- Here is a list of our personal favorite Commodore 64 songs. There were plenty to choose from, but these are the ones that stood out the most to us. The C64’s sound chip is the SID chip, which was known at the time for being very revolutionary and distinct from the competition.

As an 80s kid I'm glad this was the first kind of computer music I was exposed to. Many fond memories of the Commodore 64 thanks to my dad.
This is the kind of music i feel extremely nostalgic for, but i was born in 2005.
80s kid here too, you gotta have been exposed to it to appreciate it and even love it. My wife can't stand it...

@@phoenixyt124 I get it, the 80s is like the new 60s....I mean I'm an 80s kid and collect old Blue Note jazz vinyl records which are from well before my time and use only electron tubes in my amp....I guess having to make use of the limitations of the available technology gave way to incredible creativity and stunning results. Or look at hiphop, it was the limitations of the AKAI MPC that "created" the golden age of the genre. The C64/SID chip witnessed here is another prime example. Just my theory, of course.
The first time I heard the Turbo Outrun intro my jaw dropped.
IMHO, it's by far the best in this lineup. Sounds as though it was from an arcade machine. Real mastery of the SID chip.

Martin Galways Ocean loader 1 really started the ball rolling and still one of the best even today...
yeah and there are so many great tunes overall, a top 100 would be too short. And that's not counting today's music which also deserve their top.
I was lucky that I experienced the evolution of the vic20 c64 back in the day...and the ocean loader just blew me away..
Usagi Yojimbo. Such an epic tune. Full of oriental mystery. Yet completely original. Pure Genius.
easy to see why the SID is still used, it's such a unique sound and as distinguishable as a 303 bass
-No "Last Ninja"? No "Rambo First Blood Part II"? Anyway, it's all subjective because what I think is awesome is different from what other people think is awesome.- Oops! Meant to post this as a general comment!
What I meant to say was that Bob Yannes, the guy who invented the SID chip said in an interview that he originally wanted to have *32 VOICES* (!) but there was not enough space on the die and not enough time to figure out a different way to do it. Can you imagine what types of tunes would have come out if the SID had 29 extra voices to play around with? Yikes!

@@magicmulder I guess his imagination was bigger than the available space on the silicon die. But, Bob Yannes went on to design the Ensoniq synthesizer and co-found the company of the same name so in a sense he did get what he wanted.
Hadn't heard the Magic Johnson one before. SID goes funky! I like it.

True. For ringtone I use Robin of the Woods though. It cuts through everything.

It's funny, Bubble Bobble is one of my favourite games, and I'm a massive fan of Tim Follin. And yet I don't like his Bubble Bobble music on the C64 and Spectrum. They're nice pieces of music, but the changes he made to the tune irritate me because I think the original is perfect and doesn't need improving! LOL
Bubble Bobble sounds better on C64 than Amiga.
I analysed the machine code of the game for hours until finding a patch for unlimited lives. Unfortunately, my patch did seem to have side-effects, making the game block on higher levels...it was one of the dearest games to me.... I and friend played it together

the c64 is a real beauty, such an original sound. i love the megadrive the most but c64 is a close second

Some good tunes in here that I was unaware of, as when my power supply broke on my C64 in 1987 I could not use it anymore.
My favorites are the ones composed by Jeroen Tel like Supremacy, Iron Lord and Myth.

My personal favorites are Afterburner, Alloyrun and Alternative Fuel. They are by Jeroen Tel.

Amazing tunes back when there was really nothing much to go by in the Home entertainment system even expensive PC's had a beeper for many years before sound cards were a thing and the C64 and its amazing SID chip rocked the house and gave breath and Life to Sooo many cool games and they did ALL that with next to no Resources like memory (a mere 64k thats not even a normal Picture size !)and with minimum computing power.
The most impressive imo is that those who did the music was like 15 years old +- some years. coding theire own music routines and made the music in assembler. Talk about hardcore 👍😀
They were more +/- 18 yo. This is actually wrong for the first era : Whittaker (26 in 1984), Hubbard was more than 30, Grey and Lowe were beetween 20 and 30, etc.

Oh good old times, although I was amazed that Turrican 2 wasn´t in the list, would be even in my alltime favourite top3, anyway thx for bringing back sweet memories of my childhood days

Usagi, Hypa Ball, Thai Boxing ...
The Arkanoid tune and Outrun tune are the best out of these in my book.
The hiscore tunes from Parallax and Monty On The Run were great as well
These might have been some of the best GAME sids, but there is a lot of great shit on the DEMOSCENE as well. Not to mention the epic Ocean loader tunes.

Some of my sid favorites are Gauntlet 3, Black Lamp (Title Screen), Ghouls N' Ghosts and Panther

Bubble Bobble's composer is Tadashi Kimijima. But I get it, Peter Clarke recomposed it for the C64.
Rob Hubbard also didn't write the melody for Commando although I do prefer his take on it. Same with Golden Axe

Top Ten, there are thousands, and some of the very best are independent artists, not found in any game... People are still making great music and demos even now... maybe on SID C>64 Emulators, but still - great sound and great music ! :-)
Nothing beats Arkanoid's music IMHO simply it is the best C64 music ever

not surprising Jeroen Tel being at No.1. I would consider also Savage from his repertoire. my favourite one.
Sanxion loader and title, Delta and Rambo loaders, Ocean software loader, Last Ninja. Game music dominated my teen life more than real music did, and that's before the amiga and ST demo scene was born
Monty is the clear winner composition-wise (although IMO the high score music is even better) but Commando will always be a favorite for its sound design.
For me the best is intro( last ninja 3),the (second Golden Axe ) the Sid is fantastic chip thanks Robert Yannes👍
Nice compilation :-) Some of these are new to me. Never heard the C64 version of Golden Axe before - it's really good and I can see why it's your number one! My favourite C64 tune is Ocean Loader 3! :-) Fans of the Commando and Monty on The Run tunes should check out the excellent Spectrum versions by Frantisek Fuka (aka 'Fuxoft').

Golden Axe is an adaptation from the original arcade by You Takada, a great one but not an original composition.

Ahh Bubble Bobble is a good choice.
Some of these choice are fairly bland, there are better choices. MY personal fave is Ghosts'n'goblins. It's on my gym/running tracks.

I feel like if you cleaned up the Arkanoid theme a little it could totally be used as a background sample for a modern rap song.

Yeah i know, this top 10 is kind of a joke regarding the mighty mighty *DELTA* from Rob Hubbard, Better dead than Alien, Deel, Skate or die, Hawkeye + Loader, etc etc but at least Golden Axe was in ^_^

Hawkeye was never released outside of Europe though. These guys are Americans, so obviously they wouldn't have known about that game.
