Christie’s New York presents Martin Wong’s ‘Portrait of Mikey Piñero at Ridge Street and Station’ to be sold during this season’s 21st Century Evening Sale.
This impressive urban portrait captures the energy, dynamism, and emotional resonance of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1980s. Miguel ‘Mikey’ Piñero was a poet, friend, lover and great influence on Wong. The composition includes many of Wong’s most celebrated motifs - eight-ball, screwdriver and beer can - while the border is inscribed with Piñero’s most famous work, ‘A Lower East Side Poem’.
