A small pro tips for removing teal in hair or shadows is to desaturate all the low light in luma vs sat.
Long Life to your channel
Hey there! I did that actually in one of the steps. Perhaps you missed it. Since all of her hair doesn't technically lie in the darkest shadows, desaturating the luma value range that her hair is in would cause a lot of other things in the shot to become desaturated.
You can see it at 30:15 . Thanks for helping out!
Do you have issues with the picker tool not working you in the latest update? I have the Plugin selected in the inspector too.
one quick question! when shooting at night time, would you say that its better to not shoot in log profiles based on your experience? Thanks!
As long as you can keep the majority of your shot in the center on the waveform or a little more more than center, you'll be okay. Just don't underexpose the shot if you can help it.
Another great video sir, thanks for taking the time to make these videos and share them with us. I am curious on your thoughts of this ColorFinale when using consumer grade cameras such as the go pro and budget friendly drones for color correction. I have a background in photography, I am very clear on shooting in Raw etc. However for basic youtube videos and the ease of use the smaller cameras go pro and small drones work best for the motorcycle adventure trips I am normally doing. I would still like to get better overall quality video for youtube videos and don't see the cost of the more expensive drones as well as size of them being able to work with my budget nor do I see a chance of stock videos being an option for me as well. I have been uploading to stock agencies for years with the raw files from cameras and I have never seen a pay out worth the effort in my mind for a small one man operation. I know lots of folks would disagree, but if you were working with smaller consumer grade video cameras, would you still consider this ColorFInale as large of an asset for video production knowing you will not be shooting in log settings.? I know you are very busy and thanks in advance if you can answer this question for me. Thank you and have a blessed weekend.

HI Dylan, Great Tutorial. Curious what you do for masks to take down walls around the subject. When I export to MP4 I get the sea shore compression where I put the mask. I've now tried this in FCP and FCP with color Finale. Yet a ProRes version looks fine. Is the answer DaVinci?
Hey! Thanks so much! I don't quite understand though. What do you mean by 'take down walls'? And what is 'sea shore compression'?
@@dylanjohndickerson Hey, sorry. "Take Down walls" = Darken the walls in a scene around the subject / actor. "Sea Shore" = on those walls I can see lines from where I added a mask to darken the walls. They are very defined lines from the mask.

Youâre welcome Yigal!
Very good, I will have to watch this about another three times at least!
So many questions...
I have noticed that the Assume Log doesn't really do a good job if you shoot log ETTR (expose to the right). The exposure slider doesn't help. I ended up making the same flow with a LUT in the layers to go from LOG to 709.
When I'm working with slog2 footage in chromatic, I can choose to put the log to REC709 LUT at any stage in the stack. Am I right in thinking that the colour finale stack goes in reverse order from the bottom to the top, so that adding a new process stacks on top of the previous one?
Also, when comparing with the CoreMelt Chromatic Group process, is there no way to include exposure, contrast, white balance, temp, tint, saturation, sharpness etc into a Color Finale group? Without those elements the other clips donât look the same, which kind of defeats the object of the group technique. I am having to copy and paste onto other clips, which is fine until I want to tweak the temperature control and have it change on all the other clips⊠Is there a way round this? Am I missing something?
Where do these fit into the flow of processing? Is the exposure, contrast etc before the layers? Where does the sharpening happen in the chain?
When I tried using Assume Log on the input it did not do a good job because I tend to expose to the right by 1.7 If I tried to adjust the exposure down to compensate it just acted like lowering the gain, so the image went duller as the top end was lowered. This tells me that the exposure is actually after the input log LUT, which is not very useful. I ended up ignoring the colour management tab, leaving it on assume video, and starting a layer group with the LUT that I needed. Can I confirm that this would still mean that the LOG curves were hitting the LUT rather than a flat looking REC709 hitting the LUT?
There is a tab called Presets, maybe that is something I should look into?
Also, I have a large collection of LUTs, most of which I donât use, but when I go to add a LUT I have to scroll through all of them in a big gallery to find the ones that I do need. Is there a better way to organise these with folders? They are organised on my hard drive but in Color Finale they all display at once.
đ± So educational... âș Color Finally should pay you for making such in depth training for their plug-in. Cause honestly, they don't offer anything valuable let alone something on the scale this training video is.
Only thing I wished is that I had the plug-in so I can practise the things you teach. Hopefully, soon I will safe and I can buy it, unless you get a discount code soon đđ Anyway, I will bookmark this video to watch it back once I get the plug-in.
Btw, is it possible to make a video explaining the difference between Color Finally 2 and Color Finally 2 Pro ?
Thanks so much dude! I actually reached out to them and got a 20% off code! It's only good for one month though. It's DYLANJ20

@@dylanjohndickerson This is really cool .. thanks for sharing it .. I will definitely consider buying once the paycheck has been cashed lol
I think the Pro version adds LUT creation, and I think the grouping feature. Although the grouping doesn't include all the elements as far as I can see.
Is there a way to add keyframes?
Dylan, Also wondering if the developers over at Color Finale ever resolved the issues you found regarding the "Save Presets?" ..... You mentioned that you sent a question to the developers and that you would let us know what their answer was. I have a large amount of clips to correct and color grade in my project and just want to know if this was something I should dive into based on your tutorial - or wait, while this was being addressed in a future firmware update. I'm Sure I'd probably notice something, but just wanted to check and save time before committing to a process only later to find the same conclusion ... Anyway, thank you for all that you do for this community and for those who have faith in the work that you do ..... All the best!!

