Holy fucking flying spaghetti monster batman!! Someone who can actually put a product through some repeatable tests outside of its design purpose (which is a reasonable test given the time of 10 minutes and I infer from the video he is probably using the same criteria on other knifes), in front of the camera and he provides some practical observation about how it performs before, during and after the tests! You sir are a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
I like when reviewer's heavily abuse there gear and I like watching multiple reviewer's ,review on the same gear. sometimes I have noticed a few people take ofense to such abuse. I think it's good to see what other people think about the same products and to see how it holds up to heavy abuse , of course with no cost to myself or damage to my gear . so thanks for the wicked awsome video I loved it
Beware, the virole (the lock system) is supposed to have a limited strenght resistance. Never consider the opinel to be other than a folding knife. Have fun with it with care.
a nice light duty machete that you can fold up and put in your pocket, not meant to be the primary camping tool but it shows it can survive harsh use if necessary
Aaaah to live in a country where soft wood "grows on trees" :) I love how Opinel just scale up for their larger knives. I'm surprised the Virobloc handles it all so well. Pity Opinel don't make a similar model in a fixed blade.
good review, great knife, if you like large folders that are good for the outdoors i recomend you check out the cold steel rajah II. i dont think its quite as big as the opinel 13 but the blade is thicker and it too has a very strong lock. id love to see you do a side by side outdoor test of the two.
Nice review ghost. Thanks for the time to show the capabilities of this knife. Im in southern bavaria woul dyou know where I might get opinel's around here? Something a lot smaller LOL
Actually, Yes it is. The Opinel brand has been around for generations and carries the reputation of multiple uses - just as he used here. Your point, however, is understood: Use the Right Tool for the Right Job. But for a secondary tool in one's Bugout Bag - this is Excellent.
Nice to see opinels taking a beating, even if it is the oversized 13 intended as sort of a gag, I'm sure it's made of the same steel :) and i really love these little knives. A #9 is in my pocket every day
Thank you good Sir for the review. I was wondering about the Opinel 13 and now I understand what it looks like and what it can do. To my eye it seems a cross between a machette (bush knife) and a bayonette. I'm going to check if they are imported into Australia because that looks like a handy tool to leave in my camper trailer for general purpose duties like firewood etc.
The Opinel 13 is really a prank knife, and not to be taken seriously. It's a lot of fun though. Do NOT, however, slide that one into your pocket in polite society. Well, unless you want a lot of women following you out of the place.
Sorry, but it has became my #1 steak knife and you can take it with you in camping, it's razor sharp. Actually, it's not a prank knife, it was first created for promotional purposes, so Opinel sellers of the 70's had a big prop over the opinel rack, but soon, Opinel users wanted the big one too... In fact, it was discontinued for long, it's a re-issue, nd it's a great chief-knife! Moreover, it's so ridculously huge that anyone shown this has a laugh.
At 5:44 Noticable damage to the handle at the locking mechanism...likely due to the lock failing during Batonning at 3:41. This knife is not made for the rigors of Batoning. It shows obvious wear on the wooden handle from improper use
Very nice review ! I love my Opinels and it is a shame that the no.13 is not legal in Holland. Anyway, one small tip. Rotate the Virobloc the other way !! I've seen lock failure with heavy duty use by turning the lock that way. Bye turning it the other way there is more metal of the lock to support it.
good video, I have 3 opinals which I use on a shooting estate in hampshire, must get this beast to add a bit of weight to my collection. Only the price is a lot more than most of these french blades, pity they dont do a carbon steel.
I love my opinel, I have I believe the number 8 or 9,I have used it from everything from cleaning fish, cutting rope, wood carving an this fall I'm gonna put it to the test an use it for skinning moose,if its still sharp after that, the edge will have proved itself
boy I love opinels, for how many things quality made, we can say we can buy them without spending a small fortune? opinel and mora are among few to my opinion. Nice video
There is a Super Giant Opinel in front of the factory but you'd need a truck to move it :) N°13 was first created for promotional purposes, so Opinel sellers of the 70's had a big prop over the opinel rack, but soon, Opinel users wanted the big one too. In fact, it was discontinued for long, it's a re-issue and with the internet, users fell on pics of the N°13 and there were enough asking the company to consider resuming! There is a n°15f with 15cm blade, the blade is very thin on purpose, it's made to cut little vegetable/fruit/cheese cubes or thin strips. Usually, the number goes with the blade's length, except for N°13
@stealthbeast Before I started with the batoning,I forgot to tighten the virobloc, therefore it was a bit loose, when I batoned the first woodpiece. You can see in the video a bit later, that I noticed that and fixed it by turning the virobloc-lock.Was my human mistake - not the fault of the knife -sorry! ;-)
Hi, I'm going to get this blade, but did anyone noticed that at 3:42 the lock seems to get loose? is it real or just my illusion? is the locking mechanism damaged due to batoning?
I would be much more inclined to use this as a folding machete rather than a batoning blade due to what I have seen here. I could see it doing the job with slightly more robust construction materials though. Also, you're in the woods....why baton what appear to be processed planks?
Crocodile Dundee: "Now that's a knife!"
*Knoife
Thank you. That was an excellent demonstration of capability.
Moin Chris......immer eine Freude deine Videos. 🙂
Wünsche dir ein frohes fest mein Lieber. 🙂
Allerbeste Grüße & stay sharp,
Stephan :-)
Opinel has always been a classic favourite of mine.
Thanks for the great review!
HAHAHA!! That knife is comically huge!! I love it!!
awesome! i ordered the opinel no 8 carbone 2 days ago, can't wait to have it.
cool video!!
Thanks for the demo. I want 2 of them!
Holy fucking flying spaghetti monster batman!!

