The day I got it, my hands were shaking like xmas morning as I pulled GET BACK from the box. 50 years of bootlegs and searching. To finally hold I t in my hands was almost surreal. The only letdown was the label. It's says GET BACK. THE 1969 GLYN JOHNS MIX. yeah well we know that. Bu tthats not the name. It should read GET BACK, period. But as this guy's said, Apple doesn't consult the fans. They should.

I completely agree. I'm not subscribing to a yearly service to watch one film. I was hoping to get to see it on the large screen in theatres. Disney exclusive is the reason I haven't seen it yet. Personally I would have rather had it been a two hour movie if it meant giving it a proper release.

My thoughts on the ''wrong Get Back mix'' being issued are these:
I've been a minor producer and a happy engineer for centuries (so it feels), and made my own checks track by track from the old underground boots (69 & 70) of Glyn Johns' mixes and, once re-sequenced and pitch-corrected, compared them to each of the 2021 offerings. All are identical.
Even the 'For You Blue' comment on it being the re-recorded vocal version is not true. (re-recorded Jan 8th 1970, with the 'Elmore James has nothing on this..' etc). This version is found on L.I.B. Naked and the L.I.B. album itself. Very different from 69 & 70 mixes [which are identical].
I worked with the editor of Beatles Monthly for many years on this sort of thing.
Removing/repairing glitches or improving sound quality by remastering has never counted as a different mix, has it?
This is just a case of using the best post-mastering available.
My sincerest good wishes to all.
There are always some of us that believe in fairydust - and why not?

I agree entirely. Its very obvious that the vocal overdubs are what we hear on let it be and naked, and the 69 and 70 mixes are identical. It's about time that people with oscilloscopes should turn them off and listen to the music instead. My only small gripe is that they mixed out the feedback in Teddy boy

I've been digging a pygmy for almost 52 years. I just love the energy and spontaneity of the "Let It Be" album. I remember seeing a big stack of both the "Let It Be" and "Yellow Submarine" albums in the Woolworth's bargain basement in 1975. They were selling them for 99 cents. I bought 5 copies of each and handed them out to friends. I will get this. Anything related to the Liverpudlian moptops I want. I have all of their albums including the American ones like "Beatles '65" and "Something New."

For me, I have 2 issues with buying the box set. 1: The price, which is why I've not bought any of these new deluxe special box sets (although I am tempted by a few and will probably get them eventually). 2: There's stuff I've heard on bootlegs for years that I'd love to have better quality versions of, but they aren't included. Based on the tracklisting, it seems they focused more on alternate versions of songs that were on the original album rather than including all the songs that didn't make it. That was always the interesting stuff for me. Songs like Madman, Suzy's Parlour, Watching Rainbows and various others, George did a bunch of Bob Dylan songs acoustic but on the bootlegs it's buried in everyone else just chattering away so it would have been cool to have those cleaned up so we could actually hear George.

@@gettinhungrig8806 A Yoko vocal would have been the ultimate insult when there's so many Beatles songs they left off. As for what was said in the video about John, I think they're just his opinions, not meant to be taken as gospel. John by his own admission wasn't the strongest musician in the group and was mostly playing bass on those songs because they wanted to keep it as live as possible and Paul was on piano, George was on lead, so John was left with the bass. It has also been well documented that John was a bit standoffish as he felt the others weren't as accepting of Yoko being there all the time as they'd liked. John doesn't play on I Me Mine at all. The earlier versions he decided he'd rather dance with Yoko and the album version he wasn't even there. So there is some truth to it.

    • @abacab23
      @abacab23 Před 2 lety +1

I balked at the price originally but thought the set was worth the money. I don't think they'd be able to get the rights to Dylan songs much less any of the 1950s chestnuts they rolled out. I liked the alt songs because they picked the best material for those two discs. The bootlegs were always a tough slog. This has material I'll want to go back to for years.

was recorded during the Let It Be sessions that would be worth
checking out on YT if you haven't heard it already; its a slow, dreamy
5 to 6 minute instrumental jam with a sort of early Pink Floyd
vibe to it; should have been included on the new box set but wasn't.

Another great video Andrew. I will pass on this box set personally as I have on the Pepper, The Beatles and Abbey Road boxes. The reason being is that having the original copies of the the LP, the 87 cd and the 2009 cd, I can't find a good enough reason to keep on buying the same albums when I can just stream the new content on Spotify. I rarely listen to new mixes or sessions more than a couple of times out of curiosity anyway. What the Beatles approved back in the day sonically has always been good enough for me.

What a great video - I can’t help but agree with near enough everything you said here. This is the first time with these sets where it hasn’t felt like I have been snubbed for being a vinyl collector.
It’s a lovely set, and I think the selection of extras is just fine and lends itself nicely to a listening experience. The original bootlegs and reels while containing some goodies that were missed, can also feel like a bit of a drag after a while, and while interesting I really don’t need them all “officially released”.
For me this has been the peak of these remixes and anniversary sets overall, though I’d say the work done to Pepper does top it.

