NEEDS MORE GAIN....Obscura - Clandestine Stars (Cover)

- How about no gain? Yeah, I should have used more, especially in the solo because that's a low output humbucker, but that's what you get when you don't record your DI signal. This is my slightly different eq'd live sound that I used for my show with The HAARP Machine. Wanted to try recording with a low gain sound. Worked for the rhythm stuff but for the solo I should've used a different setting. I should check how to program midi changes from my daw to the axe hehe.
Since Necrophagist and Obscura seem to be my viewers favourite bands I decided to do a cover of a song of Obscuras latest album "Diluvium". It's a cool song. I had more fun with it than I want to admit haha. It has a nasty solo in it which I really dig....but it's pain in the a to play. Like just a tad too fast to be comfortable.
You guys should learn the song too!
Next video will be a cover of a lesser known german band but with the same quality. (Brain Drill meets Aborted....basically)
Enjoy the video!
2:46 that part is insane
This is the song you play your friends when they tell you Kirk Hammett is the best guitar player ever...
lmao... its sad because some people truly believe that
@@SpencerAGuitar I had to argue once with a dude who seriously thought Lars Ulrich is a great drummer... I could pull up CZcams vids of children outplaying that fool all day.
They wouldnt understand technical progressive music like this they would say its just sound and anyone can do random things and wouldn't like it for the yelling and screaming
@@SpencerAGuitar no. Sad is when people says Slash is the best one.
@@FockeWulfFW200 slash is actually good tho, better than kirk hammett. Obviously its stupid saying either of them are the best, but overall slash is way more versatile and better guitarist in just about every way.
Personally, I think the low-gain sound is great for this kind of music since it really helps articulate all the individual notes. Perhaps a smidge more would've been preferable, but I still think it sounds great and you did a killer job, yet again.
Thanks man, yeah it's actually just the solo that "annoys" me. The rest was good, and it was really easy to "mix" that one, because of that low gain sound.
I rarely play the neck pickup because of the difference in output between both humbuckers. Also I didn't think I'll make this many videos with this guitar or even play live with but here we are :)
This perfectly tight & clean playing with little amount of gain is really scared me
Dude low gain rulez if yu got the chops. max respect tho this could not have been easy
Emperor is fairly low gain. Exactly.
Actually, only the solo was really hard. The rest was quite comfortable to play. But that's Obscuras style :)
@@KevinHeiderich well the you still complety rip it haha 🔥😂
you're one of the cleanest players i've ever heard. your playing legit sounds like a studio recording. you deserve more views and recognition
This makes me want to practice so much more.
This just makes me discouraged lmao
@@A992_ you were never going to truly succeed if you use the talent and hard work of others as discouragement rather than inspiration. Kevin is definitely an amazing player, but he's still just a normal human. He just put in the work and got the results. It should be inspiring to know that the "secret" is simple: it's just hard work. It may not be easy, but it's simple. Now let's both get off youtube band play some guitar!
Easily the best track on the record.
Dude your right hand technique is out of this world.
AWESOME, so clean!!! I really love your playing, especially your right hand technique! Could you, please, make a video breakdown about right hand technique and how you approach and developed such an awesome right hand technique? It i'll be so much helpfull!! You're insane!!!
His picking is unparalleled. Also probably my favorite Obscura song. Kevin is legend
Very awesome as usual. I love how nonchalant you seem as your shredding these beast tracks too. I have the Dilivium tab book and tried learning Ekpyrosis...could barely the intro up to speed. Kinda said f**k it and moved onto other things. Seeing this makes wanna go at it again. Thanks for all the inspiration, Kevin. You're an amazing musician!
Try again, and again, and again.......aaaaaaand agaaaaaain. That's the key man. You'll get there ;-)
If you need help, hit me up
It's just such a pleasure to watch Kevin play
Man, this is the perfect amount of gain, the tone has great definition, and as far as I can tell you played this song note-for-note, awesome!
May I ask you what pickups you use for this kind of music?
This guitar has a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge and a Dimarzio PAF Pro in the neck position. I dislike both lol. My other Ibanez has Dimarzio Fusions in it. I actually love them. EQ-wise they are not that special but in combination with the coil split they are aweseom and really versatile :)
@@KevinHeiderich So... the X2N is low output humbucker now? o_0 Your output/gain expectations are as insane as your chops haha!