Thank you.
wow! That is a huge Opinel and useful too!

Nice review, thanks. Now thinking about getting one.
great Video my friend...Awesome demostration of the knife.
Thanks for your video, it inspired me to get my own and I linked your video in my review of the knife, Prost...
Great video and really nice knife!
just purchased one based on this review--thanx!!
Beware, the virole (the lock system) is supposed to have a limited strenght resistance.

That knife is just hilarious :D
wow..great video!!!
great vid!!!
most excellent!! thanks!
I love it. Maybe I'll put one on my keychain!!!
Wow, now I want one.
I love opinel knives.
what a beast
a nice light duty machete that you can fold up and put in your pocket, not meant to be the primary camping tool but it shows it can survive harsh use if necessary
nice review dude. thanks.
Really nice knife! Like high quality folding machette!
It's not made for hitting cuts like machetes, but it's really great as chief knife and to cut steaks from a big quarter of meat

lol can believe opinel make something this big that is friken awesome

Muy buena prueba.
Esta muy buena la opinel👍
Damn, now I want one of those too. CZcams makes my money dissapear sometimes. Great vid again, thanks.

6:02 Don't you see the wood damage bellow the Vibrolock?
WHAT!? THAT IS THE BIGGEST FOLDER ON THE PLANET!
¡Wow!
I have never seen an Opinel No.13 before. I see a Google seatch in my near future. Great Video.
I like it!
Thank you, Sue!
Well in any case I think it's safe to say that he just completely blew the myth about #13 just being a show piece right out of the water lol

nice video
I been to that forest and honesty it's a great view from the cafe
toller kanal
Man you look like a double of Dominic Purcell in the movie Killer Elite. ^^
Thanks for another GREAT video! Pretty awesome knife, and a good substitute for a thin golok. Does Opinel make one with a slightly thicker blade???
A part of me wants to believe that the No. 13 is just your average sized Opinel and a REALLY tiny guy is using it.
That folder is a beast! In a fight it may just chop off someones hand or worse, lol
God's pocket knife.
I don't know if I need one, but I want one.
do the same tests in micro scale with opinel 02 and mathes
At 5:44 Noticable damage to the handle at the locking mechanism...likely due to the lock failing during Batonning at 3:41. This knife is not made for the rigors of Batoning. It shows obvious wear on the wooden handle from improper use

If someone makes a No.14 that's twice this size, I imagine it would be a pretty nifty two handed folding sword.
wow thats a big folder,i have a nr9
you put it to the test my friend
atb
steve
yes, but will it trim a handlebar moustache?
+mattcav001 Haaahaaaa!!!!
and the # 12--love these blades..
Serial killers Francis Heaulme and Guy Georges were avid users of Opinel n°12. I wan the n°13 for Jason XIII !!!
good video, I have 3 opinals which I use on a shooting estate in hampshire, must get this beast to add a bit of weight to my collection. Only the price is a lot more than most of these french blades, pity they dont do a carbon steel.
lol @ the folks freaking out like he borrowed the knife from them...
hehe. and they call it a show-knife.
very nice test on my favorite knife maker.
I love my opinel, I have I believe the number 8 or 9,I have used it from everything from cleaning fish, cutting rope, wood carving an this fall I'm gonna put it to the test an use it for skinning moose,if its still sharp after that, the edge will have proved itself

opinel and mora are among few to my opinion.
Nice video
Its a revolutionised folding machete
This knife is hilarious
@NJMevec2 Thanks. And much fun with this "little" folder ;)
12 Jason movies were shot! Opinel n°13 for Jason XIII !!!!
@AmericanBushman1 Yes-it`s a kind of a beast,this Opinel;-) I am allready curious,when they will create a No.14 lol!
There is a Super Giant Opinel in front of the factory but you'd need a truck to move it :) N°13 was first created for promotional purposes, so Opinel sellers of the 70's had a big prop over the opinel rack, but soon, Opinel users wanted the big one too. Like crocodile dundee said "now that's a knife"
@Monger4142 Thanks,friend!
french weapon of mass destruction #1
DId you sharpen it first or is this factory edge? My No12 was very dull from the factory and I put a very sharp edge on it using a water stone.
I really want one of these but it's hard tracking one down available here in the US
this little damage in the beech wood of the handle didn`t touch the full functioniality of this knife. It worked still fine! ;)
I love that he still calls it a knife. More of a machete really.
All of that chopping made me cringe. That's no way to treat a folder, but you made your point! It's an awesome knife.
Das ist für dich so wie für mich das 12er ;D
@ThePanTian
Yes its greatartig! ;)
Nice video! I'm considering one know : )
Nice Work. Where did you get this nice knive? Kannst mir auch auf deutsch antworten ;)
hey wait... 3:40 It looks like the first few wacks caused the lock to bend. What's up with that?
At 3:41 while batonning the knife blade gave way. Was it locked at that point?
It's Mark Chopper Reid
very nice bad guy :)
how much for this?
that bill Gates Machete
It is more for leek, meat and onions. Secondary knife whilst camping...
Hi, I'm going to get this blade, but did anyone noticed that at 3:42 the lock seems to get loose? is it real or just my illusion? is the locking mechanism damaged due to batoning?
at 7:14 i was thinking that he will start cutting on of those trees ;)
I would be much more inclined to use this as a folding machete rather than a batoning blade due to what I have seen here. I could see it doing the job with slightly more robust construction materials though. Also, you're in the woods....why baton what appear to be processed planks?
@knifeguyfromdenmark2 You`re damn right! ;-) One hit right...one hit left...and your opponent could loose his head!...or worse,lol ! ;-))
