- Today on Modern Builds, I'm building an adjustable, floating wall shelf with built in media storage and a desk! everything is built from a single 2"x6" and a sheet of 3/4" pine plywood. If you're not interested in using metal for the brackets, 1/2" plywood would work fine, it would just look a bit more bulky. Hi Mike. I've remodeled my house and did a lot of the work with my brother. I'm now really enjoying new projects, how do you come up with these ideas? I feel like I have to see someone do it, then get inspired with ideas. I feel like I could never just wake up and build that shelf from my own imagination. IKEA makes a similar shelf, on the IKEA site search 291.844.52 it's bamboo though, I'd prefer to make it myself though, custom hardware and supports are always fun to make, great video as usual.

Hey, new to the channel and wanted to leave some feedback (hopefully thats okay!) The project was actually kinda neat and your personality & enthusiasm really set you apart, HOWEVER, this video is SO bright and OVEREXPOSED that I legitimately had a hard time discerning what was happening. The plywood and 2x4s literally looked white. I checked on my Xbox, laptop, and phone just to make sure that it wasn't a setting on MY end.
It really did remind me of a movie scene where they visit heaven and its just a blinding white as far as the eye can see. It hurt to look at. Sincerely.

I love this, the attention to detail is great. I have a question: when making the dado, what blade would you use in place of a circular saw to avoid having to go back into the plywood with a jigsaw? I can't wait to give this a go, I've been needing a new desk. I think I'd make the deepest shelf a murphy to really maximize space.
A router with a dado bit would be able to cut it all in one pass. just come back with a small chisel to square off the ends of the groove
quick fix for the desk swing out or slide out keyboard tray to extend the desk top it wont mess with the aesthetic too much
If you wanted to make a door for the record cabinet, would you have any hints or suggestions (other than just plywood, edge banding and hinges)?
really dig the floating looking. vinyl shelf is p cool too. maybe could of did something more interesting with the wood by staining it

Hmm, if I don't trust my wall/studs, I imagine you could add a backpiece with plywood and support 2x4 along the bottom and in a triangle on the sides |_\ though maybe weight it on the bottom.

What mods would you recommend to make this freestanding instead of wall mounted? Swap 2x2s for the rear supports and add front legs for the box and desktop?

Love the vids bro huge fan! But please do us all a favor and make and use a push stick. You're scaring us. I work in a cabinet shop, you gotta respect that table saw or it'll get you. We all use them in the shop, it's worth the extra two seconds to grab it. No disrespect Mike.

Me personally, I would trust drywall anchors for something that will take a lot of weight.
I would have checked where the studs were before I started.
Or I would have put plywood into the studs, so this way you won't just have a blank boring wall behind it, you can paint it. Then screw the supports into there.

I did this but I bought metal tracks with brackets that support the shelves and it was a million times easier and took less time
