- Do you ever feel like you abandon a language when you do not get to practice it as much as you would love to? Do you ever feel like giving up a language if you feel like you do not have enough time for it?
I wanted to be transparent and show you where I am at with "my weakest" languages: Italian, Russian and Swedish. I have not had as much time as I would love to for them and they have indeed suffered a bit in 2023... Should I give them up completely or what is my plan for them in 2024?
(This video was recorded at the end of 2023 and I thought I would post it earlier, that is why I keep saying things like "next year" referring to 2024)

THANK YOU so much Laura for this video! I love the video for several reasons = #1) Because what you describe is exactly when i experience while “juggling” my learning of 9 foreign languages in the middle of “another life”. My level is not as good as yours in most of these languages - but I “struggle” a bit accepting the reality of a day with only 24 hours …. As I can only do 2 italki lesons a week - I usually select multilingual teachers (I have a few with whom I practice 3 languages in an hours session … ). But YES - my speaking level decreases when I speak less - but my listening level stays about the same - I aim for “touching” (for at least 10-15 minutes of listening or watching a video) daily at least 6-7 languages (and maximize use of “dead time” when driving by myself to a destination). What I also loved about this video is hearing you speak both Russian & Italian (I believe Swedish is our one “non-common” language) - and I do NOT think your speaking level is that different from prior videos of you that I’ve seen speaking those languages - but I recognize the SAME “searching” that I see you do (that I do) when speaking a language that I had been B-2 level in, but don’t get to speak much - but most of the words DO come (and you definitely realize most of the time when a “mixture” with another language creeps in. For me a a learner - seeing YOU “struggle” with that is VERY helpful (and encouraging to me) - even though I know you feel the opposite. That said - YOU DO GREAT with so many languages! - :) Ken

I think learning many languages is awesome, but it is important to keep in mind that if you juggle, it gets harder the more balls you add :D
So relatable Laura! If for some reason you don't feel motivated or have the time necessary, certain languages can take a back seat!
It's happened to me tons of times. With Swedish, I often go weeks and months without speaking it (like now). The first time I speak it again, it feels super weird and my throat cramps up trying to get all the vowels right... but if I then speak it twice in the next 3-4 days, it comes right back.
With Italian, it's purely motivation based. Look, my Italian is basically itagnolo to begin with but if I'm talking to Italians a lot in a certain period of time, that motivation alone gives my Italian an instant boost! But when that period inevitably ends, I speak zero Italian and si ne va 😂
In your case, these languages are probably a tad rusty but when the right moment and motivation come (and they will), your level will return per art de màgia, don't worry! Also, in a real conversation, you'll be able to use the other person's words (which you'll still understand but maybe won't be using actively anymore) and that also makes it easier.

It is ok for languages to take a back seat and when they have they time "to shine" again, well... there will be a few mistakes, but who cares :D

Brilliant video, awesome take on a little discussed topic! Personally, I've learned many languages intensively for a few months and then abandoned them almost completely for a long time due to my duties at work...that has been my big mistake for years, I learn a lot on my long holidays (I'm a teacher) and then as I get back to work I start slowing down and down to a full stop. Don't get me wrong, I always try to review them once in a while by reading and listening to them but it frustrates me to find out I have to relearn a lot of words and concepts before I can dare to approach a speaking partner (I'm a shy learner) and get my communicative skills back on track. It takes a lot of determination and mind power from my part. However, I've had a few relatively successful comebacks, such as with Japanese, Irish and Swedish, though I still don't speak these languages too often at all...
What I mean is one just can't stop learning a language abruptly at an A level and hope to still be functional in it one year or more later, but if you have hit a B level this is indeed possible if you have the determination and with discipline you can get to finally mastering a language (by this I mean reaching an advanced and highly functional level).
This is a list of languages I started out with passionately and then cut short and which I definitely want to come back to and improve a lot:
Turkish, Georgian, Hungarian, Welsh, Paraguayan Guaraní, Dutch, Hindi and Haitian Creole.
Last but not least I can relate a lot to the topics you bring up on your videos and feel really inspired by them. Keep it up!

