  • Hello everyone
Today I will compare Norway vs USA on
who is the greatest country in the world?
I want to be clear that not every single thing in Norway is 100% perfect
and USA is not the worst country in the world by far.

      @TullaRask Před 3 lety +1

@Hei Dinglepop You're living a dream. All people who work with this kind of subject in Norway, says network is very important. On the other hand you won't get a highly educated position if you're not qualified.

    • @westerneurope1752
      @westerneurope1752 Před 3 lety +1

In small places and towns - network in order to get a job might be important. But in greater cities - the best way to get a job is through recruiting agencies. Major companies often use English as a company language - which means the language barrier is not a problem. Nevertheless - it will always be an advantage to learn the language. The most important thing for a foreigner to get a job in Norway, is education and skills - not where you come from. If you lack education however - you will have some bigger problems getting a job.

Great video, should have more views for sure.
GDP per capita really doesn't tell you all that much. When there's just a small amount of people making most of that money, then, what does it even matter. Doesn't affect normal people at all, how rich the richest are(who're pushing the gdp per capita up). Median wage is a much better way to see how an economy is really functioning.
In GDP per capita it's very even, and some years Norway is on top, some years the US is over Norway, all depending on the price of the dollar vs the krone, and other stuff like that. But with the median wage Norway is at $51,489 while the US is at $43,585. Clearly a difference.
You showed this by also including wage inequality. But I feel like the world in general is too focused on GDP per capita, when in reality it's a poor way of understanding a country. It also misrepresents poorer countries because a lot of their economy is hidden(don't pay tax) and thus is not counted in the GDP per capita. Not a criticism to your video in specific, just a thought about GDP per capita.

PPP (purchasing power parity) is a better comparison.
If an American asks whether you've been to the US, ask them if they've been to Norway; most wouldn't be able to find it on a map.
Americans have no problem with a socialised education system, a socialised military, a socialised police force etc. but as soon as you mention socialised healthcare, you are called a communist. And this by a country where every school child has to go through the ritual of swearing allegiance to the flag and the republic, just like they do in fully-fledged communist states.
Canada used to feature near the top of those UN tables.

We have been nr #1 on the human delelopment index for like 35 years now. I often argue that the human development index is the only way to measure freedom. The U.s lists nr 18 today. And on that list there is often a huge gap between nr 18 and 19 on that list or nr 1 and 2... :) Go figure out the difference: Nr 1 Norway and nr 18.. The U.s.a.. ;)

Thanks for this video. In from Lithuania and our political leaders and high profile public faces tend to spout america great propaganda using nr1 economy and military power as an example. This actually scared me since I realized that majority of Lithuanians have no clue how USA looks from the inside, there's no coverage on USA in that light. What's scary that these politicians can take Lithuania on the same neoliberal path that USA is. Which means destruction of many societal goods.
So I've been brewing idea of launching channel to shine some light on USA , but naturally it would be negative and given informational war with russian propaganda many could think that I'm russian plant , since USA is quite horrible in some cases like those streets of drug addicts... So I was looking for an angle and your video gave me one.
In some of these lists we rank higher then USA already, on top of that Lithuanian youth apparently happiest in Europe this year, contrast that to USA school shootings and the facts that they have to practice what to do in case of shooting in school, I think I have a case here to work on, just pure statistics.
We might not be number one but we're already better then USA and maybe one day we will be on the list sealing places for happiest country.

The problem is the use of the term "greatest", it can easily be misunderstood and manipulated to highlight something that is not confirmed by fact checking. A rough (and foolish) comparison is the "F-word", verbally it is very useful to use, to emphasize a significant point or specific meaning. Used incorrectly in the situation, it will backfire on the user and the arguments the person puts forward. The United States is a very large contingent, but proclaiming it as a paradise on earth is stretching it too far.

@@TullaRask Keeping them poor, uneducated, and at the mercy of predatory employers. The US has a huge gap between social and economic classes and it's extremely difficult to change class from the one you're born into, social mobility is very low. Here in Norway we could just chose to not work for Amazon or Walmart or whatever, but they don't have that choice so these employers can treat their workers more or less however they want, which is why both of those companies are effectively banned here. You can't just get a good education and change your class that way either because a good education in the US costs a lot of money, and I mean a LOT. So your family is poor, maybe you live in one of the many towns that lost their industry, everyone there is addicted to opioid based pain killers because of predatory pharmaceutical companies and a cynical medical industry that props it up. You're stressed all day, probably have some mental health issues that you can't afford to do anything about, and you have to try to get a scholarship to have even the slightest chance to escape and do something with your life. That makes things very difficult, often even impossible. Whatever you do don't get pregnant, many places in the US abortion is illegal and giving birth in a hospital costs around 10.000 USD assuming there are no complications, so your life is pretty much over if you're poor and get pregnant too early. There are very few unions, so you're not going to get paid well for most jobs you can get without an education. And so on and so forth. If you're poor in the US it's extremely likely you'll stay poor, everything is stacked against you, on purpose to benefit employers, it's the inevitable result of hyper capitalism.