@@rsa4834 With low output I mean the PAF Pro which I use for the solo. They have a huge noticable difference in output.
@@KevinHeiderich Ah makes sense! Maybe try a Tone Zone in the neck like Michael Romeo does hah.
I'm so glad you're back with the videos. Your playing is super inspirational to me... gotta keep practicing!
Thank you for your kind words :)
And yes, keep practicing, but don't forget to just play. And write music. That's why we're doing it in the end.
Man I'm glad you're back!
Ridiculously tight man :) The lower gain sounds amazing for the mad riffs
Tightest guitarist ever. so glad you're back bro!
Holy shit dude! That's amazing, Well done!
The tone might be even drier than the band themselves intended to, but it is quite delicious. The playing is super disciplined - as always in this channel - but has an eloquent edge to it. Amazing work, man. Now let's get you to ten million subs. THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW
Haha thanks but that many subs? For that boring channel? Naaah, but I would appreciate a few more :)
Best right hand technique on CZcams.
hermosoo, esta canción tiene unos detalles y sutilezas que pasan desapercibidas al escuchar solo el audio. Gracias por compartir
Really awesome job! You Sir are the best example that you don’t need a super fancy guitar and a lot amount of gain to rule!
A REAL KILLER MACHINE, CONGRATS AND THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION
Dude, can't stop watching your videos haha. Amazing talent, cheers brotha!!
And with a 200 euro ibanez gio... This is a great lesson on what's important.
Damn bud. You are a great player. Thank you for sharing
very nice cover man \m/
as for a low gain - i think its just perfect amount for tech.death like obscura/necrophagist
Such control, it's refreshing 🍹
Love it man, great song, great playing!
bro...............................that was fuckin sick
Awesome... you are a great guitarrist.. I miss the ESP M2 :V...Greetings from COLOMBIA
não me canso de ver esse vídeo!! excelente!!!!!!!!!! supremo!!!!
The fact that Steffan plays shit like this and does vocals at the same time is insane to me
The fact is that he cant lmao
your picking is sooooo tight dude! i wish i had that kind of technique :c
Then practice
Damn dude, that was fucking sick, is what I just said out loud.
Diese Perfektion killt mich! Eine Ohrenweide für Noten-Junkies. Sehr geil!
Das zu lesen ist wie ein Gedicht für meine Ohren. Danke dir :) Aber wenn man schon ein cover macht, dann richtig
i really don't know how their vocalist can play this and sing at the same time
Holy fuck this is nuts
Perfect cover !!!
impressive cover Kevin!
Fucking hell! So clean! Who needs gain to hide behind when your this damn good?
That shit at 1:53
Effective german is effective. great stuff, solo is insane
Du... ARSCH 😂 Alter ist das tight. Damn goals!
freaking monster
Killer song, killer cover. Hail from France
Amazing execution!
Mindblown... great job bro. How Long did it take to learn the whole song?
Hey Kevin! Impeccable playing, as always :) I'd like you to ask which song/solo is the hardest of their newest release in your opinion. cheers ImI
clean playing
Wow, besides that you nailed it with low gain while grooving with easy, I loved that you used a cheap guitar ... as if you needed a 3000$ signature guitar to rip or something...
Sounds fine to me, just an ounce more gain like you said in your description would of been nice for the solo... But for the riffs, It wasn't bad at all. A notch up wouldn't do any harm but fine as is!
Awesome!!, cheers bro
Wow great cover bro.
sick
man sounds great maye a wee bit more gain but ur fucking performance is flawless this song is pretty difficult man im learning it right now good job bro subbed n liked
Badass yo!
This is what it sounds like when you can’t find a hi-gain amp in Guitar Center 😂
Playing is absolutely sick though 🤘🏻🤘🏻
what was the amp that u used for this one? I really liked the definition in the tone. Amazing playthrough man. Keep it up!