Really good video, Laura. I kinda abandoned Japanese this year, but it was due to having a baby. So, I needed to put my language learning on halt for a few months. But, I'm ready to study it again, and I actually signed up for an in-person Japanese class!
I also really want to add Korean to my list of languages, but I'm not how that will work out with studying Japanese! I may have a bit more motivation with Korean because I'm fascinated with K-culture, kimchi, and I love K-pop. We'll see!
Have you learned 2 new languages at the same time? If so, how was your experience?
In my experience two new languages at the same time is doable, but stressful and with lots of mixing and less progress. I personally prefer to focus on one new language at a time. If one of the languages is already intermediate, that is a different story. But STARTING two languages at the same time is not for me hehehe

Hola, pues diría que mi nivel pasivo de comprensión es el mismo, pero he empeorado al hablar.
Diría que tengo los niveles siguientes:
- Ruso: comprensión B1, expresión oral A2+
- Italiano: comprensión B2, expresión oral B1?
- Sueco: comprensión B1, expresión oral A1
Pero es muy subjetivo jejeje

The Swedish/Russian confusion is a bit personal to me because it was with these two languages that I broke the "one at a time" rule (because of the availability of language classes) when I was learning them in the 2010s. It wasn't a complete disaster, and I only had limited problems with mixing, but the total progress in either wasn't that great, and even at my peak I could never speak either of them remotely to the level that you are still speaking them now.
Italian is my closest to an "abandoned" language. I learned it for two years nearly 20 years ago, and haven't been back to it since. But, despite appearances, I haven't formally abandoned it - I just haven't got back to it yet!
I was pleased to be able to follow to some extent what you were saying in all three languages, although I had to watch back with subtitles to check plenty of the details!. But it does mean I watched the video twice :)
Finally to get to the point of the video :) - I wouldn't use the word "abandon", but rather "park", by which I mean the language no longer forms part of a regular routine for a period time, but might get reactivated later ("20 years and counting" later, in my case with Italian). But certainly I need to swap my languages in and out - even just to maintain them, I can only build two or three into a routine at any one time.
I actually use the word "park" too when talking about it to others sometimes hehehe

How are you learning Swiss German? My whole family plans to move to Switzerland and even though we are since 5 years in Germany and we speak German like natives, we still cannot unnderstand too much of it 😅 Do you have any resources to LEARN Swiss German? To have at least an A1 before going there
If you are like a native in German, do not worry too much. You will learn it quite fast. It is a different language, but you can think about it like "learning Dutch", it is not that different, so you will not struggle that much. Also, everyone speaks standard German, so you will be able to communicate. Good luck :)
I always learn a language for 1 or 2 months, then give up on it, and get back to the old languages I had to learn. This works too 😅

It's funny that you mix Swedish and Russian of all languages. I'm interested in Spanish and Italian to an equal measure, and worry I'll mix them up in an awkward "Spanitalian" if I try to learn both. Have you had any such problems considering you already speak numerous romance languages?
I think mixing languages is very natural, specially when one of them is at a beginner level. When I was starting out with Italian, I mixed it a lot with Spanish. But over time, the better I got the less I mixed it. I still mix it sometimes though and that is ok :)

Ciao, secondo me hai un italiano ottimo a dispetto del fatto che ultimamente non gli hai dedicato molto tempo ❤ i pochi errori che hai fatto sono tutti trascurabili e sono relativi al lessico e non alla grammatica, per cui ti assicuro che chiunque potrebbe capirti. Hai anche una dizione naturalissima che molti studenti della lingua potrebbero invidiarti. L’unico neo che ho notato è che a volte pronunci qualche consonante come fosse inglese: per esempio la [l], che suona un po’ velare. Ti consiglio di pronunciarla “più in avanti” proprio nel cavo orale. Per il resto, le vocali sono perfette e sembrano da madrelingua! Scusa per questo giudizio non richiesto, ma non c’è nessun intento negativo, anzi, tengo a valorizzare il tuo studio, che si vede esserci stato. Per il resto invidio invece la tua fluidità in svedese e mi piacerebbe chiederti: che mezzi hai usato per arrivare a questo livello? Sarai almeno un B1/B2? Grazie se risponderai e in bocca al lupo con il tuo apprendimento linguistico così variegato! 🎉 ti seguo con piacere.

Per lo svedese ho usato dei podcasts: "Simple Swedish podcast" e "lätt svenska med Oskar". Ho ascoltato ogni giorno almeno 10 minuti (spesso di più). Il metodo naturale è incredivile!!! Se parli tedesco, lo svedese non è "così difficile"
"Forgetting a language" is normal, especially when you do not practice it! Even native speakers start forgetting the languages they spoke their whole life when they move out of their motherland and start becoming fluent in a different language. It's only natural! Learning a few languages at the same time is very fun, but as you said, we need to be realistic when it comes to time. I prefer to keep my focus on 1 language (Japanese) and learn it as much as I can during the week, and then spend 15-30 minutes each learning Korean and German every day

I wouldn't say your Russian fluency is weak. At times you mess with the endings, but I have no difficulty whatsoever understanding you 100%. Italian is good, too, secondo me ))
That is so kind, thanks! I still can use those languages (some better than others, Swedish is mostly passive by now), but my level got worse due to using them less. It is what it is, but I just want to make that transparent :)

hehehe well, you can apply it to languages a bit too. It is as though when you start two new languages, two others get "burnt" somehow, so they sort of get damaged haha
