You hit the nail on the head... he's getting up there in age. A ton of top pool players say that Efren is one of the best ever... that's a huge compliment in itself.
Just this year, at age 68, Efren beat Alex decisively At Derby City 1-Ball. His play was a little bit spotty but he was doing magic shots throughout the match. His play is a bit spotty at times at this point only a few weeks away from his 69th birthday he's still a good bet to make the semifinals in any tournaments he plays.
We should cherish Danny's commentary. He's one of the last of his era. Soo humble, great humor, & he's invariably correct esp. on one pocket. Such a very good guy. Nice that Mark & others show Danny soo much respect too!! Tournaments should get doing commentary Bobby 'Cotton' LaBlanc too. He's super, just like Danny. Cotton has been on TAR.

It's sad that we don't see older but great players anymore. Only Efren and Strickland seem to be still active in this sport. I believe the problem is that they got their ultimate accolade too early in life when they're still in their prime. They became too conscious, or too afraid, of their "Hall of Fame" reputation tarnished by being beaten by young players. The great Joe Louis deserve being "the greatest boxer of all time"; he fought every great contender until he's too old for his sport.
It would be a nice thing to see more older players. However, age does become an issue. Efren is a mere ten days younger than I am three weeks from age 69. So imagine my wonderful surprise at seeing Efren playing Alex in 1-Ball and playing up to his old standard of play. However, there were some missed because his accuracy is not always what it was. It isn't sloppy play.
When you see a great match like this it makes you wonder how the sponsors and promoters can't put serious money up like golf, poker or tennis to get it on cable at least. Put a half a mill up and like a Mosconi Cup format.
Squeegied 3rdeye because they dont make much money of sponsoring. They put sponsoeship money expecting a bigger return on sales etc.. Its just not there.
@@richhenry7540 It all changed once the cigarette companies stopped. All the would-be watchers are potential customers and barflies. Same thing with snooker
One of tha commentators have mentioned an Efren win on a pro tournament few weeks ago, it was the Bergen Open, Efren played unbelievable well, he won over Bustamante in the semi and demolished Feijen at the final. At age of 59....
Danny was a great player, a hall of famer....the only thing is he has this old guy 'I forgot more about pool than any of you will ever know about pool' thing goin on which can be annoying at times.
Hi. Efren to some looks an Eagle Eye but since his eye got operated or lasered years ago, it wasn't as 100% as it used to be. Yes, he can still win tours but he's only 90%. Amazingly, despite his eyes not 100% anymore, he plays still good and considered as one of the Best Living legends n pool history (world). Pagulayan is a Filipino too. Lots of younger guys wants to be with the best and learn more from the best. Easiest way? Team Up with efren Reyes, or at least beat him. Amazing thing about Efren, he's so humble. I think, he even lose a match as a give away to new Filipino players to be recognized especially in the US and Euro circuits. Best player for me is Efren the Magician ..
instinct ...I find that myself an average player 40 years old, although my eyes are 20/20 ,they are not nearly as sharp as they ,at 27 years old , used to be?.... but instinct from being there so many times is increased. I hope that makes sense..lol
In my twenties and early thirties, I had 20/10. I'm 60+ now and have 20/20. I'm always disappointed when the doc tells me I have 20/20 because it seems so darn bad compared to what I once had. LOL.
They mentioned it about 10 minutes prior, but nobody saw it. I think Alex did, because he slid it over after the shot. Would have expected a guy of his integrity to call the foul on himself
Yes Sir, Mr. Diliberto you are imminently correct, twas ever thus. People that know pool have ZERO problem with Danny Diliberto saying anything he pleases about anything concerning cue sports. The man HAS forgotten more about pool than 99% of good pool players will ever know. So when I read these comments knocking Danny for being a pedantic taskmaster (which he is), I know what's what... their tell is showing.
umm yea during the rack of the 5th game at 29 minutes in efren just gains 4 points boosting him to 6 and im not exactly sure why.. it goes back down just kinda funny
Efren looks pretty frustrated over that last shot. He tries it three times and misses. I guess there are some shots that even the gods don't feel comfortable over.
damn near the 21 minute mark, efren tries to go three rails for the 7, hits it bad, but the magic rack saved him and let him see a full 7 ball. alex immediately removes the rack haha
pretty tight pockets, you what? there like buckets, id like to see em play on a snooker table from the 80,s, now they were tight pockets! these bucket pockets are easy!
yes, and on top of that he is such a nice funny easy going person, i had the change to chat a bit with the guy at the last canadian championship in quebec city just a fantastic athlete

strickland, reyes, pagulayan. notice how unlike the very slow players of today, they have a certain rhythm and finish off the table if the balls are wide open, no need for a 30 second clock.
ure probably wrong, he's really popular here as a bystander in a suburban village (Signal Village) here in Taguig City, small part of Metro Manila, long before he became a champion