Thanks fr the video, but LUT's have to be added and are not automatically added if on your computer. I wish you would have gone through that process a little bit more. I actually bought the plug in just for that gallery view option... Thanks
Oh really? They seemed to upload automatically for me. Well, the good news is all you have to do is click the LUT folder for import. The plug in can do so much more than just the gallery view option. I'd give the rest of it a whirl when you get the chance đ
@@dylanjohndickerson Thank man, Where are you storing your LUT's if I may ask... Maybe I could that... Thanks!
@@ekphotography I just put them in a folder I created in my Documents called 'LUTs'. And then I have all the different LUT folders in there.
Great video, Dylan. I recently purchased Color Finale (because of another video of yours - you getting any kickbacks? đ) and I could do with some extra support.
Nice! How are you liking it so far? I've got a few people that purchased it through my referral link but nothing too crazy. Extra support here I come! I'm creating a flurry of color grading tutorials with the plug in in the coming weeks so press the notification button so YT will tell you when they come out.
@@dylanjohndickerson I am still learning and discovering the possibilities of it. As an 'amateur video content creator' I enjoy that learning process. Only 18 months ago I had not even done anything in Final Cut Pro, haha
Anyway, I am a fan of your channel for many months and subscribed since the day I ran into it. Looking forward to your tutorials. Thanks for making them!
@@gert-janvanbuseck wow! Impressive! It's all consistency isn't it? Just messing around in the software and putting in the time to learn. Props Gert! Thanks for your support đđŒđ
My understanding of ACES⊠You take whatever your capture colour space is and convert it into the ACES colour space (which is a very large colour space). You do this with all your footage from all cameras and then you match these cameras within the ACES colour space. Now that they are matched and in this one common and large colour space any adjustments you make after this should result in consistency across your shots. If you didnât do this you might match the cameras and then subsequent adjustments might not have consistent results between cameras meaning youâd have to correct for this. You then output to your delivery colour space (rec709/2020 etc) as ACES is not for final delivery.
Thank you for that Luke! That really helps out đ
The simple implementation of ACES in Color Finale is: click on Color Management/Use ACES. For the "Input Space", find the camera the footage was shot with. For the "Output Space", find the device profile you are grading on. These are known as the Input and Output Transforms. Simply done. But as far as I can see there's no way to turn it on as a saved preset, similar to the "Recent presets" below the "Edit Layers" button. Final note: ACES only works on Log footage. Use one of the other Color Management settings for other footage.
An excellent explanation for ACES is given by a series of videos by Cullen Kelly, the above taken from this one: czcams.com/video/v8P3rshGgdM/video.html
He's working with Resolve, so Color Finale doesn't have quite the control that is available with the Resolve nodes, but the transforms work the same.
How do you not have more followers. Keep it up
Hey! Thank so much! I'm not sure haha. It's been 4 years though, so I'm not holding my breath lol.
@@dylanjohndickerson I know its a shit ton of work, but keep at it! Make use of tik and CZcams shorts, there's those in other countries who will cut up your existing videos for really cheap too!
@@thefourthperspective Ya great call! Thanks for the support đđŒ
Color correcting/grading SLOG3 do you see much difference using "Assume Log" or leaving "Assume Video" in the color management, and using the Color wheels? It seems to me that using "Assume Log" for SLOG3 to be in a REC709 space, the clip is way more saturated. đ€
I would use assume LOG for SLOG3 as the first step. Assume LOG should be used when your footage was shot in LOG and not converted to Rec 709. So just that flat image. That'll add the contrast and saturation back in. If your footage's color space is standard Rec 709, Assume Video will just add a tad bit of contrast and saturation to help make your shot pop a bit more.
@@dylanjohndickerson thank you, I can always play with saturation and then use curves to grade.
@@mirkofischietti7856 True true. Curves are the jam. Definitely one of my favorite ways to grade.
@@dylanjohndickerson just to be sure if I understood well. When I'm importing my clips from my A7SIII into FCPX these clips are not converted to Rec 709, right? And if i keep Assume Video in the color management I can always bring back contrast and saturation using the wheels and curves, am I right? Sorry if I'm being annoying đ
@@mirkofischietti7856 youâre not being annoying at all man! Thatâs what Iâm here for. So youâre correct on both of those statements. If you shot in Slog, the clips arenât automatically converted to Rec 709. You can convert log footage either by using a conversion/normalization LUT (or Assume Log) or adjusting contrast and saturation yourself.
