You... really didn't know about Venus's Flytraps? They're incredibly common, my family got one when I was 10 from I think a hardware/outdoor supply store and I did a report on them. You should also look up pitcher plants and the sundew, both also carnivorous plants. There are others, too.
Even if it did, it would open AFTER IT'S DONE like you said, and the whole point was to see the process partway through... what is with these silly questions lol
you know, I've been gardening for years with very great success. hardly ever have plants die. but, I never sanitized the scissors 😂 now I just feel dumb. I had a venus fly trap, and it died, but i think it was more due to the watering / sunlight aspect, or it not going dormant properly.
Definitely more likely to be one of those issues. It's not a guarantee you will give a plant a systemic issue. But it's wayy easier to prevent a problem, than it is to fix a problem.
No. How would it? WHY would it? A few critters out there engage in suicidal behavior, usually for the sake of their offspring, but how would that happen here? Just wondering though, what made you think of that?
Not only the slug mucus is protective but as being an animal that relies on mucus -like stuff, it might also have a different resistance to acids compared to insects
I used to, too... I haven't had one in a while but I do garden now so maybe I should try again. I think it might have a lot to do with how they're put in tiny pots and never transplanted, and people tend to forget the "plant" part of them. That, and I think we all triggered some of the traps for fun, and that's terrible for them.
shortly before my VFT went into dormancy for the winter this last year, i nipped and opened a trap that contained a lady beetle for about 4 or so weeks. i'm doubtful that artificial light was affecting your trap's digestion rate because mine's an outdoor and its digestion was about as slow, but harder-shelled beetles aren't recommended for carnivorous plants because of how tough the elytra can be to break down 😅 so maybe that's on me! nice video, i'm glad to see so many venus flytrap videos coming up and i hope yours is bringing you as much joy as mine is for me 🎉
It stopped consuming the slug when the acids leaking caused enough damage to signal the plant to shut down secretions. Artificial light doesnt cause incomplete digestion.
A piece of meat or another small animal would have been far more digested. The plant probably barely got any nutrients from the slug due to its mucus/slime protecting the body from the digestive juices.
Most people don't realize that the traps only open and close about 5 to 7 times before they die, so they play with the traps, just to see the closing mechanism.
I’m not a botanist so excuse me if this is stupid, but I’m pretty sure it’s the slug’s mucus that kept it safe. That’s what lines our stomachs to keep the acids from burning us from the inside out so it makes sense that the trap would struggle to dissolve it if at all.
The reason it wasn't digested was because the slug has inhibitors in its slime to protect it from the digestive enzymes and the slime also forced alot of the fluid out of the trap causing it to burn itself. At least that's my theory 🤷♂️
Growers choice 4200k cmh bulbs are almost an identical match to sunlight, including uv and ir. I've noticed huge plant health increases from switching to cmh from led.
As long as your artificial light is (uva/uvb) adequate for the plant, that shouldn’t be the issue. I think it’s more likely that the digestion was slowed down due to energy shifting towards new growth. That and you mentioned the digestive fluids leaking and burning the plant. "Today were gonna open a special mystery box"
It’s very amazing that with time something like a slug can be melted if it stays in the plant’s trap for a long to
The mucus layer on the slug probably also effected the digestion rate
In the air(in a jar, for instance) a dead slug will decompose to mostly water in about a week.
Maybe the mucus protects the slug similar to mucus inside the stomach. Just a theory
