Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
I hated history at school. I think things would have been very different if I had this man as a teacher.
Brucie is very interesting and convincing for sure.
Same.
Totally👍
True that
He was a science teacher, actually, not a history teacher.
and this explains why to this day there is a "Wild Scotsman Motel" in Gin Gin
Indeed
He could’ve gone into politics & robbed people legally😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Most excellent video Bruce! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!🏴❤️
Thank you
You need your own show on TV, this video is so nicely done
how do you work out its true? people believe anything and thats the truth.
I'm not sure if I should believe that 😁

Brisbane isn't a bad city. Its great to see you cover the connection between Scotland and Australia. (Thank you for this).
You're welcome
As a MacPherson descendant...he used to borrow rich squatters best horses...& Ented one in the Roma annual horse race... until he was recognised LoL ...& The note he left by his chains was to the queen of England... thanks Bruce great post.. love your work 👍. He was quite fluent in Latin..! & German..
I know,, but the video was already running too long to include these details
I so enjoy laughing while watching. You are a true compliment to Scotland.
Wow, thank you!
Hope you had a warm welcome in Queensland. 👍👍
We did indeed
@12:37 "He could have gone into politics, and robbed people legally" lol...I was laughing when I heard you say this lol.
😜
'Loveable rogue' is a phrase perhaps coined for this laddie
James knew the chief justice. He saved his life twice earlier in his career as a politician. His name was Charles Lilley. Brisbane is a small place. The Petries are a big family also. John Mcherson is my great great grandfather. James father. John was born on my grand daughters his great great great granddaughters birthday. James George McPherson the third is my uncle. We have a photo of him on his horse. He served in Vietnam and a Sergeant in WW1. They have a festival every yr to remember James in Gin Gin annually. My uncle Tommy McPherson was also a cattle man and lived & travelled up the gulf. Was a proper cowboy for many many yrs. I myself have raised my sons in Mt Isa on the lake next to cattle stations not far from Burketown where my great uncle Rest in Peace. Travelling north towards Burketown are some of my favourite memories.
Whether you're looking for a good guy or a bad guy, the best ones always seem to be Scots.
Thanks for another great video, Bruce. And when you get back to the homeland, be sure and tell everybody what the Sun looks like. Enjoy it while you're down there.
😎😎😎
As a Dundonian I approve that joke
😜
What was the joke, I didn't find it in the video?
@@Campbell5339 correct. It wasn't a joke. It was factual

As an Aussie, this has to be a favourite video . Thankyou!
All the respect I can muster Bruce! Slainte a'charaid 🍻

I’m a Brisbanite with Scottish heritage who’s just got back from a little road trip around the UK (mainly Scotland though). I did so with a friend who introduced me to your videos while we were driving! (Though obviously I was experiencing them more as a podcast)
This is the first one I’m properly watching! Your content is so awesome! I really hope you keep it up!
Ah brilliant
I love your story telling... humourous and informative... very well done and so enjoyable, but so relatable... thank you... I am so glad I found your channel...
Ah thanks
Well done Bruce! Isn't it strange how someone who commits robbery can be so likable that people don't want them to go to jail? Except for politicians, we all want them to go to jail LoL!
🤣
Another great video Bruce, thanks 👍🏻 I do so look forward to seeing your videos, it makes me happy whenever I see a notification for a new 1, it does seem like a while since you last put 1 out, I have to guess it's do to your busy tour schedule right now, I am happy for your success, you deserve it! Keep up the great work. 🏴🇺🇸🏴
Sorry Bruce, I just saw that you put out a video 2 weeks ago that I obviously must have missed 😢 So I'm gonna go watch it 😊 lol...
I put out a video every Saturday morning at 10am London time. Click the notification bell and choose 'all'
The fella's bin entertaining us in Cairns in between making new videos...he is a busy lad.

Western Australia has a strong Scottish heritage. It’s capital city, Perth. Suburbs of Perth like Kinross and Craigie. Local Government Area of Stirling.
Aye, I made a video there last month
@@ScotlandHistoryTours You’re the best.
This is so funny!! And I love the beautiful photos, thanks for a little peek at the australian wildlife. I hope your tour is going well, I am sure you are going down a storm. By the end of it, and all those dates in Scotland, you will need some vitamins and a holiday . . . I hear the Antipodes are rather attractive at that time of year.
Fascinating 👍
Another great story, thanks 👍🎅🏻
That link to Robbery Under Arms is genius well played once more Bruce
I could have come down to Brisbane to far hello.. only an hour by train😮
Nice time of year now.. maybe i should head out on my motorbike to while away the days
A cup of good coffee and your videos have become my early Saturday Morning routine. A great way to start the day.
As always another great video. Thanks.
Brilliant
You always have a great story! Thank you again.
Thanks for listening
I grew up in the central NSW where Ben Hall & his buddies plied their bushranger tacrics. Ben Hall is buried at Forbes Cemetry & so is Kate Kelly, sister of Ned Kelly (another bushranger of Irish descent).
When I was a boy I used to play in a cave on Cooya Station that MacPherson used as a hideaway.
Nice wee story. True, the best kind.
Great story Bruce. No doubt James has lots of descendants who admire him. Have you done videos on other interesting Scots who came out here, assisted or otherwise.
He's done some others, just not whilst being in Aus himself.
Another excellent video Bruce!
Thanks again!
I am so happy you got out here and did these videos and shows, so sorry I wasn't able to catch the Brisbane shows and meet you... cheers..

