  • Three reshots...I had to do three reshots for this video *facepalm*.
    This time it's not a true one take video, but a "What you see is what you hear" video. I was only able to film with one camera and this is another approach to multi-cam videos that I like more than miming to a pre-recorded audio. Tell me in the comments if you like it or if you want to watch strict one take videos! (I do have 2 cameras, so it's still possible with 2 camera angles)
    So, how did I do it this time? Before I got another camera this was one of my first thoughts on how to do multi-cam videos. With each camera angle I recorded a one take playthrough and after cutting the video I just synced each shot with the respective audio. It was a bit tedious, but this way you hear what is really played in every shot. Everything's real!
    It has one huge advantage which I noticed: I don't have to focus that hard on playing almost perfect. I still tried to and recording those 5 takes took some time too. But it's not as stressful as my usual videos. With this approach I could do a video a week I think or at least every two weeks. Preparation is not as tough and most of the time went into editing the video. Took me 4 days haha. I switched to DaVinci Resolve and took my time to get used to it and tried out different transitions and stuff. The next video probably won't have as much cuts as this one. Setting up was also way easier. With two cameras it's kinda hard to sit really still to get the best footage from both. That's another advantage.
    And why did I do it like this? Well, as you read, it took me 3 reshots. The first time I recorded it again because I wasn't satisfied with my playing. That was still with 2 cameras and one take. Phil Tougas solos are really tough. There's one specific alternate picking run with fast sweeps at 240ish bpm 16th notes. Took me some time to get it tight, and on the first video it was not how I wanted it to be. So I did the reshot. On the next one I had issues with noise on the footage. I have two different lenses and one of them is not as good in low-light situations. Noticed the noise only after shooting. And then on the third reshot I broke the lightbulb of my softbox and had to film with room lighting only. Could only shoot with one lense then. That's when I tried just doing multiple playthroughs mixed to one. Yeah, that playthrough was cursed or something.
    Another story: I've known Nick Padovani, the guitarist and composer of this band, for a while now. Only through Internet though. From the early days of my youtube channel. And then I met Sanjay, the other guitar player, and Stevie, the singer on their last tour with Inferi (those two guys did/do play in that band too!) Had a fun time with them. Really nice guys. Looking forwards to the next time. Aaaand I even played with their drummer, Chason Westmoreland, on my last show where I filled in for The HAARP Machine. He played the drums on that show and we had a nice time hanging out at the festival. Great guy! So yeah, we know each other and this is a totally friendly cover of one of their songs. Nick was nice enough to send me a tab since I requested one. I only had to transcribe the solos of the record. They were still different in the tab.
    Enjoy the video! :)
    (Next video either Necrophagist, Cryptopsy, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Cynic or something else)

    That first solo was 100% improv'd when it was recorded so even I couldn't recreate it 100% like on the record nor would I want to. And here you are, fucking nailing it like a true boss. Considering all the problems you had while making this video, I think you did an outstanding job for all the parts.

    • @KevinHeiderich
      @KevinHeiderich  Před 4 lety +44

      Haha, now that you mention it, that first solo was hard to transcribe. Harder than the one with the fast alternate picking run. No fingering I tried while transcribing made too much sense, even if it's "just" a pentatonic shape. At least that's what I heard. And those tapped slides also didn't make that much sense logically too. But again, it has the feeling of an improvised solo, and in that context that playing totally makes sense. Transcribing those solos was the reason I didn't record this sooner. Had the tab for a while now :D
      (btw I'm a big fan of improvised these solos these days. They are just so in the moment and more alive)
      But man, you got some fast fingers (and some fast alternate picking). I had some trouble connecting that harmonic minor alternate triplet run with the following arpeggio and the big 16th note descending run in the 2nd solo. Alone those three were quite playable but together it was quite a mess for me.
      And another thing which is a huge compliment and something I really appreciate these days: guitar players that have their own tone and sound. There are not a lot of guitar player were I think "hm there's no way I can replicate the sound/playing of that" but you're one of them. I couldn't replicate your tone to save my life (is that saying correct?)
      I'm pretty sure I can spot a random solo from you without knowing it's from you because you have such a distinct 80's shred sound and phrasing, without just being a copy of that era.
      So yeah, while I can play it on a technical level, I couldn't quite get the same tone.

    Love binging your videos when I'm the mood for it man, they're the best metal guitarist videos on youtube imo, especially with the write-up you post in the description on the song's various facets ( production, guitar techniques, your opinion on the music etc)
    I know I've probably said this elsewhere in the comments, but I'd love to hear some original metal from you someday! I don't think there's many players out there who are as technically advanced AND as musically omnivorous when it comes to metal genres!

The way u do it is pretty legit, no complaints at all. Looks cooler too + it's easier for you so it's a win-win for sure. I am soooo looking forward to that der weg einer freiheit cover.

    Hi Kevin,
    I used to, and still do, record my covers like this, save for a couple of songs. To me it seemed more work to record into the computer and then mimic it and, to me personally, it also feels fake doing it like this. Maybe in the future I'll change my mind on this... I did it on a couple of songs though; I got myself a focusrite audio interface and recorded into the computer. Never could get the sounds right, there was a lot of tweaking involved and felt the process of getting everything together in an editing program a long and drawn out affair. Maybe if I'll get the sounds right and the processes involved streamlined I'll be more enthusiastic...
    My mission statement is that I just wanted to do things as simple as possible; learn a song proper, then sit down and record the song I've been practicing in one go. What you see and what you hear is what you get, and you'll get a shot of adrenaline too :-D Sure, some songs require lots of takes, but it's a trial by fire from which you only can get better as a guitar player.
    For my last video I ended up doing two takes for the two different angles, and I think it turned out okay. The audio recorded differs a little bit from each other but "mixed" together and with the real track underneath it, I think it sounds at a minimum, passable :-D

    Amazing, as usual. I really think you should try shooting at 60fps to do justice to your playing.
    Strict one-takes seem unnecessary to me. Lord knows what I'd do if playing became a chore...

    • @KevinHeiderich
      @KevinHeiderich  Před 4 lety +1

      I actually really like the way 25fps look with this shutter speed setting. I think you can see everything fine. The Spawn of Possession video had too much blur. Problem about 50fps is that I can only shoot them in 1080p. (Camera doesn't support 4k 50fps)
      Right now I record in 4k 25fps, so I can zoom in, have some movement and can still render it at 1080p without loss in visual quality. With 50fps I can't do that and the video would be pretty static :(

    This video is excellent and I think if you prefer this recording and editing style, I'd say go for it. Aside from that, I had a quick quick question about this particular guitar. There are a few spots that you manipulated the bridge to dive a note and I'm curious about why you didn't just have the tremolo bar on to start. Do you feel like it gets in the way or something?
    Anyway, killer production again, man. Thanks!
