This war has been embarrassing for Putin since the time the Russian military failed to capture Kyiv in the beginning of the war and were kicked out by Ukrainians in Northern Ukraine. They haven't come near Kyiv since and have been stuck in Eastern Ukraine
Because their lines were too stetched thin, and risked the entire nothern army from being destroyed due to how spreadout and not consolidated the lines were. Compare that to Donbas and southern Kherson where they managed to form a solid front line. It does have strategic reserves, but they'd rather send conscripts. The problem arises if the number of conscripts / cannon fodder is going down too rapidly, as they don't have enought time to recruit / train new cannon fodder. That's why Ukraine needs to push whenever they have the momentum, but Ukraine still has shortage of weaponry (not men), and every time Ukraine is backing off, new conscripts are recruited and trained.

Ukraine is actually just taking some old Russian military equipment out of service and to the scrap yard, and taking down some buildings and other structures that weren't up to code.
