    You’ve definitely made my day…. Not even when I’d studied English long time ago, I couldn’t have learned that much … you really know what you’re doing… it’s so good to find someone who knows one’s territory, speaking with authority… kudos

  • @rachelsenglish
    @rachelsenglish  Před 11 lety +32

    Yes, that is the full pronunciation. But Americans tend to do a lot of reductions of function words, such as this one, and many dictionaries don't cover those pronunciations. Try using this reduction, it will sound great!

    Yes, that can happen. I would focus more on making it a light sound than worrying about if it is voiced or unvoiced. If you worry about that too much, the sound could get heavy and stop the flow of air a little bit.

  • @rachelsenglish

    Good question. I tend to separate sounds from length since length depends on stress. So I would say it has the same sounds, but will most likely be quicker. Of course different people speak at different paces.

    I am american and a native speaker of english. Not sure how I eneded up on these videos, but I find it kind of fascinating to watch someone break down the sounds of english and explain them. Also, I've never realized how many contractions we have and how often we use them without a second thought O_o
    I have noticed some esl people tend to have a hard time knowing when to use contractions. After watching this, I can't blame them. I've head someone say "I haven't money" and other similar misuses of contractions.

  • @MorganEhlenfeldtisquiteshmexy

    I have no idea how I got to this video, but I am an American from Wisconsin. Listening to her made me realize that really it depends on where you're from and how the people around you speak. Instead of saying "shil" for "she'll", I say "she'll" as in "shield". Without adding the "d" at the end of the word "shield", that's how I pronounce "she'll".

    Hi, Rachel! I wonder how native speakers pronounce nouns with th-endings in plural form. I have some difficalties in hearing them. Thanks.

    • @gunjunky7520
      @gunjunky7520 Před 9 lety

      The word "Path" has the soft "th" at the end, but when you pluralize it "Paths" you harden the "th", like when you pronounce the word "that". The same with "Moth".Those are the only 2 I can think of off the top of my head.

    • @user-ce5iu4hq3d
      @user-ce5iu4hq3d Před 9 lety

      gunjunky7520 Thank for your answer but I guess there are much more similar words. I didn't think about these two ones but I met "cloth, month, oath and youth." Good luck!

    • @gunjunky7520
      @gunjunky7520 Před 9 lety

      Павел Скоробогатов Ok. "Cloth" in spelling becomes "clothes". Your "th" is hard (tip of the tongue against your top front teeth) and your "s" sounds like "z". Oath keeps it's soft "th" sound (top front teeth pressed down onto the top of the tongue) when pluralized. Same with "months".
      Now "youths" can be slightly different regionally in the US. Most people I know say it with the soft "th". I think there are areas where some people say it with the hard "th" and the "s" pronounced "z". People who say it this way will generally say the word slower emphasizing every bit of that "- ths" combination. If you are from New York city, the whole word becomes shortened to "yutes". Pronounced without any "th" and clip the "t". If you want see a good example of regional American accents rent the movie "My Cousin Vinnie." There is a funny bit about "yutes".
