My wife was in the kitchen preparing dinner while I was watching this video. “Why is he so quiet?” 🤣 I said he’s doing a very complicated wiring job on a control board. Even the wife enjoys Steve’s bantering with the customers!
Yea my wife laughs at his customer interactions. Seems like Steve doesn't live in the everyone gets a trophy town.

I realy like watching you swap out that board, and seeing how easily you migrated all of the old leads over to the new board. That's experience. Great service call, Steve.

Switching the leads over to the exact same board as easy. Literally like a toddler matching game. Where things get tricky is when you have replacement boards with different markings. Sometimes this happens with computers but shouldn't happen with a furnace board swap.

My furnace wasn’t turning on and I had two flashing lights, and I called some hvac guy in LI and he came over and told it was my board and the board cost 1200 dollars. Well, with more research it turned out to be the inducer motor. I changed it and saved myself from getting ripped off by that guy, cause I found a furnace parts online that sold me every part I needed for the furnace just in case if any other part goes bad. By the way, I got the replacement board for 160.00 dollars
Yeah if you know what you're doing and have time to do the research, you can save yourself loads of money. Our wall hung boiler failed with a smell of burning electrics. The flue induction fan (maybe same item, sounds like it) had gone bad, ours was just 30 pounds (UK) on a famous auction site

Love doing electrical work for little old ladies... where they have broken switch plates or damaged cords etc... i can fit replacements free from good but used items that we take out. Takes seconds, but the warm glow lasts a while longer
I agree with you about picking and chosing clients.
All 80s and 90% are the same the pressure switch sticks closed then nothing can happen the board does not recognize a drop out from heat
Yeah, I would've checked voltage at the pressure switch. 0V means it's still closed and 24V means it's open, either way that board was probably junk anyways. Steve Lav always get's it going mama!!!

Yeah most modern boilers and furnaces are filled with electronics that go wrong if you look at them sideways. Causing the whole thing to be junked when it has years left on it. In the name of saving the planet... [facepalm]
shows which part of the country you're in you are still going with heating issues I just got done a week ago having my AC checked and running and it's been running for the past week and a half at least we hit a hundred degrees today.

rheem are notorious for dirt blocking the adjoining gas ports between burners and slowing the flame to the flame sensor.

I had a customer’s furnace that had a loud bang every time the furnace lit they said it was like that when it was new they thought it was normal I was doing other maintenance when I heard it, the first burner lit immediately the others took a few seconds they are friends and lived close to my shop I pulled the burner out took it to my shop & sandblasted the transfer ports after that it lit instantly and almost no sound at all
My boss told me not to waste time cleaning the flame sensor. If you take it off might as well as replace it.
I had a funny issue recently. Board had power but the power to the inducer fan was too low so it would shut off . I switched noticed a $3 relay on the board Not switching on. I research all the relays and just replaced all of them that would plug in for $5. Working great since. I was quoted by two companies of $1,000 to replace the board I did it for $5😂😂
I turn own jobs in my line of work because I know they're going to be nightmares . you dont want to make a career out of a single project
I can tell the owner doesn’t operate with a filter too much or any maintenance been completed on the old unit. The internals are dirty as hell. My furnace the board went out and required replacement. One thing to remember with a circuit board us static electricity. It will shorten the life of the board.

Used the bic pen trick for years on those standoffs. Really beats trying to get pliers in all the weird places and doesn't wreck them. Still hate them.

Steve , see you clean a lot of those gas sensors but rarely do they seem to go bad.
That’s because they keep getting cleaned. Lol
It's also cheap insurance. The cost of a flame sensor replacement vs flat minimum for a service call. Its like the cheapest part to fail and they fail often and during the middle of the season. Try changing one outdoors in a blizzard. I change fan belts every year regardless... the cost of the belt is a lot cheaper than a service call to replace a belt. Plus I dont want to be playing on a unit that could have been fixed preventatively.

i have a Rheem furnace it turns on for very short time everything i have read is a sencer am i going in right direction ?

My favorite story. A neglected system where all of the preventative maintenance money was spent on a “smart” thermostat. So … homeowner does with the furnace what he does with his computer, “reboots” it like a mad scientist, rather than call for support. He “Google’s” fixes and breaks the flame sensor. Due to all of his “reboots,” the board is cooked. Original problem of needing a gas valve, no solved. I mean, good on you Steve. Money in the bank. I tend to be a bit more cantankerous with the homeowner and tell them all these things … lol
@@Guillotines_For_Globalists dirty flame sensor is pretty common. But after a few rubs it's best just a place replace it. They're only $10 maybe 20 at most.
As only a home owner. Don't fool with a furnace, leave it to a professional.

Those smart valves are like $300-400 it's pretty cool that there was a crossover part to get away from the Honeywell.
That wasn’t a smart valve. There’s no getting away from one if that’s what your furnace uses unfortunately.
@@brandonrutt2898 that was a Honeywell VR series smart valve and there are smart valves that don't control the igniter.
@@Puffalupagus360 I don't want to keep arguing about this since I don't really care that much. Last thing I'll say is that power was supplied from the board to the inducer. Power to the igniter came from the board. Smart valves never used a spark igniter. Bunch of things that indicate this was not a smart valve. Just a 24 volt slow opening valve. Have a good one.
@@brandonrutt2898 I have a smart valve out of a carrier furnace that was a intermittent pilot with spark ignition and the valve relied on the inducer to tell it to turn off the sparker. Guess that one was a one off that carrier just happened to sell to a random noname farmer in the Midwest on a whim.

We get the same as electricians here in the UK... you get a job you can just tell is going to be a PAIN in the arse....
Either the customer keeps adding bits and expecting it to be free because 'while you're here'... or they'll want to pay by check/cheque... then take ages to find the book, or quibble about every item on the bill
I know its kinda hard to give me prices cause so many factors might go into it but how much you charge got just a call out to look at something??

If you watch enough of his videos you hear him say “time and materials” aka his hourly $ rate plus what the materials cost.
@@scottl5910 Yep same way we work here in the UK... 50 pounds an hour, plus materials at cost. Due to tax laws here it's not worth us making markup on materials as it puts our turnover too high and makes for loads more paperwork.

I’ve heard him say his Service Call initial charge is $96.00. That’s the visit plus the first hour of labor. Very good rate for southern New England. Additional labor and all parts add on to that $96.00.

You have to read the Flashes.
That fan used to purge gases is dirty as hell as requires to be cleaned. The whole inside of the cabinet need major TLC.

That gas valve was likely on its way out and cooked the board
You do know if the fuse is blown you wont get lights on the board right?
fuse was fine .....it kills the low voltage side of things

I used to take the burner assembly apart to clean the rust out. That time the last burner didn't even light. There's still dirt in the channel.