It was the "Das Metall" model of the Axe fx which is based on a Diezel VH4. Amp settings were Drive 3.5, Bass 6.5, Mid 0, Treble 6.5 with Bright switch engaged and an EQ with a highpass at 200hz, a wide mid cut but not too much, and a lowpass at 6.5kHz. The low mids and mid cut are because of the cabinet impulse I use, which is very bright and to match the recording of that song. No drive in front of the amp. Don't need that with that model. Hitting hard helps with the articulation.
did you manage to record anything from the show with haarp?
would love to hear some !
No, only the stuff you can find on youtube :( Al recorded some things for his vlogs, so that's where you'll see some stuff
this sounds so good, what kind of amp are you using? and how much gain?
Awesome cover! I kind of like that guitar tone. The low gain makes it a bit grittier. What string gauge do you have on that guitar?
Yeah lower gain makes the pick attack stand out in a good way if you also adjust your force accordingly. Gives it more identity than just regular mid to high gain tones. And since everything is heavily edited these days you barely have that on recordings anymore.
String gauge is 11-56 with D standard tuning. My favourite combination of gauge and tuning :)
Man. It sucks to extremely dislike an obscura song but at least I can put your video at 1.25x and enjoy it!
You dislike it? I think it's a pretty fun song. I dig it :)
@@KevinHeiderich lol don't even get me started with my feelings for that album haha
With a gio.. you've got to be kidding me.
You are a great guitar player. What is the reason of playing a low budget guitar like this?
Different reasons:
1.Don't like playing guitars that are too expensive.
2.Sold all of my gear 3 years ago and kept only what wasn't worth selling (this ibanez)
3.Don't have the money for a high quality guitar since I'm in an apprenticeship (still paying for the Ibanez in the background)
4.Though it has high action I still like playing it a lot. Great guitar for metal stuff
5.You don't need expensive gear to sound good (it's all in the fingers)
6.Currently looking for an endorsement and that's why I'm not buying a new guitar yet (Ibanez declined with the reason that they have too many metal guitarists on their roster these days. Sucks because I love playing their guitars)
@@KevinHeiderich Thank you for the detailed explanation. I keep my fingers crossed for quick start of an endorsement for you! Take care!
Low gain ftw
you always had great tone, what do you use as a soundcard?
I use a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 as the interface, and the guitar sound is coming from my Axe Fx :)
@@KevinHeiderich thanks for the answer 🙏
Less than 10k subs???? wtf
que mão direita do caralho.
There's no fun when you're a robot
Hahahgag just noticed 2:30
Your face at 2:30 tho
You play that song fantastic !! What guitar do you play in this video and what's your favourite guitar?
This is a Ibanez GRG170 DX. Puhh, I don't think I have a favourite guitar. I like my other 7 string Ibanez for the stuff I write these days. For fast and technical metal it's kinda uncomfortable but I barely play stuff like that on it. (Talking more about brutal stuff, suffocation or defeated sanity) I'd love to have a strandberg. And maybe a great 8 string again. Couldn't find anything that interested me sub 1000€ so I settled for the 7 string Ibanez (that's in the background) Other than I'm not picky. My guitars are set up with higher action so that makes it easier to play other guitars :)
Hehe, hab gerade gesehen, dass du ja deutsch sprichst :) Danke für deine Antwort und mach weiter so !!
Not bad and you could produce more definition if you wanted to; ebony is the way. Oiled wizard or WR1 matt.
Sorry otherwise cool.
Bro thats a Ibanez Gio?
German band that sounds like Aborted meets Brain Drill.. Cytotoxin maybe? Or are they not "lesser known"?
You're right on the first try haha. They have a decent following here and in europe but I'd say they are still "lesser known". Since we're sort of internet friends and they are quite technical I thought I should do a video. They were nice enough to send me two tabs. I got the first one down and I think I should be able to do another video this week ;-)
@@KevinHeiderich Yeah I'd say they're underrated alright. Saw them live last year, very tight set. Great stage presence as well. Looking forward to your video
Kevin Heiderich really? I thought Obscura is well known because of guys like Christian who were in Necrophagist and such. I could be wrong though.
@@sanjivharikumar we're referring to the band Cytotoxin (see this video's description)
Hellbull89 oh I’m dumb xD thanks!
And this video literally proves that it's the quality of the guitarist, not the guitar that makes the playing nice because ur just using an entry level Ibanez
