You’ve definitely made my day…. Not even when I’d studied English long time ago, I couldn’t have learned that much … you really know what you’re doing… it’s so good to find someone who knows one’s territory, speaking with authority… kudos
Thanks for watching Luis!
Yes, that is the full pronunciation. But Americans tend to do a lot of reductions of function words, such as this one, and many dictionaries don't cover those pronunciations. Try using this reduction, it will sound great!
Shot cuts
0:20 be verbs
1:13 has
1:35 be verbs
3:57 have
6:25 will
9:07 had and would
10:57 did
Excellent presentation.
After so many years of learning English, I have to say that I have never been aware of contractions, wow, I see how different and natural you can sound by using them. Thank you a lot, Rachel!
You're welcome!!
Yes, that can happen. I would focus more on making it a light sound than worrying about if it is voiced or unvoiced. If you worry about that too much, the sound could get heavy and stop the flow of air a little bit.
So complex, but it is extremely useful in conversation!Thank you so much,Rachel.
I watched this lesson a few years ago. Now I'm back to review it. Thank you Rachel you are the best English pronunciation teacher ever.
Thank you so much Rachel for make this learning so easy and natural to pronounce, I took a pronunciation class 2 years ago and I couldn't learn so well like now, instead was very confusing.
Good question. I tend to separate sounds from length since length depends on stress. So I would say it has the same sounds, but will most likely be quicker. Of course different people speak at different paces.
The most beautiful thing you have as an English teacher is your seriousness combined with joy
Hi Rachel! this video is what everyone could want from a TEACHER and you're the only one who thought about it. You're the best TEACHER forever. Congratulations.
It's very nice what you do, because of you, of ur many video, i'm a real english-speaker. Thank you !
From Ivory Coast !
I am american and a native speaker of english. Not sure how I eneded up on these videos, but I find it kind of fascinating to watch someone break down the sounds of english and explain them. Also, I've never realized how many contractions we have and how often we use them without a second thought O_o
I have noticed some esl people tend to have a hard time knowing when to use contractions. After watching this, I can't blame them. I've head someone say "I haven't money" and other similar misuses of contractions.
Wait how is "I haven't money" wrong? I mean in British English it should be fine right?
I spoke English for 8 years with thick Russian accent; It's about to end if I keep watching and practicing!!! Thank you SO much, Rachael!
I love your videos, Thank you! I wish I had these in school, I struggled so hard in English classes throughout school. excellent teacher!
Thanks Ms. Ranchel! You are drop-dead gorgeuos in that hair style. I love your videos.
Perfect class, Rachel. Couldn't be any better.
Plus, your hais is nice too.
Cheers from Brasil.
Thank Rachel, so much for your lessons. God bless you and your family.
That's one of a kind educational video!
I've searched for a similar video or even an article to list all and I haven't found any.
Thanks a lot for your time and your efforts, really appreciate that.
Thank you Rachel, it was very very helpful!
Thanks for the suggestion, Daniele!
This video is very helpful.
You're the best English Teacher.
Maravilhoso seus vídeos teacher!...estou fazendo uma maratona com seus vídeos e aprendendo muito!
Great Thanks from Egypt
OMG....., i've just known about the contractions of "it's = it has" and "what's = what does". Now i fully understand why they wrote "it's been a long time" i used to think it was " it is been a long time" so i got stuck on it, i thought that "what the hell is that grammar" :-( Because of you now i can answer many questions that i was unable to answer, HAHAHA thank you so much, you mean the world to me :)
I just love you! I am learning English with you...and I'm so happy! Thank you!
I like how you enunciate the words, that's how every teacher should do (in any language, i mean). Good job.
I have no idea how I got to this video, but I am an American from Wisconsin. Listening to her made me realize that really it depends on where you're from and how the people around you speak. Instead of saying "shil" for "she'll", I say "she'll" as in "shield". Without adding the "d" at the end of the word "shield", that's how I pronounce "she'll".
You're the best english teacher ... thank you so much
You're welcome!
@MicahMischief Hi Micah, it's just a matter of how much you want to reduce them. You'll hear a wide variety of pronunciations from native speakers (you've probably noticed!)
muito boa a sua aula. Você ensina a verdadeira pronuncia de uma forma muito boa. Obrigado. God bless you...
1) Yes, I was born in the US
2) Just slightly
3) You want the use the schwa sound in sentences. But if you're just saying the letter on its own, then you say AY.

Hi, Rachel! I wonder how native speakers pronounce nouns with th-endings in plural form. I have some difficalties in hearing them. Thanks.
The word "Path" has the soft "th" at the end, but when you pluralize it "Paths" you harden the "th", like when you pronounce the word "that". The same with "Moth".Those are the only 2 I can think of off the top of my head.
gunjunky7520 Thank for your answer but I guess there are much more similar words. I didn't think about these two ones but I met "cloth, month, oath and youth." Good luck!
Павел Скоробогатов Ok. "Cloth" in spelling becomes "clothes". Your "th" is hard (tip of the tongue against your top front teeth) and your "s" sounds like "z". Oath keeps it's soft "th" sound (top front teeth pressed down onto the top of the tongue) when pluralized. Same with "months".
Now "youths" can be slightly different regionally in the US. Most people I know say it with the soft "th". I think there are areas where some people say it with the hard "th" and the "s" pronounced "z". People who say it this way will generally say the word slower emphasizing every bit of that "- ths" combination. If you are from New York city, the whole word becomes shortened to "yutes". Pronounced without any "th" and clip the "t". If you want see a good example of regional American accents rent the movie "My Cousin Vinnie." There is a funny bit about "yutes".
gunjunky7520 It would be better to listen to somebody speaking.
Павел Скоробогатов yes it would.
Thanks for the lesson. You remind me of Kate, from Lost lol
Hahaha that's true , she looks pretty similar to her in this video
