The answer could have been straightforward and to the point "If it's a females-only prayer space, there would a be female Imam. If it's mixed with separate female prayers spaces as most mosques tend to be, then there will be a male Imam but there will be female leaders/teachers for various women's committees. Women are not allowed to lead men in prayers in Islam." That's it. Where the confusion here? That's just the rule of the religion. If the journalist is truly invested in having a fruitful discussion, then a broad discussion around women's role in chaplaincy can follow. The constant question dodging is what gets to me. We should also be prepared to answer such questions when in a media-facing role.

That would also probably cause a controversy. She might have wanted to maintain a peaceful image and gain the favour of the public, since she’s in front of a huge audience who’s majority might not agree with Islam. I think it was best to dodge the question. And whoever is truly interested in its answer, can definitely receive one from a scholar who feels more freedom in expressing his/her opinion, instead of someone who’s being purposefully cornered and pressured live on air.

Imams are not the same as Rabbis and Priests. Imams r simply figures who lead the prayers of the mosque. For example you can see children leading the prayers in Ramadan, quite a common scenario. It doesn’t mean Imam is someone who is authoritative or very knowledgeable, whereas Rabbis and Priests study for a long time to become what they are.

    • @lindahashem9281
      @lindahashem9281 Před 3 lety +40

bolobolo bolo but you literally said “islam encourages men..”? no it’s not a problem that women cant have more than one spouse because these aren’t love marriages, and in fact any man that has more than one spouse due to “love” or lust is sinning. the role of men in islam is to provide for the family, a man might take in another woman to provide for her and her children if she has any. but this is if and only if he has enough money to provide for the entire family, and meets many other qualifications. a woman doesn’t marry more than one spouse because we’re not obligated to provide for men or their children.
polygamy is forbidden when the reason is romantic “love” or lust.
also women can lead other women and children in prayer but if it’s a mix of adult men and women then men lead, i’m not gonna make an excuse for that

Because when we pray we have to kneel and bow down and by doing that we make such poses which may divert the attention of men praying behind women. And you didn't get my point: I did not say if it's okay or not for those behind the Imam..I said 'I' would not want me or my daughter to be in a situation where I have to do such bodily maneuvers standing in front of a multitude of strange men. The interviewer really doesn't understand the term of imam. Imam is a person who LEADING. Of course woman can be imam for other woman. But if men are there, we will lead the prayer. Same goes to a family. The man will lead his family because he hold many responsibilities to his family but that doesn't mean woman doesn't have right or turn down in Islam. Woman have same right with man but slightly in different terms. Prophet Muhammad was asked by his companion who he should pay his respect to. The prophet said 3 times for mother then after that the fourth time is the father. Anyone who disobey his mother will not be accept into the heaven. There are term " heaven is under the mother's feet". This is how high Islam put woman status in Islam.

I'm here after reading an article in the Guardian. The Guardian mentioned the interview was 'strikingly hostile' but maybe I'm missing something here?
The first question was 'How many female Imam's are there in Britain?' and the response was that she didn't have the numbers... Suggesting she knew of some.
The second question was 'but do we have them?' is not the same as the first and could have been answered with a yes or no, or even a 'I don't know'.
I don't see how you can have a problem with a journalist asking a question to establish if we have female Imam's in Britain and if we do, how many there are?
I guess the implication is that the presenter wanted a nice juicy reply of either 'no there aren't any' or 'not many' so she could go into the "feminist" side of the debate but she's Zara Mohammed is the first female leader of the Muslim Council of Britain and it's an interview on Woman's Hour.
Just give a straight answer and then if it starts to go into an area of debate you don't want to discuss then say 'sorry, I'm not prepared or willing to discuss that in this interview' but establishing if there are female Imam's and how many there are in Britain doesn't seem a controversial question to me.

I personally I would have said that's not the point if the interview because we are not here ro discuss or judge my religion or our rituals and I am not interested in to having thatkind of discussion with someone like *you*. She would have shut up for good.
If she asked what do you mean with someone like me?
I would have said someone who doesn't adhere to this religion beliefs and is only trying to create some controversy and make of an issue that does ot exist.
She was too nice with that journalist to be honest. She deserved to shut up.

However, in a room that only occupies woman and no men seen these women can lead prayers to each other. So this is beautiful in Islam. Women doesnt have to compete with men in all areas. We understand our each roles. And these differences does not mean men are superior than woman. In Islam the Quran says that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. Salam brothers and sisters There is no denying sister Zara did what billion of people could not be able to do. ❤️, that journalist failed to be a journalist, everyone can see what that journalist trying to do its as if going to a medical doctor and asking him question about astronomy. Rather than what he has mastery in it, if there was a muslim scholar she would not even dare ask these question fearing he will answer and people will be satisfy with it.
Someone said to me ”she should have known the answer”
My reply: salam brother and sister, these question you would least expect to not know about would still need a scholar, we muslim brother and sister lives in different parts of world and the knowledge in differ part of world are less than other or more than others, some do not have internet and some do, not only that lets say if someone ask you what is the purpose of Life, you would answer that this life is given except to Worship Allah (swt) and you would be right about but you have to explain why is Allah worthy of your worship, a scholar is capable of quoting from quran, hadith, historic evidence, scientific fact, miracles and etc, like scholar might say this life is northing but a test and you will be test with the loss of wealth, loss of health and los of loves one, and slowly connects the dot for them regarding how it leads to THE! Purpose. Even still scholar them self are student of knowledge, even scholar have limited knowledge, Even if the sister had known the answer of it, it is no one place to ask her the question because that was not the purpose of the topic!. And just cuz she is a muslim does not mean she know the answer to everything
I LOVE EVRY SINGLE ONE OF MY MUSLIM BROTHER ANS SISTER AROUND THE WROLD IT IS SO PAINFUL WE ARE SO FAR BUT I MISS YOU ALL I WANT TO BE WITH YOU AND WANT TO BE PROTECTED BY YOU YET WE ARE AT THE END TIME ONLY TWO OR ONE MINOR SIGHN LEFT BEFORE MAJOR SIGHN, I WISH DAY OF JUDGEMENT DO NOT COME IN MY TIME. YA ALLAH PLS HAVE MERCY ON ME 😢
YA ALLAH YOU MADE ME A MUSLIM AND MADE ME GROW AS A MUSLIM WHEN I DIDN’T EVEN ASK YOU TO, YA ALLAH THIS TIME I AM ASKING GRANT ME HIGHEST JANNAH

When Christians and Jews start eating pork although prohibited in their literatures, that does not mean Muslim should take a lead from that. Similarly, when Christians and Jews start having women leading their prayers, we Muslims don't have to follow that. Bear in mind that Islamic prayers and requirements are not merely traditions. They are Allah's instruction that we must follow. That is why Quran remains unaltered after so many years.

Don't say like this is a huge responsibility ,that's why you are happy that you don't have to do it . Women are also given other huge responsibilities that's in the term are equally important . Rather talk about the fact that it can't be done bcz , women have Menstruation for 7-10 days & so prayer would be stopped during that time. A lot more reasons are there. Men & women are equal & complementary in the eyes of Allah, not equal & competitive . Lastly, we are given limited brain power. Above all Allah knows best.