To provide some depth though. People who are very sick and dependant on very expensive drugs, might be refused the expensive treatment by their docs because some pharamceutical companies basically eat money like it grows on trees. They think sick people will always pay. The norwegian parliament isn't willing to pay everything they say, so sometimes people might be refused. The government also frequently tell pharmacies to give people the cheaper version of a drug if available. I know this because I have cancer and some people suffering from my decease go abroad to get treatment not approved in Norway, take on extensive depth and for some reason thinks the norwegian healthcare system will help them pay the bill when they can't work. But I guess people with a death threat on them, will do whatever it takes. I never would though.

Some people don't realize there is a difference between what the state has approved as a drud to be used, but don't want to pay for, so even if the doctors first say no, you can pay for your selv. That means the treatment will be safe and you will have your family around you. You will have the possibility to complain if somethong goes wrong, and it's likely to be cheaper in total with transport, hotel etc.
I'm not going to say that's always so. I suspect most people in the end travel somewhere for a treatment not approved at home. Some might be a approved in another scandinavian coutry you trust, but some is being treated without really knowing for sure if this is ok. It's not only expensive, but it might also be the last treatment option you have. So you come home with a depth you can't pay and a galloping disease. Now the state will not pay for your treatment because it's not approved here. Lets hope you have family who can just refuse your inheritance when you die. Being sick myself, sometimes I just wish people would realize that this is all they have hot and make the best out of it. What is the last thing on your bucketlist? Do that or sitt by the TV watching your favourite movie for the n'the time. I will probably be spending my last buck on a delivery of food from Foodora and a great movie in my hospital bed.

@Kevin Sullivan Well, we could compare the USA with Europe (550 million people). It's health care everywhere here in Europe. No, Norway is not perfect, but if a Norwegian political party said they would adopt the health care system in the USA in charge with fewer taxes, they would not get many votes. Why is that? Because we are stupid brainwashed socialists? Or maybe because we see our system works equally for everyone. Believe it or not, but there are also economic benefits with our system due to less crime, but more importantly, healthy productive citizens. And, we don't need everything in every hospital.
My answer to this video was about the economic part of it. Why does the USA use quite different numbers in a healthcare budget than European countries? @Jan Petter Mathisen tells me I am wrong. He is probably right in his point of view because there is quite new and up-to-date technology here in Norway, but the hospitals are specialized so we don't need everything everywhere as you do in the USA. Because it's your insurance who tells you what hospital you may use. Then the hospital should of course be prepared for everything. In Norway, we use the hospitals we need. For free Sometimes with help of a helicopter. That's also free.

I wouldn't care paying lots of taxes in order to live good, safe and happy. The USA folks has a bias about money and lust and stuff like that that I would never bear it. Norway seems pretty good, the only downside I see is the language.

It should not be a big problem as everyone learns English from them starts watching cartoons, in Norway there is little dubbing of movies "everyone" speaks English

What..?? Norwegians have their own language .. And lots of English was formed by Viking invasions to England. American English is not English. Maybe if you actually had looked into stuff then wherever you are from would have a better education... So your downside is that you are on a too low level for me to bother to talk more with you. But have a nice day. lol

After Dutch, the three Scandinavian languages are the easiest for native English-speakers to learn. Mormon missionaries learn just about any language in a few weeks. It's all about motivation.

USA is truly the land of opportunity.
Norway is a great country, agreed.
In many of the indices you referred to, Norway is ranked way higher than USA.
However, USA essentially has an open border and lets anyone walk across or swim across the southern border and join the country.
Essentially, USA is constantly importing poverty and illiteracy into the country.
Norway? Norway has closed borders. If Norway has open borders, its ranking would drop like a rock.

Norway has an agreement with the EU that requires us to have open borders to all EU countries, they can all live and work here indefinitely without a visa or citizenship, so you're totally wrong about that. It's way harder to immigrate into the US, especially after the Patriot Act law that says only people with "special" skills can get a work visa. The only real way to get a US work visa for an average person today is to go there illegally on a 3 month tourist visa and get a job with an employer that's willing to sponsor you. There was even a guy at the airport that asked me a bunch of weird questions about if I was planning on getting a job and so on before he would stamp my passport. I've been to a lot of countries and the US was by far the strictest when it comes to immigration, and that was back when Obama was running the place, I can only imagine what it's like now.
