    On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

      The AZ would be different enough from the other F1 variants in DCS, which would make it worth modeling. Plus, there’s easily accessible information online and several examples on display in museums. The F1AZ would be perfect!

    My analysis of the fight (for what its worth...)
    This turned into a 100% pilot skill contest.
    The F1 is the superior platform here, but lack of familiarity with its flight characteristics hamstrung it in both encounters.
    It was pretty apparent that both pilots were far more comfortable in the MiG 21, which makes sense - because its been on the platform for ages.

  • @hmmjedi
    @hmmjedi Před rokem +34

    Another challenge for the Mig-21's was that the V-3 Kukri worked with a helmet mounted sight. The A model Kukri had poor performance but the B model Kukri was about equal to the J model Aim-9. Which for the time mid 1970's to mid 1980's was pretty good given South Africa's situation. And thanks for another excellent video.

      Off-bore, they had a potential mind-numbing 90 degrees, though 45-70 was more typical in all exes - all with the Armscor lightweight LDR array on the helmets, a full decade before all other systems in Russian and Western fighters. The CZ and AZ were the most deadly fighters in Southern Africa for 20 years for that reason alone.

    • @martinstrumpfer1620
      @martinstrumpfer1620 Před rokem +5

      The HMS was an option, but rarely used due to its weight. It wasn't comfortable at all during hard manuvering. The V3B also had its manuvering limits although Armscor brochures don't specify the rear aspect only limits of the missile. It was a good missile, but was no world beater. Matter of fact only the Strike F1AZ's carried the V3B. The interceptor F1CZ's carried the M550 when deployed on operations.

    The SAAF painscheme of the era was beautiful, they just need some mild corrections on the details: the national insignia should have the sprinbok inset, not the eagle (the eagle is the current insignia). Also, some placement issues (ejection seat warning should be under the canopy, and insignia further forward on the sides, just behind the air intakes).

    The tech and science behind these aircraft is so refined, yet the crafts' purpose is solely designed for destruction.
    what a world. Just another "what if" moment. have a nice day everyone.

    Seems like a really poor design choice on the mirage to have that alpha warning at a point where it’s expected to go off in routine maneuvering. Alarm fatigue means the pilot will learn to ignore the warning which could have disastrous consequences.
    A two-stage alarm where there’s a warning first, which is just advisory, as opposed to an actual alarm when something bad is happening; seems wiser.
    Harassing the pilot with alarms gets in the way of their situational awareness as well.

    while R-60s might have the flare resistance of a magnifying glass, and a range worse than the earliest model AIM-9s, they can still pull a really respectable amount of G's. not 100% sure but I believe among the order of 20-30G, even

    • @paristo
      @paristo Před rokem +1

      The important factor is that where R-3S is limited to 1.6-2 g at launching platform, the R-60 (non-M) allows 7g, and maximum overload for the missile is 47 g, meaning it can track a target pulling 12 g (3.9:1 ratio, generally it is taken as 3-5:1 ratio. Example AIM-120C-5 can only pull 30g (some speak about 20 g) limiting target interception capability to 7.5-8 g).
      The R-60 lacks in the range (at sea level 0.25-1.5 km, at altitude 0.3-8 km), but unlike AIM-9 or R-3 and other missiles at the time, you had seeker uncaged and have excellent capability to turn, until R-73 came out, it was most agile missile.
      But most importantly is its fuzing, as the warhead was capable to destroy target at 300 meters from the launch, where example AIM-9 required 2.5 km (about 5 seconds acceleration) to fuze the warhead after launch. That is why you couldn't go use AIM-9 at close ranges as only choice was to use gun. Again, DCS doesn't simulate this old AIM-9 missiles limitation, giving huge advantage to its operators.

    very good video and very good use of both planes, as for the mig-21 use the same tactics of both, use lowered flaps and additional burning to get the most out of the plane in turns and close to the ground 🤨🤨

    I'd agree. The Magic 2's were great during that time period. R60M's are out matched in every way vs the Magic 2's. However, the 21Bis probaly get's more R60's it could carry iup to 6 and im not sure how many Magic 2's the Mirage F1 carried.