Hey Bruce, what is it that you say at the end of each video?
It makes me want to learn Gaelic
"Tha mi an dòchas gum bi latha math agaibh," translates to "I hope you have a good day."
My Grandad founf one of his spurs with MacPherson engraved on it and an old vinegar bottle full of salt. Some rotten sides of leather. My brother and I found another vinegar bottle full of salt and more rotten leather. But not other spur.
Was this on the island?
That was brilliant thank you so much for it
You're very welcome
You know they basically only teach about Ned Kelley not so much about this gentleman
He went from Sydney to Queensland via Mackay on its way to Rockhampton? Did it go via Perth? This bloke got around, they buried him in Burketown in the gulf.
I'm from Bris Vegas. I'd never heard of this feller until now. Thanks for enlightening me to some of my own local history 👍😎👍
Our pleasure!
were you not locally aware of this before? like no local legends? I find it very interesting but I like to have more than one reference.
@@pjmoseley243 The local legends I'm most interested in are the indigenous folk of these parts. Their stories are only just starting to see the light of day. As an Italian/Scottish/Irish descended person "my" history is very well documented. But I'd never heard of this MacPherson feller before.
Anyways, if you are actually interested in the local history of "Bris Vegas" as we call it here - google "Dundalli" to understand some of wtf happened here during colonisation. Let's just say that despite arguments to the contrary, there was war.
P.S. Dundalli was hanged on 5th January 1855 at the site of the current Brisbane General Post Office on Queen Street for his resistance to colonisation.
@@maqimusicI agree. I grew up in Pullenvale and an aboriginal man Dr Tooth taught us a lot. We would have excursions around Pullenvale & learn about the bora bora and fighting battle grounds at the pony club. I walked & ride horses my whole life around the area the aboriginals inhabited for hundreds well thousands of yrs.
I'm a new subscriber. I enjoy history. Scottish history is quite interesting. You make it enjoyable. Thank you. It's amazing how influential the Scots were/are worldwide. Since ancestry studies have become so popular, I jumped on the bandwagon. 26% from your part of town and 22% from the Netherlands. Those were the two highest percentages. As most Americans, I'm a mutt. A mixture of many cultures. And that's okay. At least now I know where I acquired my affection for whisky. Thanks for telling stories.
Brilliant
Ben Hall had a cave in the Weddin Mountain, just outside the small(
Another good video. I only a Hour from Brisbane here and depending on the contracts I can get into some areas but unfortunately you what to go I could not help. I reckon you should do something on Glen Innes (NSW) Celtic festival.

Great story again Bruce.
I'd never heard of James MacPherson before, but I did know of Ben Hall via the movie "The Legend of Ben Hall" - which is a pretty good watch.
More research for me
@@ScotlandHistoryTours there was a bush ranger that, fortunately after they hanged him, had his scrotum made into a tobacco pouch. It may have been Ben Hall.
i hope you enjoyed your time in brisbane!
I did! indeed
Being a descendant of James McPherson i really appreciate this video. I prolly am bias but i think his story is under valued.
I too am. My grand father’s name is James George McPherson as is my uncles and my cousin. I believe John maybe is my great grand father and he named his son after his brother. John was a twin and my grandmother Elizabeth had twins but died.
I also grew up in Pullenvale not far from where James was doing his apprentice. I knew the descendants of that family also growing up.
Cheers
no no no, put me on to that place i'll vouch for you and get you in there. i want to see you history-ing about places i know/live.
Catching up to your two most recent videos in reverse order. What a great story! Thank you for bringing it in your excellent style. It appears that McPherson turned to robbery due to his erstwhile employer’s exploitation of workers. In a later time he might have been a labor organizer or a civil rights leader. From the testimonials by those signing his clemency petition, it’s clear that he must, on balance, have been a good person. Is there any effort being made to locate and mark his grave?
Now there’s a point
Very good point however grave is unmarked. Would be great to explore more
No he and two sheep shearer’s weren’t paid their wages. Then it was a life of crime after then..
The 2 camera angles when ur on the bench was well played ahah
😜
Come to the Irish pub in Nijmegen
A Highway robber? I have trouble imagining someone robbing a highway!
"All right Highway 61 give up your stripes! "
It's hard to picture! Lol
Some Australians love the heat, but I am not among them. Of course, if I were in Scotland I’d probably be complaining about the cold. Wish I’d caught your show.

First to comment , good morning to all !
Wrong 😂 Get it right up ye
lots of places horses can't get too and you only get around on foot, mountains mostly.
A'reyt Bruce. Interesting tale of modern day Robin Hood. Hang on the sheriff was from Nottingham. The fact that what used to be called Robin Hood Airport is near Doncaster should tell you where he is from. What, you say? Doncaster is Scotland?
My brother lived inGin Gin for years, and we never knew anything about this!

HIS BOAT IS NAMED 'THERAPY'! 🤣
So, the the lesson I took from this story is that if you're an expecting mother with a last name of MacPherson...
You might not want to name your son after your old Uncle Jimmy.
