Thanks . I like it more than Tamiya's I built years ago. I wish Manufacturers would give more decal options. It's just research , little added expense and would give builders more variety.
I miss the days when we viewed a model with more parts as the better choice. Today were more people are into instant gratification they are really missing out on the true meaning of modeling and I am glad to see there are still the complex models still available for those of us that want the control and are not in a hurry to get to the finish line!
I really like the 'no music but full commentary' approach Andy. Normally skip through your builds as music drove me mad but watched this one throughout with the new approach. Thanks for sharing as always :-)
@Andy Platz are a Japanese model manufacturer/distributor and this kit has plastic from their Girls und Panzer (Anime series) Pz IV D along with some plastic and tracks from Dragon's Pz IV line. The Girls und Panzer series of tank models were designed for the new or occasional modeller so have fewer parts and some nice slide molding. Dragon have provided some of the detail parts like tools to spruce it up. There are lots of other Platz GuP tank models like Stug and M3 Lee so expect some more collaborations. :)
man, this is right on time. today, i've just finished Trumpeters 1/35 Scale Russian T-80B MBT, & my God, what a tedious build, (over 900 parts)! don't get me wrong, it built into a beautiful model, but with the amount of minute parts, (& photo etched at that), this project took me over a week. i'm definitely looking for an 'easier build' for my next project, & this Dragon Panzer IV is a 'possibility'. but i'll probably 'settle' for a Tamiya Soviet KV-II tank. (you can't get any 'easier' than that).
Well damn I never heard of these coming out. Took me by surprise for sure! That is very interesting, and makes sense seeing as Dragon is aiming more for simplified and cheaper kits as of late. But at least this one isn't a bunch of old imperial quality sprues plus a few new ones with a bunch of filling and corrections required.
Panzermeister36 I think these were originally from collaborative kit with Japanese anime girls und panzer. So there might be few more (ex T-34, Hetzer) coming out.
Thanks guys. Adam Mann thank you for the info. I'm just surprised I had never heard of these before. I'll stick with my Panzer IV Ausf.D Vorpanzer super kit; I like a long build. Just curious about what the hell Dragon is doing as of late.
Hey Andy. Building my first piece of armor currently: the 1971 Panzer II by Tamiya. A 13 euro kit for me to try something else than the usual planes. That white highlighting of the panels is a great idea and I think I will be trying that myself! Thanks, great vid!
I have an old Tamiya 1/35 Pz II kit that I'll be putting together soon. That's going to be my first try with your back and white shading technique, and this was very instructional on how to go about it.
As someone who is just going to start out soon (hopefully sometime this month or early next month) I will probably do a "fresh off the assembly line" look and as i get more experienced start doing weathering but dont know about that since I plan on doing 1 or 2 models to see if this is hobby is for me, as for the airbrush stuff i will get a decent one and if model building doesn't is for me I will end up doing small custom painted things. I also find your channel quite relaxing.
the original 3in1 kit is a real sense of acheivement and not beyond a 'beginning' modeller. It was my 5th kit after tamiya A27 ,Jgdpnzr l70,dragon pII a ,marder III and the mkIV 3in 1.It also boosts your confidence, took a week of evenings to build. If painting was my thing i can see the appeal of a well engineered model. But dont leave the 3in 1 on the 'discount rack!
Hi Andy, I really enjoyed the build of the 'new style' Dragon Platz kit of the Panzer IV, I think this is what kits should be like, 170 parts compared to 1200, not hard for me to decide on what I would build. Keep up the excellent work. Les
Great video as always Andy. Little request here. If you manage to find some free time, consider doing a build up on Dragon's M48A3. There is very little build logs in the internet, and it's suppose to be a fairly easy kit. Would love to see how you tackle Vietnam era armor. Cheers !
I just got this kit and although based on Andy's review the kit is beautifully detailed but the box is full of air for the price. I guess I'm used to dragon or other kits with a box completely full of plastic such as the panzer hobby boss/tristar kits. I'm sticking to the kits with thousands of parts. I don't mind the extra work.
Andy. Enjoyed the video but I must comment on your subscriber numbers. Wow! 35K+ That is really impressive and a testament to your approach on video making as well as your modeling technique. When I subscribed I believe you had around 5k subscribers. I had been out of modeling for over 30 years but caught the bug again after watching you and others (Panzermeister36 shout out) on CZcams. Keep up the great work!
Sort of a super detailed upgrade of Tamiya's classic D from the '70s. Might pick this up - got a soft spot for the Ausf D and the previous Dragon D is kind of a pain in the ass.
Good-looking kit, haven't built one in a couple of years, may be time to get one. By the way, I did start modeling again! Loving it! I''m all for lower part counts, one of the main reasons I go for Tamiya kits!
Great idea especially for the beginner who would love to build a Dragon kit but was afraid of the large parts count myself I enjoy the longer builds but also enjoy a quick build between projects all comes down to price especially here in Canada.
