  • Old Imperial Kamado restoration project.
A slightly long film showing all parts of the restoration.
The Kamado was in good condition when I got it. But all metal parts were rusted under the paint. In addition, it had a crack in the ceramik.

She’s a beauty. I have one my grandmother left my sister and now it’s mine. Half that size and yellowish orange. Needs a restore to the metal frame.

I have the same model of Imperial Kamado as you, and mine has cracks on the top lid. Also I had to replace the bottom plate with a grid from the sour. One of the inside rings broke, so I had to replace it with three fire proof bricks. It still works after 28 years, but I need to fix the bottom vent.
Where did you find the spares for this one? I have tried but always get the reply that the cheramic is so fragile it can't be sent to Sweden.
After all, this is the best BBQ I have ever used and now I will try to repair it thanks to your great video.

What is the black liquid that was applied following the application of high temperature cement and fiber glass combination?

the restoration is great. Like the person above, can you tell me exactly what the products were used to patch. Your videos are intriguing and the slow closing apparatus is ingenious! thanks for sharing. I have an Imperial that was purchased 25 yrs ago and have not used it for over 10 yrs and your video has given me an incentive to restore it.

What was the black layer you wiped on to the repair area after the sealant and fiberglass were dried and sanded?

I'd love to have any information you might have about the Imperial Japanese hibachi. I'm currently restoring an old No-5 hibachi. I didn't see any contact information in your profile.

    Hello,
My dad brought one of these back from Japan in the '60s. Its in great shape except for the exterior color. Its now a rust color instead of green and black. Should I try to restore it and any tips?

What size Kamoda is this ? I brought my dads 1978 size # 2 and have some minor repairs to do- how did you replace the wire band around the ring?

Can you send those instructions how to repair/restore the cracked Kamados. My cracked ten years, I replaced it with the Pakistani one Augie shipped me, which works great but is a little bigger (circumference). I kept the old one in case I could find how to restore. Now I can!

I just found this exact kamado at a garage sale for $100. The old guy I bought it from said he bought it in 1970 when he was in Japan. He kept it in storage for almost 50 years. Very good condition. Anyone know the value of it? I probably wont sell but I'm curious if I got a good deal on it. Thanks.

Can you tell me what it is that was used to repair this crack. Seemed like fiberglass but what is the liquid product? Will it hold up to the heat and be non toxic to the food?
    Nice video

    Hey mate,
cool video. I am about to restore one of these Kamados.
How is the vitcas and fibre matt holding up to the temps?
what black paint did you use?
Have you tried using their furnace cement?
    cheers

Those old Imperial Japanese kamados are made of clay. They are not capable of withstanding high temperatures like the modern ceramic versions like Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe.

That inside patch job was something only somebody on meth would do. Whatever all that glue crap was that you put on the inside of the bbq, it's going to burn off and coat your food☠️🤢🤮. You should have used pizza oven or fireplace mortar🤡