I received the Let it Be boxed set for Christmas. Other than the high price, I think it is amazing. The book and the Glyn Johns Get Back album, were worth it alone.

Thanks for another insightful video, Andrew.: you covered everything very well. I bought the vinyl set, basically to have the Glyn John's version on quality vinyl. Could never stand Spector's bombastic overproduction, and the lp is probably my least fav Beatle LP, although I do like the Get Back album. Been collecting boots since 1970, so I've got everything pretty much. Thanks again, look forward to your next video.

Another great video Andrew … I got the ‘day by day’ set over 10 years ago.. I’ve tried to listen but it’s hard without visuals.
The book in the set is good, but I agree that the scrapbook style isn’t that great.
Also I would have liked dates for the sessions.
I have the cd set but would love a separate vinyl release for the Glyn Johns mix.

    Love your channel Andrew!!
I had the opportunity to see the rooftop concert and Peter Jackson’s live link up at an I Max theater while vacationing in Florida last January. My wish is that they would have shown the roof top concert without the cut aways. The audio was breathtaking and loud!!! I’ll probably never hear it as good as I did at that I Max theatre.
As far as the Get Back box set, I have the CD version and think the 5.1 surround mix is the best out of all the Giles Martin surround mixes. It’s a awesome. Usually, the surround mix is interesting but not my go to listen. On Get Back, it’s my preferred listen.
I’m disappointed that they didn’t include the complete rooftop concert without cut aways on the Blu Ray disc. It would have been the extra icing on an already sweet cake.
I wait patiently for a stand alone rooftop performance Blu Ray.

I definitely agree with your conclusion, Andrew. And I do feel a little put out that, as a CD buyer, I don't get the full-sized Glyn Johns LP. That would look so much better than the CD version. Also, I, too, wondered why they simply reproduced the EP on CD instead of putting those tracks as "extras" on one of the others. It would have been nice to have a "proper" cover for the EP. Perhaps use one of the singles covers from the time? That might have justified the separate CD. All that said, I don't know if these issues would rise to paying another $100+ for the LP set, especially since the source is digital as with the CDs. The music is what ultimately matters, and it sounds great to my ears.
Excellent review. Thank you! Looking forward to next week... 😀

I got the "Black Album" bootleg of the Get Back sessions (2 cd's) a few years ago, and for me, a person who can usually enjoy even mundane Beatle material, the black album is something to endure rather than like. Many of the songs were recorded from the movie soundtrack rather than the soundboard.
I thought they did a pretty good job in this new box set of pulling together some of the best moments on the two "sessions" discs.

Omg Andrew! That was superb review!! And the tease for the next episode really hooked me 😆 I want it now! 🤣
Years ago I downloaded a complete discography (up to 2012) including band's studio albums and collections + solo albums and collections. In George's folder there was a 2002 collection of lifetime works including rehearsals but I never got to listen to it until yesterday. There were rehearsals from around Let It Be period too, and I found it so impressive. Listening to them chatting in the studio and working out different moods of a song's intro... Magnificent.
    One last thing....
How did we live without you all these years?

The production quality is kicked up another notch. Just superb, Andrew. I really enjoyed listening to the vinyl box set. I wasn't blown away by the remix (actually, I thought the mixing was better on the EP than the album) but it was very good. I can also see why the Glyn Johns mix was rejected multiple times. It's a great listen but a strange one... he used, at least to my ears, clearly inferior takes on several songs. The packaging for the box set is amazing and it's HEAVY... must weight twice as much as the other box sets. Of course, much of that weight is the book which I still need to go through (I only just finished reading the Get Back book). Great video as always, Andrew! Now looking forward to the upcoming Oldies video, especially as I recently acquired a Japanese copy on red vinyl. The only other copy I have is a 70's UK pressing so it will be interesting to compare.

I've ordered both the CD and the Vinyl set. One thing that disappointed me immediately was overlap. I think we all know that Abbey Road tracks were being worked upon at the time of this album. I would have preferred more from the Nagra tape reels rather than early incarnations of Abbey Road material, which should have been kept apart for the Abbey Road box set instead. Why haven't the upbeat versions of "Two of Us", Paul's "Back Seat of my Car", John's, "Child of Nature" (Jealous Guy) and even better rehearsal takes of George's "All things Must Pass" been included? Although some of this material might be slightly fragmented, it would have been more appreciated. I'm spoilt I guess, as I have a copy of the Vigotone "30 Days" bootleg. The omissions of alternative and more interesting material was an opportunity missed from this set.