This is very interesting! I am quite surprised that Dragon went that way. What surprises me even more is the clash in between modeler's beliefs. Many beg for more and more comlpex builds. Others, just want good ol' Tamiya. I am the second type. Wondering, how this particular kit will impact the market. Usually the Panzer fans are most picky. Always something is off or wrong or from different mod. Now, when your hands are more or less tight with not many possibilities with the fewer parts, how that is going to go... Thanx for your video!
Excellent video Andy, I might be wrong but these Platz kits are reboxed from the Girls Und Panzer Series from Japan and I'm not sure they are reboxed Dragon kits. I do like their simplified construction. Thanks again for everything you do for our hobby. Cheers, Stephen
Scale Model Kit Review this kit is definitely based on the Platz Girls und Panzer release with Dragon tracks and tools. I wouldn't trust what Dragon says on their blurb too much as their translations can be suspect. :P
Considering my first 1/35 scale tank was a 1,000 piece panzer iii, i was scared to do any harder models for a while, but i might consider picking this model.
I've built the Pz IV D kit & detailed is an understatement. The bolt heads to the drive sprocket housing are individual parts. That's how detailed it is. Those PE tool clamp pieces are the devil to assemble. Great kit nonetheless tho.
Dang, I wish I had a store like this near where I live. I would like to get into modeling but I really don't have any stores that I can go to that have a large and diverse inventory like yours. That being said, I love these vids and I can't wait to see more in the future.
That looks really good, I've never built a Dragon kit but I've seen the sprues and reviews and they always seem to have too many parts that are unnecessarily split into smaller pieces when they could achieve the same detail with a lower part count.
Currently putting this kit together, sadly lost tiny bar thing that goes to idler wheel drive. At least its looks fine without it... Took me about 3 hours to assemble bottom half of the lower hull and suspension.. So far the hardest part been backplate/radiator assembly.
Full circle, back to the approximate parts count of maybe 30 years ago, but with greatly improved quality. I think they maybe just realised that not everyone has the skill, time or patience to build a kit up from each nut and bolt
I saw this kit at my LHS a couple of weeks ago and wanted to know if it was the same as the older Dragon Pzr IV D kit in my stash. I couldn't find any information about it until now. The price was lower than some of their recent releases. Thanks for posting this video. I'm a big fan of Pzr. IV tanks so this one will have to be bought. :-)
Yes - if you have need of mega detailed long build it’s worth considering the fairly recent batch of Miniarts latest offerings - mainly Russian but OMG they are super engineered / detailed especially with the kits that come with full interiors ...probably the most detailed kits on the market - not for the faint hearted but stunning production standards ...love to see you attack one of those kits Andy ! Ric
Well I had bought a Dragon 1/35 Panzer IV G Smart Kit, I finished the hull and one side of the tracks a week or 2 after the hull, just now working on the other side of tracks after 2 months, link and length is the closest that I now go to individual links
Great Video Andy. I bought my first Dragon model: their notice is horrible compared to Tamiya or Takom ones. But detail is most of the time excellent. Smart Kits seems to be a good balance of details and "quick" (some weeks) build. Very interesting advices (thinner+tamiya paint to use airbrush). How do you paint roadwheels ? i just bought quickwheels, it may be perfect, but a little to expensive.
Hey! Awesome work! I'm new to models and have a question. I see you don't use primer or anything and I'm wondering why that is. And if you were going to hand paint a model (one of the bandai SW models in my case), would you still not use primer?
i would have preferred the old kit as the idea (i thought) was to take your time building. if i can build it in a day i might as well buy a ready made model.
And Dragon sells that kit for almost the same price that they charge for one of the high part count kits with all the goodies.. Typical Dragon. Great video Andy , as per usual.
Thanks for the videos Andy, another super great job. Say, you mentioned that more frequently you are having customer how want kits with less parts, do you happen to notice if they are like younger guys, new generations? Because if they are like new generations maybe then the manufacturers will stop producing more complex kits, which I happen to like (I'm old). Thanks!
I have to say I really miss the detail of the drivers vision slot that it would be pausible to see the panser glass between the panser slots. In germany the panser glass was lightly green and rumors saying that sometimes the unit didnt havent enoufth spare panser glas so the tank had to move into battle without any protection at all. As far as I had been told the infantery instrucktions on how to fight a german tanks was to aim riffel fire on the drivers vision slot to damage his glass so there was a huge use of the spare ones.
My god the complexity and number of parts of the prior kit is insane. imagine all the extra toxic cement fumes you would breathe in while constructing the more complex model if you don't own a respirator.
whoa. the reason why i stick to tamiya kits is the low parts count for my newbie level but with these dragon/platz ones i'm definitely gonna check them out! how's the price for this one, if i may ask?
