, with the keto diet. Wrting this background makes me realize how much of a mess I created. This was an absolutely excellent discussion that was actually captivating to listen to as a non-medically trained person, but can appreciate as an Engineer trained in the scientific method.

Super excited to find this video. I have been a low-carb person naturally since I was a kid, and my cholesterol is aways boarderline high. After some weight loss (underweight bmi 16.5 right now) due to the GRED problem, I cut off more carbs since sugar causes reflux issues for me. The most recent lipid test is TG 79, HDL 114, LDL 183, Total 313. My doctor is seriously worried, and wants to prescribe statins. I do not want to take it since I think the current diet keep my GRED under control, and I do not have any other abnormal numbers except for this cholesterol thing. I guess now I can find peace since now I have a reason for my “weird” lipid numbers.

Request a CAC (coronary artery calcification test). You probably have to pay out of pocket. It is not really that expensive, and it will give you peace of mind knowing your risk and making the best decisions. I did that and MD stopped forcefully trying to give me meds.

Damaged LDL seems to be the problem. Dr Paul Mason argues that glycolated or damaged LDL can’t be absorbed back into the liver because the LDL receptors won’t recognise damaged LDL. Damaged LDL then enters into the wall of arteries by breaking down the protein bonds of the artery walls and builds up in the walls, narrowing the arteries and causing cardiac events. He strongly argues that it is damaged LDL that contributes to the problem. The root cause is inflammation - sugar and seed oils and other environmental factors.

So amazing!! Thank you! Excellent info and great questions Dr. Scher! My husband has FH and has been confused about what meds to ask his doc about letting go of. Especially since he has been on a strict low carb lifestyle after his 3rd heart attack two months ago. He has been on a Statin and a plethora of meds for 8 yrs and has had no change in his arteries or heart function. In fact he has a 100% blockage in the same artery with blockages in 2 other arteries as well. We are excited that we are armed with better understanding! Thank you again!

While I understand what might be the legal reasons for doing so the caution at the binning of this video emphasizes the importance of consulting with and presumably following the advice of, your family physician is unhelpful. It is widely recognized in the LCHF community that most doctors are simply uninformed when it comes to the current information and research relating to LCHF.
If I followed my doctor's advice I would still be taking multiple drugs for diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension and have all of the negative o side effects of these drugs.
If the only way we can adopt the LCHF diet is to persuade our doctors that we know more about this than they do, then it seems we a doomed to continue with poor outcomes.
I wish that you and others who routinely give this caution might give more thought to how one should consider this advice.

Too much credit given here to pharma companies. Costs of their studies would be subtractable from taxes; as is any pay-outs due to litigation and in support of polititians?
They have been caught out repeatedly to be ignoring data that does not suit their agenda. It does not make sense to trust them. There should in fact be laws against them conducting any trial, and direct marketting to the public via mass media should not be allowed.
Anyway, to be paying attention to pharma company studies, is a waste of time and energy. Their aim is to divert attention away from what truly matters. A fox with a megaphone in the hen house cannot be taken seriously.