Not bought either set but I have listened to it. I like the remix a lot but felt the rest was a real let down. A full cd of Twickenham rehearsals would have been much more interesting (even with the low quality nagra soundtrack) and then a cd of Apple outtakes plus the Glyn Johns mixes. That would have been more like it! Great video as always 👍

I’ve enjoyed the second Glenn Johns cut of the album for years, and it’s nice to have a slightly cleaner version than my old CD bootleg (that looks identical to the one shown here). I enjoy a lot in this version of the album. It’s a small gripe but the one thing that I really miss is George’s guitar is turned down in For You Blue, but does nic the added studio chatter in John lap steel solo; which I’m mostly indifferent on.. but that is one of George’s subtle beautiful sounding guitar songs. It’s simple, but a favorite of mine. Bringing that rhythm guitar up a bit was one of Specters positive additions

Very very good review of these sets, thank you Andrew.I was going to get both sets and just shell out for them on pre order but then circumstances wouldnt allow and now after your review I have decided to just get the vinyl set (for now, though im sure at some point in the future i will get the other too when i find it cheap, which may me a long while off like my white album and esher demos vinyl set and abbey road cd and bluray set which i only picked both up in the last few months for 60 and 40 british pounds which as youll know for brand new mint sealed items was very good). But genuinely your review has been the only one that had any real buyer satisfaction info because all the others just seem to be collectors just showing off what they have and literally just showing us the items and saying they like it and saying how they would prefer to have had something extra in the box too. Great review if these two box sets. I was originally going to buy just the cd bios set to get Blu-ray. Ultimately I decided to buy both because the vinyl box set includes much better packaging (in particular GJ’ let it be vinyl). I have reasonable BluRay and 4K tv. And really enjoyed contents of Blu-ray which does have some visual content. I really liked Stereo mid and 5.1 mixes - I was though disappointed with Atmos version which added little. I am hoping that Disney will release 4K version of six hour documentary with a really good immersive 5,1 sound mix - particularly for roof top concert.
I really liked 4 track ep too.
I imagine that Apple will next look at revolver and rubber soul for upgrades. I note that Criterion are releasing new 4K UHD of hard days night in 2022. That should be excellent.

Great video. I actually finally got the vinyl box and have been listening to it all day. I would have liked more but what people are forgetting is the superb Let It Be Naked that came out. If you add those tracks in with the Anthology 3 tracks you will be a better picture of the project. The EP in the set was partly intended to complement the Glyn Johns mix album with the 2 new stereo mixes on side 2 to go with the remix album. In my opinion the complete Roof top concert should have been included. But I have excellent sounding version on CD. The only thing I noticed that you brought up was the messing with the color saturation. On my original 1970 copy of the Glyn Johns mix album my front cover is sharp and crisp with the right color saturation and noticed on the new version the cover slightly blurry. My copy sounds just as good as the new version. So I wonder if I actually have a real copy as some were pressed in the UK in 1970 before being withdrawn.

The Glyn Johns mix of I Me Mine just makes me sad. When I heard it for the first time I geniunely thought they accidentally uploaded the wrong file or something, which is a shame because I love the Hammond organ in this mix. I was also expecting to hear Let It Be's original ghost solo from take 27a somewhere. (the one you can somewhat hear in all Let It Be versions except for Anthology, Naked and Take 28 (also known as Take 27b - the take from the Let It Be film)) And also, as many others I was also expecting to see the rooftop concert in its entirety here as well.

  • @scatteredfrog

I wasn't too jazzed about this box when it was announced (after all, Let It Be never was among my favorite Beatles albums), but the thing is, I'm a diehard nutcase fan who needs EVERYTHING. So of course I got it. And I was THRILLED when I heard it - because the sound (except that mix of "I, Me, Mine" -- and I was thinking the exact same thing: digital noise) is spectacular! In terms of content, the "white" album box is my favorite of the 50th anniversary boxes, but for sound quality, this one easily wins it for me.
The thing is, this came out shortly after The Beach Boys' Feel Flows set, a 5-CD box (well, not really a box but more of a book-with-CDs-inside-it) in which they used just about every usable second of CD space. I think the list price on both the Let It Be and Feel Flows sets was the same. So yeah, for five CDs, we were getting 3 CDs worth of material. Also, the folks at Brother KNOW what the fans want. There are plenty of folks on the inside who do reach out to fans, which is why their more recent archival releases and year-end copyright extension releases have been so stellar. They know what the fans like, and they know how to push the fans' buttons. Apple, on the other hand...they don't seem to have any fan outreach at all. Their attitude seems to be: "It's The Beatles. People will gobble up anything Beatles." And just like the computer company called Apple, the Beatles' Apple does not reach out to find out what their consumers want: they TELL their consumers what they want.
Now, I don't think the rooftop concert ever was considered as part of the set -- I mean, does the target audience as a whole really want to sit through just the audio of, oh, three performances of "Get Back," two performances of "Don't Let Me Down," etc.? But my thought is that the box was conceived first for vinyl, and it makes sense how it's arranged: one 12-inch disc for the new version of Let It Be, another for the Glyn Frankenstein album, two 12-inchers for the rehearsals and recording sessions, and an EP. (Although I was surprised to learn it's a 12-inch EP instead of a 7-inch.) I'm thinking that they basically took each record and turned it into a CD. It's not the first time the Apple suits did this to The Beatles: all of Let It Be...Naked [still my favorite of the various lineups to listen to the Get Back / Let It Be material] could have fit on one CD (but it worked well as a 12-inch and 7-inch on vinyl), and the "red" album could have fit on one CD instead of a (list price) $32 two-CD set.
