My favorite 28 gauge hunting load

  • Over the past 5-6 years, the 28 gauge has quickly become my 'go-to' when I reach in the safe. It's seemingly the proper balance of shot density and speed, while not 'chewing' up birds that are shot in the distances I prefer to take them. Over some nice pointing dogs, the 28 gauge is hands down my favorite gauge to carry for a long day of chasing wild birds.
    We hope this is a load you'll try and we'd love to hear your results. Happy shooting!

    Good video with lots of extra detail. Spot on about not being distracted. I’ve reloaded rifle, shotgun and pistol over 30 years and never changed components enough to warrant dropping powder as you do but we’re apples and oranges for our needs. Recoil issues have me in a 28 as my primary shotgun, a Browning CXS w/32” bbls. I don’t miss my bigger guages and this little gun does most everything I did with the heavies. If folks haven’t tried one, they need to. I reload to keep shell cost down and make a 3/4oz in AAhulls. Very satisfying to go to the sporting clay field and hold my own with the bigger guns. I don’t even try the extra long super fast targets, have to keep it in perspective. The fun factor is just great. Thanks for your view on all this.

    Years ago, when I was new to pointers, I picked up a Franchi 48AL in 28ga. Light as a feather. Great on quail.

    I think my intellidropper ill do nicely on this. I picked up a yildiz 28 gauge from academy and I love it way more than my pump or semi 12 gauges. Been saving to get a good mec to reload for mine.

    Cool stuff! Fascinating, my pet chukar load in 12 ga goes 1215fps with 1.25oz of nickel 6s, but only uses 22.6gr of powder vs your 26.5gr in the 28. So in a way, less intense than the 28 😂

      @Intermtn9736 Před 9 měsíci

      And BTW I’ve never found Euro sized nickel plated shot (from Ballistic Products or cut open Fiocchi GP loads, etc) that is nearly as hard as the 6% antimony stuff from Precision reloading… there’s a reason they won’t publish antimony %s. For what you like, try their 7s or 7.5s, all their sizes come in a hair larger (e.g. 212 pellets oz for 6s vs “standard” 220/oz) since they use magnum shot then add plating on top. Wish someone has saved me a few hundred $$ of experimenting…

    Gaep crimp finisher is all I use after the pre crimp. Way better quality crimps over the stock finish crimper on the mec. Plus they roll/taper the hull to factory finish with no ridges in the top of the crimp.

      Love the GAEP components. Haven't used them before on my fold crimps, only one my TSS stuff, but will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!

    Just started shooting and loading 28g. Having so much fun with the sub gauges.
    Going to SD in October for pheasants and saw this video looking for a good 7/8 load, thanks for the great video
    Have you tried steel or heavy shot?

    is that a 3" hull you're using there? I see the recipe you refer is for a fiocchi 2.75" hull, but everything I'm finding in 2.75" has a lower brass height than the one in your video.

    Do you have a new 28 gauge sxs in addition to your Dickenson Estate 26 inch barrel with double triggers? What are your favorite 28 gauge shotguns?

    • @finalrise
      @finalrise  Před 11 měsíci +3

      I have a new 'Upland Gun Company' Venus model in 28 gauge I just recently received. It's truly a family heirloom caliber shotgun. I've got 5-6 28 gauge guns I like, including the Dickinson and my Browning 525, but I think this Venus is likely going to take the lead. Couple more weeks and we'll find out :)

    Can we do 12 guage next? haha
    Also, I have the MEC Grabber and when I do the shot the charge bar always seem to place too much shot to where the crimp doesn't work. I always have to dump out about 10 or more shot. Do you have an idea as to why? I have pushed the wad compression all the way down and that seems to help. I shoot 1 1/4 oz loads with 33 gr of Longshot and the WAA12F114 wads.
    Love the product and the videos. I even picked one up for my father-in-law!

    • @finalrise
      @finalrise  Před 11 měsíci

      Haha I honestly don't even own a 12 gauge, but I'm sure I could arm wrestle someone to let us do a video of em on here. Always grateful for the incredible support as well. Thank you!
      As far as the charge bar hiccup, have you weighed the shot amount it throws? I'd make sure that it's within spec to start out. Your wad is rated for 1 1/4 oz loads, so it's either throwing excessive shot, which I'd for sure look into getting dialed in to be safe, or possible wrong wad for the hull you're using? I believe the one you mentioned is for tapered hulls like REM or WIN. I know they have options for straight wall and tapers, and if wrong the wad fit may not be sitting as deep as it should, limiting your ability to finish the crimp.
      Couple things to take a peak at, but I'd start at the charge bar and make sure it's dialed 👊

      Your load column is too tall. Longshot is a "bulkier" powder. Try a different powder or a different wad to change your load height.

      Fwiw, shot is dispensed by volume, not weight.

    7.5's don't seem to break bones well enough for me on pheasants. Especially later in the season when they're feathered up.

    • @finalrise
      @finalrise  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I've had luck with 7.5s on about everything, but never against a 6.5 or 6 when birds aren't coming up in front of my dogs at 25ish yards. Anything in that range and I'll always error on the side of pattern density to increase hits. Always a fan of adapting to conditions and making sure you're as lethal and ethical as possible! Appreciate the comment and view!
